WiFi Woes
Does this sound familiar? It’s a typical weekday and everyone in the Fyber family is online. Allyson is uploading large files for work while streaming a Kenny Chesney music station on Pandora. Steve is using the Google Home tablet in the kitchen to watch a YouTube recipe and prepare the family lunch. Teen Ryan is “in class” on Zoom but may or may not also be playing a virtual NBA 2K21 game in the background. Jill is live streaming her school classes on a laptop but suddenly all the faces freeze on the screen. She yells,
“The WiFi is super slow again!” Could it be because the family’s four smartphones are also connected to WiFi, and just began to download updates? Or perhaps the Ring doorbell sent a video stream notification to Steve’s smartwatch when the delivery driver placed a package on their porch. Maybe, the neighbor decided to “borrow” their WiFi signal again to watch a favorite Netflix series. Regardless of the reason, this family seems to constantly run into issues with slow load times, buffering, and spotty WiFi signal. Let’s take a quick look at why this might be happening.
Device Overload? All of these devices share the same connection. Congestion happens when there are too many devices competing for bandwidth at the same time. If the Internet lags when browsing the web, streaming video, or playing games, too many devices may be on the network at the same time. In fact, the average American home has 13 devices connected at once. If it is a device overload situation, the Fyber family may need to call their provider and increase their Internet speed to resolve the congestion issue.
Is it the WiFi or the Internet? While some people think of Internet access and WiFi as the same thing, there is a key difference. Your service provider connects your home to the Internet with wiring to give you access to the network via a plug-in jack on the wall. Computers and devices connected directly to this jack with cables tend to have

the best online performance. WiFi is provided by a wireless router inside the home so that mobile devices, laptops, etc. do not need a physical connection to be online. Sometimes, problems with the wireless router may leave these WiFi devices offline, while the wired devices connected to the wall jack continue to work just fine. However, the Fyber family has too many devices and too much going on in their lives to worry about connecting to their home network through a bunch of cords running through the house. This is where the convenience of WiFi comes in.
Old Devices? Both the age of your WiFi router as well as the age of the connected devices play a role in performance. Newer equipment may operate without problem but older devices may struggle with the enhanced features of software updates, modern apps and websites. Routers more than 4 years old may not be capable of delivering current Internet speeds. For example, the Fyber family subscribes to 500 Mbps Internet speed, but their WiFi router is old and can only broadcast 250 Mbps. This means that while Allyson’s wired work computer enjoys access to the full 500 Mbps, everyone else in the Fyber family is throttled to use about half that speed, which increases the likelihood of devices fighting for their share.
WiFi Router in the Wrong Spot? Ensure the WiFi equipment is optimally placed in the home. It is recommended to keep your router in a central location and not hidden behind a door, in a cupboard or behind furniture which may actually block the signal. If the Fyber family’s router is more than 4 years old, is not optimally placed in the home, or limits Internet speed, they might consider replacing it or adding a professional-grade service like WiFi Home Networking from a provider like DirectLink.

MEET THE BAKERS
B’s Bake Shoppe Story and photos by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
2020
wasn’t exactly the first year of business they might have hoped for, but Bethany and David Zito of B’s Bake Shoppe, are grateful for the journey they’ve enjoyed since opening their scratch bakery and cafe in downtown Canby last July. “It’s crazy,” Bethany said with a laugh. “It doesn’t feel like a year, because so much has happened. We’ve had COVID, the wildfires, the ice storm and power outage, all of the holidays... It hasn’t been what we expected, but it sure hasn’t been boring.” B’s Bake Shoppe is the culmination of a dream Bethany has harbored ever since she started in the industry at the age of 15. She has worked for and with some of the world’s top chefs, and David also started working in professional kitchens as a teen and has a background in classic French and Italian cuisine.
and other desserts. But they’ve also continued to experiment, sometimes hitting the jackpot with recipes like their apple cheddar walnut loaf. “That kind of surprised us,” Bethany said. “We thought people would be a little weirded out by that, but they come in specifically on Saturdays for that. They’ll call and make sure they can get one.”
Together the Zitos have been able to build their clientele and develop a foothold in the growing Canby culinary scene, thanks to their quality recipes and ingredients, hard work, creativity and their willingness to take feedback from their customers. “We weren’t doing sandwiches when we first started,” Bethany recalls. “But we had a lot of people coming in asking for more than pastries, and we thought, ‘Let’s build on this.’ We’ve definitely added and even shifted some things as we’ve continued to hear from people. If we can do it, we’ll make it happen.”
B’s offers a rotating weekly menu of house breads, which they can sell as whole loaves or sliced. They’ve also recently rolled out a new “bread card,” where if you buy six fresh loaves, your seventh is free.
B’s Bake Shoppe has kept producing their staple products, including their world-famous pretzels, handmade house sourdough, focaccia and baguettes, truffles, pastries, candy
Sometimes, B’s version of something like a traditional breakfast sandwich is a little more upscale and gourmet, like their mouth-watering Canadian bacon and cheddar croissant. Other times, the most striking difference is the size. “One of the big sellers, something people really love, is the cheesy sausage biscuit,” said Bethany. “It’s just like a really big, substantial version of a fast food biscuit sandwich. We make all of the sausage in house, too.” B’s will soon be bringing back its ever-popular s’mores candy bar treat (just in time for summer) and their freezer is always stocked with various flavors of their homemade, extra-creamy ice cream. “The flavors change all the time, but we try to always have our brown sugar vanilla and chocolate malt,” Bethany says. “It’s churned and really more like gelato than store-bought ice cream. But everyone seems to really like it.” Check out B’s Bake Shoppe at 113 NW 2nd Avenue in the Dahlia building in downtown Canby. Give them a call at 503-266-2004 or visit their website, bsbakeshoppe.com, for more information.

Cutsforth’s Market Catering
“The Secret Service guy came into the kitchen and inspected all my food,” Tom recalls. “He says, ‘I have to eat everything you’re going to serve him.’ I’m like, ‘What a great job!’”
By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
C
utsforth’s Market Catering is back, under the steady and experienced hand of Tom Kerr. Tom boasts nearly five decades of experience in the restaurant and food service industry, most of it in catering. He’s been cooking since he was a young kid, which he jokes was a survival necessity in his house. “My mom was a terrible cook, so I dabbled in cooking a lot when I was growing up,” he says with a chuckle. “When I was about 10, I told my mom I could cook breakfast better than she could, and lo and behold, I was right.” Throughout high school, Tom worked part-time at restaurants and pizza parlors before landing a job at the prestigious Portland Golf Club in the mid-70s. “I worked my way up from head dishwasher to sous chef, which was second in command,” he says. “It was a great, fun place to work. If you ever saw Caddyshack, believe it or not, it was just like that.”
Eventually he left the Golf Club and started his own company, Tom’s Wilsonville Catering Company, which he operated out of Wilsonville Lanes until the bowling alley closed permanently in April 2020. Now Tom has teamed up with Cutsforth’s Market, and he’s bringing his full range of skills and services to the Canby area. “We’re looking to really build this up and get things rolling,” he says. “We can do everything: banquets, private events, weddings, business lunches and events. We even have a food cart now. It’s all been redone and ready to go.” Tom’s skills and experience, combined with Cutsforth’s long tradition of serving Canby customers hearty meals and quality food, now allows the catering department to put together an astonishing variety of menus suitable for any event. Cutsforth’s can even host events in their Old Towne Hall meeting space, which is regularly used by civic clubs and local organizations like Canby Rotary, Canby Kiwanis and the Canby Area Chamber. Or Tom and his team can take their show on the road: “With our food cart redone, we can take it out to any event and do any kind of food they want.”
He worked under the legendary Gerald Ingelhop, a German immigrant and one of only a handful of master chefs (known as “Black Hat” chefs) in the world at that time. “He was a very colorful character,” Tom says. “He had that old school upbringing. Everything was ‘Yes, sir,’ ‘No, sir,’ ‘What can I do for you next, sir?’ But I learned a tremendous amount.” It was also at that job that he got the catering bug, as the Club started its own in-house catering company during his tenure, which was marketed exclusively to members. He catered several high-profile events, including a birthday party for then-Governor Vic Aityeh. 12 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

Once you’ve tried it though, you’ll see what all Katy has been proud to take the reins of this burger legacy, which began with her Grandpa Bruce and was followed by her father Alan, who is semi-retired. You could say that she knew it was her destiny; “The whole time through college I was always thinking ‘how could I apply this to Big Burger?’” she says, “That is when I was like, yes I want to do this.”
Big Burger’s formula for success is simple: good old fashioned burgers and shakes, made fresh and served with a smile. “It’s kind of in the middle of fast food and sit-down,” Katy says. “It’s better quality than other places.” Take one bite, and you’ll taste that quality. Big Burger’s burgers are far and away better than most any others and they do take a little longer to prepare, but that’s a tradeoff customers are willing to tolerate, because it’s so worth it. How about secondary living space as kids move back home or we take in other family members? Many have realized that working remotely, they can live in different locations now, not necessarily where their “job” is located and are looking for warmer climates, or perhaps moving closer to other family members! Regardless of which scenario above you might find yourself in, we are here to help you! We all know through personal experience and years of helping others buy and sell that this process can be extremely stressful and our objective is to help ease and manage that stress for you utilizing our knowledge and long standing, developed resources to create a seamless and manageable transaction!

ACADEMY MORTGAGE
At Home In Canby By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos Jayme Romine
A
nyone who’s been living in the Portland Metro Area for the past year knows that the real estate market is on fire right now. Record low inventory of available properties simultaneously mixed with exceptionally low interest rates means that it’s a great time to sell and to buy! If you’re even considering getting into the real estate market, now is absolutely the time to do it. Don’t let trepidation over the current conditions keep you from taking advantage of such ideal conditions. You don’t have to do it alone! There are experts out there to help guide you, and the best of the best are right here in Canby. Academy Mortgage is a nationwide corporation that has been in existence for over 30 years and has become one of the nation’s largest independent mortgage lenders. At the core of their success lies the belief that the American Dream is built upon sustainable homeownership. That does not mean shackling clients to a mortgage they can’t afford; no one “dreams” of that! Sustainable homeownership means owning the “home of your dreams” while simultaneously retaining the additional funds you need to live your 20 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
best life. Utilizing a plethora of innovative home mortgage tools they have at their disposal, the professionals at Academy Mortgage are able to educate and help navigate their clients through the entire process, starting with the establishment of an appropriate price point from which to begin their search. Their people-centric and purpose-driven mission is to provide this service (sustainable homeownership) by inspiring hope, making dreams a reality, and building prosperity in the families and communities they serve. We are fortunate here in Canby to have a branch staffed by one of the best in the business, Vanessa Zimmerman. She’s been in the financial industry for over 20 years now; starting out as a financial coach, and then eventually transitioning to loan officer. Helping people with their finances is one of the greatest joys of her life. While coaching alone wasn’t enough to satisfy her lofty goals, Vanessa was able to utilize everything she learned in her earlier role and apply it to her current position. Finding Academy Mortgage was the final piece of the pie. Here Vanessa has found a home. As she says on her website: “It’s all
about service at Academy Mortgage, and our company has been meeting the needs of homebuyers across the United States since 1988. I joined Academy because of its strong reputation for integrity-based mortgage lending, its unwavering commitment to responsible lending practices, and for its broad portfolio of mortgage solutions and tools.” Need more convincing? Here are a few more factors to consider. First of all, Vanessa is available to help you 24/7! One of the biggest disadvantages of going through banks is that they work bank hours. Vanessa and her team at Academy Mortgage are available 7 days a week, morning or night. Secondly, they have very competitive rates. Because they have such positive working relationships with so many different institutions and investors, not to mention one of the broadest product mixes in the industry, they are able to consistently provide lower rates. Third, Academy Mortgage has the distinct advantage of being a Direct Lender, which means that her branch (and regional offices) are equipped to complete the entire loan process here locally. She literally handles everything from start to finish and is current on the status of your loan at all times. That results in higher efficiency, quicker turnaround times, and more direct (and consistent) communication. There is no downside to working with Vanessa or Academy Mortgage! Besides the fact that Vanessa absolutely and sincerely believes in Academy Mortgage and the work she is so blessed to be doing, she is also incredibly grateful to be a part of the Canby community. When I had the pleasure of speaking with her for this interview, she gushed over Canby incessantly! As a newer business owner (she has been running this location for just 2 years now), she has not even remotely hesitated, but instead jumped straight in with both feet; joining the Chamber of Commerce (where she is now on the board), and participating in many local events. Her warm, affable nature and obvious love of the community has brought her great success. After having been open less than a year, she needed an assistant, and hired Ginny Lundy to help with the behindthe-scenes stuff. She credits Ginny with
being a “game changer” and someone she has come to rely on without hesitation. Ginny states, “I have worked in the mortgage business for over 20 years. I love how Academy Mortgage focuses on helping families and communities. They genuinely care about their employees, which is amazing.” A few months later, they outgrew their original location (at the Bell Building) and moved to their current location on 99E. Not even a year after that, she hired a 2nd assistant, Desiree Sutton. Desiree is actually a licensed loan officer herself, writing loans alongside Vanessa, but also assists with many of the front-end tasks such as preapprovals, verification of employment on applicants, etc. She has proven to be equally valuable to the team. “I literally couldn’t do this without the assistance of both Ginny and Desiree. They are pivotal to my success,” Vanessa stated. Desiree added, “I love helping people with the dream of home ownership.” Vanessa is a true humanitarian, like many others within the Academy Mortgage Corporation, and has an almost insatiable desire to “give back” to the community she works in. Academy, and their corporate culture provides her the opportunity to do just that. While it’s been difficult during COVID, she’s still managed to sponsor and participate in various Chamber events, give “porch drop-offs” (flower arrangements)
to past clients and community members to raise spirits during the pandemic, and give out “closing gifts” to clients who’ve closed on their loans (chocolates and treats she’s purchased from local businesses). When considering loan institutions for your next home buying experience, there’s no need to look beyond Academy Mortgage. Vanessa and her team are knowledgeable experts who know the local market, and pride themselves on providing the best products and services available. They understand that coming to see them is perhaps not the most exciting part of buying a house. But they want to assure you that they do everything in their power to make it as simple and stress-free as possible. With an impeccable reputation in the industry and as many tools geared towards educating you on the process as they have to fund your loan, their quality of service is unmatched. Visit Vanessa’s website today and discover for yourself how easy the process can be using the right people!

PROJECT HAIL MARY By Andy Weir
A new book from the author of The Martian. Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last chance mission and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. This is by far our favorite science fiction book of the year.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
MCLARENS CARPET ONE FLOOR & HOME
McLarens Carpet One Floor & Home Story & Photos by Tyler Francke
S
ince first opening its doors in 1975, McLarens Carpet One Floor & Home has taken enormous pride in helping customers beautify their homes and businesses. Founder Merle “Mac” McLaren had a simple reason for going into business for himself after working for Woodburn Music and Appliance and Woodburn Floors. “They said it couldn’t be done,” said his son, Steve McLaren, who owns and runs the company today. “They said he didn’t have enough money, and it would never work.” They were wrong. Not that Mac did it completely by himself. “I was still in school at the time, so I worked on the weekends,” Steve says. “My two brothers did the same thing.” He laughs as he adds, “We were all deemed cheap labor. That’s what happens. We pretty much started from the ground floor up.” Steve purchased the family business in 1998 when his father retired, and the following year, McLarens joined the Carpet One cooperative. “Best move ever,” he says, some-20 years later. “It gives us the buying power of 3,000 stores — 1,000 of which are Carpet One. It gives us special products and lets us offer much better warranties.” McLarens provides a full range of honest, friendly, and reliable services, offering everything your home might require. From more than 20,000 carpet options to luxury vinyl planks and tiles to hardwood flooring, traditional tiles, countertops, laminates, and even window coverings. After 47 years in the business, Steve has really seen it all. “I love pets,” he said with a laugh. “Pets and indoor plumbing keep us busy.” McLarens’ team of highly trained and experienced personnel handle all aspects of the job, from start to finish. “We do a lot of remodels, as well as new construction. We specialize in coming in, ripping up

everything, putting it back together, making it pretty again. We do free estimates and in-house consultations.” The key to their success is simple: “We’re accessible; we don’t hide,” Steve explains. “If there’s an issue we take care of it then and there. We offer a fair price. Sometimes we’re higher, sometimes we’re lower sometimes we’re in the middle. But we do offer a fair price and we stand behind our products. That’s probably what we’re best known for.” Something else that sets McLarens apart is their Beautiful Guarantee. “If you don’t like your floor for any reason, we will pull it out and replace it one time,” McLaren explains. “Occasionally, we use it. We’ve pulled out a whole house of carpet several times. But it’s there for people to be comfortable with their selection. It’s very rewarding, when you can go out afterward and see it done.” Hard surface flooring has become increasingly popular in home construction and renovations. Another newer trend is curbless or low-curb showers, which accommodate wheelchairs. “If you take what it costs to do it, it’s about two months in assisted living,” he says. “But it can let you stay in your house for a couple of years, so it kind of pays for itself.” McLarens carries a wide variety of hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, ceramic tiles, carpet, all types of countertops including slabs along with window coverings. The 3,700-square-foot showroom and store is located at 24403 Oregon Highway 99E in Canby. Call them at 503-266-4095 or visit online at mclarenscarpetonecanby.com.

CANBY MUSIC IS HAVING A PARTY!
I
t has been 13 years since the original Canby Music store opened its doors, and owner Brian Haines wants to invite all of Canby to come celebrate with them! Brian started the original store all the way back in 2008, and ever since then the small-town full service music store has enjoyed tremendous growth, especially in the last few years. As a thank you to the Canby Community for the unfailing support (especially during the last year) Canby Music will be hosting an outdoor barbeque lunch on Saturday, June 5th between 11am and 2pm. Burgers, hot dogs, and all the fixin’s will be provided free of charge, and they’ll be accepting donations to help cover the cost. There will be lots of room to spread out so everyone can eat, enjoy the sunshine, and have a fantastic time! While you eat your lunch, you’ll be treated to live music performances featuring the employees of Canby Music, plus some very special guest performers, including some of the students who take lessons there. Not only that; there will also be prize giveaways and special sales throughout the store! So stop by Canby Music on Saturday, June 5th to get a free and tasty lunch, help a small business celebrate more than a decade in business, and have an all-around great afternoon!

SUMMERSGIVING
National Olive Day, on June 1st each year, celebrates one of the world’s oldest fruits. The olive is part of a traditional meze/tapas culinary experience that brings families and friends around the table rather than in the kitchen sharing time together. Another symbol we receive from this delicious fruit is the olive branch. As a symbol of peace, hope, love and friendship, it’s another excellent reason to celebrate the day and acknowledge the joy this little fruit provides.

THE CHAMBER CORNER
JUNE-JULY 2021
MEET THE PRESIDENT: My name is Tyler Nizer and I am humbled to be the Canby Area Chamber President. It has been a pleasure to be part of the Chamber for 6 years now. I have tried to bring my experience with events and tourism to the Chamber. I have a passion for Clackamas County and a special place in my heart for the Canby community, being born and raised here. My goal is to be a benefit to the local residents and small businesses that make up this great community. We are working hard at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center to bring fun events through the pandemic for everyone in the surrounding area to enjoy in a safe manner. The Chamber has done some amazing work support ing local businesses through this tough time, and we are grateful to have Kyle Lang as the executive director making this all possible. If you haven’t been to a Chamber meeting, I encourage you to check out CanbyAreaChamber.com to connect with them as it will be a great benefit to your business. The Canby Chamber of Commerce is excited to be entering the summer season and would like to invite you to participate in our July 30th golf tournament, “A Swinging Good Time,” at Frontier Golf Course. We are currently seeking sponsors and teams for this great 9-hole fun and competitive event whose proceeds go to supporting local businesses in the area. To register or sign up as a sponsor, go to canbyareachamber.org. Come enjoy lunch and 9-holes while supporting a good cause!

- BUILDING COMMUNITY TAKE ACTION
ROTARY SERVICE IN THE YEAR OF A PANDEMIC IN CHALLENGING TIMES ROTARIANS CHOOSE THE PATH OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF. We do this because to freely offer help
and support to other people is to be a citizen of the world. Canby Rotarians are experienced at drawing on varied community resources to address needs effectively. The dignity of a person is precious. Sometimes an act of kindness is what is needed to maintain or even restore dignity to a person who is hungry, ill, homeless, under threat of violence, unemployed, or experiencing a disaster. Some may recover their feeling of self worth because others of us reach out with love and support. When novel coronavirus (COVID-19) grew from an emerging disease across the ocean to a global pandemic, it quickly impacted vulnerable households in Canby with widespread stay-at-home
orders in place and many people who suddenly became unemployed. Local food programs are known to be effective at meeting the need of people who are hungry. Canby Rotarians took quick action to raise money to address hunger as this genuine, immediate need was identified. Club members started thinking about how other community service projects could be modified or new projects could be planned to meet the needs of others. The year of a pandemic motivated Rotarians to be creative and step-up to the challenges. The 70 club members completed 21 service projects and only six projects were cancelled that could not be adjusted to meet pandemic restrictions. The volunteer time donated to the projects exceeded 1400 hours. The total value of the projects was nearly $130,000.

ROTARIANS ARE PEOPLE OF ACTION
MATERNAL & CHILD HEALTH
ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year from causes including malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation. The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on the American economy and the reality is that far more Americans, including children, are facing hunger and poverty today.
A vibrant community with thriving business and industry provides the foundation for its people to survive and find happiness. Canby Rotary Club members believe that all vocations are worthy and encourage full employment and opportunity for self-sufficiency of people.
Programs like Backpack Buddies, Rotary emergency food vouchers, support of the Canby Kiwanis Club Christmas food and toy drive, and blessing bags for the homeless turn the vision of reducing hunger and improving maternal and child health closer to a reality.
BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY
Have you ever thought about the time in your life before you could read? Without strong community support of basic education and literacy many could get left behind in school and, later, in qualifying for a job and economic security because they cannot read well. Canby Rotary literacy and education service projects include college scholarships, school-at-home student desks and school supplies, books for the Canby School District libraries, Reading Rotarians program for elementary school students, and books for the Reading Mentors program for struggling readers hosted by The Canby Center. Nearly $5,000 was spent to encourage reading and improve literacy.
DISEASE PREVENTION & TREATMENT
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Efforts coordinated by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have dramatically reduced polio cases by 99.9% since the first Rotary-sponsored effort to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1978. Polio or poliomyelitis is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children. Polio and other diseases are spread by contaminated food or water. Coronavirus is thought to be spread person-toperson through air borne particles.
The long-running Cutsforth’s Cruise-In Car Show, Clackamas County Junior Livestock Auction, Highway 99E roadside trash clean-up, First Step Training grants for vocational training, Canby High School mock job interviews, and the fun project of building a “snowman” for the downtown display in December are projects that found a way to continue during the year of a pandemic. The $9,000 awarded in First Step Training grants were very much appreciated by recipients working to move forward in sometimes difficult situations. When all is considered, community livability and sustainability is essential for long-term survival of all of us.
DISASTER RELIEF When there is an unexpected disaster, Rotarians step forward to help with the immediate response by offering helping hands and needed supplies. As the response moves to short-term assistance to those impacted by the disaster, Rotarians donate funds and materials needed to provide food; shelter; and access to medical treatment. Rotarians are also in it for the long-term rebuilding of areas where infrastructure such as water, sanitation, roads, schools, and medical facilities have been destroyed or damaged. Canby Rotary members raised funds and donated $16,000 for food distributed by the Canby Center and $5,000 for food distributed by Canby St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. Rotarians volunteered at the food distribution centers. When wildfires threatened homes and communities in our area, Rotarians volunteered at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds evacuation center and donated food and other personal supplies to neighbors and firefighters. After the fires were out, $2,000 was donated to purchase replacement livestock pens for future use at the fairgrounds. Remembering that service to one is service to all of humanity, a Shelter Box kit was bought for $1,000 that is filled with a tent, basic tools, and cooking equipment to provide help to those who have lost their home and possessions in a disaster. The members of the Rotary Club of Canby and its Canby Rotary Foundation have made a commitment to developing and supporting programs that deliver results over the past 40 years. This year of the pandemic is a time to continue this commitment. Rotarians are proud of working together in our community and around the world.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Roof Masters Inc I Story and photos by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
f you can’t find Kyle Christensen anywhere, you may just need to look up. As a third-generation owner and operator of Roof Masters Inc. in Canby, he’s been around (and on top of) the roofing business as long as he can remember. The company was started in 1986 by Kyle’s grandfather, Dee Christensen. “We’ve always been family-owned and operated, and we’ve been in Canby the entire time we’ve been running,” says Kyle. “We’ve been around the local community for so many years, and we plan on being around for a long time yet.”
“
we really pride ourselves on our customer service and the quality of our work
Roof Masters are the local experts when it comes time for your roof to be repaired or replaced. They offer some of the best and most experienced roofing repair and maintenance services you can find anywhere, along with a 10-year workmanship warranty. Roof Masters is fully licensed and insured, and specializes in residential roofs: replacements, cleaning, maintenance and repairs. “We do free estimates and consultations,” Kyle says. “It usually starts with people calling us either because of damage or just deteriorating conditions.”
selves The Roof Masters team can work with any type or rvice construction of roof, including flat roofs, metal, and even shakes. According to Kyle, they ourcomposite also place a high priority on safety to protect their 20 or so employees and their customers. “We make sure our guys are always tied off,” he says. “And we leave in safety anchors if we ever need to go back for maintenance. Basically, if that gutter is six feet off the ground, you have to be tied off.”
If you ever see a Roof Masters crew working on a house, you’ll also notice the sidewalks below may be roped off. That’s to keep you safe, as well as other folks who may be passing by. “We don’t drop tools very often,” 42 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
he says with a laugh. “But, you know, it’s better safe than sorry.”
After being in business so long, Roof Masters has built a trusted name and legacy in the community. “I think a lot of what’s helped us stay in business over the years is we really pride ourselves on our customer service and the quality of our work,” says Kyle. “A very very large percentage of our sales comes from word of mouth. The word gets out there.”
”
All of Roof Masters’ workers are employed by the company, rather than subcontracted, and many of them have been with RM for a long time. “We even have one guy who was hired by my grandfather. He’s seasonal now, but he still comes back to work with us in the summer.” Roof Masters operates year-round, though they tend to focus on repair jobs and more minor projects during the rainy winter months. Re-roofs and other major undertakings are typically done in the summer. “We’re busy all year round,” Kyle says. “This time of year is when we’ll be doing a lot of our tear-offs and other big jobs when you need longer periods of dry weather.” To schedule a free estimate or for more information, call 503-266-5848, email roofmasterscanby@gmail.com or visit roofmastersoregon.com.

LEGAL MATTERS
WHY SHOULD I DO ESTATE PLANNING – I DON’T HAVE VERY MUCH PROPERTY?
The Benefits of Estate Planning P
lanning your affairs in the event of your death is one of the last things many people want to think about. It is also one of the easiest things on which to procrastinate. After all, for many, it is not a major concern - it can always be taken care of at a later date - until something unexpected happens and the lack of planning catches up with you. Planning your estate involves more than simply deciding who receives your assets after you pass away. The following list discusses several of the ways planning your estate sooner rather than later benefits you and your family. NOMINATION OF GUARDIAN FOR CHILDREN: Even if you don’t think your estate will be especially large, preparing a Will can still be valuable, both in practical terms and in granting you peace of mind. For instance – “Who will take care of your children if you cannot do so?” In your Will, you can add a provision nominating guardians for your children if you and your spouse die while your children are still too young to take care of themselves.
allows you to grant legal authority to another person (an “agent”) to perform tasks on your behalf. You are not giving up your own power to do these things. The “durable” power of attorney remains in effect even after you have become incapacitated or incapable of making financial decisions. A power of attorney allows you to designate someone to take care of your affairs after you can no longer manage them yourself. Under a general power of attorney, your agent can do anything that you can do for yourself, including paying bills, writing checks, managing assets, and conducting business for your benefit.
Planning your estate sooner rather than later benefits you and your family.
ADVANCE DIRECTIVE: “Who will make medical decisions for you if you can’t?” The Oregon Advance Directive allows you to nominate people to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to make them yourself. It also allows you to provide guidance about your end-of-life decisions, specifically life support and tube feeding. If you have not nominated a healthcare representative and your health fails to the point where one is necessary, a representative will be selected for you based on Oregon law.
BLENDED FAMILIES: Setting up a comprehensive estate plan is a major benefit for families where each spouse brings in their own, non-joint children to the family. Unfortunately, blended families like these can be a powder keg for family conflict if a parent passes away without proper planning. You and your spouse can minimize this type of conflict by establishing exactly what will happen to your shared assets after you pass away.
Estate planning can feel daunting and complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Our attorneys are happy to sit down with you to answer any questions, address any concerns and help you craft a comprehensive estate plan tailored appropriately to your specific needs and situation. Call us to start your estate plan today, and allow us to help you gain some peace of mind.
POWER OF ATTORNEY: “Who will pay your bills and handle your affairs if you are unable to do so?” A general durable power of attorney is a document that

RECIPE
Grilled Huli Huli Chicken Thighs
June means that perfect grilling weather has finally arrived, so bust out that bag of charcoal or make sure the propane tank is filled - it’s time to turn up the heat with this tangy Hawaiian grilled chicken recipe! It’s so easy and delicious, you may find yourself making it again and again this summer. INGREDIENTS
1 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup ketchup 3/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/3 cup sherry or chicken broth 2-1/2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger root 1-1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 24 boneless skinless chicken thighs (about 6 pounds) DIRECTIONS
1. In a small bowl, mix the first 6 ingredients. Reserve 1-1/3 cups for basting; cover and refrigerate. 2. Divide remaining marinade between 2 large shallow dishes. Add 12 chicken thighs to each; turn to coat. Refrigerate, covered, for 8 hours or overnight. 3. Drain chicken, discarding marinade. 4. Grill chicken, covered, on an oiled rack over medium heat for 6-8 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 170°; baste occasionally with reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes. *recipe reprinted from tasteofhome.com

he first pioneer children in the Canby area began their education in one of two log schoolhouses. The locations are no longer certain (both burned while they were still in use over 150 years ago), but one is believed to have been located east of Canby, while the other was somewhere along the banks of the Molalla River. The town’s first frame schoolhouse was built in 1875 by William Knight, an influential Canby pioneer who had moved to the area with his father and brothers 12 years earlier as part of the Aurora Colony migration led by Dr. William Keil. William Knight was an early railroad agent, and also the owner/proprietor of Knight Mercantile, a downtown general store that served as the first meeting place of the Canby

City Council after the town was incorporated in 1893. Known as the “white school,” the little one-room schoolhouse was situated on land bequeathed by the Wait family in what is now a residential neighborhood on North Holly Street. Canby School District No. 86 was established on July 9, 1887, with the simple goal of giving every child the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential — a mission that continues to this day. The curriculum was centered on the three R’s: reading, writing and ’rithmatic. Say what you will about the current state of public transportation, but the school buses were even less reliable back then. In fact, they didn’t even exist. Instead, children walked to school (“uphill both ways,” probably) or were driven there by horse and buggy. Attendance was not mandatory, and would often plummet during planting and harvesting time, as children stayed home to help their families. This first “in-town” public school was a four-room, twostory building on the corner of North Grant and Fourth Avenue, on land originally owned by the Oregon & California Railroad Company but later donated to the town. (There’s still an elementary school there, named — appropriately a supply of Blue Bags with enoughTo—getafter William Knight.) With a modern high school course in Canby, they can stay home where all the boys and girls of this age should be, and get the same benefits as if in the more populous centers.” The old schoolhouse was sold to a Joseph H. Sutherland for the grand sum of 405 bucks, and relocated to 390 NW Second Ave., where it served as a hotel for the next 50 years, ending its life as a nursing home in 1974. In its place was erected a brand-new, concrete institution, whose strikingly Gothic bell tower would earn it the nickname of the “Canby Castle.” The moniker stuck, even after the bell tower was taken down a few years later. “Large and roomy” was how the Canby Herald described the new building, which, like the TARDIS in Doctor Who, was evidently “bigger on the inside.” Seriously, reporters claimed the building was, quote, “twice as large as it looks from the outside.” They did, however, note its “peculiar construction.” It was the work of the Brass Construction Co. and cost the district $16,457. For that sum, the Castle came complete with nine classrooms, two recreation rooms, a large fuel room, a 300seat auditorium and offices for the principal and an assistant. Despite the Herald’s breathless descriptions, it turned out that the Castle was pretty much exactly as large as it looked from the outside. Intended to serve grades 1 through 12, it was bursting at the seams seven years after it opened, and talk was growing of a separate, “union” high school that would also serve Macksburg, Yost Corner, Marks Prairie, Union Hill, Meridian, Barlow, Lone Elder, Mundorf, Paradise Corner, New Era and others — 16 districts in all.
The dean of Oregon State University spoke at the Feb. 3, 1928, dedication ceremony, while the Willamette University Club provided music. The school housed 150 students that first year. Only about a month passed before it was the victim of its first prank. Unknown parties described by the Herald as “amateur burglars” broke into the high school, stole keys from the principal’s desk and proceeded to ransack the building. The exact same prank, down to the keys being in the same location, was perpetrated nine months later, in December 1928. “The miscreants have not yet been apprehended, although suspicion still rests upon some local parties,” a reporter noted. (CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE)
Representatives of each district unanimously agreed to unify during a meeting at the Methodist Episcopal Church. A new school was needed (classes were originally staged at the former Riverside school building that Canby had acquired and relocated to the corner of what is now Wait Park), but the new union district needed some time to prep for a capital campaign. By 1927, they were ready to build. They just needed the land. The original location was in Oakley Hill, but an alternative was made possible when New Era farmer George Henry Brown, the so-called “Potato King of Clackamas County,” donated 30 acres of his family’s land to further education in Canby. Plans for a sparkling new high school building were soon underway. It would be L-shaped and “state of the art” in all respects. It was made of reinforced concrete, with eight classrooms, a study hall, a library, administrative offices, special vocation classrooms for the teaching of such subjects as cooking and sewing, a cafeteria, a science laboratory and a “farm shop.” CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 53
THE HISTORY OF CANBY SCHOOLS ... continued
Canby lost a piece of its history in 1974, when the city’s 1911 grade school building burned to the ground in a horrific fire. It was known to almost everyone as the “Old Castle,” named after the iconic gothic bell tower with which it was originally built. Though the belltower lasted only a couple of years, the name stuck forever. Though it was no longer used by students, having been converted to administration offices some years before, the Old Castle was indeed occupied when the fire broke out shortly after noon on Tuesday, Feb. 13. A secretary reported the smoke to Canby Grade School Superintendent Paul Ackerman, who bravely attempted to fight it himself with the aid of a handheld extinguisher. He quickly realized he was out of his depth and pulled the alarm for the Canby Fire District. Units from Canby, Oregon City, Clackamas County and Molalla responded, but even so, it took well over an hour to bring the blaze under control. The top two floors of the three-floor structure were completely destroyed.

The district continued to grow, merge and add schools throughout the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. In 1969, the city’s first middle school was built, followed by a new elementary school in 1975. The following year, the school board decided it was high time to give official names to its burgeoning real estate portfolio, and they reached for the local history books to do so. The 1969 middle school was named for Ackerman, the longtime superintendent of Canby Grade School, and one-time, would-be firefighter. The new elementary school nearby, was christened after Canby founding father Philander Lee. The 1947 grade school on North Grant Street – the city’s oldest school building following the loss of the Castle – was named after William Knight at this time. Eccles Elementary had previously been so named in honor of H.H. Eccles shortly after his death in 1955. Trost Elementary School, today the home of the district’s dual language immersion magnet program, opened for the 1993 school year. It was named after Cecile Trost, an education icon whose legacy in Canby spanned four decades – 24 years as a teacher at Eccles Elementary and 14 years as its principal. Prior to that, she had been the last to teach at the one-room Meridian schoolhouse in Whiskey Hill before it closed due to the merger with the Ninety-One School District. She once recalled the day a “three-legged billy goat barged into the classroom and wrought havoc.” She died in 1999, at the age of 88. In 1994, a final unification was voted in by area residents, combining the Canby Elementary, Canby Union High, Carus and Ninety-One school districts. In naming the newly formed district, school board members gave careful consideration to a number of candidates, including South Clackamas, Barlow Trail, Baker Prairie, End of the Trail, Oregon Trail, 84 Square Mile, Red Hot Chili, CCube91 and the Tadbetter School District. Myself, I would have been quite partial to the Red Hot Chili School District. But, I guess, I understand why they chose the name they ultimately settled on: the Canby School District. In 2005, the district completed its growth, for now, with the opening of its newest addition, Baker Prairie Middle School. Long gone were the days that a new school could be had for 16 grand; CSD’s state-of-the-art middle school cost $29 million, and any future additions would be sure to cost even more.

MEET THE ARTIST
Aly Whelchel
Story and photos by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
O
ne of Canby’s top home-grown musical talents is Aly Whelchel, a multi-talented singer and songwriter with jaw-droppingly powerful pipes — whose career was only just beginning when the pandemic put the kibosh on most live performances. Aly, a 2019 grad of Canby High School and an instructor and clerk at Canby Music, also saw her work schedule be impacted, both because of the early shutdown and the store’s move to its new location last summer. “I don’t play a ton of gigs, so that didn’t affect me as much,” she says. “But I still had a lot of time on my hands, and I really wanted to make sure I spent my time well.” For most people, 2020 was not an easy year, but those challenges inspired meaning and creativity for many artists, including Aly. “A lot of songs came out of me during that time,” she recalls. “And there were a lot of musicians rising up in social media, talking about the pandemic and, really, just making it very poetic and beautiful even though it was sad and hard. It was really inspiring.” Her song “Submarine” was a pandemic-era creation, as was “Holy and Sacred,” for which she recorded a music video with a few friends at the Canby Pioneer Chapel last December. The video included a choir of backing vocals drawn from across the community. “It was really fun because I got to have people send in vocal recordings from their homes, which I put

together to make a choir effect,” she says. “In the song, there’s one part where it’s, like, 50 tracks stacked together, and it was actually really difficult to mix, but it was so much fun.” After more than a year out of commission, Aly returned to the “stage” with a live concert on May 8 at “Fort Wayward” - the outdoor dining area of Wayward Sandwiches in downtown Canby. “I am very excited,” she admitted before the show. “It’s been a long time coming. I’ve always been kind of scared and intimidated about doing gigs, but the more it happens, the more I feel like this is really who I am. And I’m so excited to see the people. There’s a whole different kind of energy when people are there, and you go off of that. That’s where the magic happens.” Aly provides a remarkable example of how artists can take the hard times and use them to create something good, useful, and even beautiful. Despite that extraordinary ability, however, I’m sure we can all agree that we’ll be thrilled to have her back at full performance ability as soon as possible! You can find Aly’s video performance of “Holy and Sacred” on youtube.com.

ATHLETIC SPOTLIGHT
Pass It On, Canby! Story and photos by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer PASS IT ON, CANBY! founder Heather Wright Zimmer was inspired to start the youth sports gear recycling program as a coach for her then-6-year-old daughter’s soccer team back in 2019. She noticed one of the players was always late to practice. Then, she learned why. “I realized that she needed to wait until her brother was done with practice, so she could use his soccer gear,” she said. “And I thought, ‘Not in my town.’” Zimmer and other parents were able to quickly cobble together cleats, shin guards and other donations for the family. It was so easy, it begged the question: why not do more? “I just started thinking, ‘How many other kids fit into this category?’” Zimmer recalled. “There are scholarships [for athletic fees] to play, but scholarships for gear don’t exist.” The issue certainly wasn’t a lack of equipment
still in good enough shape to, well, pass it on. As most parents of young athletes know, they tend to outgrow gear before they have a chance to wear it out. “Kids grow so fast at this age, they barely use them,” Zimmer recently said in the storage room for Pass It On, Canby!, holding a barely used kids’ size 10 soccer shoe. But, unless they have younger siblings with similar interests, the equipment usually winds up in yard sales, at Goodwill or forgotten in the bottom of the closet. Enter Pass It On, Canby! The organization began with the blessing (and under the nonprofit umbrella) of Canby Kids, Inc., which has provided youth recreational and competitive teams sports opportunities for children in and around the Canby area since it was founded in 1975. The group partnered with several local businesses to host donation bins, and the gear started pouring in. “In this community, it’s amazing how often people just say, ‘Yes,’” Zimmer said. “People just started donating so much stuff.” According to Zimmer, for the families who have been able to take advantage of the opportunity to “shop” for their children’s youth sports needs at no cost, the sense of relief is obvious. “Maybe they had a hard month or they’re wondering how they’re going to keep their kids in sports when it can be such a huge extra cost,” she said.

“When they’re able to come and get the gear that they need, they realize it’s something they don’t need to plan for.” Pass It On quickly outgrew its original location in a small storage unit and began looking for more permanent digs, which they ultimately found in the basement of Ultimate Team Spirit on Northwest 1st Avenue in downtown Canby. During Covid-19, the nonprofit effort has been somewhat sidelined. While contributions continued to trickle in, the uncertainty of athletic and educational opportunities placed sports on the back burner for many families. Now, however, the requests are coming in hard and fast, particularly for baseball, softball and soccer.
amid the group’s increasingly crowded storage area. “We would love to have it out in the hands of the kids.”
Pass It On is currently offering shopping hours by appointment only, and they can accommodate up to two families for 20 minutes at a time. “This is the last place we want all this gear,” Zimmer said, standing
