APRIL SPOTLIGHT Profiles: Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance

with Dr. Bill Thierfelder Wednesday, April 7 11am-12:30pm Zoom Handouts on library website

TO

In this program, we explore the contributions of Langston Hughes, one of the most visible writers of the Harlem Renaissance. His writing reflected the idea that black culture should be celebrated because of its value to the fabric of America and the world. He advocated these beliefs in many of his most famous poems, including “I, Too, Sing America,” “Let America be America Again,” and “Hold Fast to Dreams.” Today, Hughes is recognized as one of the towering figures of American Literature whose accessible poetry challenges us to explore the power of diversity to create unity.

by Charles Homans Wednesday, April 14 1-1:30pm, Zoom 843 9729 0006 Article available on library website Excerpt: “There are 400 million privately owned guns in America, by some estimates, and on Jan. 20, 2020, some 22,000 of their owners arrived at the State Capitol of Virginia, a neoclassical building designed by Thomas Jefferson that sits on a rolling lawn in the hilly center of downtown Richmond. The occasion was Lobby Day, a recent tradition in Virginia, held annually on Martin Luther King's Birthday, on which citizen groups come to the Capitol to directly air their concerns to their representatives in the State Legislature.” Where do armed protesters fit into the fractured landscape of an American democracy and individual rights?

Congressman John Lewis (GA-5) is an American icon, one of the key figures of the civil rights movement. His commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper’s farm to the halls of Congress, from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on Washington, and from receiving beatings from state troopers to receiving the Medal of Freedom from the first African-American president.

Big Burger Drive-In By Brad Neuhoff and Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writers

BIG BURGER DRIVE-IN is a 3rd generation locallyowned burger joint opened by the Deardorff family all the way back in 1967, and it’s been a landmark in Molalla ever since. Conveniently located at the intersection of Highways 211 and 213, no matter which direction you come from, it’s the perfect place to stop for a bite… or as the name implies, an enormous mouthful. 54 years since first opening their doors and Big Burger is still a family owned and operated local gem, run with the same values and commitment that they started off with 3 generations ago. Current owner Katy Deardorff AMAZING says it’s business as usual for them, and thanks to their drive thru, not even the chaos of 2020 could put a hitch in their step. “We’ve been around a FLAVORS THAT long time and it’s become an iconic little spot for CAN’T BE Molalla. We have not changed a thing with what FOUND we do here, and people appreciate that.” JUST

will your taste buds dance with delight, but your wallet will be pleasantly surprised by their very affordable prices as well. “It’s cheap and that’s a ANYWHERE! Katy has been proud to take the reins of this burger huge advantage to the customer because you are legacy, which began with her Grandpa Bruce and was still getting a quality burger meal for a cheaper price than followed by her father Alan, who is semi-retired. You could say if you went elsewhere,” says Katy. that she knew it was her destiny; “The whole time through college Depending on the day, they can sell anywhere from 250-300 I was always thinking ‘how could I apply this to Big Burger?’” burgers, which is pretty impressive for a small mom and pop she says, “That is when I was like, yes I want to do this.” establishment located in a small-ish town that’s off the beaten Big Burger’s formula for success is simple: good old fashioned burgers and shakes, made fresh and served with a smile. “It’s kind of in the middle of fast food and sit-down,” Katy says. “It’s better quality than other places.” Take one bite, and you’ll taste that quality. Big Burger’s burgers are far and away better than most any others and they do take a little longer to prepare, but that’s a tradeoff customers are willing to tolerate, because it’s so worth it. The Burgers are, to state the obvious, big, and you can get a Single, Double, or the popular Bacon Triple Cheeseburger all with their legendary homemade sauce and fries. path of I-5. Once you’ve tried it though, you’ll see what all the fuss is about and why people would be willing to drive miles for one of their amazing burgers. “Everything is cooked to order,” Katy explains. “We have not changed it at all. We have been here 50 plus years, so we believe we have nailed it.” For those who may not fancy a traditional burger, they also offer a Vegetarian Burger, as well as Chicken Strips, Fish & Chips, Fried Shrimp, and Clam Strip baskets. Or you can get your fish or chicken on a bun in one of their sandwich baskets. When it comes to sides they have all the usual options, including fries, tater tots, and onion rings, but

LEGENDARY

homemade sauce & fries you won’t be likely to find their Deep Fried Mushrooms or Munchers (cheese stuffed tots) anywhere else. Of course, it wouldn’t be the classic burger joint it is without serving up an amazing milkshake, and the sky is the limit on flavors. The usual choices go without saying, but flavors like Caramel, Cherry, Marshmallow, Peanut Butter, Peppermint, and Pineapple can’t be found just anywhere. There might even be too many options for some people, as Katy illustrates, “I’ve made graveyard shakes where they want every flavor included in one shake!” If that’s a little too crazy for you, they also offer soft serve ice cream, banana splits, sundaes, and deep fried twinkies to satisfy that sweet tooth. Katy is ever conscious of the legacy that she has inherited and she is fully committed to continuing the family

traditions that have made Big Burger such a local treasure for over 50 years. She still works alongside her dad, and hopes to be able to pass the business and traditions down to the next generation as well. “We will see if our little one on the way will take it over and keep it going,” she says hopefully. “I have been around it my whole life and that is what has me emotionally invested. My heart is in it.” Next time you’re passing through Molalla, don’t miss the chance to stop in and get the tastiest burger you could imagine. You’ll probably want to come through town a lot more often! Big Burger Drive-In is located at 31465 OR-213 in Molalla at the intersection of Hwy 213 and Hwy 211. Visit their website at molallabigburger.com to see their menu and give them a call at 503.829.4240 to place an order. ◾

DIVINE COMPLEXIONS

Double Chin? Not For Long!

W

e’ve all been there right? The shock of seeing a photo taken of us or doing a double take in the mirror and realizing that there is more skin under there than we’d like. Maybe you’ve gained some weight or had a baby recently and you no longer have that sharp jawline you’d like. Well there is a solution and it’s called Kybella.

When You’ll See Results

Kybella was the first and only treatment to be approved by the FDA to eliminate supplemental fat (aka - a double chin). Here’s what you need to know about this process:

What Does It Cost?

What To Expect

Getting the Kybella treatment is a quick process. It is a series of injections in the fat tissue of the chin area that takes about 30 minutes. The product has lidocaine in it so you feel a prick but it is not terribly uncomfortable. Immediately following the procedure, you should expect some tenderness and some swelling. Significant swelling may last up to three weeks, but right now with

wearing masks, there’s no better time to get this treatment - no one will ever know! You’ll simply emerge from all of this with that celebrity jawline.

Plan on 8 weeks to take your after photo. After the initial swelling goes down, you’ll see a difference, but the full result will be most noticeable around the 8 week mark.

The price depends on how many vials or treatments you get. Most clients need between 3 to 5 treatments and each treatment costs around $600.

Further questions about Kybella? Email at info@DivineComplexions.com. Christine Lewy is a Licensed Esthetician, Owner of Divine Complexions Spa, and West Coast Regional GloSkinBeauty Makeup Artist.

ACADEMY MORTGAGE

Focused on People & Purpose Driven By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

A

nyone who’s been living in the Portland Metro Area for the past year knows that the real estate market is on fire right now. Record low inventory of available properties simultaneously mixed with exceptionally low interest rates means that it’s a great time to sell and to buy! If you’re even considering getting into the real estate market, now is absolutely the time to do it. Don’t let trepidation over the current conditions keep you from taking advantage of such ideal conditions. Even if you’re unsure of how to navigate the choppy waters during these unprecedented circumstances, you don’t have to do it alone. There are experts out there who will be happy to help guide you, and the best of the best are right here in Wilsonville. Academy Mortgage is a nationwide corporation that has been in existence for over 30 years and has become one of the nation’s largest independent mortgage lenders. At the core of their success lies the belief that the American Dream is built upon sustainable homeownership. That does not mean shackling clients to a mortgage they can’t afford; that’s not “the

14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2021

dream”. Sustainable homeownership means owning the “home of your dreams” while simultaneously retaining the additional funds to live your best life. Utilizing a plethora of innovative home mortgage tools they have at their disposal, the professionals at Academy Mortgage are able to educate and help navigate their clients through the entire process, starting with the establishment of an appropriate price point from which to begin their search. Their people-centric and purpose-driven mission is to provide this service (sustainable homeownership) by inspiring hope, making dreams a reality, and building prosperity in the families and communities they serve. We are fortunate here in Wilsonville to have a branch that is staffed by a team of outstanding individuals: Brad Hansen (the branch manager) and Chad Krober (the team leader) have been working together for 15 years, and, along with the production team of loan officers they have assembled, are at the top of their field. They are the largest Academy Mortgage team in Oregon, as well as being in the top 5 of all lending groups statewide, and one of the top 5 Academy teams in the country.

The list of accolades goes on: Top 200 in Mortgage Originators 2016 & 2018* (Mortgage Executive Magazine), Top 1% Nationwide 2013-2020* (Mortgage Executive Magazine, Scotsman Guide), #1 Lending Team in Oregon 2015-2016* (Mortgage Executive Magazine), Five Star Rated Team 2009-2020 (Portland Monthly Magazine), and over $1 Billion originated & 110 years of Lending & Banking experience (*non-banking). While this long list of accolades is highly impressive, the Five Star rating is perhaps the most telling. The Five Star award is an industry rating presented to wealth managers, real estate agents, mortgage professionals, home/auto insurance professionals and dentists in more than 45 markets in the U.S. and Canada. This award recognizes service professionals who provide the highest level of quality service to their clients (according to the Five Star Award website). The honor is only identified through evaluations submitted by actual consumers and real estate agents - 3rd party entities who have nothing to gain from their positive evaluations. Brad has won this award a staggering 9 times, and Chad has won 8 times, so you’d be hard pressed to find a lender with a better reputation! If you’re still not convinced that you should go to Academy Mortgage first, there are a few more factors to consider. First of all, they are available to help you 24/7! One of the biggest disadvantages of going through banks is that they work bank hours. The team at Academy Mortgage is available 7 days a week, morning or night. Brad even gives out his personal number to clients so they can reach him at any time. Secondly, they have very competitive rates. Because they have such positive working relationships with so many different institutions and investors, not to mention one of the broadest product mixes in the industry, they are able to consistently provide the most competitive rates.

Third, they have a distinct advantage of being a direct lender which means that all of their loan processing, underwriting, and funding are handled locally. Keeping it local results in quicker turnaround times (by professionals who live and work in your area and know the local markets) and circulates your money back into the local economy. It’s a win-win situation! Below the surface, according to Brad, it’s really about the corporate culture at Academy Mortgage. He actually retired from a 20+ year career in consumer packaged goods where he had worked his way up to Divisional Vice President, in order to join Academy. At heart, Brad is a humanitarian with strong ties to the community and an insatiable desire to “give back”. Academy provides him that opportunity by maintaining a dedication to consistent philanthropic activity as one of their key pillars of business. BUILDING BUSINESS - BUILDING COMMUNITY Hello, Wilsonville! Jaimy Beltran here, of Beltran Property Group. The calendar is reflecting springtime and as I look out the window, I can see that the weather is at least making an attempt to catch up. While we are all, of course, still working within COVID pandemic safety protocols, we are full of springtime hope that as more community members are vaccinated, we may begin the journey back toward more normal lives. As your new Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce 2021 Board Chair, I'd like to share a few thoughts: First, I'm very proud of the fact that we have been in the position to act as leaders in the community, innovatively leveraging virtual technology for our Wilsonville businesses and the community at large. Last year, we pioneered a 4th of July ten hour Jaimy Beltran livestream for our residents. We WACC Board Chair also hosted a very successful virtual Candidates Mayor/City Council Candidates Forum in October, and created a monthly virtual Next Level Networking event where businesses from nine surrounding Chambers have had the opportunity to continue making valuable business connections even during the pandemic. As pandemic conditions improve, we are looking forward to leading the way back to live, in-person, and hybrid events. While we will, of course, continue to follow all CDC health and safety guidelines, we are anxious to begin enabling that person-to-person contact we've all been missing. In fact, we’ve already started the process! Some of you may have witnessed the hybrid Ribbon Cutting Ceremony we just performed for Divine Complexions in Argyle Square. Mayor Julie Fitzgerald and I were able to welcome Christine Lewy and her team to their beautiful brand new location while simultaneously connecting via livestream to a Facebook and YouTube audience in order to share the experience. It’s hard to believe, but we've now hosted almost 100 such livestream broadcasts to promote our local area businesses! Secondly, the Wilsonville Chamber has adopted a Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion and Equity (CODIE) statement. We are asking every business in Wilsonville to consider signing on. As a member of the latino community myself, this is particularly close to my heart. I’m very proud to be involved in its creation and implementation. Third, and perhaps most importantly, via funding from the City of Wilsonville Community Opportunity Grant, we've had the opportunity to purchase licenses for some excellent online DEI training (Diversity/Equity/Inclusion). As a result, any business, employee, or Wilsonville resident can enroll for free and take DEI modular training. And last but not least, I’d like to just say how grateful I am to be a part of such a wonderful, unique, and inspired community. From our passionate, culturally diverse residents, to our equally passionate and diverse businesses, to our beautiful parks and homes. This is a community I feel infinitely fortunate to serve. Wilsonville has a payroll of more than $1 billion dollars. Jobs matter to all of us and as your Wilsonville Chamber, we are committed to continuing the fight to help grow quality jobs for Wilsonville.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for me or the Wilsonville Chamber, please reach out via email at: jaimy@beltranproperties.com.

WILSONVILLE AREA CHAMBER CODIE STATEMENT (Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity)

The Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce (WACC) is committed to creating and promoting economic vitality for business in the South Metro Region. To accomplish this, WACC strives to make a Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (CODIE) a priority for our Chamber and our Region’s Business Community. WACC is committed to promoting business opportunities for all regardless of race, color, national origin, immigration or refugee status, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, mental, emotional, and/or physical ability, age, or economic status. Collectively, we can contribute to the health and well-being of our business community, its work force, and the Wilsonville Community our members serve. As part of our Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity, we stand united against racism and bigotry. Together, we commit to investing in substantive change in our organizations and communities to address racial inequities and social injustice. We believe everyone has the right to earn a living with equal access and opportunity and to share in our regional economic prosperity. To propel this group effort forward, we have identified the following actions as our responsibility in leading equitable changes which will uplift the individuals in our community who have been left vulnerable by historic and systemic barriers. • We will educate ourselves and disseminate the history of systemic racism in Oregon and the barriers it enables to the present day. • We will create opportunities to listen to those affected and marginalized by these barriers to learn how we can help. • We will support, lift, collaborate with, and encourage funding nonprofits which serve marginalized communities. • We will use our influence and position to amplify unheard voices and endorse policies that lead to racial justice. • We will improve the access, employment, training, advancement, support, and success of people of color in our workforces. • We will continue the conversation by engaging with the South Metro business community to collectively address the issues of racism, oppression, and bias in our organizations and communities.

Change is possible and we are capable, but it is going to take all of us. We listen. We act. We do better.

MARTIN’S

TOWN & COUNTRY FURNITURE Written by Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photography by Carly Carpenter

Neil

Joel

Your source for top quality home furnishings, everyday low prices & first class service. Serving the community since 1963! Martin’s Town & Country Furniture has been such a stable fixture in our part of the Willamette Valley for so many years that they almost need no introduction. They’ve built a reputation over the decades for being the best place to find quality furniture at reasonable prices. That said, they are a neighbor, and we don’t always get to know our neighbors as well as we perhaps should. The history of Martin’s actually began back in 1947, when Walter R. Martin opened Martin’s Furniture & Appliance Co. in Molalla. His brother Ernie came on board soon after. A few years later Walt moved his family to Canby, and on his daily commute he took notice of some property 3 ½ miles south of Canby. When the time was right he purchased that property, sold the original store to Ernie, and built a new home furnishings store closer to home. That “new” store, which opened in 1963, still exists today. Nearly 60 years later, the store is now run by the 3rd generation; Neil Martin and Joel Hall. Two of Walt’s sons, Bob and Neil, were the 2nd generation and both retired after about 40 years with the store. This is the definition of a family business!

We’re Outstanding In Our Field!

Furniture stores seem to come and go every few years. They pop up out of nowhere and before you can even locate your receipt to check the fine print on the warranty, they’ve disappeared. How has Martin’s stuck around for so long? More importantly, how have they maintained their good standing in the community when so many competitors have failed? Well, meeting Neil in person answers one of those questions straight off the bat. Neil is warm and friendly, the genuine article, and the kind of guy you sincerely want to do business with. It’s also immediately evident that, as a businessman, he knows what he’s doing and has his 22 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2021

priorities straight. To Neil, when it comes to making a transaction, it’s not about the sale. It’s about the customer and it’s about the service. It’s about what they can give to their customers, rather than what they can get from them. Martin’s, carefully selects the manufacturers they partner with, so they believe in their products and they stand by them 100%. They do everything they can, and then some, to assist every customer in finding what they are looking for, but they never pressure anyone. That’s not how they do business. They don’t work on commission and they don’t artificially inflate prices in order to tempt you with talk of “great deals” or “deep discounts.” They just want to provide the best quality items at the fairest prices while offering the best service. It’s as simple as that. In the home furnishings business, you really do get what you pay for. Because Martin’s brands are of a higher quality than the cheaply-made promotional furniture so readily available, some of their prices may seem a little steep at first glance, but when comparing apples to apples, they are right on the mark. You may find a similar item for less money elsewhere, but the quality of the Martin’s item will ensure that in the long run, you will be glad you invested a little more. As it happens, I can personally attest to the quality of Martin’s products - in my living room right now, there is a coffee table my wife’s parents bought at Martin’s back in 1978. Going on a half century later, it’s still a great table that’s held up fabulously over the years! With only a few exceptions, this is all American made furniture, too. So the next time you need a new piece of furniture, make the smart choice and choose Martin’s. You’ll get more bang for your buck, and as a bonus help to support a locally owned and operated family business who treats you like family too! Martin’s Town & Country Furniture is located at 27050 State Hwy 170 in Canby. Give them a call at 503-266-3678 or visit canbycomfort.com for more information. See our ad on the back cover!

attress stores seem to be a dime a dozen, with locations on virtually every street corner and dozens of online options as well. I have to admit that before speaking to Sean Hathaway, President and Owner of Mattress World Northwest, I was ignorant of the nuances distinguishing one mattress retailer from another. I thought that one buying experience would virtually be the same as the next. I could not have been more wrong.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the MWNW operational plan is their third prong: SEAN HATHAWAY prioritizing philanthropic Owner activity in the communities they serve. Not satisfied with simply donating money (although they generously do that as well), Sean and the MWNW team incorporate charitable giving into their entire corporate culture. Walk into any one of their stores at nearly any time, and you’ll probably see them promoting some sort of fundraising event, whether it’s in support of Polar Plunge For Special Olympics Oregon, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, or one of our local schools.

For starters, there’s the personal element. This isn’t just a “job” for Sean. He has been in this business for over 25 years! He started the parent company Furniture Showcase, Inc. in 1995; and has been serving the community as Mattress World Northwest (MWNW) since 2004. April is

OF SEASONAL INTEREST

Written By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

H

However this ridiculous day got its start, it gained tremendous popularity during the 18th century throughout Britain and much of Europe, eventually finding its way to various countries around the world.

April Fools’ Day has actually been celebrated in some form for centuries and by many different cultures. The exact origins of the day are not entirely clear, but some speculate that it dates back to the 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar, the new year actually began on or around April first, so as to coincide with the Spring Equinox.

One of the craziest April Fools’ hoaxes of all time was that of the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest in 1957. On April first of that year, the respectable BBC news program Panorama announced that thanks to a mild winter and the elimination of a dreaded creature called the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were celebrating an enormous spaghetti harvest. They even showed footage of Swiss people pulling strands of spaghetti out of trees! The prank was so convincing that many British citizens called in wanting to know how they could get their own spaghetti tree.

ave you ever fallen victim to a crazy prank on the first of April? It’s happened to most of us at one point or another. Did you have to endure more cockamamie shenanigans yet again this year? Don’t feel bad if that’s the case; you’re not the only one. Here is the history behind the day that makes us want to run for cover each spring.

In changing to the Gregorian calendar, the new year moved to January first. Many people, however, were not immediately aware of the change and continued to celebrate in the last week of March leading up to April first. As is still the case today, mockery often follows when one is slow to discover new trends or information, so these poor folks became the butt of jokes and were known as “April Fools.” One particular prank was to put a paper fish on such a person’s back, symbolizing an easily caught fish or a gullible person. Another possible theory about the origins of April Fools’ Day ties it back to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, which is Latin for “joyful.” This celebration took place at the end of March and often involved people dressing up in costumes to disguise themselves, before going around and mocking other citizens and magistrates. Yet another idea is that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox (first day of Spring) in the Northern Hemisphere, and served as a metaphor of sorts for how the forces of nature trick people with their sudden changes at this time of year. 28 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2021

Some pranks are more alarming than funny, though. On the morning of April first, 1974, the town of Sitka, Alaska awoke to find that clouds of black smoke were rising from the crater of Mount Edgecumbe, a long-time dormant volcano. Panic nearly set in, but thankfully it was discovered that a local practical joker, not an angry mother nature, was responsible for the ominous smoke. Porky Bickar was so committed to his April Fools’ stunt that he flew hundreds of old tires into the crater of the volcano and lit them on fire, which I’m sure all of us will agree was a terrible idea, joke or no. When Mount Saint Helens erupted six years later, one victim of his prank wrote Porky to tell him that this time he’d gone too far. Hopefully any pranks that you may or may not have fallen for this year were merely harmless and silly, but remember next year that when April first rolls around again, it’s wise to keep one eye open for tricksters like Porky. *info from history.com and hoaxes.org

BELTRAN PROPERTIES GROUP Integrating Community

I

f you’ve been following our regular articles each month, you’ll be intimately familiar with Jaimy and Sherine Beltran of Beltran Properties Group at eXp Realty. They have been instrumental in not only assisting so many people with the buying and selling of homes, but also in keeping us all updated on the status of the real estate industry as a whole. The past year has been a volatile one; plagued by anxiety and insecurity, but they’ve kindly held our hands and walked us through it. The real estate market can be a scary place, but with friends like the Beltrans, we can face those fears with confidence. Surprisingly, the real estate market has remained stable throughout all the chaos brought on by COVID and political unrest. In fact, it’s been better than stable. There have been record low inventories for months. Houses are going on the market and being sold in mere days for over-asking-price offers. Interest rates have remained incredibly low too, resulting in a market that is hot for both sellers and buyers alike. The Beltrans have been on the front lines, fighting for us this entire time; constantly adjusting their business model, updating their technology, and creatively applying new methods of navigating the market, to accommodate every client’s specific needs. Early this year, Jaimy was honored with a board chair position at the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce. He’s been a member 30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2021

for over 10 years, but this new position has given him a much greater opportunity to positively affect the community at large. In particular, he’s very excited to push for a relaunching of in-person networking events (as CDC safety protocols and restrictions allow). Safety is his biggest concern, of course, but within safety guidelines, he also recognizes the necessity for businesses, especially new businesses, to have in-person events. Although the chamber has worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to keep local businesses afloat, there is only so much they can do over the internet. The business community relies on social events to thrive. It’s with that in mind, then that Jaimy plans to reinstate a heavier focus on promotional events in coming months, as COVID allows. He wants to bridge the gap; to bring residents back Divine Complexions Ribbon Cutting Event into town and reintroduce them to new and old businesses alike. As a result of his increased focus and efforts, Jaimy was happy

position and excited by the prospect of affecting more positive change in the community.

BPG Management Team (L to R): Ethan Frelly, Sherine Beltran, Jaimy Beltran & Mike Rohrig,

to attend a highly successful ribbon cutting ceremony in February for the grand opening of Divine Complexions. Jaimy, Chamber CEO Kevin Ferrasci, Mayor Julie Fitzgerald, and business owner Christine Lewy were all present while the community was invited to witness the event on Facebook Live. Jaimy also feels like his new position on the board will assist him to better serve his clients. It’s not just a real estate transaction that he is providing. To him, it’s helping to build a sense of community among its diverse members. His networking connections through the chamber provide him with vast resources; a combined database of knowledge and knowledgeable people, who he can connect to new home buyers for an infinitely smoother transition into the area. He’s even been able to help new residents find employment! As always, Jaimy is a humble servant of the people, and is grateful to be in this position so he can be even more effective in helping the community he loves. Ethan Frelly, agent and broker, is a longtime member of the Beltran Team and also a board chair for the Wilsonville Chamber. He’s been with the Chamber since 2011 and became a board chair in 2020. Similar to Jaimy, he is honored and grateful to have this elevated

Having access to such a tight-knit network of professionals with expertise that runs the gamut, he’s able to connect people and assist his clients in ways he never previously thought possible. Even during a time of COVID, he’s been able to establish new means of communication with both residents and businesses to keep everyone on the same page. Over the last year, he has participated in several endeavors tasked with keeping local businesses alive. Some of those who were in the most desperate need, were literally given free supplies. Ethan, along with other Chamber members, handdelivered boxes of goods to several area restaurants just to help them keep their doors open. Ethan has been very proud of what the Chamber has accomplished during such trying times. They’ve really made a concerted effort to listen to the community; to hear their voices and answer the call in any and every way they possibly could while still following strict safety measures and keeping within CDC guidelines. Although it’s always been a focus of the Chamber, over the past year more than ever, they’ve truly stressed their role as a resource center for all businesses in the community. In many ways, it’s brought everyone together; built stronger bonds. It’s common knowledge that surviving times of trouble together is a great unifier. It’s been a rough road, but Ethan is grateful for the relationships he’s gained along the way. Although he is also looking forward to working with Jaimy towards the common goal of increased in-person networking events, Ethan has been happily working with his fellow board members to come up with successful alternatives. In-person events have been on hiatus for some time now, however Chamber networking events

via Zoom have been surprisingly well attended. They’ve managed to maintain good retention among local businesses. Because Wilsonville has such a strong identity, such a strong spirit and sense of community, they have persevered, and Ethan is happy to be a part of that. In the past some residents have taken issue with the lack of kid-friendly activities in downtown Wilsonville. Ethan certainly recognized the need, and was part of the effort to build the new splash pad among other infrastructural efforts that are soon to come. Ethan, like Jaimy, appreciates the ability to give the kind of service and care to his clients that being a board member of the Chamber provides. These two gentlemen are true ambassadors of the city, both residents and business professionals, addressing deficiencies, maintaining balance, listening to local voices, and affecting positive change.
