yourself

Unwind in Canberra, a city in a park that changes with the seasons and offers an array of unexpected delights.

Delve further and you can actually meet a cheetah at the National Zoo & Aquarium or be greeted by one of our many local winemakers at their cellar door and sample the fruits of their labour.

Canberra’s famed national attractions hold the story of our nation. Discover Phar Laps’ heart, an original FJ Holden and the journey of our Indigenous people at the National Museum of Australia. Take a behind-the-scenes tour with an elite athlete at the Australian Institute of Sport and feel the courage of our Anzacs at the Australian War Memorial’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. See our country and people through the eyes of artists, and experience Australian character through sound, film and engaging exhibitions. It’s all here in the nation’s capital.

This modern city offers fun for the kids and a busy calendar of events and festivals — like Floriade, Australia’s celebration of spring, where glorious spring blooms erupt in tune with bright blue skies. An array of stylish restaurants, bars and shops are at your doorstep and for those more adventurous our scenic natural surrounds await you. But don’t just take our word for it ... c’mon ... see for yourself.

History

Location

Located on the ancient lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people, Canberra’s name is thought to mean ‘meeting place’, derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra. European settlers first came in the 1830s, and the area was chosen for the federal capital in 1908. Canberra’s special contrast of nature and urban living was planned in 1912 by Canberra’s master designer, Walter Burley Griffin, a Chicago architect who won an international design competition. The provisional Parliament House was opened in 1927 in what was then a treeless paddock. More information on Canberra’s history at nationalcapital.gov.au

Canberra is 282 kilometres from Sydney, 150 kilometres inland from the east coast and 571 metres above the Pacific Ocean.

FAST FACTS

Weather

Retail shopping hours

The national capital’s four distinctive seasons, each with their own beauty and charm turn the city into a kaleidoscope of colour throughout the year.

Monday to Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

is truly glorious. The city bursts into colour as the trees reveal their spring blooms, bright blossoms erupt and the regional vineyards awaken with the first bud bursts. You can expect moderately fresh mornings, bright sunny days and crisp clear nights.

Hours vary at smaller shopping centres and in the nearby city of Queanbeyan.

SPRING

offers endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, especially on Lake Burley Griffin where plenty of water sports and activities await. The days are warm to hot, with plenty of sunshine and little humidity and are followed by mild balmy nights.

SUMMER

is a special time as the city’s parks and gardens evolve. Leaves of red, gold, russet, ochre and crimson emerge and are balanced by the soft greys and greens of native eucalyptus and coniferous trees alongside them. The season is blessed with cool nights and warm days.

AUTUMN

days are crisp and cool, with clear blue skies that stretch on forever. Indoors or outdoors, you’re never short of things to see and do. Open fires and fabulous food, wine treks, art galleries or snow trips, treats for mind, body and soul.

Marvel at thousands of objects that represent Australia’s history and cultural heritage. See famous Australian icons such as Phar Lap’s heart and Captain Cook’s teacup, and reminisce about the way Australian life used to be with the Holden prototype car number one, and a pink Propert caravan from the 1950s. There’s the quirky — like Dame Edna Everage’s glasses and the Wiggles’ Skivvies — and the emotive, like the Gallery of First Australians which has the largest collection of Aboriginal bark paintings.

SeIendigenous culture

Thousands of years before European settlement, the Ngunnawal people lived in the Canberra region and often met with other language groups, such as the Ngarigo, Wiradjuri, Wolgalu and Yuin, to participate in special ceremonies and to feast on Bogong moths which migrated through the area.

38

These were some of the main tribal groups that used the mountains for ceremonial purposes such as initiation, marriage and trade of resources. Today, Canberra’s name is thought to mean ‘meeting place’, derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra.

See our heritage. The Canberra region had a rich Aboriginal and farming heritage long before Australia’s early politicians thought of choosing the area for the new federal capital in the early 1900s. From this time onwards, as its oldest properties were acquired by the government, the area’s rural heritage became intertwined with its history as a purpose-built capital.

History

National Capital Exhibition

Located on the lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people, Canberra’s name is thought to mean ‘meeting place’, derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra. European settlers first came in the 1830s, and the area was chosen for the federal capital in 1908. Canberra’s special contrast of nature and urban living was planned in 1912 by Walter Burley Griffin, a Chicago architect who won the international design competition to design the capital. The provisional Parliament House was opened in 1927 in what was then a treeless paddock. More information on Canberra’s history at nationalcapital.gov.au

The National Capital Exhibition beside Lake Burley Griffin tells the story of how Canberra, one of the world’s only modern purpose-built cities, was named, designed and built through an impressive light show, displays and film. Nearby, the Captain Cook Memorial Jet shoots water more than 140 metres into the air, and the National Carillon bell tower on Aspen Island can be heard chiming across the lake.
