The Huon Valley, a short drive south-west of Hobart, used to be filled with orchards in the days when Tassie was known as the Apple Isle. Find out about this sweet history in the apple museum at Willie Smith’s, then have a taste of today’s adults-only apple drinks. There are four ciders to choose from, plus a perry and seasonal releases like the cider aged for 16 months in barrels used by the internationally renowned Sullivan’s Cove Whisky distillery. There’s a distillery here too, so apple brandy and apple blanco are also on the menu. Sip some at a leisurely pace over the kitchen’s dishes bursting with local flavours. Willie Smith’s big old 1940s apple-packing shed also hosts a Saturday market showcasing regional producers and artisans, and live music on Sundays.

Although orchardstrudgingClark-PortNaomiehasbeenthroughsinceshe could walk, the idea to make cider didn’t come to her until recently. In 2012, she realised just how much great cider fruit there was on the farm she and her husband, Tony, ran. Naomie jumped straight into it, enlisting the help of some of Tasmania’s finest cider-makers. She named the range of ciders – which use fruit from apple and pear trees up to 80 years old – after her grandfather Frank, who used to call Franklin the centre of the apple universe. But the Clarks’ story in Franklin goes back even further than that. Her family’s been in the region for six generations – in fact, her relatives were the first white people to settle in Franklin. Woodside, the farm where the Clark family live (and get fruit for Frank’s Cider) was founded in 1836. Frank’s Cider is already forging a legacy of its own, impressing judges in cider shows across the country.

The Pagan range includes an awardwinning apple cider, Australia’s first cherry and apple cider blend, called Cerise, and a luscious pear cider. There are also occasional seasonal blends, including a unique quince and apple cider. The cherry and quince juice used in Pagan Cider is made from fruit that, in the past, would have been thrown out or fed to animals. Now it’s being used in some of Tasmania’s most innovative cider. You can have a free taste of all their ciders at their cellar door which is the southernmost in the world.

12With a name like Pagan, it shouldn’t be a surprise that these ciders celebrate the purity of Tasmania’s seasonal fruits. Pagan doesn’t add concentrate, syrup or sugar to its ciders. Instead, they’re made using fresh, whole Huon Valley fruit that’s grown by fourth-generation orchardists who care about the environment. Once Pagan’s sourced these apples, it does things a little differently to other cidermakers. They have adopted winemaking techniques and technology to help them craft the best possible ciders.

The township of Plenty lies at the heart of the Derwent Valley and that’s where Plenty Cider produces full-flavoured ciders using premium fruits from the area.
Family is a major part of who Plenty Cider is. Whilst their location blesses them with the perfect conditions to craft cider – their family members have called Plenty home for over 30 years. All Plenty products carry the Cider Australia trust mark. This mark indicates that Plenty cider is made from 100% Australian grown fruit and through purchasing their cider you are supporting Australian fruit growers and regional communities.

Although Lost Pippin is not open to the public, their cellar door is at neighbouring Puddleduck Vineyard.
At Richmond in Tasmania’s beautiful Coal River Valley, Lost Pippin handcrafts the best Tasmanian apples and pears into unique, balanced and complex artisan ciders.
The Sparkling is a warm-weather number, taking the drinker on a sojourn into sweet, red apple beauty. The Wild is a funky, structured beast, slightly drier than most but refreshing and bursting with apple character. The Still is a loving tribute to older English farmhouse drops, while the Heritage uses traditional cider apples and heritage apples. The result is a cider that’s more tannin-driven, with a palate that’s especially attractive for white wine lovers.
Lost Pippin are dedicated to carefully blending different varieties of apple and pear – and nothing else – into a range of balanced ciders.
