TROMSØ 2014/2015
DAYTIME WINTER ACTIVITIES
WELCOME TO TROMSØ
SNOW SEASON • Snow-dependent activities are available as soon as the snow settles, any time between October and January. • The most stable snow conditions are from middle of December until middle of April. • Big variations from the inland (early snow) to the coast (late snow).
WHALE SEASON • The whales come to this region to feed on herring which have been abundant very near shore and in the fjords the last couple of years. • The season for the winter whale watching varies, depending on when the herring arrive and leave approximately from November to February. • The most common whale species are Humpback, Orca, Pilot whales, Fin whales and the Common Porpoise. • Make use of the light at mid-day during the Polar Night season to go whale spotting.
BOOKING MADE EASY • If you find an activity you really like, make sure to get a place booked in advance before you leave for Tromsø and Northern Norway. • A wide range of options make it possible to book activities after you arrive in Tromsø, either online or at the Tromsø Tourist Information Office.

DOG SLEDDING
Dog sledding is an easy activity that is suitable for everyone, even young children. There are normally two people to a sled, one standing up controlling the direction and speed (known as ‘mushing’) while the other is seated. Some providers require one of the guests to do the mushing, while others provide a guide. In the latter case, you need to inform the provider if you wish to try your hand at mushing. Let the provider know beforehand if you have any relevant health conditions.

SKIING & SNOWSHOEING
If you can walk, you can go snowshoeing, quite simply, a way of walking easily on deep snow. Choose a guided trip or go off exploring on your own. Cross-country skiing is very much a part of North-Norwegian culture. A short lesson is recommended for absolute beginners, while the more experienced can conquer mountains, yes, both up and down.

You are shown how to drill your own hole in the ice, bait the line… and enjoy the thrill of the wait. Be prepared to feel a few degrees colder while on a boat or frozen lake. You will be given an extra outer layer of waterproof clothing to take the chill off, but you still need to dress warmly underneath.
