P
lato is quoted as having once said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” There is not a living soul on Earth who is not moved by music in one form or another, and while we all have favorite genres, music truly is universal in its ability to connect us. We can lose ourselves in its innate beauty, forget the things that divide us, and perhaps even find a common interest to unite around. Arguably, music is that powerful, and Tim Smither, owner and operator of Lake Music in Lake Oswego, is the perfect torchbearer to carry that message to the masses. Established in 1970 by Tim’s father, local music legend Sid Smither, Lake Music Center has been a part of the Lake Oswego music scene for decades. Sid initially trained to be an opera singer but due to unfortunate health issues was forced to quit singing. Unwavering, he continued to forge ahead and decided to open the music center in order to teach and share his musical gifts with the community. Sid sadly passed away in 2013, and the baton was passed to Tim. He stepped in as an administrator, managing things on the side while maintaining his then full-time job as a competitive tennis teaching pro. Over the years, though, he dug further into the nuts and bolts of the center and learned where he could inject additional funds and focus to improve the business.

Thanks to Sid’s influence, Tim already had the musical chops necessary to continue the legacy. Growing up he not only learned from his father, but also took lessons from prominent local musicians and played in a multitude of bands. He literally has a whole lifetime of experience and knowledge in the industry. That skillset, combined with his passion for music and desire to honor his father’s memory, has brought him to his current endeavor. He’s taken it upon himself to not only carry on running the business in honor of his father, but to attempt to revitalize it. This led him to rebrand as simply Lake Music, and he’s got some exciting new opportunities for local musicians and students. This is the place to go for music lessons, instrument rentals, retail music items (including instruments and accessories), instructional books, and in the near future they will also have a recording studio to be used by students and recording artists alike! Lake Music really is the only name in the area you need to know about when it comes to all your musical needs. To top it all off, they’re offering 15% off the first month of lessons if you mention this article and provide the coupon! During COVID, things have obviously been a challenge, but Tim wants to make sure everyone knows that Lake Music is open and serving the community they so love. Lessons are primarily taking place on-line
via Zoom, but they are slowly and carefully starting to do some inperson lessons as well. The best bet is to contact them to discuss the options. Tim is very concerned with ensuring everyone’s wellbeing, so he is only allowing in-person lessons if both the instructors and students agree to it. On the positive side of things, quarantine is the perfect time to learn a new instrument! Ask yourself, once we’re past all of this, would you prefer to have accomplished something significant, like learning an instrument, or to have simply binge-watched endless hours of Netflix with nothing to show for it? It’s the perfect opportunity to take that step and do the thing you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t work into your (previously) busy schedule. If that isn’t enough inspiration, there’s always Lake Music’s new motto: Learn. Love. Play. Local. Those are the words on the new van Tim just purchased for the business and that’s what they are all about. Learn about life and about yourself while figuring out how to play an instrument. Love yourself, your neighbor, and the world through music. Play without inhibition, and make the time to enjoy life. And keep it local; you’ve got the perfect place right here in town to do all of that! Having a teacher and mentor is imperative when it comes to sticking with it through the learning process, and Tim has taken great care to employ the best instructors available to you. They are teachers first, and musicians second, which really is ideal! There’s lots of great
musicians out there who know how to play, but don’t know how to help someone else learn. Tim understands that not every teacher is effective, and he’s prioritized hiring those who are, so you can have the best learning experience possible. Tim has endless enthusiasm for his business and community and he wants, perhaps more than anything else, for people to feel like this is a place where all are welcome. It’s a thread in the fabric of this wonderful community, and he is constantly and actively searching for ways to interact with and give back. There aren’t a lot of people like Tim Smither around.
