PBS’ original drama Mercy Street is inspired by true stories from Alexandria’s Civil War history. Today visitors to Alexandria can experience the Mercy Street story up close at the historic sites where the real-life soldiers, doctors and nurses depicted in the series lived out divided loyalties and moral dilemmas during the longest Union occupation of any city during the war. The six-episode series takes viewers beyond the battlefield and into the lives of Americans on the Civil War home front.

O F FI C I AL V I SI TO RS G UIDE TO AL E XANDRIA, VIRG INIA During “First Thursday” seasonal events, a new festival takes to the streets each month, attracting visitors and locals alike in search of family fun and a splash of culture. On the north side of the neighborhood, find Arlandria—also popularly known as Chirilagua for the El Salvadoran village where many of this area’s residents claim family ties. Small shops and restaurants with an international flavor line the streets, in addition to legendary music hall The Birchmere.

WEST END

OLD TOWN

A beautifully preserved historic district on the Potomac River, Old Town Alexandria is the heart of the city. Today its cobblestone streets and red brick sidewalks hum with an energy that attracts everyone from politicos to pet lovers. Some of the city’s top-rated restaurants, shopping, arts events and historic sites pack the area. King Street, Old Town’s main thoroughfare, is a walkable mile of shops, restaurants and outdoor cafes. Take in historic architecture and attractions, including the museums on Market Square and a few hidden gems. By day, this area bustles with museum-goers, art enthusiasts and shoppers. At night, bars and lounges buzz with live music and visitors sipping local brews or craft cocktails. Old Town is anchored in the west by the George Washington Masonic Memorial and in the east by the Potomac River waterfront, where you’ll find restaurants with river views, the renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center and opportunities to see the region by boat. The King St-Old Town Metro Station links Old Town with Washington, D.C., via a 15-minute train ride. Find bike share stations, taxis and the free King Street Trolley in this multi-modal transit hub.

DEL RAY

“Where Main Street still exists,” Del Ray features the made-for-strolling Mount Vernon Avenue lined with independent stores, health and wellness boutiques, cafes and an ever-increasing number of restaurants. Eclectic shops and signature events like Art on the Avenue lend an King Street artsy vibe to the area.

This colorful area is home to the city’s acclaimed Port City Brewing Company, recently named the “Best Small Brewery in America” at the Great American Beer Festival. The brewery offers tours and tastings, plus regular events. Civil War history is honored at the Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site, which can be paired with a visit to the tranquil Winkler Botanical Preserve, 44 acres of plants and trees indigenous to the Potomac River valley.

CARLYLE

In the southwestern part of the city, Carlyle is Alexandria’s contemporary counterpoint to historic Old Town. Known as the “economic engine of Alexandria,” with scores of businesses taking root here, the neighborhood celebrates the spirit of American innovation. The U.S. Patent and Trademark office is located here with its National Inventors Hall of Fame—and a nearby resto-bar, Trademark Eat+Drink in the Westin Hotel, which nods to its “close friends” at the office. The National Science Foundation plans to open its headquarters in 2017, adding speed to Carlyle’s forward momentum. Meanwhile, residents and visitors find a distinctive mix of old and new, from popular barbecue spot Sweet Fire Donna’s to afternoon picnics, music festivals and more at John Carlyle Square Park.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN 2016 THIS YEAR BRINGS EXCITING NEW VENUES, PLUS A TV SHOW INSPIRED BY THE CITY’S RICH PAST. Carlyle House

Go Behind the Scenes Tour the historic sites and discover the real people behind the new PBS TV drama “Mercy Street”—a series set in Alexandria and based on true stories from the Civil War’s home front.

Try New Restaurants Take in the warm ambiance at Magnolia’s, where the menu touts Southern comfort food like fried chicken and collard greens. Get a taste of California at Sonoma Cellar, where a husband-and-wife duo pours wines in a historic space. At Carluccio’s, savor a meal on the patio, or grab Italian goodies to go. Feast on New York strip and crispy frites at Hunting Creek. Blackwall Hitch plates seafood dishes in a nautical-themed space, where musicians play nearly every night.

Carluccio’s

Browse New Boutiques At Curated, find cozy throws, artful cards, T-shirts, jewelry, and wall art—all handmade by independent designers. For products that pamper, such as bath bubbles, body scrubs, creams and oils, head to Ladyburg Bath and Body Apothecary.

Play Sleuth Wannabe detectives band together to solve brain teasers, decode riddles and break out of a locked space at Escape Room Live Alexandria, the international entertainment phenomenon Time magazine calls “a Rubik’s cube that locks the door behind you.”

Explore Braddock In this up-and-coming neighborhood, Mason Social is the definition of hyperlocal: the American eatery is owned and operated by four Alexandria residents. Dog lovers warm their hearts and satisfy their appetites at Lost Dog Cafe, whose profits benefit animal rescue. For fine dining, head to French restaurant Bastille. If you’re still hungry, stop by Sugar Shack to end the day on a sweet note.

THE DISH ON The Washington Post, Food & Wine, Southern Living and The New York Times praise Alexandria for its buzz-worthy cuisine scene—and local politicos and celebrities agree.

A

cross the city, chef-driven restaurants serve up gourmet cuisine and global fare, bars and lounges pour award-winning cocktails, and independent sweet shops and cafes deliver signature flavors.

Local Favorites

Many restaurants here have earned a loyal following from resident foodies. In Old Town, try fine Belgian cuisine with a modern twist at BRABO by Robert Wiedmaier—a go-to spot for mussels (pictured, next page)—or its sister space, BRABO Tasting Room, for samplings of cheese and charcuterie. Just steps from Old Town’s scenic waterfront, Chadwicks draws crowds with fresh seafood and a rotating menu of comfort food (think meatloaf and spaghetti with meatballs). Called “half Southern restaurant, half neighborhood watering hole” and the “Cheers” of Alexandria, Southside 815 delivers on neighborhood charm with events like crab and shrimp boils and nonstop local sports on TV. At Trademark

10

Eat+Drink, happy hour means beer flights and handcrafted cocktails like the “Fire in the Rye,” with cream sherry, Fernet Branca, bitters and habanero-infused ice. Local favorites also channel delicious (and authentic) global flavors. For tastes of Vietnam, Caphe Bahn Mi touts its namesake sandwiches and steamy bowls of pho. RT’s Restaurant, known for its all-out Mardi Gras celebrations, specializes in Creole-inspired seafood. Cooks at Bombay Curry Company serve classic Indian curries and kabobs, plus a Sunday buffet. For hearty English breakfasts of bangers and mash, cozy afternoon sips by a fire or bagels and freshly roasted coffee on-the-go, regulars head to Extra Perks.

Liquid Assets

In quiet lounges and lively sports bars, enjoy local brews or artfully crafted cocktails from award-winning mixologists. Offering tours and tastings of its seasonal suds, Alexandria’s

VisitAlexandriaVA.com

beloved Port City Brewing Company is great for groups, and it hosts regular events like beer yoga, food truck days, live music and trivia nights. At Jackson 20, named after the “notoriously social” president, choose from a long list of craft beers in bottles, in cans and on draft. The Green Dragon Pub at Bilbo Baggins claims one of the city’s largest beer selections with 12 taps and more than 100 bottled brews—plus seasonal cocktails and international wines. Medieval-themed John Strongbow’s Tavern delights history buffs with a time warp complete with specialties like the “Meadmosa” and “The Dragon’s Kiss,” plus regular wine and mead tastings. Social media buzz surrounds Captain Gregory’s, a 22-seat speakeasy behind a hidden door inside doughnut shop Sugar Shack. Text 571/281-0059 for a reservation, then pull on a nautical whiskey flag for a low-key entry.

HISTORIC SETTINGS

In contemporary restaurants, visionaries give new life to buildings with storied pasts. Award-winning Virtue Feed + Grain is aptly named, with a nod to its former function as an 18th-century granary. Today, chefs there source meat from local farms and produce from the Old Town Farmers Market. Built in 1883 to house the Columbia Steam Engine Company, the well-preserved Columbia Firehouse is a four-story brasserie and barroom that evokes a 19th-century members-only club. Newly opened in an 1810 historic home, Sonoma Cellar brings a laid-back, California vibe to the heart of Old Town with a tasting room, bistro and landscaped backyard garden. A local favorite since 1976, Landini Brothers channels old-world class with homemade, Tuscan-style pasta, fresh seafood and an impressive wine list.

DINNER AND A SHOW

Legendary music venues like The Birchmere may host big-name acts in Alexandria, but bars and restaurants also draw crowds with

performers every night of the week. Murphy’s Irish Pub features traditional Gaelic music nightly, while 219 Restaurant offers live blues bands, a DJ spinning downstairs and a cigar room upstairs. Catch live music most nights (and karaoke on Sundays) at The Light Horse Restaurant, where locals gather for pool and shuffleboard, plus NFL and college football games. Four nights a week, Blackwall Hitch showcases the talent of local or touring musicians from a range of genres.

SUGAR RUSH

Sweet-toothed visitors get their fix at Alexandria candy shops, ice cream parlors, bakeries and chocolatiers. Rediscover old favorites and explore new tastes at The Sugar Cube, where every inch of counter, shelf and wall space bursts with sweets, from delicate truffles and homemade fudge to imported licorice and Haribo gummies. At Blüprint Chocolatiers, design meets decadence in flavors like Thai curry and passion fruit. Artfully crafted in a basement laboratory, the chocolates are then displayed like fine jewelry in a chic street-level space. In addition to classics like red velvet and vanilla, Lavender Moon Cupcakery dreams up originals like buttermilk with Mexican chocolate pudding, lemon-lavender chiffon and maple sweet potato, rotating daily and incorporating seasonal ingredients. The scent of fresh doughnuts perfumes the air over Henry Street, thanks to The Sugar Shack, where Facebook fans who’ve completed a “task of the day” score freebies in flavors like maple bacon and glazed cinnamon roll. The ice cream experts at Kilwins dole out their famous scoops and other treats like banana splits, fudge and candy apples. At family-owned gelateria Casa Rosada, its name and bright pink facade inspired by Argentina’s executive mansion, indulge in homemade flavors like dulce de leche and crema rusa—a rich walnut and marsala wine base studded with walnuts.

PATIOS & PORCHES IN WARMER MONTHS, MANY RESTAURANTS OPEN THE DOORS TO THEIR INVITING ALFRESCO SPACES.

Evening Star Cafe A pop-up extension of Mount Vernon Avenue’s Evening Star Cafe, the Front Porch draws passersby with its backyard barbecue atmosphere, complete with Adirondack chairs, pork sliders and juicy ribs—plus the casual spot’s much-buzzed-about slushies made with bourbon. Del Ray Cafe is a year-round favorite for its local, organic foods and baguettes imported from France. But during the summertime, the screened-in, wraparound porch makes a great spot for enjoying dinner, coffee and crepes or the cafe’s Wine Wednesdays.

Daniel O’Connell’s Named for an Irish patriot, Daniel O’Connell’s provides a cozy cold-weather retreat with wood paneling, old-world antiques and blazing fires. When temperatures rise, diners choose from outdoor tables downstairs or on the intimate upstairs patio. At Fish Market, the balcony is a breezy spot for fresh fillets, sandwiches like the Key Largo (grilled or blackened mahi mahi) or traditional crab cakes. Hunting Creek’s King Street location in the heart of Old Town means prime peoplewatching from the patio while enjoying steak frites and wine. Stop in for dinner or happy hour, when specials offer deals on bottles of wine.

ANOTHER MAJOR DRAW FOR BOTH VISITORS AND LOCALS? ALEXANDRIA’S STATUS AS A DOG-LOVING CITY. PROOF: MORE THAN HALF OF HOTELS HERE ARE PET FRIENDLY.

leash-free frolicking. North of the Torpedo Factory, dogs romp at Founders Park, nearly five riverside acres prime for picnicking. (Grab a meal to-go from one of Old Town’s eateries.) Near several pet-friendly hotels, Montgomery Park has a fenced dog run and a children’s playground. On S. Union Street, Windmill Hill Park offers an off-leash area, volleyball courts, swings for kids and riverside docks for exploring.

reveals no shortage of green space, sidewalk water bowls and free treats for pooches. Specialty shops, day cares, even river cruises and city tours cater to furry friends.

Morrison House and Hotel Monaco, place no restrictions or fees on four-legged guests. In fact, USA Today readers ranked Hotel Monaco, home of the Doggy Happy Hour from April through October, among America’s most pet-friendly lodgings. Other dog-welcoming spots include the Westin in Carlyle, Sheraton Suites, Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, the Holiday Inn and the Residence Inn in both Carlyle and Old Town.

WHAT TO DO A stroll down bustling King Street, Old Town’s charming main drag, means regular stops for water and treats. (Principle Gallery keeps a treat stash at the checkout counter.) Bring dogs along for an educational walking tour of the city with Footsteps to the Past. For a leisurely glide on the river with picturesque monument views, hop on a Canine Cruise with Potomac Riverboat Company. Dogs ride for free, the wind in their fur, on these outings held monthly from May through September. Alexandria’s first “canine sports club,” Frolick Dogs invites owners to sign up for courses with their dogs or drop dogs off for boarding. Experts here develop Fido’s fitness with treadmills, balance equipment and an agility course. Torpedo Factory Art Center, the converted munitions factory dedicated to artists’ studios and galleries, is a must-see for art lovers—and a welcoming space for pups. Find gifts and souvenirs at The Dog Park boutique, catering to cats and dogs with whimsical collars, bowls, toys and unique items like hand-knit wool sweaters and holiday-themed gifts. Your Dog’s Best Friends is a full-service day care with an on-site boutique selling leashes, tools and toys. 12

WHERE TO EAT Many restaurants open their patios to pups. Score an outdoor table—and award-winning French food—at Bastille, or head to Chadwicks for happy hour bites. Alexandria menus include eats for dogs, too. Bittersweet Catering serves “pupcakes” to four-legged customers. At old-fashioned frozen custard parlor Dairy Godmother in Del Ray, chowhounds cool down with yogurt Puppy Pops. On the colorful patio at Buzz Bakeshop, enjoy coffee, pastries, cakes, cookies and pies, while your dog savors his or her own treats. SPECIAL EVENTS Year-round events in Alexandria not only welcome dogs—they let them steal the show. Thousands of people line the streets for December’s annual Scottish Christmas Walk parade, as more than 100 marching units play bagpipes, beat drums and dance on their way to Market Square. The main attraction for dog lovers? Dozens of terriers in Scottish tartans prancing down the street. At Hotel Monaco’s annual Doggy Howl-o-ween Costume Contest, a benefit for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, canines strut the “dogwalk,” as humans sip Flying Dog and Dogfish Head beers. For more than 30 years, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade has hosted an annual Fun Dog Show, where contestants vie for coveted awards like Best Tail Wag, Best Irish Costume and Best Owner/Dog Lookalike.

Romance a little

With picturesque river views and cobblestone streets providing the perfect backdrop for a romantic day or night out, it’s no wonder Washingtonian magazine considers Alexandria the “best place for a first date.”

L

ooking for date ideas on a budget? This town has a long list of free (and almost-free) activities. Marking a special occasion? Upscale restaurants help you celebrate, while hotels and spas offer luxurious accommodations that pamper.

Great Dates

Riverside paths in Old Town invite long walks in spring, summer and fall. For an afternoon picnic, swing by Society Fair to pick up some tasty ready-made dishes. Or stroll Captain’s Row, the 100 block of Prince Street lined with Federal-style row houses dating from the 1700s. For unparalleled views of the city, ascend to the observation deck at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. (Tip: Aim for a late afternoon tour to catch “golden hour” lighting over the river.) Gallery hop in Old Town to see paintings, drawings, sculpture and pottery from international and local artists. To glimpse dozens of artists at work, stop by the Torpedo Factory Art Center—the World War II-era building is open to the public daily at no charge. Explore historic sites that hold surprising beauty. Tour three museums within one block of Market Square, including the lush backyard garden at Carlyle House, the former home of a city founder. Catch live music at a number of bars and restaurants: La Tasca’s dancers inspire with weekly flamenco shows, and Hard Times Café hosts one of the city’s many regular open mic nights. Check the calendar at legendary music hall The Birchmere for headlining musicians and up-and-comers.

Tables for Two

Husband-wife chef team Christophe and Michelle Poteaux have made Parisian brasserie Bastille one of the city’s most beloved restaurants. A revolving menu highlights locally sourced, farm-fresh ingredients in dishes like red winebraised lamb shoulder and scallops with a chorizo crumble. Voted one of the town’s most romantic restaurants by local diners, La Bergerie sets the scene with ornate chandeliers, exposed brick and cozy half-moon booths. On the menu of

Old Town Alexandria

classic French dishes: onion soup smothered with melted Gruyère, plus tenderloin with potatoes and truffle croquettes. For an intimate night on the town, duck into BRABO Tasting Room and enjoy the variety of wines, or head to the speakeasy-style bar PX, open when the blue light glows around the corner from Eamonn’s, A Dublin Chipper. Keeping it casual? Get a table at Misha’s, a local favorite for light eats and fresh coffee served in cheery orange mugs. At Killer ESP on King Street, baristas whip up specialty drinks like affogatos—hot espresso over creamy gelato.

It’s a Celebration

To mark a special occasion or simply to unwind, duos indulge at luxe hotels and spas. Get pampered with a couples massage at Fountains Day Spa or full spa packages, like the Gentleman’s R&R, at Sugar House. At The Lorien Hotel & Spa, adventurous types try the caviar facial. By day the river bustles with yachts and water taxis, but an evening cruise with the Potomac Riverboat Company brings spectacular views of illuminated D.C. monuments. For an unforgettable meal, make reservations at elegant American restaurant Vermilion, where President and Mrs. Obama toasted each other on Valentine’s Day.

Boston and Williamsburg, the tavern became an important political and social center, whose notable patrons included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee. ■ Walk up Cameron Street to George Washington’s Townhouse , 508 Cameron Street. This structure re-creates a modest 18th-century dwelling originally built in 1769 by Washington to provide convenient quarters when business or inclement weather prevented his return to Mount Vernon. ■ Continue on Cameron, and cross over N. Washington Street. Christ Church , 118 N. Washington Street, was built in 1773 and is an excellent example of a small rectangular Georgian church. The three-story tower with belfry topped by a cupola was completed in 1818. George Washington played a part in building the church and was an original pewholder (number 60). Robert E. Lee was also a member of the congregation. ■ Turn left on N. Washington Street toward King Street, which turns into S. Washington. The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum sits at 201 S. Washington Street. Since its beginnings in 1839, the building has been used as a Civil War hospital, a private home, an office building and the nation’s first Bicentennial Center. Today, the Lyceum displays exhibits on Alexandria’s story through more than 1,500 historical objects.

Carlyle House BEGIN YOUR TOUR at the Alexandria Visitors Center at Ramsay House , 221 King Street at the corner of Fairfax Street, a re-creation of the circa 1724 home of Scottish merchant and Alexandria co-founder William Ramsay. ■ Walk two blocks east on King Street toward the Potomac River to Union Street. Turn right onto Union and right onto Prince. Welcome to Captain’s Row, one of Alexandria’s oldest and most picturesque blocks with authentic cobblestones. Sea captains or shipmasters built many of these Federal houses at a time when Alexandria rivaled New York and Boston as a port of entry. ■ Continue up Prince Street to the 200 block, known as Gentry Row . On the corner of Prince and Lee, find the Athenaeum . Built in 1851, this antebellum Greek Revival building originally housed the Bank of the Old Dominion. Today, the Athenaeum is an art gallery and the home of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association. ■ Turn right on S. Fairfax Street. Find the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum , 105-107 S. Fairfax Street, where Edward Stabler began his pharmacy business in 1792, serving customers like Martha Washington and Robert E. Lee. The family business operated continuously until

■ Turn left on Prince Street, then right on S. Alfred Street. Friendship Firehouse , 107 S. Alfred Street, built in 1855, is the headquarters of the Friendship Fire Company, Alexandria’s first volunteer firefighting squad. The stories of those who protected Alexandria’s citizens from fire—an overwhelming concern in the days of mostly wooden buildings—are preserved in the Friendship Firehouse Museum.

1933 when the Depression forced its closure. Today, the museum exhibits herbal botanicals and medical equipment, much preserved in its original form. ■ Turn left onto King Street and right into Market Square. City Hall , 301 King Street, is home to Alexandria’s city government. Its structure was built in 1871 as a courthouse, atop a site first used as a market space frequented by George Washington. Today, its steeple tower is a landmark on the Alexandria horizon, and the Farmers Market tradition continues each Saturday throughout the year. ■ Return to Fairfax Street, and turn left.

Carlyle House , 121 N. Fairfax Street, was built in 1752 by wealthy Scottish merchant and city co-founder John Carlyle. This handsome stone mansion was later the home of the Green family, featured in the PBS drama “Mercy Street.” ■ Turn left onto Cameron Street, and walk one block to Gadsby’s Tavern Museum , 134 N. Royal Street. Businessman John Wise built this twobuilding complex: the 1785 Georgian-style City Tavern and the 1792 Federal-style City Hotel famous for its great ballroom. Ideally situated on the main stage coach route between

Bicyclists join guided sightseeing tours, traversing marked paths and waterfront parks that merit the city’s status as a bike-friendly destination. On the water, visitors partake in boat rentals and transient slips for short-term docking at the marina. On land, opportunities for family-friendly exercise range from games of laser tag to Top Golf, a driving range and mini-golf experience.
