I

am excited to be able to bring you a taste of what is going on in Canby or even what may be coming up in our great city. What I have to start with is some perspective on what Canby needs. What Does Canby Need? According to some Canby third graders they think we need a few things that will make Canby a better city. I recently had the honor of visiting with two third grade classes at Trost Elementary, who shared their thoughts on what Canby needs and how it would benefit the city. As part of a class section on their local city, their teacher, Ms. Bonner, broke the students into groups that shared similar ideas on what would make Canby better. The students then researched their idea - how big would it need to be, how much would it cost, why would it be a benefit to Canby, and where would it be placed. Once their research was completed, they created a presentation using their tablets with slides, pictures, and financial figures.

Trost Elementary

My son’s group decided that Canby needs another restaurant, Red Robin to be specific. Based on the research they determined that the cost to build one would be about $100,000. The reasons for wanting a Red Robin restaurant was that it has good food, it will encourage people to come eat in Canby, and that we do not have many sit down restaurants. I was pleased to tell them that there may be a couple new restaurants coming to Canby, though probably not a Red Robin. Two groups highlighted the want for large sports complex that included baseball and softball fields, indoor basketball courts and soccer fields, oh and of course a water feature/splash pad. Other ideas that were put forth by these future city planners were affordable housing, an ice skating rink, a water park with 10-12 large water slides that could be built at Legacy Park; and a community college so that Canby kids can continue their education. I was thoroughly impressed with each group’s ideas and presentation. I definitely see several future city planners and leaders in these groups.

Until the next edition. All my best, Mayor Brian Hodson

Brian Hodson is serving his third term as Mayor of Canby. He is the Co-Chair to the Clackamas County Coordinating Committee, Advisory Board of the Area Commission on Transportation, Clackamas County Housing Committee, and member of the Metro Mayor’s Consortium. Prior to being Mayor, he served 2 years on the city council, President of the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce for two terms. His day job is as a mortgage advisor with New American Funding.

CAR CARE CORNER

On The Road

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Why is a Wheel Alignment Important? Your car’s manufacturer specifies carefully calculated adjustments and precise settings for wheel alignment that will reward you with maximum vehicle performance, optimum driving enjoyment, and cost savings. Improper wheel alignment will result in difficult handling, greatly accelerated tire wear, poor fuel economy, and excessive wear on your car’s suspension system. Steering or handling problems may include off-center steering wheel, steering pull, unsteady steering, loose steering, or hard steering. You may also notice a change in steering direction after hitting bumps. Unusual or accelerated tire wear may take the form of edge wear, diagonal wear, or cupping wear that, if left unattended, will require premature tire replacement. Failing to maintain proper wheel alignment will make it impossible to maintain factory specified suspension setting that control the quality of your ride. Bumping a curb or hitting a pot hole could have adverse affects on your alignment. Protect your investment in your vehicle by keeping your wheels properly aligned. If you have new tires installed or worn suspension parts replaced, be sure to have these repairs accompanied by a wheel alignment. Also, allow us to check your wheel alignment when you bring in your vehicle for routine annual maintenance. Remember, proper wheel alignment will optimize your vehicle’s ride, handling, and steering capabilities, as well as making your car safer and easier to drive. What’s more, it will save you money by significantly extending the life of your tires and suspension! We suggest having an alignment done at least once a year.

How's Your Vehicle Getting Along

S

ummer’s heat, dust, and stop-and-go traffic, will take their toll on your vehicle. Add the effects of last winter, and you could be poised for a breakdown. You can lessen the odds of mechanical failure through periodic maintenance...Your vehicle should last longer and command a higher resale price, too! Some of the following tips are easy to do; others require a skilled auto technician.

Air Conditioning

A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the system examined by a qualified technician. Newer models have cabin air filters that clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system. Check your owner’s manual for location and replacement interval.

Cooling System

The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has

thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.

Oil

Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual more often (every 3,000 miles) if you make frequent short jaunts, extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer.

Engine Performance

Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended more often in dusty conditions. Get engine drive-ability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good shop.

Windshield Wipers

A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and get plenty of windshield washer solvent.

Lights

Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean dirt and insects from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

With

g This Summer Tires

Brakes

Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer

Battery

Batteries can fail any time of year. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly.Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Emergencies

Carry some basic tools — ask a technician for suggestions. Also include a first aid kit, flares, and a flashlight.

Have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles. Check tire pressures once a month; check them while they’re cold before driving for any distance. Don’t forget to check your spare as well and be sure the jack is in good condition. Examine tires for tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there’s uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side.

MINI FISH TACOS WITH MANGO HABANERO SALSA

G

round beef tacos were one of the first meals that I ever learned to cook by myself and for that reason they’ll always be a favorite. Thankfully for my fiancé, I’ve expanded on my cooking skills since the days of being a single, eighteen year old, eating nothing but spaghetti, tacos, and ramen! My mango habanero salsa is always a crowd favorite when I make it and I thought it would pair perfectly with some fresh tilapia. I picked up some mini white corn tortillas and threw it all together to bring you a delicious and easy meal that even an 18 year old Tattooed Martha could pull off!

By Tattooed Martha

Tattooed Martha is a lifestyle, recipe, and DIY blog dedicated to the pursuit of following your passions and making some messes along the way!

…............................................................ 2 Tbs olive oil + 2 more tablespoons for cooking 2 Tbs soy sauce Juice from 1 lime 2 fresh tilapia fillets (you can also use frozen, just make sure they’re defrosted) ¼ tsp paprika 6 mini white corn tortillas Red cabbage, shredded Shredded cheese (optional)

FOR MANGO SALSA: 1 mango, peeled, pitted, and diced into small cubes 2/3 cup fresh pineapple chunks, cut into small cubes 1 habanero pepper, finely chopped ¼ cup finely chopped red onion ¼ cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped Juice from 1 lime You can also add avocado chunks, but I left it out this time

MAKES 6 SERVINGS

Cover a baking sheet or dish with foil and combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil, soy sauce, and lime juice in the dish. Add tilapia fillets and flip to coat in marinade. Sprinkle top sides with paprika and place in the refrigerator to marinate for 20 minutes. While waiting on the tilapia, combine mango, pineapple, habanero, red onion, cilantro, and lime juice in a medium bowl. Toss until ingredients are mixed together. When tilapia is finished marinating, heat remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add tilapia fillets and cook for 2-3 minutes on one side or until you have a light brown sear around the edges. Flip and cook another 2-3 minutes on the other side. Reduce heat slightly to finish cooking thoroughly for another 4-5 minutes. Fish should be flakey, yet still tender and no longer transparent in the center. Transfer to a plate and break up into bite-sized pieces. Heat tortillas in the microwave or on a low setting in the oven. Add tilapia, shredded cabbage, and a few spoonful’s of the mango salsa (and any other toppings you desire). Serve right away.

The Millar’s Way.

3 Generations Meet Customer’s & Community Needs

W

hat a year… JFK narrowly defeats Richard Nixon for the Presidency. The U.S. enters the Vietnam War. The Soviets shoot down a U.S. spy plane. Cassius Clay (“Muhammad Ali”) wins gold at the Summer Olympics. Xerox introduces the first photocopier. Aluminum cans are used for the first time. Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” starts a new dance craze. The average cost of a new home is $12,700. Average monthly rent is only $98. A new car costs $2,600. A quarter buys you a gallon of gasoline. The year is 1960. That same year, Jim Millar opens Millar’s Hiway Tire Company, on 891 SE First in Canby. Nine years earlier, Jim met his wife, Betty, when he was stationed in England during the Korean War. Later that decade, Jim and

Betty had two children, Steve and Sue and 10 years later, another son Jim who currently is a technician at Millar’s Point S. The second generation of Millars would soon be working alongside dad. Later, Jim moved his tire store three blocks away. Then in 1964, Jim combined gas with tires, moving across Highway 99 to where the Chevron gas station is now, and called his new store “Hiway Tire Service and Flying A Service Station”. His son Steve started changing tires that same year, and pumping gas the following year. Steve remembered that he “had to have a job… fell into it naturally.” Regarding working for his dad, “He was always the boss and I knew that.” Steve added, “I learned the tire industry inside and out. We learned that you have to take extremely good care of your customers so that they’ll come back. Instill that in the staff.” Word-of -mouth brings customers from Salem and Portland. After a decade of selling tires and gas, Jim decides to eliminate serving gas. He moves Hiway Tire Service to its fourth location, 505 SE First. Jim’s staff added brake jobs and other auto service repairs. In 1973, the year before the move, Steve met his future wife, Candi, through friends. They married in 1975. Later in the 1970s, their family added a daughter, Trista, and a son, Ben. In 1979, Jim and Steve moved their tire store to its fifth and current location, at 1175 SE First. More changes would impact the family business in the ‘80s.

Two more changes were in store for the Millar family business. The first occurred during May of 2015. The Millar’s decided to jump in with Tire Factory’s decision as a group and join Point S as a co-op member. Ben’s reasoning, “To stay competitive with the Costco’s, Wal-Mart’s, etc. Point S is an international company. They have increased buying power with more stores…more visibility. Point S currently has 3,300 franchises in 27 countries.

Millar’s Hiway Tire Service added three service trucks for on-site service calls for large commercial trucks, such as 18 wheelers and farm tractors. Millar’s would become incorporated in 1985. One year later, the business name changed to the “Tire Factory”, as Jim and Steve joined a number of tire dealerships in the Portland area so as to buy tires for less. Toward the end of the decade, the second generation Millar would be taking over.

One year later in April, Ben took over ownership of the Millar’s Point S Tire and Auto Service store. Why did Steve sell the family store to son Ben? “My wife wanted me to retire!” Steve likes to hunt and fish. Today, Steve is building a new plane from a kit. “Keeps me busy”, he adds. Steve and Candi like to travel in their motor home to Arizona each winter, and ride their ATV’s. Both parents believe Ben is the right person to own the family business. Steve confidently points out, “Ben is really a

Steve remembers that his dad was retiring. The decision to buy Jim out was a simple one. “I really, really enjoyed how the suppliers and dealers helped each other out…not cutthroat. Each day is different.” In 1988, Steve and a partner bought Jim out. Three years later, a third generation Millar began showing up for work. Ben Millar started changing tires part time for his dad in 1991. “Ben needed to have a job and it was a logical choice for him to start at the shop”. By 1997, Ben asked to work full-time. “We tried to get him to go to college, but he didn’t want to. He liked

Lane Duff & Justin Barnhart

good fit for that store and doing a great job running that store.” Candi adds, “We feel fortunate that we have Ben to take it over and confident in his expertise in what he’s doing.” Their daughter Trista and her husband Brandon, own and operate a local plumbing business, “B. Ayers Plumbing”.

Justin Pope & Evan Kreiner

the store.” Two years later, Steve added service calls to Ben’s work load. “I trained him, along with the other experienced help.” For eight years, Ben’s focus was on-site service calls.

Steve says Ben hired about “half of the staff. They’re doing a great job.” Millar’s employs 20 to 22 people. Mutual loyalty and respect exists between Millar’s owners and the employees that work for them. From the sales staff, Kyle Carter manages the tire side of Millar’s and been with them for 17 years. Justin Saxe has worked for Millar’s 6 years. Ben’s wife, Kyle, started with Millar’s in 2016 and works part-time. Tire sales are the number one revenue source for Millar’s, with parts and labor in the auto service department at number two. Since Justin Saxe, service manager for the automotive

shop, was hired by Ben, auto service has grown 100 percent in the past three years. “I could see the potential that the shop had.” Justin continues, “It was well-established, family-run business, heavily involved in the community.” Having owned his own shop, Justin believes honesty and integrity is number one. He says, “You couldn’t ask for better customers. Canby is a great community!” As for his future goals, Justin responds, “This is my final stepping stone…using what I have to bring the shop to another level. And we have.” Justin plans to retire at Millar’s. “Great place to work.” Ben says, “Our specialty is diagnosis and repair for newer model passenger vehicles and light trucks.” Dan Kuehn, the service advisor, was brought in to help out in sales. Millar’s upped their advertising budget. They revamped how they scheduled work. Customers were asked to bring their vehicle to Millar’s and drop it off. Ben and Justin believe this allows Millar’s to take more cars in and help more customers. The longest tenured shop employee with Millar’s is tire technician manager, Jorge “George” Briseno. Getting his start at Millar’s 20 years ago, Jorge makes sure the customers’ work is done right. Because Jorge is bilingual, he assists with Spanish-speaking customers. Jorge says, “They (Millar’s) are

good people to work for…family business…take good care of customers…treat them right. I see a lot of people coming back in here again and again, because we provide good customer service.” Jorge adds that “Everybody gets along well…like a family. Good retirement program and paid time off. Hopefully, I will be here in 20 years!“ Abisai “Abi” Alvarez also found his first automotive job with Millar’s. He has been working with Millar’s tire customers for 12 years. Abi believes Millar’s is “A good place to work. I like what I do…good owners. My future plans are to keep working here.” Ben calculates that mechanics average 5 to 10 years of experience with Millar’s. Stan Copeland has been serving customers’ needs Jorge Briseno & Abi Alvarez at Millar’s for 14 years. Cory Reid works in the truck shop, and has been with Millar’s for 12 years. Millar’s auto repair techs are ASE Certified and the techs who work in the truck shop are TIA Certified. The employee with the most years at Millar’s is the office manager, Connie Moore. According to Ben and Justin, Connie is known as “The glue that holds it all together… the do-it-all

Dan Kuehn, Justin Saxe, Ben Millar, Bryan Kelley, Connie Moore

lady.” This September will mark Connie’s 21st anniversary with the company. Steve hired her, but she adds “Ben is great too.” Connie remembers telling her husband that “If they do that (unnecessary work), I won’t work there.” Connie found

Dan Kuehn, Jorge Briseno & Mara Ovchinikoff

Millar’s to be an “honest shop…customer-oriented…a lot of great customers… employees are great.” Connie plans on retiring with Millar’s. When discussing Millar’s focus on customer service, Steve knows, “It started with my dad, and it carried on. You can’t argue with success.” Ben adds, “We go above and beyond to keep them.” Millar’s loves Canby. Steve states, “We always felt that you have to give back to the community that supports you.” Ben

agrees. “Canby is a great town…a lot of great customers. I enjoy what I do…giving back to the community. We’re big supporters of youth sports…Clackamas County Fair Livestock Auction. We donate a lot of water to school events, jogathons, walkathons, Slice of Summer.” Millar’s is actively involved with the Canby Rotary, Canby Chamber of Commerce, and one of the sponsors for “Cruise by the Park” car show, the Canby Rodeo and the Three On Three basketball tournament. Like his dad, Ben’s hobbies are hunting and fishing. He and his wife Kyle enjoy watching daughter Kamryn play soccer, and son Gage play basketball and lacrosse. Kyle also plays golf and exercises. Ben’s last comment, “I would like to make it very clear how much we appreciate the people of Canby for the years of working together.” Canby proud.

TOP Summer Safety Tips 5 for Pet Parents

Hope you are having a nice summer! With the hot weather setting in, we wanted to remind folks that amidst the fun and games, pet health should be kept top of mind to help ensure a safe season for all. To keep dogs and cats out of harm’s way, the ASPCA has created a helpful infographic with the Top 5 Summer Dangers for Pets, including:

1 2

Loud noises like fireworks are one of the top reasons pets go missing, so secure your pet in an escape-proof place. If your pet does go missing, download the ASPCA app for a free step-by-step digital toolkit to help find your pet: www.ASPCAapp.org.

SUN & HEAT

High summer temperatures and bright days can mean dehydration, overheating, and scorched paws. Know the signs of overheating (excessive panting, increased heart rate, and weakness) and bring your pup indoors or to a cool, shady place.

3 4

FIREWORKS & THUNDERSTORMS

TOXIC CHEMICALS

Insecticides, citronella products, and glow sticks are toxic to pets. Keep your pet away from areas where chemicals have been sprayed and ensure dangerous products are out of reach.

PARTIES & BARBECUES If your pet’s joining the party, make sure guests don’t feed your pet human food (especially grapes, onions, avacado, and chocolate) and ensure alcoholic drinks are kept out of your pet’s reach.

5

HOT CARS

Even with the windows open an inch, a car’s temperature can reach over 100° in 10 minutes on an 85° day. One quick errand can turn dangerous in minutes, so leave your pet safely at home. Sign our Hot Car Pledge to help save lives this summer and all year long.

We Help Pets Live Happier & Healthier Lives! Pet Summer % 50 off Safety Tips: ADVANTAGE OFFER

• Never EVER leave pets in a parked car.
