Active Minds FY 2015 Annual Report: Above & Beyond

ANNUAL REPORT I FY 2015

“I’m so glad I joined Active Minds. It is incredibly important to be aware of mental health issues. By educating the community about our struggles, Active Minds is saving lives and ending the marginalization of people who have just as much to share with the world.” - Active Minds chapter member, University of Iowa

A Message from the Active Minds Leadership

Reaching New Heights Dear Friends, It started 13 years ago on one campus with a simple premise: If we can empower students to speak openly about their mental health, we can save lives. And that’s exactly what Active Minds did. Today, we are dramatically expanding our original vision — transforming not only campuses, but communities across the globe. With a network of over 400 chapters — comprised of more than 11,000 student leaders on college and high school campuses in 47 states and three countries — we reached more than 369,000 young adults last year alone with mental health information, trainings, and leadership opportunities. Active Minds is also reaching new heights by influencing mental health reform on a global scale. •

In July 2015, Active Minds was featured in the Sunday edition of The New York Times. A chapter member shared how Active Minds saved her life and gave students on campus a space to talk openly about mental health. Thanks to the article, millions of readers were introduced to our innovative approach and positive impact.

Because of Active Minds’ advocacy, the American Bar Association called for an end to discriminatory use of mental health screenings for people applying for state bar admissions. Active Minds has been a pioneer for this change since 2009, when Theresa Esquerra, an Active Minds Emerging Scholars Fellow, identified which states had unconstitutional mental health disclosure requirements.

Last spring, Active Minds was recognized by the White House and First Lady Michelle Obama when asked to partner on the Campaign to Change Direction, a national mental health awareness initiative.

The transformational change that Active Minds has achieved is compelling testimony to the necessity of our work. With your generous and ongoing support, we are more focused than ever on serving our students and greater community with programs and services that will help them to live happy, healthy, and productive lives. Thank you for helping us change the world — one person, one campus, and one community at a time. Sincerely,

Alison K. Malmon

Bike Across America for Mental Health Dave Romano, a member of the Active Minds Speakers Bureau, embarked on a momentous journey in April 2015. He biked from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC, to raise funds and awareness for Active Minds. After covering more than 3,200 miles and 12 states over 43 days, Dave arrived at his final destination: The Lincoln Memorial. He visited chapters along the way, sharing his own experiences with mental illness and encouraging students to seek help.

Active Minds offered chapter members new mental health training opportunities in 2015. In partnership with the National Council for Behavioral Health, Active Minds provided funding for chapters to participate in Mental Health First Aid trainings for free. Active Minds also partnered with Kognito to provide chapters with access to At-Risk for College and University Students, an online, interactive and evidence-based immersive learning experience. Both opportunities trained students on how to identify when a friend is struggling with mental illness and what to do to help.
