Brain Health Made Easy

odern medicine has made tremendous advancements in protecting and repairing our aging bodies. New hips, knees, and even organs were once the realm of science fiction but have now become an amazing reality for many. There is, however, one organ that defies replacement. We are granted only one brain. It is up to us to guard it well. Fortunately, there are practical steps that we can take to nourish and protect our precious brain. Here are three excellent suggestions. Use it or lose it: According to a large study cited in WebMD, seniors who kept their minds active showed improved abilities in memory, reasoning and even speed of information processing as compared to those who didn’t. There are plenty of ways to keep an active brain, including learning a new language or musical instrument, taking adult education classes, or even playing card and board games. Hood River’s Community Ed program offers many engaging options for keeping your brain active. Control Inflammation: There are lots of natural remedies that can help with inflammation, but one of the most potent and most popular is curcumin, which is an extract from turmeric. The challenge with curcumin is that while it works well for reducing inflammation in most of the body, in its natural state it does not cross the blood brain barrier well, so it doesn’t help with protecting the brain. The longvida ® form of curcumin, found in NOW CurcuBrain, has been specially modified to cross this barrier. It has also been shown to have 65 times the bio-availability of standard curcumin and to reduce symptoms of depression. This is good news for keeping your brain young! The Calcium Connection: Most of us are aware that calcium is needed for healthy bones, but our nerves and muscles also use calcium, and since the brain is made up of nerves, so does our brain. The brain carefully regulates the use of calcium, which is needed for proper nerve function. Unfortunately too much calcium in the wrong place can damage nerve cells. To counteract this the brain uses a special calcium-binding protein to make sure that calcium levels remain safe. As we age, the brain produces less of this calcium-binding protein. Increasing the amount of this cell protecting protein can help prevent calcium overload in the brain. In 2008, a team of researchers won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on a calcium-binding protein derived from jellyfish! This protein has been found in university studies to reduce brain cell death by up to 50% and is found in Prevagen, a popular brain supplement available at Daniel’s Health & Nutrition.
