FURNITURE DESIGN AND FABRICATION THE ISA CHAIR Beginning with preliminary concept sketches, then to computer modeling and sketching a series of full scale 1:1 drawings, prototypes of the ISA chair were made using cardboard and foam. Using foam models to decide on a form, a wood prototype was made to test the feel, comfort and angles of the chair. Walnut, with a simple Danish oil rub as the finish, was chosen as the final medium of the ISA chair.

FURNITURE DESIGN AND FABRICATION THE ISA DESK The design for the ISA Desk began as an exploration of using conventional hardware devices - like drawer slides - in unexpected ways.

Soft close drawer slides are used to pull the tops of the desk apart from the center, presenting a work surface on the inside. A red laminate is used for the top of the surface adding a surprising pop of color, also complementing the cherry veneer.

MESA DESIGN GROUP As an architectural intern for the Urban Design and Planning Studio, I championed new ideas in the graphic representation of land-use plans to urban design architectural features. The ability to develop successful large scale master plans, from the Dallas Arts District to full-scale community master plans, taught me the critical connections between a city’s built environment and its quality of life. Mesa gifted me the ability to look at an environment from holistic point of view - that a city is an organism, actively changing and adapting due to many forces.

GRADUATE STUDIES SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO THESIS WORK: TUNING ENVIRONMENTS “The question is no longer whether digital technology is a good or bad thing for design; it is rather about the direction architecture is taking under its influence.” -Antoine Picon The techniques of architectural drawing and the fabrication of those drawings have reached a unique confluence. Digital technology has advanced to the point where the “drawing” is no longer a static document that regulates the building process; now it also can become a flexible script or program for carrying out the work itself. Architects have the expertise of drafting their designs where the product produced is a document, rather than a building. As a consequence, there are deviations from the document to the actual constructed building, such as human error and budget compromises. While digital drawing tools allow architects to explore complex forms of geometries, digital machines like the 3-D printer can fabricate building elements in a manner that minimizes error between drawing and fabrication, essentially closing the gap between design documents and building. If coupled with current manufacturing techniques, the 3-D printing machine allows for the custom parts to be fabricated in conjunction with discrete building parts. This overcomes the challenge of fabricating customized parts or one-offs, because it is the digital drawing that dictates the fabricated piece, not an industrialized assembly line. Through the application of these digital tools, architects can directly produce buildings rather than the intermediary static documents. Tuning Environments is derived from this research of additive manufacturing techniques. Compared to conventional manufacturing techniques like casting and molding, the layering of extruded materials has the ability to create objects free from form-work as well being precise, customized, varied and complex. With this in mind, here acoustics becomes the framework in which to begin questioning both the design process for architecture and the capacity of the additive manufacturing technique. During the research of acoustics, it was discovered that earthenware pots were used in Medieval churches in Europe as a technique thought to increase the resonance in a church. For example, it could amplify a six-person choir enough to sound like a forty-person ensemble. Through investigation and experimentation, this idea of resonance and the advantages of the 3D printing device and acoustical panels was hatched, tested and theoretically applied to urban environments.

GRADUATE STUDIES SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO STUDIO PROJECTS CINEMA CITY Chicago, IL As a popular form of entertainment, film continues to create an immersive experience for audiences. Film has the power to transfrom the viewers surroundings and take them through any emotional ride from amazement, shock, wonder and even horror. Traditionally films are projected onto a screen on stage, housed in a theater with seats, isles and balconies. But as technology advances, the forms of media and entertainment have also evolved and so has the setting. Anyone can view films from the local movie theater down the street, in the comfort of their own homes, or even during a family road trip in the backseat of a car. The challenge in this project is to create a cinema that can match the range of human emotion to that of a film and create the setting of how the film is viewed.
