Northern Lights EXPERIENCES •
•
The Northern Lights are particles that are hurled into space after storms on the sun’s surface. They are attracted by the magnetic North Pole (and South Pole) and enter the atmosphere in a ring shaped zone around the poles. In order to see the Northern Lights, it must be dark and clear – so we would never see the Northern Lights between May and August
Visit Tromsø-region disclaim liability for any errors or changes. The editorial deadline was March 2011.

Searching For The Northern Lights In Sommarøy (Sun-Fri)
Northern Lights From The Fjord
After a drive through beautiful coastal landscape arrive at the fishing village of Sommarøy and hunt for the magic lights far removed from the bright city lights and even see the mirror image in the open sea. An overnight stay with dinner and breakfast at idyllic Sommarøy Arctic Hotel is included.
The family-oriented farm of Nordre Hestnes has a superb location beside the fjord with little artificial light and wide sky view, which makes this a very good place to watch for the Northern Lights as well as getting to know a friendly Norwegian family. This tour can be combined with horseback riding (see Horses in Winter landscape).

Tromsø enjoys a costal climate and not too cold winter temperatures. The inland areas a have drier climate with lower temperatures. The average temperature in Tromsø in January is minus 4 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature measured is minus 18,7 degrees Celsius. Between November 21 and January 21, the sun disappears under the horizon and we experience the Polar Nights. The Polar Nights are not completely dark. The twilight is longer than in most places and this combined with snow gives the sky incredible colours when the weather is favourable. Tromsø can get a lot of snow, but it often takes time before it settles. January to April are the best snow months.
