ODD MOE’S COMES TO CANBY! by Tyler Francke After two decades serving — and growing — in McMinnville, Salem, Keizer, Hillsboro and Newberg, Odd Moe’s Pizza has come to Canby. Though they have built a loyal following in the state capital — where half of their eight stores are located — co-owner Mike Sublett said he has always been a small-town, community guy at heart. The locally owned and operated company began by engaging the younger markets in McMinnville — especially through the high school and Linfield College — and they hope to do something similar here in Canby. They are located in the Safeway retail complex, which is flooded with teens from Canby High School during the weekday lunch rush. But their commitment to supporting their local communities goes much deeper than that. They have sponsored countless sports teams, helped build a skate park, awarded high school scholarships, done presentations at local schools and offer a number of other avenues for promotion and fundraising to local charities and nonprofits. “You know, it just comes down to what they need, and what we can do,” Sublett says. “And for what we can’t do, we just work on bridging those gaps. 12 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

“I think community is pretty simple. To be a part of it, you just have to be a part of it.” OK — enough about that! I’m supposed to talk about the food in this article. So...it’s good. Like, really good. The highest praise I can offer is that Odd Moe’s “Bull Rider” is the only pie I’ve ever tried where I’ll admit pineapple on pizza makes sense. It’s a unique concoction that features chicken, sausage, bacon and, yes, pineapple, along with a tangy chipotle lime BBQ sauce in lieu of the traditional tomato. The f lavors work together wonderfully well, which is typical of Odd Moe’s menu. Sublett is extremely thoughtful in crafting their combinations. He doesn’t even work with his favorite pizza topping — linguiça — because he hasn’t yet figured out a composition that brings out the unique flavors of the Portuguese sausage, rather than losing or overpowering them. This thoughtfulness comes through in the final product, as does the quality of the ingredients they use and the careful way they prepare them. Odd Moe’s should definitely be tried by all pizza fans, so be sure to stop in if you haven’t already! 

Cathy Rae Smith

by Tyler Francke You may not be familiar with the work of local artist Cathy Rae Smith. Or to put it more accurately, you may not realize how familiar you actually are with the work of Cathy Rae Smith. That’s because Smith is the visionary behind one of Canby’s most wellknown and visible public art pieces: The Magic of Discovery, the 45-footlong mural that flanks the main entrance of the Canby Public Library and Civic Building. She’s also one of the founding members and current president of Canby Area Beautification, a new nonprofit dedicated to helping Canby make good on its nickname, “The Garden Spot,” by organizing public plantings of beautiful growing things along Highway 99E and in the downtown core. Smith won the honor of producing the mural by doing something that is generally not recommended: she proposed something that was clearly outside of what the proposal asked for. “The space is 15 feet by 45 feet,” she explained. “And in the call for artists for that piece, they were looking for three panels, each one 15 feet by 15 feet. And I wrote in and just said, ‘Why don’t you take the 45 feet, and do one nice, expansive visual?’” By commissioning three separate artists, Smith argued, the city ran the risk of a final product that would not fit together well or be very cohesive. The committee liked Smith’s idea of a single, expansive piece, and they asked her to come up with a concept. The rest is history. She built the design from several elements that are near and dear to Canby: a freshly plowed field, ripe for planting; a trio enjoying a break on a park bench, with a bicycle nearby; our iconic gazebo in Wait Park, where an impromptu concert and street dance has broken out; and a boy with his dog, sitting under the shade of an oak tree and reading a book. 24 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

The oak tree’s expansive foliage spans the length of the piece and helps tie all the elements together, as does another feature that is, really, one of the mural’s defining elements: tiny, colorful drawings by local elementary school students that emanate, smokelike, from the books and instruments. “I was thinking about inspiration and creativity,” Smith said, in explaining this aspect of the design. “You know, whether it’s writing or music or painting, whatever form it might take.” She said she wanted to involve the community in some way, and she especially wanted to inspire creativity in children. Library Director Irene Green agreed to help, and they spent a month collecting submissions from local children.

“You know, we have such a charming community, but the introduction for many people is the main thoroughfare of Highway 99E,” she said. “So, that was our first target. It actually was something we started about three years ago, before CAB was officially formed.” The group has been planting knock-out rosebushes and Italian cypress trees along the well-traveled highway that winds through the heart of Canby. “I just thought, if we could really live up to our name, The Garden Spot, it would really add a lot to our community,” she said. The kids were indeed offered a lot of freedom to be creative. They were given little direction other than to use lots of color. “Even the colors you see are the colors that the children chose,” Smith said. “They really are their creations. And I wanted colorful pieces because I wanted to silhouette the figures and the landscape.” The children’s drawings were preserved through the magic of Canby Signs & Graphics, who reprinted the pieces onto a durable alumnium polymer. CSG also produced the black metal parts of the mural, which was its own challenge because there was a hard limit to the amount of weight the wall could bear. With the founding of Canby Area Beautification, or CAB, last year came another opportunity for Smith to use color and creativity to inspire beauty in our community. Smith said the idea for CAB was inspired by Canby’s nickname, “The Garden Spot,” as well as the fact that in some parts of our town, particularly along 99E, we weren’t exactly living up to that name. What Will 2020 Bring to the Real Estate Market?

If you are thinking of buying a new home or selling your

home in 2020, you probably have questions. One question we seem to get all the time these days is, “So, what is up with the market? Are we headed for a recession?” No doubt about it: There is a lot of anxiety about next year’s real estate market. Just last week, at the 2020 Economic Forecast presented by Fidelity National Title, John Mitchell (Chief Economist, M&H Economic Consultants) presented data and statistics showing that we are in “uncharted territory.” Yeah, we know: Not again, right? But it’s true. The usual historical data, cycles and trends are not correlating to the current market trends and conditions. The session ended on a fairly optimistic tone, reiterating that we, fortunately, are in an area that has a stable real estate market. Our economy seems to be managing itself well, despite some red flags that would normally predicate a failing market. Bottom line: nervousness aside, we are currently in the 12th year of upward trend, and 2020 is a good year to take advantage of that with regard to real estate. If you are looking to test the real estate waters next year, here are a few tips that will help ensure you experience smooth sailing.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING... 1. Get with a lender, and get a plan in place. We often have buyers say, “I’m not quite ready!” And we say, “That’s OK!” You don’t have to get pre-qualified, just find a lender and start talking about what to do. A lender can help you do a quick “financial health” checkup and make recommendations for things that should be paid down or paid off, ways you can increase your credit score if it is on the fence, make recommendations on how to best utilize monies you might be saving, give you an idea of what perhaps you could afford (a combination of what you are willing to budget for monthly on your house payment and/or what purchase price you actually qualify for), the amount you may need to save for (closing costs and/or downpayment), etc. It’s never too early to start planning and with some proactive measures, when that “dream house” hits the market, you will be ready and waiting for it! 2. Develop a “Wish List”. Think about what is important to you in your next home. Things to consider include: number of bedrooms, bathrooms, “overf low” space, garage, lot size, amenities and features (walking distance to a certain location, interior finishes, etc). Once you have a list, keep revisiting it. You will find it is “fluid.” Try to start prioritizing your list, with the things that are most important to you at the top. It’s important to prioritize, because it is hard for any Buyer to find a house that meets 100% of what they are looking for. You will find some things are not as important, and you are willing to forego those items. Pro tip: Don’t forget to add “location” to your “Wish List”. 3. Don’t be afraid to start going to open houses, and visiting locations you think you want to live, even if you aren’t quite ready to purchase. Sometimes our list changes when we actually see what 2,000 square feet looks like vs.

Or we may think we want to live in a certain location, until we find that the traffic is heavy or the schools are too far away, etc. Things comes into play with regard to location, such as the property taxes for certain areas. This can also affect your “buying power.” If you are looking to purchase in an area that has high property taxes, this lessens your buying power as you will be spending more monthly on property taxes instead of principal and interest payments. 3. Less is more, so DECLUTTER! Clean all visible areas, tables, counters and window sills. Next, move to “behind the doors” areas. We recommend making three “piles”: Keep, give away and throw away/recycle. This helps reduce clutter, and the things you want to “keep” can be boxed up and stored neatly in closets, garages or stored off-site. When you are ready to sell, you will not be burdened with the “push” to get the home ready to list. It is not unreasonable to think that you could start this part of the process as early as 3-6 months prior to actually putting your home on the market. Decluttering allows potential Buyers to see the actual space they could be living in, and puts you as the Seller one step ahead in packing and being ready to move. That translates to a lot less stress in the process. Overall, remember that every situation, transaction, Buyer and Seller is different. When it comes to buying and selling processes, you can’t compare “apples to apples”; they are all different, as are the needs and desires of each individual involved in the transaction. This plan could include topics such as when you want to move (60 days, 90 days, summer, next year, etc.) and where do you want to move to (local vs. out of state). There are simple, inexpensive options that can massively increase your curb appeal for potential Buyers such as yard clean-up, planting inexpensive landscape vegetation or painting your front door. THE HISTORY OF THE

CANBY PUBLIC LIBRARY by Tyler Francke

n any small town, few public institutions are more beloved, more celebrated, more vital to the health and overall well-being of the community than the local library. Perhaps only the wastewater treatment plant comes close ... and for very different reasons.

Canby has hosted a free, public library since as early as 1896, though the library has taken on many different forms—and many different locations—over the years. The earliest Canby “libraries,” from 1896 to 1916, were tiny collections hosted by an inconstant smattering of downtown business owners. These were, essentially, a 20th century version of the Little Free Libraries that can be found in neighborhoods today. In February 1924, a new organization took shape. The Canby Women’s Civic Club was founded by over 100 local ladies “for the purpose of advancing the educational, moral, civic and aesthetic interests of the town.” “Ambitious” would be an understatement in describing the Canby Women’s Civic Club. Their first goals were to establish an orchestra of young people, reinstate the Canby band and form a reading club, study club and literary society. Oh, and they also decided it was high time Canby had a real library. For the next 100 years, this tradition would continue of strong, active, creative

and civic-minded women leading the charge to build, maintain and strengthen Canby’s library services. For 10 years, the Club kept open a volunteer library in town, but in 1935, the group decided the town finally needed a permanent location with a staff librarian. In 1937, three members, Portia Shewey, Mabel Gabriel and Edna Johnson went door to door to ask for the community’s support, gathering 643 books and a “tidy sum of cash” to start a public library. Their dream became a reality in June of that year, when the Canby City Council agreed to furnish a room, space and lights for a library to be maintained at City Hall. Like the libraries already established in Molalla, Sandy, Milwaukie and Estacada, the Canby library would be a project of FDR’s New Deal, specifically the Works Progress Administration, which employed millions to carry out public works projects in virtually every community in America throughout the 1930s and 40s. Portia Shewey and Edna Johnson were appointed to the first library board, along with Harvey Everhart, Frank T. Cutsforth and George Gabriel. Its first bookshelves were made by the Stefani Lumber Company, and construction for the new library proceeded smoothly. There was just one problem: They didn’t have enough books! The people of Canby and the surrounding areas were asked to donate at least one book to the town’s first

official library. Residents were advised that the books could be dropped off at the Canby Herald office, or any of the board members’ homes. No addresses were given; presumably, in those days, everybody knew where everybody lived. The first librarian was Doris Willbourn, whose position was funded by the National Youth Administration— another New Deal brainchild. Following in her footsteps a few years later was Ora Lee Cattley, whom you might remember our history piece on the Canby Ferry. She was the cousin of M.J. Lee, who “out-christened the Queen of England” the day she smashed a bottle of champagne across the bow of the ferry bearing his name, but she was much more than that. Like Lee, she was a descendant of the town’s earliest pioneers. Her grandparents, Philander and Anna Lee, arrived in the Willamette valley in 1848, and two years later, took title to a 611-acre donation land claim that now lies at the heart of Canby. Her father, Heman A. Lee, was the city’s first mayor when it was incorporated in 1893. Her uncle, Albert Lee, was Canby’s first merchant and also served as its first railroad agent. The youngest of eight children, Ora Lee was a beautiful young woman. In 1910, at the age of 20, she was crowned the first-ever queen of the Clackamas County Fair. Maybe that explains how she was able to out-christen Elizabeth II. Ora shared her family’s passion for civil service and seeing Canby grow. In 1934, she was elected the first female board member for Canby Union High School. She was also a charter member and president of the Canby PTA and was active in a number of other service, historical and fraternal organizations.

Another long-serving librarian was Beth Saul, who worked for the city in a number of roles from 1982 to 2008. In 1985, the library was preparing for yet another move, from the basement of 181 N. Grant St. to the Masonic Building at 288 NW First Ave., when Beth had a novel idea. Rather than boxing up and moving the library’s collection of some 16,000 books, she called on patrons to simply check all the books out, and return them a few weeks later, to the library’s new location. It worked, but not quite as well as she’d hoped. As moving day approached, the library’s collection had dwindled to around 8,000 — still a hefty number. So, Beth hatched a new scheme. She planned to use a quote, “human chain,” made up of 200 local elementary school students to pass the books from one location to the other. Alas, uncooperative weather put an end to this “book brigade” before it even began. Nevertheless, an army of volunteers showed up and, with Beth organizing their efforts, managed to shift all 8,000 books in about 30 minutes. The library ended its nomadic lifestyle in 1989, when Canby voters approved a $600,000 bond measure that allowed the city to purchase and renovate the former Ace Hardware store in downtown Canby. The library’s collection by then had swelled to more than 20,000 pieces, but their new digs had room to grow, with space for double that amount. And grow they did! In 2016, the Canby Public Library moved into a brand new, $6.9 million, 21st century library facility and civic building on NE 2nd Ave. 

She and her husband George for many years ran a diner, the Kozy Corner Confectionary, on the corner of Highway 99E and Ivy. Soup, a sandwich, pie and coffee would set you back 35 cents. The diner was later converted to a Greyhound bus depot. In 1977, the Library Information Network of Clackamas County was established, when voters approved a countywide levy to fund library operations. It formed a consortium of libraries that includes Canby, Molalla and Oregon City, which share revenue, resources and a unified computer system. CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 35

Exercising To Improve Balance

often hear, “I have bad balance. I always have.” For the most part, I disagree with that statement. While some people may have an inner ear issue or other condition that can affect balance, most people are not born with “bad balance.” One way to begin improving balance is to start exercising or make some changes to how you exercise. Poor balance is often due to imbalanced muscles. Lack of exercise causes unused muscles to weaken and eventually atrophy. When your muscles aren’t working in unison, balance can be a challenge. A lack of variety in which muscles are doing the work during exercise will also create a muscular imbalance. If certain muscles are strengthened regularly, while others are used only minimally or not at all, you can’t expect your body to work efficiently. Forcing a few of your muscles to do all the work creates a muscular imbalance that can lead to poor overall balance and even injury.

Making sure that all your muscles get exercise consistently and proportionally is vital to prevent injury and improve and/ or maintain balance. Of course, practicing activities that involve balance is also important. If you don’t practice you won’t improve. And remember, balance involves not just your body, but also your brain! Keeping your brain involved in your physical movement will improve how your body moves and functions overall. Balanced exercise and practicing activities involving balance will improve your balance! Ellie Shorter CANCER PICKED THE WRONG GIRL ... AND THE WRONG TOWN. by Tyler Francke

Recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma (a form

of cancer that affects white blood cells), 16-year-old Canby High School junior, varsity soccer team captain and cheerleader Ellie Shorter says she’s lucky. Not just because of the strong support network from her family and friends; not just because of her team and community, who have already answered the call to help in any way they can; not just because of her faith, which grounds her and gives her hope and strength. No, she’s grateful that cancer picked her. Because she knows she’s strong enough to face whatever lies ahead. “Believe it or not, I’m the lucky one that got diagnosed with this,” Ellie said. “There’s a reason why. And it’s because I’m one of the strongest girls, ever. I live by that, day by day.”

She also sees providence in the strange and unlikely circumstances that led to her doctors catching the illness as early as they did. It started when she was hit while driving alone in her car on the night of Aug. 16. The other driver was not only drunk, he also fled the scene. Fortunately, there was a witness, and Ellie was able to take a picture of his license plate. He was eventually caught. It was while receiving chiropractic care and therapeutic massage that she first noticed the lump on her neck. Other symptoms followed, including skin rashes. Weeks of needle biopsies, ultrasounds, a contrast dye 38 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

CT scan, blood tests and, finally, a surgical biopsy, confirmed the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Now, Ellie begins the fight of her life, and she’s ready for it. “I have always been a positive person,” Ellie says. “I always like to see the bright things. I know there are going to be days I feel weak, but I’m a fighter. I’ll get through it.” Ahead are further scans and biopsies, to determine how far the cancer has advanced throughout her body and to test if it has spread to her bone marrow. The main course of treatment will be chemotherapy. Ellie says she has been talking to an older girl, who was also diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in high school (she’s now a student at Oregon State University). The OSU student has been an inspiration to Ellie, and she says she wants to do that for others. “Something that’s helping me not be scared is that I get to inspire the people around me,” she

“I’m surprised, but then again, I’m not surprised,” Oliver said when asked about the amazing turnout and generosity. “This is just kind of how Canby rolls.” Donations were tax deductible through the support of the local nonprofit. Ryan Oliver said he has been friends with Ellie’s dad, Shane, since childhood, and when he heard about her diagnosis, he wanted to do whatever he could to help. Obviously, the same was true of, well, pretty much everyone else in town. “This is what we’re used to here in Canby,” Oliver says. “It’s how we grew up. It’s what our parents used to do. We just want to pay it forward.” Other organizers included Kerrie Oliver, Loren and Jen Bell, Tim and Becca Austen, R.J. Larios, Gina Hosford, and Backstop owners Ken and Lori Arrigotti, who also donated the proceeds from food and drink sales that night to the cause. says. “When I get chemo, I hope I can inspire the other kids, younger than me, older than me. Whoever’s in there, I just hope that I can be the light in that room.”

Since Ellie was first diagnosed, her team, school and pretty much the entire community of Canby has rallied around her and her family. Support for the Shorters has come from the sale of hundreds of #EllieStrong T-shirts, sweatshirts and stickers; a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $15,000; a hugely successful soccer clinic for local girls that was held in October at Canby High; the Taste of the Season Food & Beverage Show at Cutsforth’s on Nov. 7; and…I’m sure I’m forgetting a few others. A Cornhole for Cancer event on Nov. 2 drew hundreds into the Antonia Ballroom above the Backstop Bar & Grill. Almost fifty two-person teams registered for the tournament, which also featured a silent auction, with the big ticket items being a dozen or so sets of cornhole boards that were designed and donated by local businesses. A University of Oregon set alone went for over three grand (Go, Ducks!) One of the organizers, Ryan Oliver, reported that, all told, the event raised an estimated $30,000 for the Shorter family. Dr. Erin Walker “Smoking piles of incense and clusters of dried herbs hanging from the ceiling. Wood shelves lined with tiny bottles of essential oils and glass jars full of acupuncture needles. Thick, dark tapestries, ancient scrolls of mysterious knowledge and bead curtains. Lots and lots of bead curtains.” These are some of the misconceived images Dr. Erin Walker, of the Canby Clinic, said the term “naturopathic medicine” may bring to mind. And...no. It’s not like that. (Sorry to disappoint.) “In the state of Oregon, naturopathic physicians are primary care providers,” Dr. Walker explained. “So, I’m licensed and practice as a primary care provider.” Dr. Walker said naturopathic doctors, or NDs, share a set of foundational tenets similar to those of traditional medicine, including the familiar preset “First, do no harm.” In naturopathic terms, this also tends to mean favoring the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies. But they also follow some principals that are more unique to naturopathic medicine, including docere, or “doctor as teacher.” “That means that naturopathic physicians take time to educate patients on their basic physiology and biochemistry, explaining why they have the symptoms that they have, how the body heals, what a healing therapy is vs. a palliative therapy, and so on,” she said. “So, there’s a lot of instruction and teaching that I do with patients, helping them get to know their bodies.” She said another core principle of naturopathic medicine 40 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

is to identify and treat the root causes of patient’s ailments, rather than focusing on the symptoms. “We’re very much detectives,” she said. “We like to find the cause of the disease or disease state. We do a lot of investigating to find the cause, when we can.” Dr. Walker first discovered natural medicine while working with her aunt, a chiropractor in Minnesota. She says she knew “instantly” that natural medicine was her calling. She moved to Portland to attend the National College of Natural Medicine, earning her doctorate in 2007. She completed her residency at Salem Naturopathic Clinic in 2009. As the Canby Clinic looks forward to celebrating its 10th anniversary in June, they continue to adapt to serve their patients as best they can in an ever-changing medical and economic environment. The First Responder Fund The annual Canby Rotary fundraising dinner and auction was held at Willamette Valley Country Club on September 21. There were about 150 people who gathered on a pleasant late summer evening to share a "Wild West Rotary Roundup". Each year Canby Rotary Club members select a project or organization to support by giving volunteer time and funds. In recent years the Canby Rotary made significant contributions to the renovation of the kitchen and restrooms at The Canby Center and to the Suicide Prevention Task Force project to prevent youth suicide. This year, $15,000 was donated from the fundraiser to the Dr. Richard Davies First Responder Fund dedicated to "Caring for our neighbors in times of crisis". This local nonprofit organization is named for the highly respected Dr. Richard Davies who was the director of Emergency Medical Services in Canby for 38 years. The fund was established to ensure that Canby police, fire, EMTs, and The Canby Center have the resources to assist people with needs incurred during an emergency. Many of our neighbors have received help after a home fire, home break in, vehicle accident, or other potentially devastating emergency. The Rotary Club of Canby has made a commitment to developing and supporting programs that deliver results over the past 40 years. In addition, funds raised will support other service projects including youth literacy, education, vocational, and athletic programs in Canby and Aurora.

ROTARIAN KEITH GALITZ Canby Rotarian Keith Galitz is an attorney whose career spans nearly 50 years focused in the telecommunications industry. Keith was President and CEO of Canby Telcom (now known as DirectLink) from 2004 to 2013. Keith has a strong commitment to the mission of Rotary and is an energetic community leader. He is the Chair of the Clackamas Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, Board Member for CHS Solutions, and a Trustee of George Fox University. Keith was President of the Rotary Club of Canby in 2010-2011. His 15 years of service as a Rotarian includes enthusiastic volunteer work raising funds for scholarships for local high school students, as a Clackamas County fair gate greeter, Canby High School mock job interviewer, the Reading Rotarians literacy project, Nothing-But-Net basketball tournament, Lee Elementary School library books, The Canby Center kitchen renovation, and many other community projects. He is well known as a dependable, self-confident leader who has a servant's heart and willingness to go the extra mile to make a difference. Keith's many years of outstanding professional and volunteer service earned him the 2019 individual Spirit of Rotary Award. Congratulations, Keith!

Hot Cocoa Popcorn Balls These are great for gift baskets or stocking stuffers, plus they're kid-friendly to make! • 12 cups Popped Popcorn • 1/4 cup of butter or margarine • 4 cups of mini marshmallows • 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips • 1 packet of hot cocoa mix extra mini marshmallows (optional) On low heat, melt the butter in a medium saucepan, then add 4 cups of mini marshmallows. Stir consistently until the marshmallows are completely melted. When marshmallows have melted, add the cocoa mix. Keep stirring until the cocoa has dissolved into the marshmallow mix. Place the popcorn in a large bowl and pour the marshmallow mixture on top, then mix together until all the popcorn is coated. Then stir in the chocolate chips and extra marshmallows. Form the mixture into balls approximately 3 inches in diameter (you may want to coat your hands with oil or cooking spray to prevent sticking). Squeeze tightly, so the ball doesn't fall apart. Let cool completely on a parchment lined surface. Serve and enjoy! *These can also be made into festive colors by omitting the cocoa and chocolate chips and instead adding food coloring into the marshmallow mix. Next year will see our Leadership program coming to life. It is called, “6 Sessions, 3 Trainers, 1 Topic…Leadership” and promises to help keep your New Year’s resolution of developing yourself and your business on track. Get a chance to examine the topic of leadership with three different professional trainers and advance your skills. Our new Canby Employment Expo is also coming together and looking to be a fantastic partnership with local schools, local employers, community organizations, and more. We are looking to showcase all of the living wage jobs, new worker opportunities, and seasonal employment available right here in our community. NEW BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

WAY WARD SANDWICHES by Tyler Francke Owner Matt Morrissey says the name and concept for Wayward Sandwiches, the new combination sandwich shop and wine bar now open downtown Canby, emerged out of the jokey idea of the restaurant being a “home for lost sandwiches.” The concept has come a long way since then, with a core philosophy that includes a steadfast commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and making food from scratch that is delicious and gourmet-quality while also being accessible and non-pretentious, but the name stuck. Despite its tagline, Wayward Sandwiches indeed has a home — in the approximately 2,300-square-foot, first floor commercial space located on the west end of the Dahlia building.

Rouse free rein to produce the shop’s signature menu of meats, which they source locally and smoke in-house. The menu offers house sandwiches — basically their unique takes on the classics, like a Romanian pastrami Reuben or a Cajun chicken club — or you can make your own. They have soups and salads as well, as well as house-made fries and potato chips that are already becoming famous. For those that think sandwiches go better with beer, Wayward also has a selection of craft brews, both bottled and on tap. The look and feel of the place is modern, with minimalist influences. Their unique counter features reclaimed wood, with an epoxy countertop that features river rock as well as a few of their favorite characters from nearby Bricks & Minifigs.

Morrissey is a West Linn resident and first-time restaurant owner, though he has over two decades of experience in the hospitality industry, including managing the Veritable Quandary, one of the most well-known and beloved restaurants in Portland until it closed two years ago.

The furniture and all of the shop’s furnishings were designed and built by Hayes & Sons, the local custombuild furniture shop.

Another central part of the vision for Wayward Sandwiches — and its early success — is Justin Rouse, executive chef and assistant general manager. Rouse is also a former VQ employee. It’s where the two met and became friends.

“I think that Canby is a very attractive community that does a great job of balancing a small town feel with a city-sized population,” Morrissey explained. Then, he thought for a m i nute, a nd added, “And I think Canby could use delicious sandwiches.”

Morrissey has taken on the responsibility of carefully and thoughtfully curating the shop’s wine selection — a growing list that he plans to eventually encompass around 100 labels. READING MENTORS by Tyler Francke Do you want to make a positive impact on local kids and the Canby community, but don’t feel like you have enough time for volunteering?

grade, which educators know is a critical time to engage students in developing them as readers and learners.

Well, with The Canby Center’s Reading Mentors program, you can make a lifetime difference in only one hour a week!

According to the 2018-19 Oregon Department of Education data, only 47 percent of third-grade students in Canby School District meet or exceed grade level expectations.

Begun as a pilot program at Knight Elementary School in the fall of 2016, Reading Mentors developed out of a partnership between The Canby Center and the Canby School District. The program now serves all six elementary schools in Canby.

The program is simple: Mentors spend an hour each week reading one-on-one with students (half-hour with each), talking with them and reading with them. The idea is to take a relationship-based approach to help inspire a love of learning.

Then we send ‘em back to class, ready to learn!” Reading Mentors is not an academic intervention — the volunteers are not trained to tutor the students or evaluate their progress. But they often do, in fact, see academic growth as a result from the positive connections between a student and their mentor. Numerous studies show that engaged students are more likely to persist through academic struggles, earn higher standardized test scores, have better social skills and are less likely to drop out of school. “It’s a remarkable program,” Canby Superintendent Trip Goodall said during a recent visit to a Reading Mentors session at Trost Elementary School. “When you see the relationships that have been established, and the smiles on the children’s faces, I just can’t say enough about it. It’s remarkable.” Student engagement is key: According to a spring 2019 survey given to teachers with Reading Mentors students: 90 percent said that their kids were more engaged in listening to a story than they were at the beginning of the school year and 85 percent reported that their students were more enthusiastic about reading.

“We love the program,” said Andy McKean, principal of Eccles Elementary School. “We’re very appreciative. The volunteers have been wonderful, for them to come in and give their time so consistently with our kids. It’s just been great. We’re hoping we can keep this partnership for years to come.” Christine Taylor, principal of Knight Elementary, said it’s not only the students who appreciate the program; teachers love it, too. “Our teachers appreciate them so much, because they’re so committed, and they really just bring a little something extra to our school,” she said. “It builds our culture, and we love having them.” Angie Navarro, principal of Trost Elementary, said the Mentors are able to provide a gift of time that teachers often can’t. “We have 50 staff members and 420 kids,” she said. “So, our students really don’t ever get even 30 minutes of oneon-one time with an adult. The Reading Mentor program really gives them a little bit of extra time that kids can have for someone to listen to them, read to them, get to know them and help them grow.” More than 300 students have participated in the program over the past three years, with volunteers contributing more than 4,400 hours of service. The Reading Mentors program is currently looking for new volunteers to join their team for the current school year.
