It may be a little cliche, but I’m just going to say ... I can not wait to get started on my spring cleaning!
O
ur Christmas decorations are still sitting in totes in the corner of our living room at my house. The kids have outgrown clothes to the point where they have two baskets in each of their rooms; the laundry hamper, and the “Too Small” hamper. And goodness, don’t even look in our kitchen! We received new small kitchen appliances for Christmas and I haven’t found a new home for them just yet.
Spring cleaning has long been a declutter and purge ritual, and these strategies will help get you through your whole house without becoming overwhelmed! For the purge portion of the process, Woodburn is home to many wonderful places to donate gently used items that get purged. This year, I invite you to kill THREE birds with one stone! Declutter your home; make it ready to list; and support our local community. CLEAR SURFACE CLUTTER. Think of how objects impact the look, feel and function of your space.
layer of surface clutter from each space will have a big impact on the look and feel of your whole home. IMPLEMENT A ‘TOUCH IT ONCE RULE.’ Instead of making piles, take things all the way to their home before setting it down so you are only touching it once. PAPERWORK. Mail, school papers, papers to deal with, lists, etc. are easy to leave out on surfaces. Simply dealing with paperwork and keeping it somewhere contained and/or out of sight is a great way to dramatically clear the clutter from a space. The key is to keep up with paperwork, though! [ I’m saying this one as much for you, as a reminder to myself! ] I hope this is a helpful jumpstart to get moving on spring cleaning. Let’s clear the clutter so we can enjoy all that spring in Oregon has to offer!
STORE THINGS OUT OF SIGHT. Declutter first, then organize what made the cut out of sight. Baskets, closets, cupboards all make great hiding space to keep your workspace clear. DO A QUICK CLUTTER SWEEP. Grab a laundry basket and go through each room of your house. Look for all the easy stuff to get rid of. It can be garbage that needs to be tossed, décor items you don’t love or want anymore, things that need to be put away elsewhere, etc. Making quick decisions keeps your emotions out of it. Removing this first
Until we meet, be well.

Big Burger Drive-In By Brad Neuhoff and Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writers
BIG BURGER DRIVE-IN is a 3rd generation locallyowned burger joint opened by the Deardorff family all the way back in 1967, and it’s been a landmark in Molalla ever since. Conveniently located at the intersection of Highways 211 and 213, no matter which direction you come from, it’s the perfect place to stop for a bite… or as the name implies, an enormous mouthful. 54 years since first opening their doors and Big Burger is still a family owned and operated local gem, run with the same values and commitment that they started off with 3 generations ago. Current owner Katy Deardorff AMAZING says it’s business as usual for them, and thanks to their drive thru, not even the chaos of 2020 could put a hitch in their step. “We’ve been around a FLAVORS THAT long time and it’s become an iconic little spot for CAN’T BE Molalla. We have not changed a thing with what FOUND we do here, and people appreciate that.” JUST

will your taste buds dance with delight, but your wallet will be pleasantly surprised by their very affordable prices as well. “It’s cheap and that’s a ANYWHERE! Katy has been proud to take the reins of this burger huge advantage to the customer because you are legacy, which began with her Grandpa Bruce and was still getting a quality burger meal for a cheaper price than followed by her father Alan, who is semi-retired. You could say if you went elsewhere,” says Katy. that she knew it was her destiny; “The whole time through college Depending on the day, they can sell anywhere from 250-300 I was always thinking ‘how could I apply this to Big Burger?’” burgers, which is pretty impressive for a small mom and pop she says, “That is when I was like, yes I want to do this.” establishment located in a small-ish town that’s off the beaten Big Burger’s formula for success is simple: good old fashioned burgers and shakes, made fresh and served with a smile. “It’s kind of in the middle of fast food and sit-down,” Katy says. “It’s better quality than other places.” Take one bite, and you’ll taste that quality. Big Burger’s burgers are far and away better than most any others and they do take a little longer to prepare, but that’s a tradeoff customers are willing to tolerate, because it’s so worth it. The Burgers are, to state the obvious, big, and you can get a Single, Double, or the popular Bacon Triple Cheeseburger all with their legendary homemade sauce and fries. path of I-5. Once you’ve tried it though, you’ll see what all the fuss is about and why people would be willing to drive miles for one of their amazing burgers. “Everything is cooked to order,” Katy explains. “We have not changed it at all. We have been here 50 plus years, so we believe we have nailed it.” For those who may not fancy a traditional burger, they also offer a Vegetarian Burger, as well as Chicken Strips, Fish & Chips, Fried Shrimp, and Clam Strip baskets. Or you can get your fish or chicken on a bun in one of their sandwich baskets. When it comes to sides they have all the usual options, including fries, tater tots, and onion rings, but
LEGENDARY
homemade sauce & fries you won’t be likely to find their Deep Fried Mushrooms or Munchers (cheese stuffed tots) anywhere else. Of course, it wouldn’t be the classic burger joint it is without serving up an amazing milkshake, and the sky is the limit on flavors. The usual choices go without saying, but flavors like Caramel, Cherry, Marshmallow, Peanut Butter, Peppermint, and Pineapple can’t be found just anywhere. There might even be too many options for some people, as Katy illustrates, “I’ve made graveyard shakes where they want every flavor included in one shake!” If that’s a little too crazy for you, they also offer soft serve ice cream, banana splits, sundaes, and deep fried twinkies to satisfy that sweet tooth. Katy is ever conscious of the legacy that she has inherited and she is fully committed to continuing the family
traditions that have made Big Burger such a local treasure for over 50 years. She still works alongside her dad, and hopes to be able to pass the business and traditions down to the next generation as well. “We will see if our little one on the way will take it over and keep it going,” she says hopefully. “I have been around it my whole life and that is what has me emotionally invested. My heart is in it.” Next time you’re passing through Molalla, don’t miss the chance to stop in and get the tastiest burger you could imagine. You’ll probably want to come through town a lot more often! Big Burger Drive-In is located at 31465 OR-213 in Molalla at the intersection of Hwy 213 and Hwy 211. Visit their website at molallabigburger.com to see their menu and give them a call at 503.829.4240 to place an order. ◾

sunshine, beautiful flowers… and the return of insects. That means it’s time to start parasite prevention with your pets. As well as flea and tick treatments, which should be maintained yearround, it’s also wise to be wary of mosquitos as they start to emerge. FLEAS can be a constant plague for pets and humans alike if left untreated. They reproduce quickly, and their eggs can contaminate carpets, upholstery, and bedding, making them extremely difficult to get rid of once they’ve gained a hold. It’s important to keep your pet on a regular flea medication to prevent that from happening. TICKS are often found in forested areas, tall grass, brush, or woodpiles. If you’ll be taking your pet out for hikes or other outdoor adventures, make sure to check them for ticks afterward. If you find a tick, use small tweezers to grab it’s head and gently pull it out. While many flea medications also kill ticks, extra caution is always warranted with these nasty pests, so ask your vet for additional suggestions to prevent ticks. MOSQUITOS may not be in the forefront of your mind when it comes to pet hazards, but these little bloodsuckers do pose a danger to pets in their ability to transmit heartworm larvae. On top of that they’re just darn annoying, so use a pet-safe mosquito repellent (do your research to find the right one!) to keep the beasties away, and consult with your vet about starting heartworm prevention just to be safe. *info from annarboranimalhospital.com

SOUTH END ANTIQUE MALL by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
V
inyl records, vintage clothing, fine china, antique furnishings and decor, tobacco pipes, unique wall art for your “man cave,” century-old hand tools, imported oddities, and more. What does this eclectic mix of items have in common? Not much, other than the fact that most of them have been around for several decades or more, and you can find them all at the South End Antique Mall in Aurora. Opened by Bill and Teresa Nootenboom in May of 2005, the South End Antique Mall’s offerings are as curious and varied as the sprawling building on Highway 99E and its history itself. Built in 1919, many longtime Aurora residents remember the building by its previous use as turkey hatchery. Before that it was a bag factory and, earlier still, a pickle company. “In the process of moving things around out here, I found some of the original Aurora Pickle labels and jars,” says Bill. Teresa got into the business after a career in children’s equine therapy at the Christie School in Marylhurst that spanned two decades. She toyed with the idea of opening her own program but eventually settled on her “second love”: antiques. “It’s really been a successful business, and it’s been a lot of fun,” she says. The mall features 25 to 30 vendors spread out over 18,000 square feet. Because South End had the space, the Nootenbooms decided to make the most of it, eschewing the rigid booths favored by most antique malls and allowing their vendors to spread out a bit more, which facilitates a more “meandering” shopping experience. “We did it a little bit different than a lot of the malls do,” Teresa says. “A little bit bigger spaces, more vignettes instead of the little cubicles.” The extra space also allows for displays of larger pieces than you might find in typical shops, especially furniture, but don’t be surprised if you see a “sold” sticker on something that catches your fancy. “If you walk around, you’ll see a lot of the furniture has sold signs on it; we’re waiting for people to pick it up,” says Bill. “We have a hard time keeping it. It’s good-quality stuff, and as fast as we can get it, it’s going out.” One room is dominated by a life-sized wood sculpture of a horse (a reminder of Teresa’s previous career and lifelong love of horses), which pulls an authentic Portland Wagon Co. wagon most of the time, but during the Christmas season it’s changed to a sleigh. The horse also gets a makeover during other major holidays like Halloween and Valentine’s Day. “I like people and I want them to always feel comfortable when they come into the store,” Teresa says. “We want people to feel welcome. Before COVID, we would always serve cookies and coffee as well. It was always there when you came in. We just want it to be nice and inviting and roomy.” South End holds four major storewide sales each year, and the next one is the Memorial Day Sale happening May 29th - 31st. It’s the biggest sale of the year with 10% off storewide, and they bring out so much inventory that it spills out into the side yard and tents they set up. You won’t want to miss out on all the awesome deals! Come on down and take some time to browse. You never know what kind of treasures you’ll find! South End Antique Mall is located at 21128 Hwy 99E in Aurora. They are open MondaySaturday from 10am-5pm, and Sunday from 11am-5pm. For more information, visit southendantiquemall.blogspot.com. ■

e all have our favorite best-kept local secrets; places we love with a passion, but that we want to protect out of fear they might change. But as long as a business is based on integrity and they hold to that, growth can be a positive change. One such local secret here in Woodburn that absolutely deserves more recognition is Mega Foods! Mega Foods is an independently owned grocery retailer who has been serving the Salem and Woodburn communities for over 30 years. They pride themselves on not only having a vast selection of multicultural grocery products, but also on providing the best customer service experience. In grocery, the focus typically trends more towards price, convenience, and quality of products, but at Mega Foods they also make courtesy and customer satisfaction a top priority. They really listen to their customers, and work towards providing the best shopping experience in the community. Store Director Ken Klein has been in the grocery business for almost 40 years. He started pushing carts as a kid at the Thriftway in Salem, and worked his way up over time

to store manager. He stayed with Thriftway for 14 years until the owners closed that location. From there, Ken went into trucking for a time, but he discovered he really missed grocery. He missed the camaraderie of working with a team, interacting with the public, and the daily rhythm associated with a market. Fortuitously, he discovered that a manager position at Mega Foods was coming available. He had always appreciated the store’s unique personality, their unrivaled variety of goods, and he saw potential for growth within the community. He was hired in 1998, and has been contributing to the success of Mega Foods ever since. Ken understands the importance of integrity, as well as customized service for the local community. Salem and Woodburn are diverse cities and the staff and product lines at Mega Foods clearly reflect that. They carry a huge selection of Hispanic and European grocery products in addition to commonly found brands, and all at incredibly low prices! Ken also wants to make sure their groceries are accessible to everyone. In order to address the specific needs of those without vehicles, Ken implemented a courtesy shuttle program. Anyone needing a ride home just needs

That’s the kind of service Ken and his team at Mega Foods provide! In the past year, they’ve made some significant upgrades with many more to come. In their produce section, they’ve added a new refrigerated case that features premade salads, cut fruit, and other items they were previously unable to carry. They have an all new kitchen with upgraded appliances for cooking all the amazing fresh food they serve in their deli, and by the time you read this, they will have installed a brand new meat case, a new frozen food aisle, and 4 new self-checkout stands. Also in the works for the near future will be on-line ordering for on-site pickup! Exciting changes; all made with an ear to the public and an eye on improved convenience, increased variety, and better overall service for you. Although Ken is quick to give credit to every member of his fantastic team at Mega Foods, one employee in particular has earned a special mention. Carolina, who has been working with Ken since 2001, has garnered a
huge fanbase in the area due to her amazing cooking. Ken stated that some people have become regulars specifically due to the food she serves. She always has something fresh, hot, and delicious on display. Whether it’s tamales, spicy chicken, fried tilapia, or any number of other dishes, people just can’t get enough. Stop by and you’ll soon find out why! Ken believes in giving back to the community as often as possible. Mega Foods is a huge sponsor of some of the biggest events in the area, including The Fiesta Mexicana parade, The Taste of Woodburn, and more. This is a local family owned business, and as such, they sincerely care about the community. Mega Foods exists to serve you, their neighbors, friends, and family. If you haven’t been in, you’re missing out on great products at low prices and great service. You can’t ask for more! Supporting local businesses means supporting your local economy… and how can you go wrong with fresh, hand-made tamales? Mega Foods is located at 1542 Mt Hood Ave, across from Bi-Mart in Woodburn. ountry Meadows Village is the premiere retirement community in Woodburn. Stretching out over nearly 7.5 acres are Independent living cottages, condo-style apartments in the main building, and an assisted living community. The entire village is well thought out and provides amenities and services far above the average independent retirement living experience. Our visit to their property began with an awe-inspiring walk through the main doors into the expansive lobby area boasting an open feel with a huge fireplace and fish tanks taking center stage in a room which could easily equal that of a five-star hotel. We were greeted by the front desk personnel who took the time to confirm our appointment and do the important job of screening us for any current health issues. Contrary to popular belief,

their community is open for visitors and welcomes family and friends to visit the fortunate group of active seniors who choose to make Country Meadows their home. Residents are free to come and go as they please and return to the Village knowing it is well cared for. In this time of concern for the safety and health of everyone it is good to know the level of care being taken to protect both residents and staff. The efforts have paid off over the last year as it may actually be safer to live in a well-run community with strict protocols than elsewhere. 2020 could have been devastating yet the safety record at Country Meadows Village is testament to their dedication and commitment to the lives of their homeowners and staff. You may not see it but there is a dedicated army of staff working behind the scenes to ensure each table, chair, handrail, restroom and dining rooms are kept clean and sanitized at all times.

The entire campus is immaculate and in the latter stages of a million dollar plus upgrade which will include the addition of a sports pub featuring a bar and televisions. The main building is comprised of 96 condominium style apartments which are well thought out and include extra storage not often found in other communities. There are 8 beautiful Cottages each with two bedrooms and a garage as well. The assisted living facility is excellent and has residences for up to 50 people to take advantage of the extra help and care that may be needed. The food at Country Meadows is superb. Residents enjoy all day dining with their friends while being waited on. We have been recipient to the great food as the staff invites community groups to visit and utilize the facility whenever possible. The people who live in the village are active in the community and donate time and resources to many local service clubs and charity causes and have actively supported Lions Club, Kiwanis, Ray of Hope Thrift Store, United Way and charities providing assistance to the victims of last September’s wildfires. It is truly a “Community of Giving.” In addition to their philanthropic desires the community is also active on excursions, classes in crafts such as cardmaking, gardening; and Happy Hour where they can come together to socialize while enjoying a wide selection of top quality spirits, wine and craft beer. Friendships develop at Country Meadows Village as there is so much to live for and participate in. After our visit we are certain the people who live there are happy and living their lives to the fullest while enjoying the comfort and convenience of the active retirement lifestyle. This peek into the community has shown me how the residents at Country Meadows Village are active, living life and safe. Live life again… adventure awaits you at Country Meadows Village! OF SEASONAL INTEREST
Written By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer
H
However this ridiculous day got its start, it gained tremendous popularity during the 18th century throughout Britain and much of Europe, eventually finding its way to various countries around the world.
April Fools’ Day has actually been celebrated in some form for centuries and by many different cultures. The exact origins of the day are not entirely clear, but some speculate that it dates back to the 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar, the new year actually began on or around April first, so as to coincide with the Spring Equinox.
One of the craziest April Fools’ hoaxes of all time was that of the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest in 1957. On April first of that year, the respectable BBC news program Panorama announced that thanks to a mild winter and the elimination of a dreaded creature called the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were celebrating an enormous spaghetti harvest. They even showed footage of Swiss people pulling strands of spaghetti out of trees! The prank was so convincing that many British citizens called in wanting to know how they could get their own spaghetti tree.
ave you ever fallen victim to a crazy prank on the first of April? It’s happened to most of us at one point or another. Did you have to endure more cockamamie shenanigans yet again this year? Don’t feel bad if that’s the case; you’re not the only one. Here is the history behind the day that makes us want to run for cover each spring.
In changing to the Gregorian calendar, the new year moved to January first. Many people, however, were not immediately aware of the change and continued to celebrate in the last week of March leading up to April first. As is still the case today, mockery often follows when one is slow to discover new trends or information, so these poor folks became the butt of jokes and were known as “April Fools.” One particular prank was to put a paper fish on such a person’s back, symbolizing an easily caught fish or a gullible person. Another possible theory about the origins of April Fools’ Day ties it back to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, which is Latin for “joyful.” This celebration took place at the end of March and often involved people dressing up in costumes to disguise themselves, before going around and mocking other citizens and magistrates. Yet another idea is that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox (first day of Spring) in the Northern Hemisphere, and served as a metaphor of sorts for how the forces of nature trick people with their sudden changes at this time of year. 28 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Some pranks are more alarming than funny, though. On the morning of April first, 1974, the town of Sitka, Alaska awoke to find that clouds of black smoke were rising from the crater of Mount Edgecumbe, a long-time dormant volcano. Panic nearly set in, but thankfully it was discovered that a local practical joker, not an angry mother nature, was responsible for the ominous smoke. Porky Bickar was so committed to his April Fools’ stunt that he flew hundreds of old tires into the crater of the volcano and lit them on fire, which I’m sure all of us will agree was a terrible idea, joke or no. When Mount Saint Helens erupted six years later, one victim of his prank wrote Porky to tell him that this time he’d gone too far. Hopefully any pranks that you may or may not have fallen for this year were merely harmless and silly, but remember next year that when April first rolls around again, it’s wise to keep one eye open for tricksters like Porky. *info from history.com and hoaxes.org

RAISED GARDEN BEDS LONG BROS. BUILDING SUPPLY By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer
GARDENING SEASON HAS ARRIVED! If you haven’t already, you’ll want to get your garden started soon and get those early summer crops planted right away. Whether you’re starting a new garden or you want to add to your existing one, you can’t go wrong with raised garden beds. Raised beds not only look nicer and more groomed, but they also allow you to customize the soil more easily from bed to bed, so you can grow an infinite variety of things. Building your own garden beds is significantly cheaper than buying them, and Long Bros. Building Supply has all the materials you’ll need to do just that! With a few simple hand tools and some lumber, you’ll be on your way to having the garden of your dreams!
HERE’S HOW TO GET STARTED First things first - decide how many garden beds you want and what size(s) they will be. It’s recommended to make them no wider than 4 feet so that you can easily reach the middle of the bed without having to walk in it. Also plan to make your beds at least 6 inches deep, which will serve for most plants if the soil is kept nourished, but root vegetables may require more depth.
WE HAVE THE TOOLS & SUPPLIES YOU NEED FOR ALL YOUR SPRING PROJECTS
When it comes to choosing the right lumber, the professionals at Long Bros. will be happy to help you with the decision making process, as there are multiple options to choose from. You can use regular construction lumber, cedar, or composite lumber. There are also many different sizes to choose from, and some of the best options for garden beds are 2x8, 2x10 and 2x12. When you get your lumber home, mark your measurements carefully before cutting the pieces to size. A power miter saw or circular saw will make very nice straight cuts, but if you use a hand saw you’ll need to go very slowly to keep the cut straight. Next you’ll want to pre-drill holes for the screws to keep the wood from splitting. Then use 3 inch deck screws or exterior screws (which won’t rust) to assemble your boxes. It will be much easier if you have an extra pair of hands to keep the pieces straight, or to use a corner clamp. The last step will be to stain or seal your beds. This is worth taking the extra time to do, as untreated wood will deteriorate much faster over time, and your beds will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. You may also want to install welded wire or hardware cloth on the bottom to prevent burrowing rodents from digging up into the bed from below. Once your bed is assembled and complete, be sure to clear any grass out of the area where it will be going, then make sure the bed is levelly placed on the ground. You may also want to add some posts to hold it in place. Then fill it with soil and get gardening! n *info from organiclawndiy.com
