Treat To Eat And A Treat To Keep! That’s how Carla Mayes, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Tanasbourne, so aptly describes her business. If you haven’t had a chance to visit her store yet, do yourself a favor and get there soon. I promise this is going to be your new favorite dessert place! Not only do they serve a plethora of different cake flavors and sizes, but they also have a fairly extensive collection of gift items and party supplies, which truly makes this a one-stop shopping mecca for all things party related. There’s quite a story behind this amazing business and their unbelievable cakes. However this ridiculous day got its start, it gained tremendous popularity during the 18th century throughout Britain and much of Europe, eventually finding its way to various countries around the world.

April Fools’ Day has actually been celebrated in some form for centuries and by many different cultures. The exact origins of the day are not entirely clear, but some speculate that it dates back to the 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar, the new year actually began on or around April first, so as to coincide with the Spring Equinox.

One of the craziest April Fools’ hoaxes of all time was that of the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest in 1957. On April first of that year, the respectable BBC news program Panorama announced that thanks to a mild winter and the elimination of a dreaded creature called the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were celebrating an enormous spaghetti harvest. They even showed footage of Swiss people pulling strands of spaghetti out of trees! The prank was so convincing that many British citizens called in wanting to know how they could get their own spaghetti tree.

ave you ever fallen victim to a crazy prank on the first of April? It’s happened to most of us at one point or another. Did you have to endure more cockamamie shenanigans yet again this year? Don’t feel bad if that’s the case; you’re not the only one. Here is the history behind the day that makes us want to run for cover each spring.

In changing to the Gregorian calendar, the new year moved to January first. Many people, however, were not immediately aware of the change and continued to celebrate in the last week of March leading up to April first. As is still the case today, mockery often follows when one is slow to discover new trends or information, so these poor folks became the butt of jokes and were known as “April Fools.” One particular prank was to put a paper fish on such a person’s back, symbolizing an easily caught fish or a gullible person. Another possible theory about the origins of April Fools’ Day ties it back to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, which is Latin for “joyful.” This celebration took place at the end of March and often involved people dressing up in costumes to disguise themselves, before going around and mocking other citizens and magistrates. Yet another idea is that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox (first day of Spring) in the Northern Hemisphere, and served as a metaphor of sorts for how the forces of nature trick people with their sudden changes at this time of year. 8 FOR MORE COUPONS VISIT WWW.FROGCOUPONS.COM

Some pranks are more alarming than funny, though. On the morning of April first, 1974, the town of Sitka, Alaska awoke to find that clouds of black smoke were rising from the crater of Mount Edgecumbe, a long-time dormant volcano. Panic nearly set in, but thankfully it was discovered that a local practical joker, not an angry mother nature, was responsible for the ominous smoke. Porky Bickar was so committed to his April Fools’ stunt that he flew hundreds of old tires into the crater of the volcano and lit them on fire, which I’m sure all of us will agree was a terrible idea, joke or no. When Mount Saint Helens erupted six years later, one victim of his prank wrote Porky to tell him that this time he’d gone too far. Hopefully any pranks that you may or may not have fallen for this year were merely harmless and silly, but remember next year that when April first rolls around again, it’s wise to keep one eye open for tricksters like Porky. *info from history.com and hoaxes.org

he interesting and eventful history of Carr Chevrolet dates all the way back to 1919, when the population of Beaverton was only around 600. As a point of comparison, today it’s at just under 100,000 - you could say we’ve grown a little! Back then there were only two roads in town, Farmington and Canyon, and they weren’t even paved.

In those days automobiles were still considered to be a little trickier than horses. Things went well for Guy, and in 1923 he bought out his stepfather, took over the business, and sold Ford automobiles from that location until the building burned down in 1930. The structure was rebuilt, however, and the company continued to flourish until the early 1940’s. Then an opportunity to sell a new line of automobiles presented itself, and Carr Chevrolet was born. The new business thrived, becoming a landmark in the community that would last for decades. It wasn’t until 1987, after 68 years in the industry, that Guy finally retired, but his legacy as a successful businessman and foundational member of the Beaverton community continues to live on.

Guy Carr arrived in Beaverton just after World War 1, and he immediately started work for his stepfather, Otto Erickson. Otto was the mayor of Beaverton at that time and also owned the Ford Dealership in town (located on Canyon, where Carr Subaru still resides today). Guy started out, as did a majority of the THEY’VE TRULY employees, doing a little bit of everything. Around the time of Guy’s retirement, the Carr dealership was purchased by another name you may recognize: Wayne Kuni, owner of Kuni Cadillac. He hired Gene as his sales manager, and in just over a decade they transformed it into not only one of the top dealerships in the city, but one of the top 20 in the nation! Their highly successful partnership proved to be the key in unlocking many doors on their path. So in 1989 when Kuni put the Carr dealership up for sale, Wally brought Gene in with him as an equal partner and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1999, they split the company into Chevrolet and Subaru, leaving Subaru at the old location and moving Chevrolet to a newer location west of Murray. The Carr dealerships are still family-run to this day. Gene sadly passed back in 2011 and Wally has since retired, although he remains on the board as an active member. Their shares of the company were split up into quarters and are now owned by their four sons (2 on Wally’s side and 2 on Gene’s). Wally’s son Brad Preble is a co-owner and the current president, and it’s obvious in talking to him how much he values the legacy and familial heritage of the company. Under his direction, they’ve truly mastered that “big but small” ideal - big in that they are one of the most successful dealerships in the Northwest Region (number 1, 2, or 3 every year in the region and number 1 every year

in Oregon), but small in that their focus stays rooted in their family values and sense of community. From their annual employee/family picnics (where the owners and managers all serve the other employees) all the way down to their daily lunches (where everyone from the top executives in the company to the newest hire sit in the same room and mingle), their open door policies and family atmosphere are consistently practiced. In fact, the wall in their waiting area is literally covered with awards, including Top 100 Places To Work In Oregon, year after year, amongst many others. Their commitment to care and service extends to the rest of the community as well. Not only do they give us the best customer service of any dealership around, but Carr Chevrolet also donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to various charities and organizations in the community, including Providence Child Center, Beaverton High School, and numerous others. MEET THE ARTIST Nate Marcel By David Bates

orest Grove artist Nate Marcel is one of those people who started drawing as a kid and never stopped. “There’s always been a lot of encouragement,” said Nate. His grandfather and mother were also artists, and upon discovering and collecting comics as an adolescent, he started drawing his own comics and sharing with friends. He attended South Eugene High School in the 1980s and found there was a demand for his work: posters advertising theater productions at the school. Nate has been drawing and painting professionally since 1995, even before he decided to get formal training. He studied art at Portland State University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in drawing, painting, and printmaking in 2001 and an MFA two years later. Since 2004, he has been an adjunct drawing instructor at Portland Community College (his “day job”) while also working as a freelance illustrator for private clients, companies and collectors. He’s also currently teaching classes for the classic role playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. Visitors to his website are greeted by fantastical, other-worldly visions. His clients have included the tabletop role playing game Dungeon World, Khepera Publishing, the creator of Atlantis: the Second Age and other games. Also Dungeon Crawl Classics, for whom he just finished some work for the “gonzo super science & sorcery post-apocalyptic setting” of Umerica. He also illustrated The Clay that Woke for game designer Paul Czege.

He works in a variety of media - acrylic, oil, pencil and mixed media. You can get a sense of his eclectic output on his website, where you’ll find monsters, giants, insectoid creatures and imaginary worlds, but also more traditional paintings: pastoral landscapes and farm scenes, flora and bowls of fruit. He also has a personal passion project, Westessexford, an ongoing comic he’s worked on since 2009 that takes place in an extraordinarily detailed imaginary city. Given that Nate’s day job is teaching art, he obviously has thoughts about young people considering an art career. “I think there are more opportunities actually to get your art seen, but certainly I think the biggest piece I see younger people missing is learning the fundamentals and putting the effort in with the hard work earlier rather than learning twenty years later that you need to do it,” he said. INGREDIENTS 10 hard boiled eggs Food colorings 1 tsp vinegar for each color you are using Water 1/2 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip DIRECTIONS 1. Remove the shells from the hard boiled eggs and slice each egg in half. Remove the yolks and place in a bowl. Set aside. 2. Get enough glasses or mugs for the number of colors you want to use. Fill the mugs or glasses 2/3 of the way full with cold water. Add 3 drops of desired food coloring along with 1 tsp vinegar to each mug or cup. 3. Place egg whites in the mugs and allow to sit in the food coloring until desired color is reached. 4. Remove whites from dye and drain on a plate lined with a couple of paper towels. 5. Take the reserved yolks and mash them with a fork, then mix in the mayonnaise (you can also add salt and other seasonings at this point). 6. Pipe or spoon the yolk mix into the colored egg whites.
