What Scares you, Drives you.I have been in the fitness industry for 11 years now, and have seen thousands of people come into the door of a gym looking to make a change. The opportunity to help people make a significant change in their lives is what I love about being a fitness coach. The interesting thing about meeting someone for the first time, is how worried they seem to be. Most will say, “I am nervous”, or “I have never worked out before”. Basically what they are saying is that fitness is Scary! I understand, starting something new that you have never done before is scary. I relate this feeling to having my first son, I was scared to death! I now have this precious little man to take care of, to feed, bathe, change, and prevent sickness, basically do everything! So, I completely under-
stand how starting a new workout program may feel scary. But, when you really think about it fitness isn’t scary. It’s the reasons why you are working out that are scary. Think about what is really scary: Diabetes! Stroke! High blood pressure! Back pain! Surgery! Heart attack! Dying young! Now that is SCARY STUFF! On the other hand, do you know what is great? What scares you, drives you! When you look at it like that, fitness isn’t really scary at all. For me having a kid was scary, but now even though I was scared, I am now also filled with
excitement, joy and opportunity. I mean, I get the opportunity to be a part of his life forever, and help shape who he is. To me, the best way to look at what scares you is to see it as an opportunity. Think about it, working out is actually the medicine that can cure what we are scared of. You get the opportunity to change your life and in a lot of cases, your story can inspire change in others. It is time to take what is scaring you and let it be the fuel that is driving you. So what are you really scared of? Are you scared of working out a few times a week or are you scared of poor health and risk of disease? I think I know your answer. Now use what scares you to drive you to success in 2016! Coach Arron

Well, it’s January and everyone knows what that means…it’s National Bath Safety Awareness Month again. It is hard to believe it has already been another year, so check those leaky faucets and count the treads on those slippery mats you put too much faith in. Who am I kidding? It has probably been years since anyone has celebrated this much needed month of awareness dedicated to bath safety. I can poke fun at this holiday because I know for a fact, that not one person reading this has died in an unfortunate bath time accident. Let’s start over. Well, it’s January and everyone knows what that means…it’s New Years Resolution time! A new year means a new start for many of us. It is a time to kick old habits, begin new ones, get rid of those 2015 calendars (they are so last year anyway) and of course to rip up all those checks we accidentally keep writing 2015 on for the first couple of weeks. Many of us have big plans for the new year and that is really exciting. Others just want to keep doing what they are doing and that is great as well. Whatever your plans are, just do what is best for you. We all know what the hardest part of new years resolutions are right? You 6 • www.adahub.com
got it, keeping them. How do we manage to keep them? My advice is to take it one day at a time. Don’t overload yourself with a ton of new habits or tasks to accomplish all at once. You remember how to eat an elephant don’t you? One bite at a time. Personally, I have never had elephant, but to each his own. Start with just a few things that you know you can accomplish. It feels good to set a goal and achieve it on the first day. We can get discouraged if we set our goals too lofty. Don’t set yourself up for failure, one bite at a time. Now I keep wondering what elephant must taste like. Should I order it medium rare or deep fry it and cover it with gravy? Goals. Set goals daily. I need to write things down or I will forget what I am doing and get distracted…elephant gumbo, elephant kabobs, sometimes it happens in the middle of writing things down. Okay, so you should take it one day at a time, set achievable goals, don’t get distracted and finish a single task before moving on to the next one. Sometimes we can get too many things on our list that we only half way do each of them. If you have task-oriented goals, just take it a day at a time
and do your best to give yourself the right amount so you can have the satisfaction of completing each one. Some of us may not have task-oriented goals. Some of us may want to have a more positive outlook on life. Some may want to be more intentional as a parent or a more loving spouse. Others might want to quit smoking while some of us will try to exercise more. Some might even venture out and acquire the taste for a delicious, exotic elephant steak sandwich. Whatever your resolution may be, I encourage you to get help. We all need someone to come along side of us and hold us accountable. Don’t try to go at it alone. Most importantly, we have to remember that we only have today. We can plan for the week, the month or even the entire year, but we only have today. There is no yesterday. There is no tomorrow. There is only today. Resolve to giving your best each day, and know that having a “Happy New Year”, is up to you. P.S. No elephants were harmed, maimed, killed or consumed during the writing of this article. I can assure you that all Ada Hub staff are pro-elephant.

Music can be really important to a child’s development. Music can be an emotional release, letting all the anger and sadness drift away. More than this, though, music can just be fun. Mike McClure takes music seriously and also not so seriously. It is serious because it is his job and has been for decades. But, at the same time, McClure devotes his life to music because it is fun and enjoyable. It is a gift that was given to him and that he continues to pass down. McClure started playing the guitar when he was ten. His father had a guitar and would play around the house, just for fun. His father taught him his first chords and bought him his first guitar. When McClure graduated from Tecumseh and moved on to OSU, he liked to play some music around Stillwater. His father told him, “You need to go for it.
Now is the time to try. Otherwise, you will regret it.” It is hindsight that makes McClure truly appreciate the gift that his father gave him. Most parents would tell their kids to give up music and focus on their school work. They say that music isn’t a career. But his dad believed in him and encouraged him where many others wouldn’t have. It was at this point in time that McClure started a band with some friends, The Great Divide. McClure played with The Great Divide for ten years, from 1992-2002. They could be classified as Red Dirt music. While McClure really loved playing with them, he also wanted to branch out and focus on his solo career. They still get together from time to time, though, to do reunion shows. McClure’s main focus now, though, is his new band, the Mike McClure Band, and his production studio.
McClure like to give people a chance to record their music in a “painless environment.” What he means by that, is that he wants them to be comfortable. A band is going to produce better music if they are relaxed and feel at ease. Most recording studios feel like a sterile environment, but not McClure’s. It is out in the country, decorated with his own personal flair, and even includes some friendly goats to pet. It is a recording studio, but with the personal feel one gets when playing music with friends. This makes it fun for McClure, and also fun for the bands. McClure has become the permanent producer for Cross Canadian Ragweed and has also produced albums for Stoney LaRue, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, the Turnpike Troubadours, and the Damn Quails. Recently, McClure finished producing an album by Kaitlin Butts, “Same Hell, Different Devil.” McClure likes giving these musicians a chance to make their music better and really discover something about their craft through the act of recording. He also gets to sit in on some of the records, which makes it even more fun. It www.adahub.com • 9
is like he has a job where he gets paid to listen to music and occasionally jam out. His recording studio also gives him a chance to record his own music. He has a new album out that he recorded with Cody Canada, “Chip and Rays: Together Again for the First Time.” His own band, the Mike McClure Band, has some upcoming shows as well. For updated information check out, mikemcclureband.com. While The Great Divide had more of a country feel to it, his new band is more rock and roll. This works for McClure, though, because he loves all different genres of music. Sometimes he will be into punk, and other times it will be Merle Haggard. No matter what, though, he always comes back to the Rolling Stones. McClure’s father gave him more than the
gift of music. He gave him the chance to do what makes him happy. And now McClure is doing the same for his girls, age 16 and 13. His eldest, Marleigh, is also a songwriter and one of her songs appears on his latest album. McClure just wants to encourage his girls to do whatever makes them happy because that is really all that matters. When talking about recording and jamming with other people, McClure says, “As long as it’s fun, I’m in.” This quote seems to be about more than just music, though. It is a philosophy and a way of life. When I asked McClure for advice for musicians, he told me, “Practice as much as you can. Be prepared to get your teeth kicked in and have some thick skin.” I think there is one more thing he would add to this list, though: have fun.
