MIDCOAST maine

EXTENDING FROM BRUNSWICK TO ROCKLAND, Midcoast Maine offers a quiet, pastoral setting, as well as a rocky, rugged coastline. Scenic bays, craggy peninsulas and sparkling islands, picture-perfect fishing villages, historic forts and lighthouses, seaside resorts and bustling harbor towns all comprise this region.

Fishing and ship building sustained the area for centuries. You can easily delve into Maine’s maritime past that’s enhanced by a visit to the Maine Maritime Museum.

Maine Maritime Museum is located on a 20-acre waterfront campus in historic Bath, the “City of Ships,” just 20 minutes from Freeport; 1 mile off of Route 1. We offer daily lighthouse and nature cruises, trolley tours, indoor and outdoor galleries, lots of hands-on family fun, a pirate playship, lobster exhibit, and more. Sail aboard the 1906 schooner Mary E, the oldest Maine-built fishing vessel still afloat. Explore the buildings of the Percy & Small Shipyard, the country’s last surviving shipyard where large sailing vessels were built. And don’t miss Into the Lantern: A Lighthouse Experience, a one-of-a-kind immersive exhibit that recreates the sensation of standing high atop a lighthouse through 180-degree video projections. For more information, visit MAINEMARITIMEMUSEUM.ORG or call 207-443-1316.

Enjoy cool summer breezes and vistas of sparkling blue water as you explore the area by foot, bike, or sea kayak. Expect quiet roads, gentle rolling hills and secluded beaches. View a sunrise on the Bay. Eat fresh eggs from a local farm. Watch bald eagles, ospreys, and terns along the coast. Explore the prehistoric oyster shell mounds along river beds. See the harbor seals next to Fort Popham. Browse through an antique shop.

Go on a puffin tour, whale watch, or sport fishing trip. Purchase art directly from an artisan. Catch a ferry to one of the islands or hike Mount Battie in the Camden Hills. Take an afternoon cruise on a two-masted schooner. Stroll through the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, where there are always interesting textures, shapes, and colors to be seen from the many trails.

Life in the Midcoast operates at a slower pace and yet there is so much to do. The sea air will whet your appetite as you realize this is the way life should be. .

This is Maine’s first and ONLY dedicated outdoor laser tag venue! It plays like “paintball” but without the “hurt.”

Gorilla Tactics is NOT your “bang-bang shoot ‘em up glow in the dark laser tag!” Strategic “missions” are carried out and may the best team win!
