FAMILY OWNED FOR 5 GENERATIONS In 1928, Frank T. Cutsforth opened a Meat Market on First St in Canby, Oregon. At the age of 12, son Glenn began working, alongside of his father, learning the trade. In 1937 Glenn married Elsie Egli. Elsie joined the family business originally as a meat cutter. They bought the Business from Frank T. Cutsforth in 1947. Their son, Frank began working in the business in 1957, eventually becoming Produce Manager and then owner in 1980. The and they are the current owners. A Canby Tradition For Over 90 Years
1952
Front Counter 1930
1928… Calvin Coolidge
was the U.S. President, and pro business. Penicillin was discovered. The Iron Lung invented. The iconic Boston Garden arena opened. And in Canby, Oregon… where approximately 800 people live, on Friday March 9th, 1928, Frank Thomas Cutsforth opens a meat market on First Street in Canby. Today, Cutsforth Thriftway Market celebrates over 90 years of providing people in and around the Canby area, with quality meats, local produce, dry goods, homemade bakery, wide selection of deli food, and so much more.
h Cutsfort
Family
Four generations of Cutsforths have worked for the family business. While Frank T. was the FIRST generation, Frank David Cutsforth is the third generation, and currently the store’s President and one of the owners. Frank D. recounts the story of why his granddad opened the meat
market in Canby. “Frank T. was a meat cutter with his brother in Gervais. Wanting to be independent from his brother, he moved to Canby and started his meat shop.” There were more changes to come. Frank D. says that meat lockers were added in the 1930s. “There were no refrigerators in the homes. It was a rural town. Many raised their own beef, pork and chicken.”

Residents would bring in their own beef, pork, game, cut it, and store it in the Cutsforth meat lockers, along with their vegetables and fruit too. Customers would come in one, or more times, each week, and pick up their food as they needed. Tanner Cutsforth, son of Frank D. and one of the fourth generation family members to work at Cutsforth Market, tells of how hard running a meat locker was back then. Ice was delivered, via truck, in 300lb blocks. This was used not only to keep everything cool, but was also used to sell 25lb blocks of ice to customers. The Cutsforth meat lockers were used through the mid-1950s. At the age of 12, Frank T’s son Glenn, the SECOND generation, began working alongside of his father. While learning the trade, Glenn married Elsie Egli in 1937. Elsie joined the family business originally as a meat cutter. Glenn and Elsie bought the Business from Frank T. in 1947. Cutsforth Meat Market became a “grocery store”, one of Canby’s first.
Frank D. remembers his mom, Elsie, as an “exceptional visionary. She could always see stuff happening moving forward. The trend then was to add dry goods. Elsie said that ‘it grew and grew and grew. Then, all of a sudden, you have a supermarket!’” In 1960, Cutsforth Market moved to Second Avenue (Holly Mall). Cutsforth Market added groceries, such as dairy, baked goods, canned foods, and other dry goods. Tanner believes that his grandma Elsie was “the workhorse…the heart and soul of Cutsforth Market.” He added that his granddad Glenn loved interacting with customers and staff as he could “entertain”. Checker Candy Kelly, currently working her 34th year for Cutsforth, recalls that Elsie was “very business savvy”. Glenn’s and Elsie’s son Frank D. began working in the business in 1957. Five years later, he became the Produce Manager. Increasing to 20,000 square feet, the store moved to the current location in 1974. Cutsforth was one of the first grocery stores in Oregon to have its own bakery in 1986.
1974
By 1980, Frank D., the THIRD generation Cutsforth Thriftway employee, became the Cutsforth Thriftway owner. Frank D. would be joined by five other co-owners… his five children. Brooks, the oldest, works for a management group in Beaverton, OR and manages Cutsforth Properties. The second oldest, Christian, owns a wholesale pottery business in Portland, OR. Kelsey Cordill (Cutsforth) works part-time as the Accounts Payable specialist and Gift Department Buyer. Joel assists with store operations and “does a very good job” of managing the craft beers and wine bar, according to Frank D. Joel coordinates special tastings, with local breweries and wineries, for Cutsforth customers. Tanner is the youngest of the five. He handles the marketing, updates the website, tackles the remodeling including woodworking around the store, signage, etc. The FIFTH generation Cutsforth will be represented at the Market this Summer. The oldest of Frank D.’s eleven grandchildren, Brooks’ son Kellen will begin working at Cutsforth Thriftway after he turns sixteen. From 1986 to 1998, Frank D. oversaw three remodels that added a total of 25,000 square feet to Cutsforth Thriftway. During those expansion years, and including the past two decades, Cutsforth continues
Wine & Beer Bar to try “new things”, according to Frank D. The store’s Wine and Beer Bar caters to local, smaller wineries and breweries. Shoppers can stop by Wednesday through Friday, from 4 pm to 7 pm, for open wine tasting. The Meat section has transformed since Frank T. opened his butcher shop. Seafood was added in 1990. In one display case, you will find rows of seafood, beef, pork, and chicken marinated or part of tasty in house recipes, some meats placed on shish kebab sticks for easy barbequing. Another option for the Cutsforth shopper is selecting from nearly two dozen varieties of sausages, processed and cased in the store. Frank D. gives credit for this popular choice to the Head of the Meat Department, Bruce, whose idea was to create Cutsforth’s own sausages.

Cutsforth Thriftway prides itself on a made-from-scratch Bakery, including all Donuts, Wedding Cakes, Designer Cupcakes, and baked goods.
Megan Tippie The Produce department has been improved. With spring temperatures, Tanner has increased the size of the Produce section with an outside area (available from inside the store). Displays of fruit and vegetables framing the restored 1946 Massey Harris tractor, shoppers get the Farmer’s Market feel. Produce Manager Mike seeks local produce, such as strawberries, Hermiston watermelons and alba apples. Frank D. commented that Mike and his crew “Keep it clean and well-stocked.”
akery Scratch B
Because of the various seating locations and delicious food options, many customers frequent Cutsforth for breakfast or lunch. The Espresso Counter and the Bakery provide the right ingredients for their daily breakfast crowd, with old time coffee groups visiting and sipping coffee.
Marissa Wolford The Deli section is alive with activity and food choices to please any palate. Build Your Own Salad Bar. Sushi. Chicken. Frank D. started to bbq ribs, tri tip and chicken on a Traeger Grill at the store, once a week eight years ago. Now those meats are daily staples at Cutsforth. Grandma Elsie’s Potato and Macaroni salads are made from scratch daily. Tanner has heard that “People drive from Portland for Elsie’s potato salad!” As Frank D. recalls that his mom’s potato salad is “an oldfashioned recipe her family put together. Good taste.”
Jeanette Harrim an Last year, a Gift section was added to the Floral area. Kelsey developed this idea of offering unique decorative gifts for those special occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, kids, and other celebrations. And right next to that section is the Pizza kitchen, whereby you can either order your pizza and have it baked there, or bring it home to eat later. Cutsforth Thriftway is now a full-service grocery store that currently employs 105 staff members. Tanner pointed out that Cutsforth has benefited from a vast number of loyal employees throughout the 90 years of

being in business. Some have worked decades at Cutsforth, until they retire. Ron Russ started at Cutsforth on September 20, 1975, almost 43 years ago!

Candy Kelly
Candy Kelly is working on her 34th year at the store, but she is not the only one from her family to be part of the team. Her brother Tom, the store’s Produce Manager, recently retired from Cutsforth after 38 years of dedicated service to the owners and customers. Her sister Cindy Kelly has been the Office Manager at Cutsforth Market for over 30 years. A family market with a family atmosphere… in more ways than one.
Speaking of loyalty, last year Fred Bigey, with pal Lars Aamondt, celebrated his 85th year of shopping Cutsforth Market. Frank D. also posed for a picture with another loyal Cutsforth shopper of 71 years, Margaret Shetler. Cutsforth Thriftway gives back to the Canby community. Frank D. understands the value of being involved to help those less fortunate. “We donate all of our (unsold) food to the Canby Center (non-profit), to help feed the homeless and less privileged. We like everything to be fresh and blemish-free. If it’s not, it is donated to the Canby Center.” Why donate food? “We are local. We help local. It is part of our responsibility.”
Why has Cutsforth Thriftway Market been so successful for so long? Frank D. replied, “We’ve been here 90 years… and keep working at it.” I recently stumbled upon this sign that read… “Wonderful PEOPLE...Friendly SERVICE… SMALL Town Charm.” Where do you think that I found this statement that harkens back to how a number of stores operated decades ago…? I located these wise words on the Cutsforth Market Facebook page. How appropriate. 90 years. Soon 5 generations. And still going strong!

From my first visit to the iconic Canby supermarket store, I recognized early on that the staff is friendly and work together, the employees know customers by name and converse with them in a friendly tone, and are helpful to customers throughout the store.

CAR CARE CORNER
On The Road
Why is a Wheel Alignment Important?
JUNE / JULY NEWSLETTER
Your car’s manufacturer specifies carefully calculated adjustments and precise settings for wheel alignment that will reward you with maximum vehicle performance, optimum driving enjoyment, and cost savings. Improper wheel alignment will result in difficult handling, greatly accelerated tire wear, poor fuel economy, and excessive wear on your car’s suspension system. Steering or handling problems may include off-center steering wheel, steering pull, unsteady steering, loose steering, or hard steering. You may also notice a change in steering direction after hitting bumps. Unusual or accelerated tire wear may take the form of edge wear, diagonal wear, or cupping wear that, if left unattended, will require premature tire replacement. Failing to maintain proper wheel alignment will make it impossible to maintain factory specified suspension setting that control the quality of your ride. Bumping a curb or hitting a pot hole could have adverse affects on your alignment. Protect your investment in your vehicle by keeping your wheels properly aligned. If you have new tires installed or worn suspension parts replaced, be sure to have these repairs accompanied by a wheel alignment. Also, allow us to check your wheel alignment when you bring in your vehicle for routine annual maintenance. Remember, proper wheel alignment will optimize your vehicle’s ride, handling, and steering capabilities, as well as making your car safer and easier to drive. What’s more, it will save you money by significantly extending the life of your tires and suspension! We suggest having an alignment done at least once a year.
Getting Your Vehicle Ready
S
ummer’s heat, dust, and stop-and-go traffic, will take their toll on your vehicle. Add the effects of last winter, and you could be poised for a breakdown. You can lessen the odds of mechanical failure through periodic maintenance...Your vehicle should last longer and command a higher resale price, too! Some of the following tips are easy to do; others require a skilled auto technician.
Air Conditioning
A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the system examined by a qualified technician. Newer models have cabin air filters that clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system. Check your owner’s manual for location and replacement interval.
Cooling System
The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has
thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.
Oil
Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual more often (every 3,000 miles) if you make frequent short jaunts, extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer.
Engine Performance
Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended more often in dusty conditions. Get engine drive-ability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good shop.
Windshield Wipers
A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and get plenty of windshield washer solvent.
Lights
Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean dirt and insects from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

For Summer Tires
Brakes
Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer
Battery
Batteries can fail any time of year. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly.Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.
Emergencies
Carry some basic tools — ask a technician for suggestions. Also include a first aid kit, flares, and a flashlight.

Have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles. Check tire pressures once a month; check them while they’re cold before driving for any distance. Don’t forget to check your spare as well and be sure the jack is in good condition. Examine tires for tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there’s uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side.

TOP Summer Safety Tips 5 for Pet Parents
Hope you are having a nice summer! With the hot weather setting in, we wanted to remind folks that amidst the fun and games, pet health should be kept top of mind to help ensure a safe season for all. To keep dogs and cats out of harm’s way, the ASPCA has created a helpful infographic with the Top 5 Summer Dangers for Pets, including:
1 2
Loud noises like fireworks are one of the top reasons pets go missing, so secure your pet in an escape-proof place. If your pet does go missing, download the ASPCA app for a free step-by-step digital toolkit to help find your pet: www.ASPCAapp.org.
SUN & HEAT
High summer temperatures and bright days can mean dehydration, overheating, and scorched paws. Know the signs of overheating (excessive panting, increased heart rate, and weakness) and bring your pup indoors or to a cool, shady place.
3 4
FIREWORKS & THUNDERSTORMS
TOXIC CHEMICALS
Insecticides, citronella products, and glow sticks are toxic to pets. Keep your pet away from areas where chemicals have been sprayed and ensure dangerous products are out of reach.
PARTIES & BARBECUES If your pet’s joining the party, make sure guests don’t feed your pet human food (especially grapes, onions, avacado, and chocolate) and ensure alcoholic drinks are kept out of your pet’s reach.
5
HOT CARS
Even with the windows open an inch, a car’s temperature can reach over 100° in 10 minutes on an 85° day. One quick errand can turn dangerous in minutes, so leave your pet safely at home. Sign our Hot Car Pledge to help save lives this summer and all year long.

GOT FLEAS?
Parasites love Oregon’s mild climate, which means pests like fleas survive year round! • Prevention of these parasites is less expensive than treatment. • We recommend an anti-parasite program that includes flea control. • Please call to ask about the various treatment options we recommend for your pet.
