MUCHAS GRACIAS

MEXICAN FOOD

MADE-FROM-SCRATCH Written By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer | Photos By Kara Langley Photography

B

elieve it or not, some of the best Mexican Food in Oregon and Washington can be found right here in Newberg. If you haven’t been to Muchas Gracias yet, you’ll want to get there asap! The freshness and flavor of their food will not only leave you wanting more, but you will swear it was cooked from scratch in your dear abuela’s kitchen. While it is technically considered fast food, they make it their mission to provide you with anything but a fast food experience. That is to say, they serve your food quickly, but every single item is made fresh and delivered with style and a smile. Looking for something new on that late night drive home? Look no further than Muchas Gracias! As owner, operator and manager, Mayra Campos has been serving Newberg from her current location since 2014. For anyone familiar with the franchise before then, you may have gone by one day and scratched your head in confusion; Mayra actually purchased the restaurant from the previous owner and simultaneously moved out of the building it was in, and into the one next door. The original building had a lot of unnecessary unused space, so downsizing and focusing more primarily on the drive-thru aspect of the business was a key part of their strategy. Mayra actually began her relationship with Muchas Gracias working at the McMinnville location in high school. She continued in the food service industry after that, gathering years of experience and expertise at other restaurants. As it turns out, when she met the man who became her husband, she discovered he had also worked for Muchas Gracias in high school, but he’d never left. Ultimately, it was his idea to buy their own franchise location, and in November of 2014, they held their grand opening.

What attracted her so much to the franchise opportunity (besides the fact that her husband was still with the company), was that Muchas Gracias was no ordinary fast food restaurant. Nearly every item was made from scratch using fresh ingredients. None of the pre-packaged, pre-cooked, reheated in the microwave junk you’ll get at other drive thru places. Meats are all sliced, seasoned and cooked in-house. Tortilla chips are cut from whole tortillas and cooked in-house. Pico de gallo is made from fresh tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, all cleaned and prepped by hand. Guacamole is hand-made with real, fresh avocados, scooped and mixed by hand. Potatoes are hand-cut from whole russets and seasoned. Breakfast burritos, which are served all day and night, are made with real eggs. Mayra stated she cracks roughly 30 dozen eggs every day, and they grate their cheese fresh from a block! Not only does it taste noticeably better, but it’s also free of all those questionable additives used to keep it from clumping. The list goes on, but you get the point. Mayra and her husband work incredibly hard, prepping food for hours every day to make sure your dishes are as fresh, natural, and delicious as possible!

Although initially headquartered in California, the company later relocated to the Northwest and now all existing locations are in Oregon and Washington. We are so fortunate to have Muchas Gracias now based here in Oregon, and we are especially lucky to have a location right here in Newberg! In honor of calling Oregon home, their number 1 seller and customer favorite is their Oregon Burrito. Stuffed with diced round steak, potatoes, cheese, and pico de gallo, it’s a show stopper! Another favorite is their Gordito Burrito which is the burrito equivalent of an everything bagel. It’s loaded with your choice of meat, rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, lettuce, cheese, and red sauce. In the mood for breakfast? Their delicious and filling breakfast burrito will hit the spot! Don’t worry about what time it is - they’re served all day long. Just want a snack to munch on? Try the amazing Carne Asada Fries, which are like nachos but with fries or tots instead of tortilla chips. Finish it off with a hot order of churros and then wash it all down with a traditional, made-from-scratch, creamy horchata drink. It doesn’t get any better than that! They serve the full gamut of Mexican foods: tacos, enchiladas, combination meals, a wide selection of tortas (Mexican sandwiches), and more. All delicious, and since it’s made fresh to order, you can get what you want,

the way you want it! Currently, due to COVID, they are only open for drive thru, so keep that in mind, but once restrictions ease up, they will have a small dining room with 8 tables available. Until then, it’s the perfect place to grab a delicious meal while you’re out and about. Businesses like this one are rare; local and family owned by people who live in and sincerely care about your community. Over the years they’ve worked very closely with other businesses, and in particular with George Fox University during freshman orientation. The last time they were able to participate, they served over 300 free burritos and gave out boxes of Muchas Gracias t-shirts to welcome incoming students. Supporting local businesses means supporting your local economy, so come on down and grab some incredible food today! You won’t be sorry! Not hungry at the moment? Good thing they are open 24 hours, 7 days a week! Reading this article at 2:00am after a long night of studying and need a midnight snack? Carne Asada Fries are calling your name! If you’re looking for a delicious and fresh meal, served quickly, but prepped and cooked with the utmost care, look no further than Muchas Gracias.

Muchas Gracias is located at 2009 Portland Road in Newberg. Visit MuchasGraciasMexicanRestaurant.com for more information.

more fun, has more energy, or is more packed to the gills with amazing classic tunes and family-friendly entertainment than The Lugnuts. If you have heard them, you’ll know firsthand - they really are that good!

The group has been rocking and rolling in the Pacific Northwest since the late 70s, but they travel all over performing nationwide, from coast to coast. Jerry Hoffman, one of the 3 original founding members still in the group, is one of the friendliest guys you could ever meet. He also represents the core of what the band and show is all about - fantastic people, who are simply having a blast doing something they all love. Believe it or not, the whole thing actually started out as a gag! Back in ’78, when Jerry and some friends were working at Washington

Sports Drinks Linked To Tooth Damage Sipping on sports drinks can damage your teeth because of the high levels of acid in them, dentists have warned. Dental experts placed teeth in sports drinks and in water to compare the effects and found the citric acid in the sports drinks caused corrosion and could result in severe tooth damage if left untreated.

The results of the experiment were presented at the annual meeting of the International Association for Dental Research in Miami.

“This is the first time that the citric acid in sports drinks has been linked to erosive tooth wear,” said Dr Mark Wolff, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at the college, who led the study. The erosion on the half placed in the sports drink was clearly visible because dozens of tiny holes had appeared while there was no damage on the half which was immersed in water. Brushing teeth immediately after the drinks would compound the problem, Dr Wolff said, because the acid in the drink softens tooth enamel leaving it vulnerable to the the abrasive brushing with toothpaste. In another study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists found cutting out one serving of sugared soft drink led to weight loss of just over one pound after six months and 1lb 4oz after 18 months. Cutting out other drinks did not have the same effect, the researchers said. A spokesman for the British Soft Drinks Association said: “This study does not replicate real life as the teeth were studied outside of the mouth. A real-life study conducted by Ohio State University, which is the most comprehensive study to date, found that there is no relationship between the consumption of sports drinks and dental erosion. Anyone concerned about this issue should consult their dentist for advice on how to minimise the effects of dietary acids from all sources in the diet.” By Rebecca Smith, as posted on www.dentist.net

Cleaning Up Newberg One Home At A Time

NAOMI’S CLEANING

Written By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

here’s a hint of spring in the air, and for many people that means it’s time to clean house -- like, really clean it. But even though your home is aching for some quality time with a mop and scrub brush, you probably don’t want to. Why not let a professional do the job right?

Naomi Barnett started her cleaning service three years ago. A college student studying to be a paralegal, she figured, why not? She could make her own hours, be her own boss and work hard. “I never in a thousand years thought that it would turn into something like this,” she said. “I have so many people asking for my services.” Serving all of Yamhill County, Naomi and her team of professionals are available for all types of cleaning, at any level on any schedule for every budget. Weekly, biweekly or monthly cleans, move-in and move-out cleans (including apartments), and deep cleans. Did a roof leak lead to a pile of soggy insulation in your living room? Has a finished remodeling project left everything with a fine coating of dust? They can handle that, too. Deep cleans typically involve cleaning out cupboards, refrigerators, ovens, carpet cleaning, cleaning inside and outside trash bins as well as anything that is not visible to the naked eye. “No two houses are the same,” she says. “We start every relationship by providing a free walk through estimate so that we can get to know you and your home. During that time, we can answer any questions you have and create a tailored clean to your needs. We strive to make sure the same cleaner comes to your home every time so you can get to know them. My goal is to make sure you are as happy with your 50th clean as you were with your first.” If COVID-19 still has you on edge, fear not. Naomi makes every effort to keep clients safe. No one is allowed 18  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

to work if displaying any symptoms of illness. All equipment is sanitized between jobs, and the company uses CDC recommended disinfectant sprays (unless directed otherwise) composed of water and bleach on all frequently touched surfaces. Depending on comfort level, customers may remain in the home while the clean is taking place, although Naomi does ask that they stay in another room while the cleaner is at work. Or you can not be at home. The company uses all natural cleaning products, and Norwex products. Carpet cleanings are available. There’s a 2-hour minimum clean time, which (depending on the house) is about how long a regularly scheduled clean takes, although depending on how much work is involved, it can go as long as four. “I do apartments, condos, hotels, commercial buildings, and anything and everything else that needs cleaning,” she said. Naomi’s services will allow you to relax and enjoy your home rather than seeing all the chores that need to be done. You deserve a break, so save yourself some stress and give her a call today! You can learn more about Naomi’s cleaning services at www.Naomiscleaning.com. To schedule a service, call 530-251-7249. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF NEWBERG ROTARIANS: DOING GOOD AROUND THE GLOBE You may have noticed local Rotarians serving the community in various capacities and funding various community projects over the years. However, local Rotarians are not just serving Newberg, but also undertake efforts to do good globally. One such project currently underway is being spearheaded by a non-profit called Nepal Medics, which is led by the organization’s founder and Executive Director, Patrick Bancke. Patrick is a member of the Noon Rotary Club of Newberg and has an extensive background and expertise in rural Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Patrick and his non-profit have partnered with the Rotary Club of Newberg, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu, the World Health Organization, as well as with the Nepal Minister of Health’s office in an effort to bring critical, life saving improvements to Nepali EMS systems. The location of the project: the Dhading District of Nepal, home to 350,000 Nepali people. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015, killed more than 8,800 Nepali citizens. The earthquake was the most severe and visible event to impact Nepal—a country prone to droughts, floods, storms, avalanches, epidemics and ecological hazards.

While there are currently 1,370 trained Rural First Responders and 217 Rural Medical Responders in the Dhading District, there is no efficient way for villagers to contact responders for help. This project would open the first Emergency Medical Dispatch Center in rural Nepal. Nepali citizens Newberg Rotarian Patrick Bancke, Executive who have a medical Director of Nepal Medics emergency will call a toll free three-digit number that will connect them to the Dispatch Center located at the Dhading District Hospital. Nepal Medic’s work, then, consists of establishing a common phone number and medical dispatch system (parallel to the American 9-1-1 system); training over 1,000 community responders in disease prevention and intervention; and building a self-sustaining ambulance system that will eventually function independent of outside resources. This project will first be piloted in the mountainous Dhading District with hopes of sustainability and replication of the project in the remaining rural areas of Nepal. Nepal Medics is also proud of their role in the advancement of human rights, deliberately ensuring that approximately 57% of their trainees are women and working to combat discrimination through the empowerment of knowledge and self-sufficiency.

Typically, if there is a medical emergency, illness or accident outside the city, patients are carried to a local healer or loaded onto a passing truck. Because Nepal lacks an Emergency Medical Services framework, the majority of ambulances in the country are essentially akin to “jeep taxis” without equipment or basic operator training. Such vehicles are not suitable to provide pre-hospital For more information about the Project, about care—something the Nepali Government has made Nepal Medics, or ways to contribute, go to a priority. BUSINESS SHOWCASE

PAINTING THE TOWN Written By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

N

ow that spring has arrived, most of us here in the Northwest are beginning the gradual process of breaking from our indoor hibernatory habits, and venturing outdoors again. Our eyes adjust to the increased light, and as we stand on our front yard feeling the freshly sprouted blades of grass between our toes, things come into greater focus, and we begin to notice all the havoc wreaked on our homes from all that cold winter weather. Siding that has started to warp or split, paint that has chipped or faded. Especially as time goes on, year after year, those problems only get worse. It can become a threat to the integrity of the structure as much as it is an eyesore. We need someone we can trust who will fix all of that. We need JK Paint & Contracting, based out of Newberg. Joe Kelly is the owner, operator and founder of the company, and he keeps things straightforward in terms of their philosophy: treat each project as if it were our family’s own. That’s what they do every day with every project. Joe started this business in 2012 after years of

working as a professional painter for other people. He actually started painting as a summer job while he was in college, but loved it so much that he kept going back. Ultimately he realized this was no longer just a summer job. It was what he wanted to do for a living. Starting his own business was a leap of faith, but certainly one worth taking. Initially, it was just Joe and his good friend Carlos, chasing a dream. They literally went doorto-door soliciting business. His car door was inoperable and he had to roll down the window to open it. They had to borrow ladders and equipment for their early jobs, but from humble beginnings, they persevered, learned the ropes, and built up a reputation based on honesty, integrity, and superior work. When it comes to contracting, success runs parallel to the implementation of these basic principles. Joe is an honest, hard-working guy and he delivers on his promises. It’s all reflected in the core values of the business: be the friendliest and most honest painters around; use high quality paints and paint products; and be the easiest painting contractors to work with by providing clear and friendly communications and a detailed scope of work. This applies to his clients and his employees, most of whom have worked with him for many years. He has an eye for finding talented, hard-working, loyal people, and over the years, his crew has grown. Two sisters and a brother have also joined the team, but the whole crew are treated like family.

NEWBERG HISTORY

Feelin’ Good Vibrations In Newberg By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

oday, vinyl shop record stores are a retro thing, but many years ago (before streaming or iTunes were even thought of), record stores were where you went to find new music. With no internet for news about your favorite artists, these stores were one of the best places to see and hear what was happening in the music industry. In Newberg, the place to go was Good Vibrations Records & Tapes, owned and operated by a man named Steve Bates. Steve opened the shop back in 1983, the year that Kiss took off their trademark makeup and Michael Jackson released Thriller. Recorded music was a $3.6 billion industry at the time, and Steve made sure that Newberg had access to a plentiful supply of 28  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

all three formats: vinyl, cassette tapes, and the relatively new compact disc. In addition he also kept his store filled with music posters, magazines and band memorabilia. “I started it on my own, just for the fun of it,” Steve said, whose musical tastes ran from Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond to pop music’s harder edges, like Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. Tracy Dale, who attended Newberg High School at the time, remembers visiting the shop in the Springbrook Plaza while her parents shopped nearby. “I started talking to Steve about my newfound love of Boy George, Wham! and The Thompson Twins. He hated all of them, generally speaking,” she recalls, then corrects herself with a laugh: “He appreciated them, but wasn’t about to listen to them in the store.” Despite their differing musical tastes, Steve appreciated Tracy’s youthful perspective, so she went to work there through a Newberg High School program that offered credits for work experience. Matt Nelson, publisher of this magazine, knew the shop well too. “Back in the late 80s I was a student at Linfield College, and I would try to visit Good Vibrations every time I drove through Newberg,” he recollects. “I have always had a passion for recorded music, and now I have great memories of looking through record stores like Steve’s for hours at time.” Newberg Community Advantage Magazine  28

For years Good Vibrations lived on the bridge that connected the analog era to digital. “Thing was, they were phasing out albums at that time and trying to introduce CDs, but you had to have them all,” Steve says. His own preference, then and now, is vinyl. “I find it much better,” he explains. “It’s clearer, sharper. The thing is, if you get vinyl, play it once and record it on a cassette or blank CD, and then listen to the recording. It’s better. When you play it the first time, you get the purest sound.” Of course, the very best sound is live performance, and Steve has enjoyed his share of that, too. “I remember going to Portland and meeting Billy Idol. He was playing at the Pine Street Theater with about five hundred punk rockers and I got to meet him after the show. He was very nice, very polite.” In the late 1980s, Good Vibrations moved to a different location on Portland Road (where Newberg Tobacco and Cigarette is today). The building allowed him to have a stand alone store, better parking and improved visibility, and the store remained an icon in the city for several years to follow. However in 1992, just as Grunge was heating up and recorded music was a $9 billion industry, Steve decided it was time for a change of scenery. “I was always excited when I found a rare collectible or a hidden gem from an unknown artist,” Matt continues. “I’ve been collecting KISS memorabilia since 1984 and I would alway look to see what Steve had for sale. In 1989, I purchased a rare KISS poster from the shop, and I still have it to this day.” (See photo above) However, some of the things Matt had his eye on were just out of reach: “One thing that Steve had that I always wanted was a rare KISS 1976 US TOUR mirror. Apparently this was only given out to music industry folks and never for sale to the general public. I pestered Steve every time I went in to get him to sell me the mirror, but he never did.”

He closed the store and moved to Central Oregon, where he found a record store vinyl haven in Bend’s locally owned Ranch Records and became good friends with the owner. Steve is now retired and living in Washington, but he has a special place in his heart for our small city in Yamhill County. “I remember my days in Newberg fondly,” he recalls. “The city was great and there was always good music to listen to. Newberg has some of the nicest people you will ever meet.” And who could argue with that? Newberg Community Advantage Magazine  29

OF SEASONAL INTEREST

Written By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

However this ridiculous day got its start, it gained tremendous popularity during the 18th century throughout Britain and much of Europe, eventually finding its way to various countries around the world.

April Fools’ Day has actually been celebrated in some form for centuries and by many different cultures. The exact origins of the day are not entirely clear, but some speculate that it dates back to the 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar, the new year actually began on or around April first, so as to coincide with the Spring Equinox.

One of the craziest April Fools’ hoaxes of all time was that of the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest in 1957. On April first of that year, the respectable BBC news program Panorama announced that thanks to a mild winter and the elimination of a dreaded creature called the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were celebrating an enormous spaghetti harvest. They even showed footage of Swiss people pulling strands of spaghetti out of trees! The prank was so convincing that many British citizens called in wanting to know how they could get their own spaghetti tree.

ave you ever fallen victim to a crazy prank on the first of April? It’s happened to most of us at one point or another. Did you have to endure more cockamamie shenanigans yet again this year? Don’t feel bad if that’s the case; you’re not the only one. Here is the history behind the day that makes us want to run for cover each spring.

In changing to the Gregorian calendar, the new year moved to January first. Many people, however, were not immediately aware of the change and continued to celebrate in the last week of March leading up to April first. As is still the case today, mockery often follows when one is slow to discover new trends or information, so these poor folks became the butt of jokes and were known as “April Fools.” One particular prank was to put a paper fish on such a person’s back, symbolizing an easily caught fish or a gullible person. Another possible theory about the origins of April Fools’ Day ties it back to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, which is Latin for “joyful.” This celebration took place at the end of March and often involved people dressing up in costumes to disguise themselves, before going around and mocking other citizens and magistrates. Yet another idea is that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox (first day of Spring) in the Northern Hemisphere, and served as a metaphor of sorts for how the forces of nature trick people with their sudden changes at this time of year. 40  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Some pranks are more alarming than funny, though. On the morning of April first, 1974, the town of Sitka, Alaska awoke to find that clouds of black smoke were rising from the crater of Mount Edgecumbe, a long-time dormant volcano. Panic nearly set in, but thankfully it was discovered that a local practical joker, not an angry mother nature, was responsible for the ominous smoke. Porky Bickar was so committed to his April Fools’ stunt that he flew hundreds of old tires into the crater of the volcano and lit them on fire, which I’m sure all of us will agree was a terrible idea, joke or no. When Mount Saint Helens erupted six years later, one victim of his prank wrote Porky to tell him that this time he’d gone too far. Hopefully any pranks that you may or may not have fallen for this year were merely harmless and silly, but remember next year that when April first rolls around again, it’s wise to keep one eye open for tricksters like Porky. *info from history.com and hoaxes.org
