COWBOY COFFEE AT THE COFFEE BARN
Written By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer | Photos By Kara Langley Photography
A
ttention coffee connoisseurs of Newberg - we have news for you! We are excited to announce that the old Coffee Barn drive-thru on Everest Road is now under new ownership. For those of you who’ve been getting your coffee there for years, the even better news is that you’ll still see many of the same smiling faces when you pull up, and they still serve an amazing cup of joe! If for some reason you haven’t been to this local landmark yet, you’re going to want to hop in your car and head that way as soon as you finish reading this! Drew and Ty Delbridge (along with their mom and dad) are the new owners of Cowboy Coffee at the Coffee Barn, and we can all rest assured that our favorite old coffee hut couldn’t be in better hands. These folks are the epitome of what a family-owned business should look like. Their original Cowboy Coffee location opened in Molalla back in 2010 and the whole family pitched in to get it off the ground. They maintained a good business for the first 5 years or so, but it took some time before things took off at the pace they had hoped for. Then in 2015 things suddenly began to pick up, which Drew credits to the ingenuity, tenacity, and work ethic of his folks, who started introducing new products like Hawaiian Shave-Ice and ice cream. The business expanded to the point that they were able to open up some new locations, and finally this last summer they purchased the Coffee Barn here in Newberg. Being astute business owners, Drew and Ty understand how important local businesses are to the community, and they know that it’s not always wise to come in and make 6 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
drastic changes to a place that is close to people’s hearts. The Coffee Barn has been a beloved and constant presence in Newberg for over 20 years, and as the new owners, they absolutely want to respect that legacy. That said, they do have a set of high standards for their business, so they are finding ways to make gradual changes and improvements that they hope everyone will enjoy. First and foremost, you’ll notice that the exterior facade has not changed. The red barn color and look of the physical building already fit in perfectly with their Cowboy Coffee image, so besides some fresh paint and new signage, no other changes were needed. It still feels like you’re driving up to the same old Coffee Barn. The most significant and obvious changes are to the menu. They still serve all the usual drive-thru coffee hut standards, of course, including just about everything you may have ordered there before the change in ownership. They’ve also added some new and improved options, with a focus on quality ingredients and supporting local vendors whenever possible. Cowboy Coffee initially purchased all their beans locally from Stumptown, but unfortunately when Stumptown was purchased by a larger corporation they raised prices and
as making an effort to give back to the community that supports them, they hope that Cowboy Coffee and the Coffee Barn will continue to be a Newberg landmark for another 20 years and more! With the best coffee, smoothies and snacks served by the nicest people you’ll ever meet, what more could you want from your local coffee hut? These are the kinds of businesses that we want more of in our communities; the ones with a great product, local focus and sincere integrity. So the next time you are in need of your morning jolt, afternoon pick-me-up, or a tasty treat, skip the big chains and visit our good friends in the little red shack. Then pick up a punch card and go back again and again! lowered service standards, so the Delbridges decided to look elsewhere. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because otherwise they would never have discovered BJ’s Coffee Roasters (located in Vancouver), and they couldn’t be happier with the change. Everything about BJ’s and their business model aligns with the Cowboy Coffee values. All of the beans are Fair Trade Certified, and of particular note is their partnership with Café Feminino, a program that focuses on ethically sourcing coffee from impoverished female farmers around the world. This means that Cowboy Coffee is serving you a great product while simultaneously supporting philanthropic efforts where they are needed the most.
Cowboy Coffee at the Coffee Barn—the best coffee and snacks from the nicest people you’ll ever meet. These are the kinds of businesses that we want in our communities, folks! Real people, with sincere integrity who want nothing more than to maintain a successful business while they serve their friends and neighbors. Community-based and community-focused. Next time you are hankering for some caffeine, drive by the big box chains and visit our good friends in Newberg in the little red shack. Daily specials on a medium latte for only $3.25!
If you don’t care for coffee, don’t worry! They have plenty of other beverages to choose from, including hot tea, cocoa, Italian Sodas, Red Bull or Rockstar smoothies, and more. Their smoothies are especially fantastic and made with real organic fruit. If you need a snack to go with your drink, they’ve got some great food items on the menu as well. Most drivethru places only have a couple of muffins or pastries to choose from, but that’s not the case at the Coffee Barn. They do offer a selection of sweet pastries and bagels, but you really shouldn’t miss out on their incredible breakfast sandwiches, which are made fresh daily with cage-free eggs. Additionally, they carry Bob’s Red Mill oatmeal cups and some fantastic gluten-free and vegan Protein Pucks for those who are in need of an alternative. Following his father’s example of strong faith and morals, Drew’s focus is on connecting with people and doing his part to make the world a better place, all while making a fantastic beverage for you to enjoy. As current restrictions are relaxed, they intend to get involved with local fundraising activities and organizations. By serving each and every customer with care and sincerity, as well Newberg Community Advantage Magazine 7

YAMHILL COMMUNITY ACTION PARTNERSHIP
ALWAYS AT THE READY Written By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer
N
ot that any proof was needed, but there’s nothing quite like a pandemic to show how resilient, experienced and necessary the Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP) is as a resource for the area’s less fortunate in times of crisis. YCAP was founded in 1980 as part of a national network of locallycontrolled social service agencies designed to help improve the lives of low-income people and strengthen communities. The non-profit is based in McMinnville, but serves all residents of Yamhill County in four primary service categories: housing, energy, food assistance, and youth services. Development Director Laverne Pitts notes that in January of last year YCAP marked 40 years of service. No one then had any idea what 2020 would bring, but when COVID-19 hit just a few months later, the agency was among the first and fastest to act locally. “We’re always available,” Laverne says. “We have both the experience of a 40-year-old agency, and the flexibility of a non-profit.” YCAP is most active during November and December when they assist in building up the local food bank for holiday food baskets. During 2020, however, they kept busy all year. As housing became a problem for many suffering from shutdowns, YCAP quickly drew on its many partnerships to make emergency housing available through a local motel. The agency was also responsible for distributing $1.4 million in rent relief and is also charged with getting close to $1 million in energy assistance to families in need.

According to Laverne, the motel project has been particularly successful. About 66 percent of homeless residents who used the services have had positive exits into permanent housing and/or treatment programs. “We were really pleased with how all the partnerships came together for that project,” she says. “It really was a collaborative effort to get that program started in March, because the state and federal funding hadn’t come through yet.” YCAP continues to make many of these services available, whether they are needed because of Covid-19 or otherwise. Shelter and housing requests can be submitted at www. AnyDoorYamhill.org or call 503-687-1494 for a phone screening. To request help in paying an energy bill, visit www. yamhillcap.org/energy or call 503-687-1480 for a phone screening. Information on food pantry and meal site locations can be found at www.yamhillcap.org/food. YCAP has about 35 employees, most of whom are full-time, but they rely heavily on volunteers. This fall, volunteers coordinated a program that made a mobile shower unit available for local homeless people, and more volunteers assisted in January with the agency’s annual count of area homeless. Whether you are in need of help or want to provide help to others, YCAP stands at the ready, just as they have for forty years. We will probably never know just how far the ripples of this program have reached, and we may never truly comprehend all the good they have done for our local communities! Yamhill Community Action Partnership is located at 1317 NE Dustin Court in McMinnville. For more information, call them at 503-472-0457 or 1-855-2165289 (toll-free), visit their website at www.yamhillcap.org or find them on facebook. For the hearing impaired, dial Oregon Relay 711.

TOP THREE FOODS TO PREVENT BAD BREATH
CONFIDENT SMILE!
B
ad breath results from two key issues: oral hygiene and gastrointestinal health. Basically this means that breath odors originate not just inside the mouth but also from your digestive tract. The culprit in both cases is largely bacteria. Doctors will tell you that if you have bad breath, you should first make sure you are eating right (getting a balanced diet of protein, carbs, lots of fruits and veggies and plenty of fluids to keep the GI tract healthy) and brushing and flossing after every meal. But that still doesn’t mean you might not be offending your friends and co-workers after lunch at the new Italian place. Here are some things you can ingest (or chew) that can help. 1. CHEW ON THIS. Move over parsley, there are some new halitosis-fighting herbs in town. “Coriander, spearmint, tarragon, eucalyptus, rosemary and cardamom are all good for fighting bad breath,” says Dr. Christine Gerbstadt, who has lectured on oral health. You can chew on fresh herbs or make tonics by steeping them in hot water (as a tea). These herbs make an excellent digestif as well-doubling the benefits of ending a meal this way. 2. GET SOME ACTIVE CULTURE. No, not Cirque du Soleil, but yogurt. A recent study found that a serving of yogurt each day reduces the level of odor-causing hydrogen sulfide in the mouth. Apparently it also cuts back on bacteria in the mouth-plaque and gum disease were reduced in the study’s yogurt eaters as well. Plus, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends getting enough vitamin D from yogurt, cheese and milk if you’re worried about halitosis because this vitamin creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria growth. Be sure to get the kind of yogurt with active culturesnot overly processed or sugar-added varieties. 3. CRUNCHY TYPES. Apples, carrots, celery-basically any fiber-rich fruit or vegetable is your friend when it comes to fighting halitosis. “Inside your mouth, plaque build-up causes odors,” explains Cynthia Sass, ADA spokeswoman and registered dietician. “Eating foods that increase saliva production keep the mouth moist-and rinsed out. Also, many carbs and proteins can get stuck in your teeth-even healthy foods like whole grain cereal or chicken breast.” So follow a meal with a Granny Smith (feel the saliva kick in at the mention of it?) to cleanse the mouth.

RECIPE
Chocolate Fondue
Whether you’re planning a romantic evening with that special someone, or you want a fun and tasty treat for the whole family to enjoy, this Chocolate Fondue recipe is sure to be a Valentines hit! It’s easy to make, even without a fondue pot. Serve it with dip-ables such as strawberries or other slices of fruit, shortcake, pretzels, marshmallows, brownies or cookies. If you want to make a special adults-only version, try adding a couple tablespoons of Bailey’s or Amaretto for some extra flavor! INGREDIENTS: 12 ounces of milk or dark chocolate (chips or roughly chopped if from a block) 1 Cup (8 ounces) of heavy whipping cream A pinch of salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the cream with a pinch of salt over medium heat in a small saucepan until tiny bubbles show and it begins to lightly and slowly simmer. 2. Remove from heat, add the chocolate, and whisk until smooth and full incorporated. 3. Immediately transfer to a fondue pot heated at low or with a low flame, or serve straight from the pot. 4. Arrange the dip-ables on a platter or plates around the chocolate pot. Use a fondue fork, bamboo skewer, seafood fork, or salad fork to dip the fruit pieces and other dippables into the hot melted cream chocolate mixture. Eat immediately. If the fondue begins to feel a little stiff, add a tablespoon of heavy cream and stir. It will help it go a little longer. *recipe reprinted from simplyrecipes.com

Notable Figures Of Newberg By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer
E
asily the most famous historical figure to have lived on Newberg soil was former U.S. President Herbert Hoover, who spent a few formative years of his youth living here in the historic Minthorn House. But how many of these other Newberg notables do you know? SEBASTIAN BRUTSCHER: Brutscher was not the founder of Newberg; that distinction goes to Jesse Edwards, who platted the original townsite in 1881. But the city is named in honor of the Bavarian immigrant, who stowed away on a vessel at age 20 and arrived in New York in 1847. He bought “squatter’s rights” for 640 acres with $100 near the current site of Springbrook Plaza. Brutscher was appointed the city’s first postmaster in 1869, a job he shared with his wife Mary. When Edwards platted the city, he named it after Brutscher’s hometown of Neuberg. WILLIAM HOBSON: This Quaker settler was part of the antebellum exodus from North Carolina. His settlement in the Chehalem Valley led to the establishment of the Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends and played a crucial role in the founding of George Fox University. He is the subject of much historical research, including the 1913 book, A Quaker Warrior: The Life of William Hobson by William King Baker. The book has been digitized and reprinted from the collections of University of California Libraries. DR. HENRY JOHN MINTHORN: His name you probably know. His Newberg home at 115 S River Street is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Like many other early city luminaries, Minthorn was drawn to the area’s Quaker community. Both a teacher and physician, he played an important role in the formation of George Fox, but he’s better known as the uncle of the orphaned Herbert Hoover, who lived with Minthorn and his family from 1885 to 1891.

EWING YOUNG: Young was an early Oregon explorer, trapper, and settler with a reputation as a savvy entrepreneur. Though he did not live in Newberg, the proximity of his farm a few miles south of the city (and, no doubt, the business relationships he established here) have enabled the city to claim the Santa Fe Trail pioneer as one of their own; the local elementary school bears his name. Since he was wealthy and died without a will or an heir, the legal wrangling over his estate that followed led to the creation of Oregon’s provisional government. WALTER WEST: This Oregon farmer’s connection with Newberg actually began when he was living in Tillamook, where he raised dairy cows. The Wisconsin native served one term as a Republican in the Oregon Legislature in a district that included both Tillamook and Yamhill Counties. West moved to Newberg in 1906 and lived in a tent with his family while their home was being built. He later became prominent in the local agriculture community, serving on the boards for the Newberg Cooperative Growers Association and the Newberg Cannery. ALEX SCHOMBURG: Fastforward to the mid-20th century and we can note the arrival of this Puerto Rican native. Schomburg worked as a comic book artist under the late, great Stan Lee of Marvel Comics, drawing splashy covers for such characters as Captain America and the Human Torch. He moved to Newberg in the early 1960s, and a few years later spent some time in New York working on the visual design for Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. A few years before his death in 1998, he told The Oregonian’s Steve Duin that comics were “where I felt I did my best.” His former house is located at 414 N Meridian Street and now provides housing for GFU undergraduates.
MINDY DUNCAN: A resident of Hillsboro who attended Newberg High School, Duncan became Miss Oregon Teen USA in 1988 and went on to win Miss Teen USA for that year. Her victory at the ceremony in San Bernardino (hosted by the late Dick Clark) marked the first time that an Oregonian had won the competition. Only 16 at the time, she told the Associated Press after the win: “It’s wonderful. It’s a feeling you can’t explain. GINA OCHSNER: After graduating from what was then called George Fox College in 1992, Ochsner went on to establish herself as a successful author, winning more than 20 awards for her work. Her stories have been featured in numerous magazines and journals, including the New Yorker magazine. Among other accolades, Ochsner was awarded the prestigious Flannery O’Connor Award and the Oregon Book
Award for her short story collection The Necessary Grace to Fall, received the 2020 Kurt Vonnegut Prize in Short Fiction, and was awarded a John L. Simon Guggenheim Grant, as well as a grant from the National Endowment of Arts. SAGE CANADAY: Never say that high school sports can’t lead to bigger and better things! Canaday ran track and cross country while attending Newberg High School in the early 2000s, and went on to become a formidable competitor in long-distance running and ultramarathoning. At the age of 21 he became the youngest qualifier at the 2008 Olympic Trials marathon, and that same year he won the Ivy League, a 10,000-meter championship. Today, he operates Sage Running, an online running and coaching website with fellow marathoner Sandi Nypaver. This article was compiled from multiple sources of historical information, including Oregon Blue Book, academic and newspaper accounts, and others.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF NEWBERG & NEWBERG EARLY BIRDS PEACEBUILDER CLUBS Newberg’s two Rotary Clubs are charter members of Rotary District 5100’s 34 Peacebuilder Clubs. Chartered in 2011, as two of our district’s nine original Peacebuilder Clubs, we have been joined by 32 other Rotary Clubs here in District 5100 as well as some 200+ Rotary Clubs across the US and around the world. Peacebuilder Clubs have focused on supporting The Rotary Peace Centers Peace Fellowship program awards fellowships for master’s degree and certificate programs at seven institutions of higher learning located around the world. Since its inception in 2002, The Rotary Peace Centers have produced more than 1400 professional Rotary Peace Fellows, 95% of whom are currently working in peace-related fields across the spectrum of education, government, NGO, and civilian fields of service. Peacebuilder Clubs in Newberg, with additional financial support from District 5100 and the Jubitz Family Foundation, planted and dedicated nearly 70 Peace Poles since 2017 at our schools (from elementary to university), parks, government
facilities, churches, and local businesses to help begin a ‘conversation of peace’ among a large cross section of community leaders throughout the greater Newberg-Dundee area. Districtwide, thanks in large part to the Jubitz Family Foundation, we now have more than 300 Peace Poles, and growing. Globally, hundreds of thousands of peace poles have been installed celebrating peace in over 100 countries. The two Rotary Clubs’ joint Peace Committee has also participated in numerous community events such as Sept. 21 International Day of Peace, Martin Luther King and Earth Day commemorations and celebrations. In future issues we will share about other programs, projects, and efforts of our Peacebuilding efforts.

ason Thompson started his work for Budget Blinds of McMinnville in 2009, installing high quality window coverings for clients throughout Yamhill County and the surrounding areas. In 2013, he bought the store and now runs it with a highly experienced and dedicated crew of five.
More than a decade after getting into the window covering business, he still loves seeing new products come down the line and sharing them with his clients. “I enjoy seeing the results of a job, and customers happy and excited,” Jason says. Some window blind dealers rely only on one vendor and have a limited selection, but Budget Blinds of McMinnville works with a variety of vendors to offer everything from standard shades and blinds to shutters, motorized shades, honeycomb, and drapes. Their enormous selection allows them to accommodate nearly any style and budget. It’s such a large selection and variety, Jason notes, that it’s not even possible to have them all on display in the showroom. Ever cognizant of industry trends, Jason and his team have noted that in the past year homeowners preferences have definitely shifted, as they find themselves staying at home more than in the past. People are wanting a lighter, warmer environment throughout their homes, so lighter woods and wall colors are expected to be trending throughout 2021. Thankfully, Budget Blinds is well prepared to accommodate that demand - “There’s a lot to choose from,” Jason says.
McMinnville, where employees wear masks and high-touch areas are regularly cleaned after the previous customer leaves the store. Before you go, though, it may be helpful to visit their website, where you can find plenty of information about the products before seeing them in person. However, the Budget Blinds team can also bring the showroom to you with a free in-home or virtual consultation. When you’ve decided on the look you want, they take meticulous measurements to ensure the perfect fit. “No two windows are the same,” says Jason, “so our sales team measures every window to give you a custom window covering, and we guarantee the fit. We have some window coverings that can help with insulating as well.” Jason and the crew at Budget Blinds of McMinnville are committed to the local community and also to veterans. In partnership with Springs Window Fashions, the McMinnville store is proud to be the official window coverings supplier for Homes For Our Troops, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to build and donate specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans to enable them to rebuild their lives.
