PREPARING YOUR HOLIDAY SECURITY As with any time you are planning to leave your home for a few days or weeks, you need to remember the importance of home security. The last thing you want after a wonderful break away is to find your house in disarray and your personal property stolen. If you intend to be away for an extended period, it is a good idea to let your neighbours know the property will be vacant and give them numbers to call in case of any emergency. If you are a tenant you should also inform your Property Manager if you will be away for more than a few days. Some other practical suggestions include:
• Cancel newspapers and any other home deliveries.
• Double check that all windows are closed and locked, and that deadlocks are activated on the doors.
• Set timers for lights to come on for a couple of hours as they would if you were at home.
• Place a wooden rod or metal bar in the track of your sliding windows and doors, so that even if the locks are picked the thief still can’t slide them open. • Lock all external areas such as garages, workshops and sheds. • Lock everything up the night before, particularly if you are leaving early in the morning - this will make your departure easier and quicker. • Set alarm systems if you have them. • Put valuables in a safety deposit box, or leave them with friends or family who have a safe. • Don’t boast about your holiday plans on social meda. • Remove the spare key from its ‘secret’ hiding place. • Ask a neighbour or friend to collect the mail and keep your letterbox free of ‘junk’ mail. Consider getting the post office to hold mail if you will be away for a while.
• Set a timer on a radio so that it switches on and off at a specified time creating the effect that somebody is home. • Ask a neighbour or friend to park a car in your driveway every now and then. • Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your house and report any suspicious activity. • Put some old clothes or linen on the clothesline. • Organise for someone to maintain the yard if you think the property will have an unlived-in look while you are away. And remember your insurance – make sure it is up to date! Tenants in particular are at risk as they are much less likely than homeowners to have home contents insurance. Many tenants assume that the landlord’s insurance will cover their belongings - it doesn’t, so they need to have their own insurance. ACTON Rockingham hope you have a safe and happy holiday season.
