f you have had a joint replacement and are still taking antibiotics prior to your dental appointment you may be unnecessarily doing so. In the past it was common for a joint replacement patient to premedicate with a large dosage of an antibiotic such as amoxicillin or clindamycin, even though little evidence supported the practice and experts recommended against its practice for most dental patients. As of 2012 the ADA and the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons have updated their guidelines to state that dentists “might consider discontinuing the practice of routinely prescribing prophylactic antibiotics”. After carefully reviewing the scientific literature, the ADA found that dental procedures are not associated with prosthetic joint implant infections, and antibiotics given prior to a dental procedure does not help prevent infections for most patients. In fact, it was noted that for most people the risks of unnecessarily taking an antibiotic outweighed the perceived benefits. Adverse effects include nausea, mild to severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis included), antibiotic resistance (potential for superbugs), diarrhea, and gut flora imbalances. As with anything there are exceptions. For a small percentage of patients, antibiotic prophylaxis might be helpful. Those patients are ones that are immunocompromised in some way such as patients with uncontrolled diabetes, undergoing chemotherapy, cancer treatment, history of endocarditis, artificial heart valves, and other heart anomalies. The best way to know if you need to take an antibiotic prior to your dental appointment is to ask your dentist or physician. Our eyes adjust to the increased light, and as we stand on our front yard feeling the freshly sprouted blades of grass between our toes, things come into greater focus, and we begin to notice all the havoc wreaked on our homes from all that cold winter weather. Siding that has started to warp or split, paint that has chipped or faded. Especially as time goes on, year after year, those problems only get worse. It can become a threat to the integrity of the structure as much as it is an eyesore. We need someone we can trust who will fix all of that. We need JK Paint & Contracting, based out of Newberg. Joe Kelly is the owner, operator and founder of the company, and he keeps things straightforward in terms of their philosophy: treat each project as if it were our family’s own.
