A f i s h ta l e [ Striped Bass at Nubble Light ]

Text & Photos DANA BENNER

I

T WAS A FOGGY MORNING AS I MADE MY WAY DOWN ROUTE 1A IN YORK. I was heading to Nubble Light to meet up with my good friend Jack Hanley to do some striper fishing. As I made my way

along the coast I was surprised at the number of people out and about at this time of the morning. The tide was coming in (tide charts said about 4:30am) and the waves were rolling up upon the beach as I drove by. Joggers of all ages made full use of the cool morning and deserted sidewalks to get their runs in.

Maine Diner and Remember the Maine Gift Shop With six million customers and counting – appearances on “The Today Show” and raves from the Phantom Gourmet – it takes quite a bit to get the Maine Diner all abuzz. However, in the summer of 2010, The Maine Diner hit another milestone as they were featured on the Food Network program “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” The Maine Diner has been serving delicious food for over 30 years. In addition to the extensive menu selections there are daily specials also made fresh to order. Enjoy chowders and stews, salads, seafood and steaks, comfort foods, burgers and sandwiches, and much more. Try one of their homemade desserts. Breakfast is served anytime! Be sure to visit the Remember the Maine Gift Shop located next to the Maine Diner. In May of 1997, the Gift Shop opened its doors to offer their customers an assortment of gifts from America's favorite Diner, The Maine Diner! Since opening day, Remember the Maine has grown to include gifts not only from the Maine Diner, but Maine memorabilia, collectibles, postcards, gourmet food and so much more—something for everyone.

■■ When you are walking in the woods, stay in the center of the trail so you do not brush up against grasses and bushes where ticks are waiting. ■■ After coming inside from outdoors, wash and dry your clothes to remove the ticks. Be sure to put your clothes in a dryer for approximately one hour—the heat will kill the ticks. ■■ Perform a tick check daily. Some are as small as a poppyseed and can be mistaken for a new freckle or speck of dirt. ■■ Remember, ticks need to feed for at least 24 hours in order to transmit Lyme disease, so quick removal can prevent Lyme disease. But Freeport offers much more than shopping! Check out Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park for hikes along the shore on it’s many ocean trails, and excellent bird watching. And you may find it hard to believe, but among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road, there is a desert. In 1797, the Tuttle family moved to the 300-acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops combined with massive land-clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. If you are a history buff, you can visit Jameson Tavern, built in 1779, and several of the town’s original schools, homes and churches. Check out the demonstrations, exhibits, and walking tours offered by the Freeport Historical Society. the society also hosts several events, including a vintage baseball game, and a barn and quilt tour. TAKE A LEFT TURN OFF OF ROUTE 26 ONTO MAIN STREET IN NORWAY and one of the first things you’ll see is Norway Brewing Company: a seven barrel brewery, taproom, and beer garden. They offer up to seven of their own beers on tap, three different 32 oz. growler fills, and a small list of hand-selected non-alcoholic beverages. With beers like the easy-drinking Green Machine session ale, brewed in collaboration with the Green Machine bike and ski shop, and Mr. Grumpypants, a stout brewed with Maine Grains oats and Coffee By Design Guji coffee, as well as a rotating list of seasonals and one-offs, there is bound to be something to suit the palate of any beer lover! In addition, the kitchen puts out a select but varied menu of gastropub fare made with locally produced ingredients. The 30-seat taproom is open year-round, but the beer garden is the place to be this summer, with plenty of seating in both the sun and shade. Norway Brewing is also a proud sponsor of the first ever Foothills Food Festival on Saturday, August 13th, a celebration of Maine-made food and drink that will feature food vendors, a

The Green Machine Bike Shop is now proud to have re-opened this historic building with their expanded sales & service department. It’s well worth the ride to Norway to check out their inventory and it’s cool Historic Building If you don’t want to ride alone, The Green Machine Bike Shop offers weekly group bike rides! Wednesdays Road Bike Ride leaves the bike shop at 5:15 p.m. Friday’s Mountain Bike ride leaves the bike shop at 5:15 p.m. as well. After licensing Rock Harbor Brewing Co., the brewing began and by October the first pints were poured Since October Dan has made three different IPAs, an ESB, a Pale Ale and two stouts. His only previous experience in brewing was 10 years of home brewing, but through research and experimenting he has been able to create brews that people at Rock Harbor Pub & Brewery are loving.

Very good meal, loved the place. Leaving today after the best breakfast. Thank you for the great food and excellent service. We will be back!

Not only did we have a great breakfast and service while we were there, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful when I realized from 3.5 hours away that I had left my wallet there and they mailed it to me in a speedy manner. Thank you so much, I can’t wait to enjoy another meal next time I’m in town!

REWORGY FAMILY ORCHARDS offers an authentic, Maine family farm experience for guests of all ages. The farm has been owned and run by the Treworgy family for over 30 years. Today there are four generations and over 20 members of the family who work on the farm. From the youngest to the oldest, they welcome you to enjoy everything from the pick-your-own fruits and vegetables to the corn maze, petting zoo, and concert series. One of Treworgy’s most famous attractions is the annual corn maze, which is the longest continually run of its kind in Maine. Each maze, created and designed by the Treworgy family, is a beautiful work of art when seen from the air and a delight for families who traverse it on the ground, making their way through the interactive riddles and puzzle as they go. This year’s design, “St. George and the Dragon,” features a fiery dragon facing a brave knight on a horse. Check Treworgy’s Facebook page in August to see Aerial pictures of this monster. The corn maze opens each year at the beginning of August.

Just a short walk from the corn maze, Treworgy’s pick-your-own fields and orchard are a perennial favorite. Fruits and vegetables simply taste better when you pick them yourself, and nothing says “Maine summer” like freshly picked blueberries and strawberries. For autumn attractions, Treworgy offers Macintosh, Cortland, Macoun, Liberty, and Gala varieties for picking. Find the perfect pumpkin in the enormous pumpkin patch with over 60 varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds in every shape, color and size you can imagine. Treworgy’s website is a great pre-visit resource to determine

what’s ready for picking and how to extend the experience at home with projects and recipes. Also in the fall, they have hayrides or horse-drawn farm tours — led by Treworgy’s famous twin horses, Fred and Fran, from which visitors can take in the scenic views and hear the history of the farm. (Bring your camera for some amazing family moments.) And don’t forget the goats in the petting zoo! Treworgy’s award-winning dairy goats are a family favorite and available for petting and feeding.

Refreshments are available in the farm shop and cafe, along with a wide selection of Maine-made gifts: jams, jellies, preserves, crafts and farm-themed toys. Check the website for popular outdoor concert series with some of the area’s best bluegrass and folk musicians. Whether you come for a quick bag of apples, a pie, a concert, or to spend the day — the Treworgy family is always glad to see you, and they are ready to make your time at the farm something you’ll always remember.

To round out your trip, plan a lunch in the cafe or enjoy some ice cream and donuts.

NOWN AS THE “PRETTIEST VILLAGE IN MAINE,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor,

Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. An Unforgettable Maine Experience

BURNT ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE 78 summer / fall | 2016

Boothbay Railway Village

By late 1963, George McEvoy, just 27 years old, was amassing a collection of railroad memorabilia that filled the family home in Grafton, Massachusetts and it appeared that their Southport, Maine summer cottage was about to succumb to the same fate. He had to find a place to store his collection. In May of 1965, the then Boothbay Railway Museum opened to the public for the first time, making it the first public railroad museum in Maine. Later that summer when the steam engine arrived and was put into service it was the first narrow gauge train to run in Maine for nearly three decades and the only passenger rail service in Maine for nearly two more decades. Today when you visit the Museum you’ll learn about how technologies like steam engines and the automobile changed life along the coast of Maine between 1850 and 1950. In addition to a ride in a vintage coach behind a 100 year old steam locomotive, the Museum also occasionally offers rides in one of it’s Ford Model Ts. Two of the most popular attractions are the pair of resident goats who delight visitors of all ages with their antics. From a display of hundreds of salt & pepper shakers to a collection of engines that powered everything from small boats to whole factories, there truly is something for everyone in your family here. Visit the Museum’s website at RailwayVillage.org to learn more about this special Maine place.
