What is Upload Speed and Why is it Important? You and the family are on vacation and want to check in on your house through a virtual security camera system like Google Nest or Ring Doorbell. But what happens if your home’s Internet connection doesn’t have fast enough upload speed to get that video feed to you? Systems like this require a fair amount of upload speed in order to transfer live video feeds to the Internet to be viewed on a smartphone or other mobile device. You won’t be able to see that security feed and know that your home is safe.

Most Internet service providers only showcase a single number when advertising their connection speeds. That number is known as the download speed and denotes the bandwidth that is used for the following tasks: • • • •

Stream HD video Load a web page to view Stream music Scroll through social media apps like Instagram or Facebook

Often overlooked is a connection's upload speed, which is crucial to perform a variety of tasks including: • • • • •

Stream live video feeds from a home security system (2 Mbps per camera) Send large files via email (1 Mbps) Video calls to connect with school, work, or loved ones (1-2 Mbps per stream) Play online multiplayer games (1 Mbps per user) Smartphone automatic backups over WiFi DirectLink offers the fastest upload speeds in town with every Internet connection. In fact, our upload speeds are more than FIVE TIMES FASTER than other providers in the area.

Plus, every Internet speed tier is FREE from overage fees and includes UNLIMITED DATA.

BLUE ALLEY SALON

Now Offers HydraFacials! By Owner Ann Ashland Wayne

Blue Alley Salon recently added manicures and pedicures to our list of services and the results have been fantastic! Our wonderful nail technician, Amber, has been keeping very busy. Due to this success we have decided to expand our spa services, and we now offer the complete spa experience! In addition to manicures and pedicures, we have added a private facial and spa room. This means that professional grade skin care is now available at Blue Alley! And not just any facial - we are pleased to be offering HydraFacials, using only the best products from the award winning skin care line Dermalogica. Unlike traditional facials, a HydraFacial provides your skin with a gentle cleansing and rejuvenating experience without any pain during or after the treatment. This treatment is a great option for people with a wide range of skin concerns at any age, and it gives your skin many benefits. The process gently exfoliates and removes dead skin cells, as well as surface gunk. This step provides a clean and smooth surface for the rest of the treatment. From there, debris is extracted from your pores. The traditional extraction process in facials often results in pain and redness. Force from pressing and squeezing the skin is needed for proper extraction in other facials but the HydraFacial technology gently extracts without this force. An exciting part for most clients is the ability to see how much was removed from your pores by inspecting the Hydradermabrasion device afterwards. If you are looking to address fine lines & wrinkles, elasticity & firmness, even tone & vibrancy, skin texture, brown spots, oily & congested skin, or enlarged pores, a HydraFacial will provide an excellent solution.

the facial more to your skin priorities. The current available options include Brightalive Boost, Ann Wayne, Owner which brightens skin by reducing BLUE ALLEY SALON & GIFT SHOP discoloration; Growthfactor Boost, which increases cellular growth to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; Dermabuilder Boost, which addresses fine lines by creating skin firmness while correcting skin tone and texture; and Britenol Boost, which reduces the appearance of dark spots and sun damage to reveal a more even complexion. For those with oilier skin types who may not believe they need a hydrating facial, we want to clear up this misunderstanding. Oily skin is often worsened by over-drying the skin. Oil is one of the ways our skin protects itself and by over-drying it, your skin will signal glands to create more oil. This then creates a vicious cycle of over-drying and oil production which may result in skin damage. Oil, dead skin cells, and other debris can clog pores, resulting in irritated skin or pimples. A HydraFacial gently and effectively cleans the skin by removing dead skin and clearing pores. It then replaces hydration to your pores and finishes off with a protective layer. Rather than removing surface oil with creams, toners, and face wash, a HydraFacial will remove the harmful bits from deep within your pores. You will notice less oil production with HydraFacial treatments. Book your appointment today! Facials are available starting February 1st and HydraFacials will be available on Valentines day. Blue Alley Salon is located at 21680 Main Street in Aurora. Please call 503-267-3969 or visit bluealleysalon.com for more information or to book an appointment.

A bonus booster is a great solution for patients who have skin concerns that may not be completely remedied from a traditional HydraFacial. These serums tailor

TA STE OF THE TOWN

by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

W

ayward Sandwiches celebrated its first year in business last October, and ever since opening they’ve collected rave reviews and cultivated a growing fanbase here in Canby and throughout the region. And it’s no wonder, since their core philosophy is all about a steadfast commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and making delicious, gourmet-quality food from scratch, while also being accessible and non-pretentious. Matt Morrissey is a West Linn resident and firsttime restaurant owner, though he has over two decades of experience in the hospitality industry. That experience included managing Veritable Quandary, one of the most well-known and beloved restaurants in Portland, until it closed several years ago. Another central figure in the vision and early success of Wayward Sandwiches is Justin Rouse, executive chef and assistant general manager. Justin is also a former VQ employee, and considering that was where he and Matt met and became friends, it could be said that this new endeavor of theirs is a phoenix of sorts, rising from the ashes of that unfortunate closure. Matt has taken on the responsibility of carefully and thoughtfully curating the shop’s wine selection, a growing list that he plans to eventually work up to around 100 labels, featuring vintners from nearby locations like the Willamette Valley, eastern Washington and the “up-andcoming” Rogue River Valley, along with some Californian,

10 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

French, Spanish and Italian favorites. Many of Wayward’s wine selections are new to the Canby market. Matt’s focus on all things vino has given Justin free rein to produce the shop’s signature menu of meats, which they source locally and smoke in-house. “The best part about working at a sandwich shop is you get to do all these experiments with meat,” he says. “We do everything from scratch. That’s been the plan from the very beginning.” At Wayward, they take that “from scratch” thing really seriously. They make their own pickles. They make their own sauces. They even make their peanut butter and jelly for the kids’ PB&J. The only things they don’t make themselves (their bread and cheese) are sourced locally, from places like Grano, a small-batch artisanal bakery in Oregon City, and TMK Creamery, the award-winning cheesemakers located just outside Canby. Both Matt and Justin share a vision and commitment to the integrity of the local food chain. This commitment, obviously, extends to the fresh produce they use as well. “All of the produce that we were paying big bucks for up in Portland is grown out here,” Justin says. “So we thought, ‘Let’s talk to our local farmers.’ We’ve been able to meet some really good farmers, and we’ve been able to forge some great relationships.” The menu offers house sandwiches, which tend to be their unique takes on the classics (like a Romanian Pastrami Reuben or a Cajun Chicken Club) or you can build your own. They also have wonderful soups and salads, as well as a unique and ever-changing selection of daily specials. Their house-

made fries and potato chips are already becoming famous. Their Reuben is particularly popular... and controversial as it turns out. It features Emmentaler cheese (a creamier, more flavorful French alternative to the usual Swiss), a tangier version of Thousand Island dressing that they call “lost sauce,” and house-made sauerkraut that’s a lot crisper and fresher than you may be accustomed to. The most polarizing part of it is the meat, which they quickly learned had to be cut thick because their smoked pastrami was so tender it would otherwise fall apart (Reubens traditionally feature very thin slices of meat). “Every now and then, we do get someone who is upset. They think what we’ve done to the Reuben is somehow sacrilegious,” says Matt. “But for every one of those people,

we get five who say it’s the best Reuben they’ve ever had in their life. It’s an interesting phenomenon.” Despite the “controversy” around it, the Reuben has become the shop’s Number 2 seller, just behind the ever-popular grass-fed beef burger, served with smoked tomato jam, mustard aioli, TMK cheddar, bacon and iceberg lettuce on a brioche bun. Their Wayward Club, which uniquely features harissa, rounds out their top three. Wayward Sandwiches is located in the Dahlia Building at 117 NW 2nd Avenue in Downtown Canby. They are currently open for take-out and outdoor dining, but be sure to follow them on facebook for current updates. Check out their amazing menu online at waywardsandwiches.com or give them a call at 503-266-3100 for more information. m

SOUTH END ANTIQUE MALL by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

V

inyl records, vintage clothing, fine china, antique furnishings and decor, tobacco pipes, unique wall art for your “man cave,” century-old hand tools, imported oddities, and more. What does this eclectic mix of items have in common? Not much, other than the fact that most of them have been around for several decades or more, and you can find them all at the South End Antique Mall in Aurora. Opened by Bill and Teresa Nootenboom in May of 2005, the South End Antique Mall’s offerings are as curious and varied as the sprawling building on Highway 99E and its history itself. Built in 1919, many longtime Aurora residents remember the building by its previous use as turkey hatchery. Before that it was a bag factory and, earlier still, a pickle company. “In the process of moving things around out here, I found some of the original Aurora Pickle labels and jars,” says Bill. Teresa got into the business after a career in children’s equine therapy at the Christie School in Marylhurst that spanned two decades. She toyed with the idea of opening her own program but eventually settled on her “second love”: antiques. “It’s really been a successful business, and it’s been a lot of fun,” she says. The mall features 25 to 30 vendors spread out over 18,000 square feet. Because South End had the space, the Nootenbooms decided to make the most of it, eschewing the rigid booths favored by most antique malls and allowing their vendors to spread out a bit more, which facilitates a more “meandering” shopping experience. “We did it a little bit different than a lot of the malls do,” Teresa says. “A little bit bigger spaces, more vignettes instead of the little cubicles.” The extra space also allows for displays of larger pieces than you might find in typical shops, especially furniture, but don’t be surprised if you see a “sold” sticker on something that catches your fancy. “If you walk around, you’ll see a lot of the furniture has sold signs on it; we’re waiting for people to pick it up,” says Bill. “We have a hard time keeping it. It’s good-quality stuff, and as fast as we can get it, it’s going out.” One room is dominated by a life-sized wood sculpture of a horse (a reminder of Teresa’s previous career and lifelong love of horses), which pulls an authentic Portland Wagon Co. wagon most of the time, but during the Christmas season it’s changed to a sleigh. The horse also gets a makeover during other major holidays like Halloween and Valentine’s Day. “I like people and I want them to always feel comfortable when they come into the store,” Teresa says. “We want people to feel welcome. Before COVID, we would always serve cookies and coffee as well. It was always there when you came in. We just want it to be nice and inviting and roomy.” South End holds four major storewide sales each year, and the next one is the Sweetheart Sale, happening February 12th-14th. Come on down and take some time to browse through the store with your Valentine. You never know what kind of treasures you’ll find! South End Antique Mall is located at 21128 Hwy 99E in Aurora. They are open MondaySaturday from 10am-5pm, and Sunday from 11am-5pm. For more information, visit southendantiquemall.blogspot.com. ■

Odd Moe’s

by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

fter two decades of popularity and growth in the towns of McMinnville, Salem, Keizer, Hillsboro and Newberg, Odd Moe’s Pizza has finally come to Canby. Though they have built a loyal following in the state capital, where 3 of their eight stores are located, co-owner Mike Sublett says he has always been a small-town guy at heart. The locally owned and operated company began by engaging the younger markets in McMinnville, especially though the high school and Linfield College, and they hope to do something similar here in Canby. But their commitment to supporting their local communities goes much deeper than that. They’ve sponsored countless sports teams in every city they’re located, helped to build a skate park, awarded high school scholarships, and consistently offer a number of other avenues for promotion and fundraising to local charities and nonprofits. “You know, it just comes down to what they need, and what we can do,” Mike says. “And for what we can’t do, we just work on bridging those gaps. I think community is pretty simple - to be a part of it, you just have to be a part of it.”

ways. But the key for us is the water. We have fantastic water here in Oregon. A lot of places on the East Coast, they don’t have that.” Who knew that water was the key to a great crust? And the variety of creations that can be built on top of that crust is nearly endless. They have a dozen signature “all-star” combinations to choose from, or you can build your own. Some popular choices include The Green Monster (with artichoke hearts, fresh spinach, Roma tomatoes, garlic, feta, mozzarella, and Odd Moe’s homemade basil pesto sauce), the Lineman (salami, pepperoni, fresh mushrooms, red onions, black olives, green peppers, beef, and Italian sausage with red sauce), and the Big Juan (taco meat, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, black olives, fresh tomatoes, green onions and cheddar cheese with “south of the border” sauce). Check out their menu online to see all of the fantastic options! The highest praise I can offer is that the Odd Moe’s “Bull Rider” is the only pie I’ve ever tried that made me admit pineapple on pizza might make sense. It’s a unique concoction that features chicken, sausage, bacon and, yes, pineapple, along with a tangy chipotle lime BBQ sauce in lieu of traditional tomato. The flavors, while unconventional, work together wonderfully well, which is typical of the Odd Moe’s menu.

Community involvement is definitely a factor in their success thus far, but of course what it really comes down to is the food, which is undeniably delicious! Mike is extremely thoughtful in crafting their combinations, and this thoughtfulness comes through in the final product, as does the quality of the ingredients they use and the careful way they prepare them. “It starts with the dough,” he says. “Dough is interesting, because it’s a very simple product in a lot of

Chug Coffee

W

ake up and smell the delicious coffee! The next time you are in Aurora visiting the adorable antique shops, or even if you’re just passing through, make sure to drive up and get some caffeinated goodness from Chug Coffee. You may love it so much that you’ll want to come to town just so you can stop in for a pick me up! This coffee cart location is brand new, having just opened in late summer of 2020, but the wonderful people who own and operate it are no strangers to the area. Samantha Ribb and her mom previously ran the R&R Cafe that used to be inside of the Wilsonville Subaru dealership. Things were going well and they were looking to expand and get into the drive-thru business. Everything was moving along with plans to open a supplemental location to the cafe... but then COVID struck. The dealership was forced to close the cafe to keep exposure at a minimum. As time progressed and they got all the necessary permits and forms approved, the new coffee-cart endeavor became more of a reality than the cafe, which was sadly never allowed to reopen. Chalk it up to another casualty in the path of destruction of the pandemic. So while one door has closed for Sam, another has gently swung open. Chug Coffee is a passion project for her, and she is very excited to now be serving amazing coffee drinks and pastries in the Aurora community! Why the name “Chug,” you may ask? Well, Sam is a serious dog lover and her two “Chugs” (Chihuahua-Pug mixes) are the inspiration for the name. She wanted to incorporate them somehow into the theme of the business, and one day it dawned on her to use their breed name as a cute play on words. After 26 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

all, who doesn’t need to chug a big cup of coffee early in the morning, right? The name fit perfectly, and the logo even includes the silhouette of her adorable little chug Jack! You’ll also notice when you visit that most of the specialty drinks they serve are either named after her dogs or inspired by them. There’s The Jack, The Lula, The Underbite, The Blue Dog Fog, Puppy Kisses, and Paws on the Beach; all of which are extremely clever and extremely delicious! They also feature two seasonal drinks, which recently included The Muttcracker (see what she did there?) and The Peppermint “Bark.” With a menu this whimsical and creative, not to mention tasty, how can you resist? For other dog parents who have their furbabies along for the trip, Chug Coffee even serves free whip cups for pups! Being more limited on space in a coffee cart, they can’t serve all the same sandwiches, soups and meals they used to provide at the cafe, but Sam’s standards for quality certainly have not waned just because the menu may be a bit more limited. Being true ambassadors of the local communities they live in and serve, they get everything they can from local companies. Their pastries come from Cookie Monkey in Portland, and their coffee beans come from Dillanos Coffee Roasters, located just a few hours up I-5 in Sumner, Washington. The blend they serve is a medium dark roast with a deliciously nutty, slightly chocolatey flavor. They also serve White Coffee, which is something many of us may have never heard of, but definitely should try! Sam explains that White Coffee is brewed from beans that are only just lightly toasted which provides a significantly smoother, nuttier flavor to their profile. It’s the

perfect solution for people who want to drink something coffeeish, but aren’t necessarily big fans of espresso. She said this is a newer thing on the coffee scene in many parts of the country, but it’s very popular in the Northwest. Sam loves what she does and she truly enjoys concocting new and delicious flavors for her customers to enjoy. She is like the proverbial “mad scientist” when it comes to this part of her job, but when it has such delicious results, who can complain? She experiments with all sorts of different flavor combinations to get the perfect mixtures, making her menu extremely interesting and versatile. I, for one, can’t wait to get down to Aurora to try The Lula, which is white chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon, hazelnut, and a split shot of half regular espresso, half white. Or perhaps The Underbite, which is a dark chocolate mocha with a slight spicy kick. Hmm... decisions, decisions. They also have a nice selection of concoctions made with teas and energy drinks, as well as hot cocoa and italian sodas. Their energy drinks are of special note since they don’t use the typical brands full of synthetic ingredients, which often have a chemical flavor or leave a metallic aftertaste. At Chug, they only use Lotus Brand energy concentrates, which are plant-based and naturally crafted using botanicals, superfruits, and natural caffeine from green coffee beans. The result is a healthier and tastier energy

drink with no lingering metallic aftertaste. Of course, it wouldn’t be on the Chug Coffee menu if Sam hadn’t come up with some fun and fantastic flavor combinations. Puppy Kisses uses Pink Lotus Energy with coconut, guava, red raspberry and a splash of coconut milk, while Paws on the Beach consists of Blue Lotus Energy with passionfruit, pineapple, coconut, and coconut milk. They are absolutely delicious and a refreshing relief from the artificial energy drinks served elsewhere. Sam, her mom and her crew, are local people who love the communities they live in and serve. Sam’s only complaint about her new endeavor is that it’s much more difficult for her to talk to her customers now, beyond the standard pleasantries that get passed through the window with your drink. Her favorite part of the job (besides being a flavor-mixing mad scientist) is getting to know her customers, and she is eagerly looking forward to getting out into the community once restrictions are lifted to start sponsoring local sports teams and participating in local fundraising activities. This is a local treasure of the highest order, so stop on by to support them and get a tasty treat in return! Chug Coffee is located at 21030 Hwy 99E in Aurora, near the South End Antique Mall. Find them on Facebook and Instagram (@ChugCoffee) for updates on specials, new seasonal flavors, and their new delivery option, Chug Jugs! ◾

BUILDING JOIN LEADERS

BUSINESS

EXCHANGE IDEAS

- BUILDING COMMUNITY TAKE ACTION

ROTARIANS ARE PEOPLE OF ACTION Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges. “You are cared for and not forgotten” is the message placed in each of the 100 Blessing Bags assembled by Canby Rotary Club members to give to homeless people. This is a real and tangible way to help someone who needs help and hope. Club members donated cash and volunteered time to purchase supplies and were joined by donations of toothbrushes and toothpaste by Dr. Alan Neal and Dr. Michael Cary, lip balm by Chlorox Corporation, and thermal blankets by Matt and Catrina Nelson. The Blessing Bags also include socks, stocking cap, toiletries, hand warmers, tissues, band aids, hand sanitizer, and snack food. Canby Kiwanis Club found creative ways to continue the annual food and toy collection and distribution project even in a challenging time of rising Covid-19 cases and restriction of social interactions. Canby

Rotarians and their families volunteered to gather toys together in bags to deliver at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in December. More than 600 families in our community received these gifts for their children and gift cards for food. Rotarians donated $1500 to Canby Kiwanis Club for the project. Thank you Canby Kiwanis for your caring and leadership. Rotarian Bob “Cash” McCall lead the effort to have the fourth Rotary Peace Pole placed in Canby. The new peace pole was dedicated in December at Canby Police Department; joining others at Ackerman Center, Canby Public Library, and Canby High School. Rotary strives to create an environment of peace in communities that will have a global effect by addressing the underlying causes of conflict such as poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, and lack of access to education. We have a vision of a more peaceful world. Canby Rotary Club members were seen building a “snowman” on the corner of North Ivy Street and Second Avenue in December. Did you see it? Community service is central to the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” which means unselfish volunteer service.

ABOVE AND BEYOND 2021 President Teresa Sasse presented an Above and Beyond award to Canby Fire District Chief James X. Davis. The recognition was presented in appreciation of his leadership of the Canby Fire District and a career of dedication with distinction. Rotarian Davis has worked more than 43 years (of service) in fire and emergency medical service. He served in leadership position in Woodinville, Washington; the City of Oregon City; and Tualatin Valley Fire Department before joining Canby Fire District. The extraordinary situation of leading the response to community needs during a worldwide coronavirus pandemic and a major

JAMES X. DAVIS wildfire emergency was only successful because Jim has a lifetime of training and experience. Jim is an active member of the Rotary Club of Canby, Canby Adult Center Board Member, Canby Area Chamber of Commerce Board Member, and St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was formerly a Canby Kids Board CONGRATULATIONS Member and youth sports coach. President Sasse said, “Jim, you are a leader in our community, and you set a positive example of leadership under stress. Firefighters are known to go toward the danger to help other people, and you are no exception to this practice. We are proud of you.”

Jim!

DESKS THAT GO THE DISTANCE Schools in Canby and around the United State closed in March 2020 and students began distance learning or school-at-home. As students, teachers, and families scrambled to adjust to this situation, many low income families were less prepared for their children to have what is needed at home to create a good learning environment. It became obvious that some students were really struggling because they lacked a desk or table they could consistently use for school work. If you ever wondered, “what could I do to really make a difference in my community?” You are in good company. Rotarian Rodger Busse became aware that students who are attending school at their home were struggling to find a place to do their work. And he was soon joined by other Rotarians eager to help. What happened next is a wonderful example of a creative and simple solution to a real world problem. Rotarian Ron Harris went to work to design and build a prototype of a simple student desk in his workshop. Members of the Rotary Club of Canby worked together in Ron’s workshop to build 100 student desks while observing pandemic safety measures. Rotary International members focus their service projects primarily in six areas. One of these is

education and literacy. The heart of encouraging local youth to be successful students is having a consistent place to work and school supplies accessible to them as they learn at home. Education during a time of COVID-19, wildfires, and economic challenges requires heightened compassion and practical solutions. The student desks are built to go the distance. This means the desk could serve students for many years as a place to do homework rather than using a kitchen table, bed, or floor to attend classes or study. School supplies given to students with the desk are especially important to families experiencing long-term unemployment or part-time employment making basic school supplies hard to buy. When the sign-up list opened at The Canby Center, the 100 student desks were reserved in less than three days. The appreciation of each student and their parents was very noticeable as they waited in line outside The Canby Center on the day the desks were distributed. Taking action in difficult times starts with simple solutions to big problems and a willingness to help others.

MATTRESS WORLD NORTHWEST A LOC ALLY OWNED GEM by Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

attress stores seem to be a dime a dozen, with locations on virtually every street corner and dozens of online options as well. I have to admit that before speaking to Sean Hathaway, President and Owner of Mattress World Northwest, I was ignorant of the nuances distinguishing one mattress retailer from another. I thought that one buying experience would virtually be the same as the next. I could not have been more wrong. For starters, there’s the personal element. This isn’t just a “job” for Sean. He has been in this business for over 25 years! He started the parent company Furniture Showcase, Inc. in 1995; and has been serving the community as Mattress World Northwest (MWNW) since 2004. He and his team are dedicated to making your mattress buying experience one of a kind. That is no sales ploy either. Sean is the genuine article (as anyone who has met him will attest) and it’s obvious that he cares deeply about his employees and his customers. Sean spoke passionately about MWNW’s three-pronged approach to success. First and foremost they are dedicated to helping their customers get a better night’s sleep. Thorough training and the largest selection of mattresses in the northwest allow them to assist each and every customer in finding the most comfortable option for a better night’s sleep. The second prong to MWNW’s mission is making sure their employees are happy. Again, it’s obvious from talking to Sean how much he cares for and believes in his employees. This is one of those places you hear about but rarely find – a place where young folks start working at while they’re still in school and then never leave. They treat their employees like family and empower them to live their best lives, which leads to tremendous satisfaction and pride in their work. Perhaps the most impressive part of the MWNW

opera tional plan is their third prong: prioritizing SEAN HATHAWAY Owner philanthropic activity in the communities they serve. Not satisfied with simply donating money (although they generously do that as well), Sean and the MWNW team incorporate charitable giving into their entire corporate culture. Walk into any one of their stores at nearly any time, and you’ll probably see them promoting some sort of fundraising event, whether it’s in support of Polar Plunge For Special Olympics Oregon, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, or one of our local schools. In the month of February, all locations will be asking for donations to support the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas County, a wonderful organization that works to offer services not provided by other agencies for homebound, frail and geographically isolated individuals. Their programs provide independence, improve quality of life, and prevent or end abuse, neglect (including selfneglect) and exploitation of at-risk seniors and adults with disabilities. Mattress World Northwest is gladly donating $5000 to the cause, in addition to educating customers about this group and offering to take donations on their behalf. Please help raise funds by donating online or visiting one of their local stores. Family owned and operated, and dedicated to providing their customers with the best products at the best prices, all while donating to and participating in their local communities – Mattress World Northwest exemplifies the best of what retail businesses have to offer. This proves that not all mattress stores are created equal. Get a better night’s sleep and help support your community by visiting the Mattress World Northwest Canby store located at 298 Northwest 1st Avenue. Call them at 503-266-6771 for more information. They are open every day from 10am-7pm or you can order online at mattressworldnorthwest.com. ■

RECIPE

Chocolate Fondue

Whether you’re planning a romantic evening with that special someone, or you want a fun and tasty treat for the whole family to enjoy, this Chocolate Fondue recipe is sure to be a Valentines hit! It’s easy to make, even without a fondue pot. Serve it with dip-ables such as strawberries or other slices of fruit, shortcake, pretzels, marshmallows, brownies or cookies. If you want to make a special adults-only version, try adding a couple tablespoons of Bailey’s or Amaretto for some extra flavor! INGREDIENTS: 12 ounces of milk or dark chocolate (chips or roughly chopped if from a block) 1 Cup (8 ounces) of heavy whipping cream A pinch of salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the cream with a pinch of salt over medium heat in a small saucepan until tiny bubbles show and it begins to lightly and slowly simmer. 2. Remove from heat, add the chocolate, and whisk until smooth and full incorporated. 3. Immediately transfer to a fondue pot heated at low or with a low flame, or serve straight from the pot. 4. Arrange the dip-ables on a platter or plates around the chocolate pot. Use a fondue fork, bamboo skewer, seafood fork, or salad fork to dip the fruit pieces and other dippables into the hot melted cream chocolate mixture. Eat immediately. If the fondue begins to feel a little stiff, add a tablespoon of heavy cream and stir. It will help it go a little longer. *recipe reprinted from simplyrecipes.com

L E G A L M AT T E R S

Legal Advocates of the Canby Community by Tyler Franke, Active Media Contributing Writer he story of Reif & Hunsaker Law Firm is that of a true Canby legacy. Attorney Ray Reif started practicing law here in Canby back in 1964, though he was well known to many community members long before that. “Before he started practicing law here, he was actually the agricultural science teacher at Canby High School,” says Jim Hunsaker, the current owner and managing attorney of the firm Reif started. “It’s amazing - I still have clients who come in who had Ray as their ag teacher in the 1950s!”

Like any solid law firm or business, Reif & Reif built its reputation on the quality of its work, but the Reifs also cared deeply about the community, and that’s another legacy that Jim and his firm are pleased to carry forward.

You don’t have to leave Canby to find the right lawyer.

Reif was joined (and ultimately succeeded) by his son, Roger Reif. The two practiced together as Reif & Reif for a number of years, and in the 1980s built the current offices on Grant Street that still house Reif & Hunsaker.

Jim purchased the firm from Roger Reif in 2014, after a long and successful career with a large firm in Denver. Despite his “big city” job, Hunsaker lived and raised his children in a small, rural town outside of Denver that he says was very similar to Canby, and he was happy to make the change. “I went from a commute of more than an hour to just a few minutes, especially when I can beat the train!” he quips. But there was another reason Canby appealed to Jim and his family: his wife actually grew up here and graduated from Canby High. In fact, her grandparents hadevenbeenclientsofRayReif. Talk about a small world! “For us, Canby really was coming home,” he says. Roger Reif continued to practice with Hunsaker until

2015, when he retired after a legal career spanning four decades. “There was a Reif practicing law in Canby for over 50 years,” Jim says. “They developed a very loyal and broad client base here, and it’s a great testament to their work that so many clients that worked with Ray or Roger are now working with me. They built an incredible legacy.”

“That’s really so important to us,” he says. “We’re involved in the Chamber and Rotary. We have sponsored the Canby Gators swim team, the Canby High School softball and snowboard teams, and the Canby FFA. We also support The Canby Center and The Canby Adult Center and the critical work they do in the community. We try to help wherever we can.”

Professionally, Reif & Hunsaker still brands itself as a “small-town law firm,” meaning they do a little bit of everything: real estate, estate planning and probate, contracts and corporate law, agricultural law, landlord law and some family law. “Almost anything you can think of in and around Canby,” Jim sums up. The firm doesn’t handle bankruptcies, criminal defense or high-end litigation, however. Reif & Hunsaker also boasts the talents of two other associates, Breckenridge Cartwright and Alex Redmond.

HIS TORY

MARKS PRAIRIE by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

uch of our Canby History can be traced back to the times of pioneers, covered wagons, and the Oregon Trail, so it is not surprising to discover that the Mark Memorial Park and Mark Prairie Schoolhouse south of Canby share these origins as well. Both the park and the school, as well as the road they are located on, are named for the family of pioneer John Mark. John was born in Philadelphia on January 11th, 1795 as the son of an Irish weaver. When he was still a child, his family relocated to Lee County, Virginia, where he later joined the Virginia Militia before being inducted into the U.S. Army. In January 1815, John fought in the Battle of New Orleans, one of the last and largest battles in the War of 1812. After the war he returned to Virginia, where he married his childhood sweetheart, Martha Frances (Fanny) Forrester, in July of 1818. After the death of his mother, John moved his family to Harlan, Kentucky, and then in 1838 they moved again to Missouri. It would seem that John wasn’t satisfied with staying somewhere for very long. In the spring of 1847 he and his family left Jackson County, Missouri on a covered wagon, headed for the Oregon Trail. They arrived in Oregon City on October 12th of that year, via the new Barlow

Trail. The family consisted of John, who was 52 at the time, his wife Fanny, two sons, four daughters and two grandchildren. Their eldest daughter, Mary Ann, and her husband, Jacob Adams, had braved the trip with their two small children, Harrison, age 6, and Margaret Elmira, age 5. John and Fanny’s other married daughter, Elizabeth, lost her husband on the journey. They had no children. Upon their arrival in Oregon, John traded a yoke of oxen and a wagon (or a mare, depending on who you ask) for 640 acres of land with a cabin, located south of the Molalla River. His eldest son, Alexander, selected 320 acres south of his father’s farm, and Jacob and Mary Ann selected 640 acres further south, adjoining Alexander’s land. With the Mark family owning such a large portion of the new territory, a settlement of sorts was slowly taking shape, and the name Marks Prairie was taking hold. Alexander built a southern-style home on his land, probably in remembrance of the family home in Virginia. On February 21st, 1854 he married Sarah Jane Jordan, who had crossed the plains with friends in another train. Death claimed Sarah Jane within five years of marriage, leaving three little children for Alexander

with terms from three weeks to five months, and in the first four recorded years of the school a total of eight instructors taught there. In 1904, the first eight-month school year was introduced. Salaries averaged $55 per month, until 1919, when the district shelled out the handsome amount of $125. The number of children attending varied from 62 to 39 in later years, with all eight grades in one room. The teacher boarded with a local family in the community and often did his or her own janitorial work.

to care for. He managed to do so with the assistance of his sister, Luvina Shirley, who by this time had four children of her own. Twelve years later Alexander married a widow, Mary Susan (Hill) Sparks, who had three children of her own. The couple eventually had three more children, bringing the total to 9. As a strong believer in education, Alexander provided tutors for his children and others in his home. Later he built a log schoolhouse for all of the neighboring children to attend as well. Tragically, though, the building was destroyed after only a few years.

When the Marks Prairie School District joined with the Canby District in 1946, the building and grounds ceased to be used as a school. Rather than reclaim the property, the Mark heirs deeded the property to the Marks Prairie Community Club, an organization which had been formed to manage the property, but is no longer active. (CONTINUES ON NEX T PAGE)

After the Marks Prairie School District boundaries were established by county officials in May of 1879, Alexander and his wife again demonstrated their commitment to ensuring the education of local children by giving two acres of land to the district to be used for school purposes. The district was to build the schoolhouse and maintain the road. According to the original deed, when it ceased to be used for two consecutive years, the tract would revert back to the designated heirs. The lumber for the school building was hauled from Cole’s sawmill on the south bank of the Molalla River, probably near the old river crossing and what is now Goode’s Bridge. The original building is still standing and, in fact, has been changed very little over the years. The oldest county school records date back to February of 1900, when T. A. Campau began teaching 50 pupils for a term of three weeks at $35.00 per month. The next teacher, Chas. A. Mishler, also received $35 per month for a term of 12 weeks, with 59 pupils enrolled. MARKS PRAIRIE ... continued

In 1948, the remains of the Mark pioneers were relocated to the site, using the tombstone from the original Mark cemetery for the monument. The property was then named Mark Memorial Park by county officials. The woodshed was moved to the rear sometime around 1949 and transformed into a kitchen. Since that time, the school site has served the needs of the community in providing a meeting place for family reunions, wedding receptions, parties, picnics, church groups, 4-H clubs, a mother’s club, Extension club, and monthly meetings of the Community Club. In 1979, the Community Club celebrated the 100th birthday of the district with a picnic held at the park. More than 100 attendees signed the guest book, and it was a wonderful day of visiting and meeting new

friends. Unfortunately, the school bell could not be rung, as it had been stolen. A major restoration was undertaken in 1993, and a concrete foundation was placed under the building to strengthen and straighten it. A well was drilled five years later and a new cedar shingle roof was installed on the main building. The bell was also replaced. In 2010, the Community Club changed its name to Mark Prairie Historical Society and obtained 501(c)(3) status. Today, the building remains in good condition and is often used for community meetings or by various religious groups. Half of the east wall is lined with framed 4-H Club Achievement Certificates. Every year since 1925, the descendants of John Mark have returned to the old schoolhouse for a family reunion and picnic on the fourth Sunday of July. In nearly a century, this event has been missed only 3 times (including 2020 for obvious reasons). However, the family still met via Zoom, which actually allowed more relatives to join since they didn’t have to make the drive. COMMUNIT Y

CANBY KIWANIS by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

ore than 800 adults and 900 children in the local area received toys and grocery money this Christmas thanks to the Canby Community Food & Toy Drive event, organized by Canby Kiwanis and held at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. The annual community event is a Canby tradition for more than five decades, but was not guaranteed to happen this year due to the ongoing pandemic and the fact that many Kiwanis volunteers are in at-risk age groups. However, as longtime Kiwanis member and volunteer Todd Gary admitted, without the Food & Toy Drive, it just wouldn’t be Christmas. “This makes my Christmas, you know?” Gary said of the event as he helped to organize volunteer deliveries of grocery cards and toys for those who were not able to pick theirs up at the fairgrounds. Gary wasn’t the only one who couldn’t imagine a holiday season without the drive, so through determination and optimism, they found a way to make it happen. Needless to say, current guidelines and restrictions drastically changed the way the event collected, organized and distributed the donations of toys and food.

The new Children’s Area at Canby Public Library was sponsored by the Canby Kiwanis. 58 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

With schools not meeting in person, the traditional canned food drives were quickly nixed. Instead, Kiwanis elected to hand out grocery cards for an estimated amount of $32,000, which went out to 371 families. Luckily, the City of Canby was able to get creative with some of its federal CARES Act funding, and allocated $15,000 to help ensure the drive could serve all who were in need. “This is the first year that the city has given us money, and that made a huge difference,” said volunteer Luana Hill. “We appreciate all the things that everyone in the community has done. We’ve never asked for much money before, but this year, we have gotten so many donations, big and small. It has been really heartwarming to see the community support.” In the end, a total of 1,771 people (863 adults and 908 children) were served during the two days of distributions. Kiwanis was one of the first civic clubs in the area to make the transition to a virtual meeting format. “Everybody really jumped on board with it right away,” said Kiwanis Club President Angela Baker. With a laugh, she added. “I was really surprised by how many people were able to log on and figure Zoom out when even I was still trying to figure out that technology.” Because the traditional noon meeting time (even via Zoom) may not work for every member’s schedule, especially if they have to work or are at home caring for children, the club recently added a once-a-month evening meeting: Kiwanis After Dark. Luana Hill was one of the big proponents of making that jump, she said, and there was a very good reason for that. “I felt really strongly that if we didn’t get on Zoom right away and keep people pulled together, that we would just lose our club,” she admitted. “And I’m glad we did, because of how long this has gone on. I wouldn’t say anybody loves it. I think we would all prefer meeting in person, but it has really helped a lot.” For more information about Canby Kiwanis and its work in the community, visit canbykiwanis.org. ■

MEET THE STUDENT

Ja m i Meet the 2020 International Higher Education Student of the Year for New South Wales, Australia! organization that offers health and wellness resources, as well as a sense of community, for people living with a chronic illness. “I feel so honored to have won this award,” Jami said. “When I think about it in the context of all of the challenges I have overcome and everything I have been through, I feel so thankful to be here in Sydney and studying at ACU.”

by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

C

anby native Jami Emerson has received a unique honor on the other side of the world: she was recently named the 2020 International Higher Education Student of the Year in the Australian state of New South Wales. The 27 year old is currently an information technology student at Australian Catholic University in North Sydney. She has a passion for personal and corporate social responsibility and is known for her relentless commitment and leadership skills. “Being from the United States, Jami understood the need for international students to have opportunities to develop their skills for employment outside of university,” the awarding body, Study NSW, said in a press release. “As part of her charity, Jami offers volunteer opportunities to international students to help kickstart their careers.” Jami can proudly claim credit for her diligent work with many charitable organizations. She is the founder-in-residence for the UTS Techcelerator Female Founder Mentoring Program, a program for entrepreneurial women at the University of Technology Sydney, which develops insights into how social responsibility can benefit organizations, businesses and communities. In receiving the honor, she was also particularly highlighted for her work as the founder of Chronic Hope, a Sydney-based

Getting to this point in her life involved a long and difficult journey. At the age of 22, Jami was in a car accident that left her with serious injuries and, as she discovered later, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a condition that dominated her life for years. CFS is characterized by debilitating tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest. At the time of the accident she was back in Canby visiting her family, on holidays from Paris where she was living and studying economics. In the aftermath of the accident, Jami was too sick to continue her studies. She withdrew from her degree and returned to the U.S., spending the next two years recovering with the support of her family and friends. But by 2018, she was getting restless. While she had always dreamt of moving to Australia, traveling across the world while struggling with a chronic illness seemed like a crazy thing to do. Not one to back down from a challenge, however, Jami saw it as a way of reclaiming her life and proving to herself that she was more than just her illness. “I thought to myself, it’s now or never,” she said. “If I have a health crash, I’ll fly home and that will be that, but I want to do this, because this is a dream that I’ve had.” She arrived in Sydney on a working holiday visa. It was during her first year in Australia that she started thinking about transforming her struggle with CFS and turning it into something that could help others. In 2019, she launched Chronic Hope; the following year, she applied to study at Australian Catholic University.

Emerson that positive impact is exactly what Jami is achieving. Through podcasts, blogs and original music, Chronic Hope is reaching an ever-growing audience of people living with chronic illnesses.

Her story resonated with the university: Jami received a scholarship that covered the full cost of her tuition, something that she says has profoundly changed her life. “I get emotional talking about it,” she said. “That this university has seen my potential and what I’ve been through and said, ‘We’re going to believe in her and give this to her and see what happens’, I’m tearing up thinking about it.” In fact, Jami and ACU turned out to be the perfect match. “One of the things I love about ACU is their desire to empower students to have an empathetic mindset when it comes to their careers and having a positive impact on the world,” she says, and

The organization also provides volunteer placements for international students, helping them build professional experience in a start-up environment. Over at Techcelerator, Jami is taking the knowledge she’s gained through launching a start-up and sharing it with other young women with big ideas. Not bad for a student who’s just finished her first year of study - imagine what she could do next! For more information on Chronic Hope, visit chronichope.org. ◾
