ucetta Elmer had her eye on Union Block Coffee ever since she first started visiting as a customer more than a decade ago, when she and her husband owned another business in downtown McMinnville.

They contacted the owner, who was then with K&F Coffee Roasters in Portland. “We introduced ourselves and let him know we were interested in his shop, and he said it wasn’t for sale,” Lucetta says. “We kept persisting. I’d just pop in and check on him and see how he was. It took me about three years, and he finally said, “You know, I think you guys really want it!” That’s how it happened. The Elmers are now celebrating ten years of Union Block Coffee ownership and are proud to host both regular patrons and tourists at the city’s most centrally-located coffee shop. The interior is light and modern, with floorto-ceiling windows that afford customers a perfect view for people-watching as they sip their brew. There’s plenty of amazing artwork to check out as well. The alley behind the building features a mural of a woman with a parasol and bouquet by Ashley Phillips. Inside, there’s another mural over the check-out counter by Natalie Fletcher, and the brick wall on the east side features a wood carving of Oregon designed by Lucetta’s husband Denny. When the Elmers took over Union Block (UB), they decided to stick with K&F Roasters to provide their coffee,

which is a third-generation family-owned company dedicated to organic, fair trade coffee. “I like that they have someone who actually visits the fields in South America to make sure things are as they should be, as well as what was being paid for the coffee,” says Lucetta. They get a variety of roasts, from the mild house brand to the more exotic varieties, including an espresso that’s a perfect balance of acidity and boldness. “It’s all in the roast,” she added. “When we hire baristas, another great thing about K&F is that they welcome them to Portland to tour the facility to see how the coffee is roasted. They have a lab with the exact same espresso machine as we do.” It’s local collaboration at its very best, and that collaboration really pays off in the tasty drinks they serve at UB. Whether you’re an espresso connoisseur or you want something sweet and creamy, you’re sure to find the perfect treat to tempt your palate.

Some of their tantalizing options include the Avalanche, featuring white chocolate and caramel, the Fighting Irish, with Mexican chocolate and Irish Cream, and the Kahlua, with coffee liqueur, creme de cocoa, and vanilla. Each one is absolutely delicious! Not a coffee person? Not to worry, UB has plenty of other options as well. From tea and hot chocolate to steamers, creamosa, smoothies, and even blended lemonade, there are great options for everyone and every craving. In the true spirit of a family business, all four of the Elmer children have worked there through the years. If you’ve not been by lately, you’ll want to visit soon to check out the remodel. There’s a fresh coat of paint, new floors, and new seating, and the whole place is lighter and brighter. You’ll still find outdoor sidewalk seating, and best of all, there’s now a terrific selection of breakfasts and desserts. If you’re stopping by for your morning pick-me-up, be sure to get a bagel, some oatmeal, or their awesome peanut butter and banana toast to go with your jolt of caffeine. If it’s lunchtime they’ve got you covered with scrumptious avocado toast, pepperoni calzone, or savory biscuits. And if you have a sweet tooth, you can’t go wrong with their amazing chocolate cake, cheesecake, scones, or the delectable waffle sandwiches, which come with toppings like fruit, chocolate, peanut butter, caramel, and even ice cream!

At UB, the effort to keep it local is also first and foremost when it comes to their food. “We make all of our waffles in-house,” Lucetta says. “The cake we get from Bad Dog - in my opinion, it’s the best chocolate cake out there. Our cheesecakes come from Gerry Franks [in Salem].” As if all that were not enough, you also won’t find a better customer service experience anywhere else. “We always say we want customers to leave happier than when they entered, and that’s not hard in a coffee shop,” Lucetta says. “Probably the most consistent comment I hear from customers is that they just love the vibe, they feel it when they walk in and they enjoy it. That’s something we work on. It’s the best spot in town!” The Elmers and UB are proud supporters of the McMinnville community, regularly participating in local events and helping sponsor the MHS Grad Night. YAMHILL COMMUNITY ACTION PARTNERSHIP

ot that any proof was needed, but there’s nothing quite like a pandemic to show how resilient, experienced and necessary the Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP) is as a resource for the area’s less fortunate in times of crisis. YCAP was founded in 1980 as part of a national network of locally-controlled social service agencies designed to help improve the lives of lowincome people and strengthen communities. The non-profit is based in McMinnville, but serves all residents of Yamhill County in four primary service categories: housing, energy, food assistance, and youth services. Development Director Laverne Pitts notes that in January of last year YCAP marked 40 years of service. No one then had any idea what 2020 would bring, but when COVID-19 hit just a few months later, the agency was among the first and fastest to act locally. “We’re always available,” Laverne says. “We have both the experience of a 40-year-old agency, and the flexibility of a non-profit.” YCAP is most active during November and December when they assist in building up the local food bank for holiday food baskets. During 2020, however, they kept busy all year. As housing became a problem for many suffering from shutdowns, YCAP quickly drew on its many partnerships to make emergency housing available through a local motel. The agency was also responsible for distributing $1.4 million in rent relief and is also charged with getting close to $1 million

in energy assistance to families in need. According to Laverne, the motel project has been particularly successful. About 66 percent of homeless residents who used the services have had positive exits into permanent housing and/or treatment programs. “We were really pleased with how all the partnerships came together for that project,” she says. “It really was a collaborative effort to get that program started in March, because the state and federal funding hadn’t come through yet.” YCAP continues to make many of these services available, whether they are needed because of Covid-19 or otherwise. We will probably never know just how far the ripples of this program have reached, and we may never truly comprehend all the good they have done for our local communities! ason Thompson started his work for Budget Blinds of McMinnville in 2009, installing high quality window coverings for clients throughout Yamhill County and the surrounding areas. In 2013, he bought the store and now runs it with a highly experienced and dedicated crew of five.

More than a decade after getting into the window covering business, he still loves seeing new products come down the line and sharing them with his clients. “I enjoy seeing the results of a job, and customers happy and excited,” Jason says. Some window blind dealers rely only on one vendor and have a limited selection, but Budget Blinds of McMinnville works with a variety of vendors to offer everything from standard shades and blinds to shutters, motorized shades, honeycomb, and drapes. Their enormous selection allows them to accommodate nearly any style and budget. It’s such a large selection and variety, Jason notes, that it’s not even possible to have them all on display in the showroom. Ever cognizant of industry trends, Jason and his team have noted that in the past year homeowners preferences have definitely shifted, as they find themselves staying at home more than in the past.
