Ada Area Job Fair August 11 With the annual Ada Area Job Fair just around the corner, August 11 at the Agriplex, I’ll discuss how to make the most of a job fair this month. A wide range of employers will be attending this event, which makes it a prime opportunity for not only new job seekers, but those seeking to advance their careers. Before the Job Fair To increase your chances of success at a job fair, one must prepare themselves before the job fair starts. If possible, get a list of the employers who will be attending and determine those you are most interested in working for. Once these have been identified, use the internet to research and familiarize yourself with each company. By having prior knowledge of a business, you put yourself ahead of others in the recruiters eyes. Prepare an updated resume and bring numerous copies with you to the job fair. Take the time to proofread your resume at least twice and preferably have someone else look it over as well. Also prepare a list of references and previous employer contact information. You can never be too prepared. Take the time to develop and practice a short one to two minute speech
about yourself, your skills and experience, career interests, and any other information you think is relevant to you getting the job. This will be your short commercial, that helps pitch yourself to business recruiters. The day before the job fair lay out and iron the clothes you plan to wear. Always remember to keep your appearance neat, clean, and pleasing to the eye. Dress for the type of job you want and remember, you can never be overdressed, but you can be underdressed. During the Job Fair I recommend arriving early, so you’re guaranteed time with each potential employer you are interested in. This will also allow you time to review the updated employer list, so you can see if there are any new employers. When you approach a recruiter, have your resume in hand, introduce yourself and offer a firm handshake. Be prepared to answer questions about items on your resume and about your skills and work experience. If possible ask the recruiter questions about the company as well, this not only indicates your interest but can help you decide if you’re a good fit for their business. Before ending your conversation, inquire about how their hiring process works and ask for the
business card of the recruiter. If you feel overwhelmed or nervous consider talking with a company you may not have expressed an interest in, so you can boost your confidence before moving on to your target employers. Smiling and eye contact are a must, while chewing gum, using slang, and fidgeting should be avoided. If you must bring children with you, try to bring a friend and have them wait in the lobby with the children. You can take turns watching the children and visiting with prospective employers. You wouldn’t take your child to an interview, and a job fair should be treated like an interview. After the Job Fair I recommend either sending an email or thank you letter to the recruiters you met with during the job fair within seven days. This shows your interest was sincere and increases your chances of getting an interview. A follow up call would also be acceptable. You don’t want to be overly persistent, but you do want to indicate your interest. We all look through windows as we travel around Ada. But our surroundings aren’t just scenery; they can make us smile. The people at Townsend’s Bottle Shop, 700 E. 6th St., recognize this fact and want to bring that whimsy into our lives. About a month ago, customers were requesting a particular item: Kraken Black Spiced Rum. The Townsend’s Bottle Shop girls (or TBS girls, as Johnna Townsend calls them) ordered it right away. With the upcoming release of Pirates of the Caribbean Four: On Stranger Tides, the girls started talking, and soon Rebecca Ayres was making a window display. She designed it and soon made it a reality, with the help of her 14-year-old daughter, Saela. Mimicking the front of the Kraken bottle, she created an octopus, the size of which none of us would wish to encounter. One hand holds a bottle of Kraken and the other a bottle holding a secret message from Saela to her best friend. A peaceful seascape carries a pirate ship, complete with flag and cannons made of Jim Beam Black mini bottles. Saela designed the pirate ship, along with the mermaid that adorns it—a Barbie doll with a Play Doh tail. After the display went up, and the movie was released, the girls went together to see it. They celebrated the display, the movie, but also their friendship. As Johnna Townsend states, “I’m so proud of my TBS girls.� The people at Townsend’s Bottle Shop want to brighten our days, even if we’re just passing by. Personally, I can’t wait to see their Fourth of July display—fireworks, on a black background, made of wire, tin foil, and spray paint. I’m sure it will be something worth seeing. The original Rage located in Ardmore, OK has been going 20 years strong along with our own Ada Rage for 12 years. Owner Chris Peters came to Ada to open a new location but when he realized I had a passion for fashion, he said “Take it and run with it! You know more about Ada than I do. Build up the Ada store!� The Rage started out with jeans and t-shirts only but I wanted to bring my love of big city fashion from places like LA, New York, Vegas and to the small town of Ada! If you saw it on TV on a celebrity or in a magazine I wanted to have it and make sure it was kept exclusive. ow many hours have we all spent at Wintersmith Park, playing on the monkey bars, fishing off the docks, walking on the trails, and feeding the ducks? It is easy, though, to take these opportunities for granted. But not many other cities the size of Ada have something so beautiful. The park, however, did not just spring forth fully formed. It has its own rich history, going back as far as 1905. The Norris family was very affluent and owned a large portion of land South of Ada. In 1905, P.A. Norris came to an agreement with the city to build a lake on his land for the Oklahoma Portland Cement water supply. This was the beginning of Wintersmith Lake. Several years later, in 1929, the Ada Park Commission was founded and worked with P.A. and Josephine Norris to get the land around the lake deeded to the city in 1931. Francis Wintersmith, whose husband worked for the cement plant and was the best friend of Josephine Norris, was instrumental in getting the park built and thus it is named for her. Two years later, in 1933, the Ada city council was able to get federal assistance through one of FDR’s New Deal projects, the CCC, or Civilian Conservation Corps. It was a rarity for the CCC to do a city project, as most of their projects were state or federal. Nevertheless, though, they came to Ada, were housed on site at the park, and proceeded to develop it into what we know today. They built the lodge, the amphitheater, the road bridges, the foot bridges, and the original trail (which the concrete one follows to this day). In 1938, a swimming pool opened, though not the current one. The original swimming pool was actually a part of the lake. The island in the middle was originally used as a

diving platform and lifeguard station. It wasn’t until 1958 that the current, 50 m competition pool was dedicated. The splash parks were not added until 2009. The CCC wasn’t the only government project to help develop Wintersmith, though. The WPA, or Works Progress Administration, also came to Ada. In 1939, they built road improvements, fish culture ponds, croquet courts, picnic tables, and stone benches. If you look closely around the park, you can even find the original WPA stamp on some of the stonework. Wintersmith park, however, is a continual work in progress, with major improvements made every twenty years or so. In the 50’s, for instance, not only was the current pool built; the softball field was developed and lit, the roadways were paved, and 1,000 guard posts were put in place to protect people from driving into the lake. In the 70’s the walking trail was paved, following the course of the original CCC trails. Shortly after, in the early 80’s, the walking trail was widened to 8’ and lit; also the fishing dock by the campfire cabin was constructed. One of the most significant developments, though, had
little to do with new construction. Dr. Marvin Krocker, who was a history professor at ECU, led the fight to have certain areas of the park placed on the National Historic Register. In 1999, his efforts were rewarded when the entire park was put on the register as its own National Historic District. This led the way for the renovation of the amphitheater in 2007 as a project for the State Centennial Commission. Wintersmith Park, as lovely as it is, will not simply remain the same, though. Improvements will continually be made in the future. Soon a stage, restrooms, and parking lot will be added to the amphitheater. The most exciting development, though, is the long-range plan to tie the current bike trail, which starts on 12th street, to the park in a great loop. It will go from 12th street to Ada High, down to the park to tie in with the trail, up to ECU and the improvements on E. Main, then back to its starting point. So next time you visit the park, think about all the history that goes into this jewel of Ada. Think about all the people who have visited before, worked diligently to improve it. And while pondering the past, get excited about the future. ■

While it is wonderful that we have such a beautiful park, complete with lake, trails, and playgrounds, one of the things that makes Wintersmith truly unique are the rides provided and operated by the Kiwanis Clubs of Ada. I remember riding the train and the carousel, playing miniature golf, when I was only a little girl. It is wonderful to return to the park many years later and still be able to enjoy those same small pleasures, and I know that I am not alone. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada was formed in 1958, and takes the primary responsibility for the rides at the park, operating separate, but in conjunction with, the Ada Park’s Department. There are actually three chapters of Kiwanis International in Ada, the oldest being the Kiwanis Club of Ada and the newest being the Diamond K Club. All of them, however, have the same overall mission, “To change the world, one child and one community at a time.” They each have their own 14 • www.adahub.com

projects in order to accomplish that goal, and in 1958 the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada decided to transform an overgrown portion of Wintersmith Park into something that would provide family fun for people of all ages. That year, club members built the train themselves, piecing it together from scrap metal and farming implements, laying the track and building the bridges. It was such a success that one year later, in 1959, they decided to purchase a used carousel, expanding their operation. In 1966, Jack Witherow designed the miniature golf course, though they began construction on it in the spring of that year. Most recently, however, the Kiwanis members decided, at their last Christmas party, to replace the old carousel with a new one. Now, a mere six months later, you can ride the new carousel at the park. Because it is larger, the roof had to be raised four feet, and the base by two. Amazingly, no loans have yet to be acquired because of the generous contributions by community members of
both time and money. The price to ride the train or the carousel is only 75 cents, a bargain by any estimation. One could probably find that money in their couch cushions or a child could use their allowance. If you want to play golf, the fee is $1.50—a great deal for some outdoors family fun. The whole operation is staffed entirely by volunteers from the Kiwanis chapters of Ada and all profits go back into operational costs. Everything returns to the community. What they need more than anything, though, are new members because they are, as Bob Vavricka states, “Trying to carry on what the original members started 50 years ago.” You can read more about how you can help your community through the Kiwanis organizations by visiting the Kiwanis International website at www.kiwanis.org or visit the facebook group for the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada. They nearly made it to the NBA Finals and now they’re coming to Ada. Members of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team will be in town August 1-2 to host a Thunder Youth Basketball camp just before local youngsters head back to school. Trinity Baptist Church and East Central University have joined forces with the National Basketball Academy and the Oklahoma City Thunder organization for this first-ever Thunder Youth Basketball camp, according to Jim York from Trinity. The camp will be held on the campus of East Central University. “Three years ago, we hosted the Hornet Camp when they were in Oklahoma City, and that went over very well,” York said. “Then we had a big group event from our church at a Thunder game this year and just approached them about hosting a similar camp here with the Thunder, and they were really excited about the possibility of having a camp here” York said. “We’re using it as an outreach ministry for our church as well as a fund-raising event for the East Central University men’s basketball program.” Officials with the Oklahoma City Thunder have said a number of Thunder players should be on hand for the event, but camp sponsors said they don’t know which players that will be. Kids will
work closely with players and camp staff members on fundamentals, practice habits and teamwork, while implementing those skills in game-like situations. Each camper will also receive a Thunder T-shirt and a ticket to a future Oklahoma City Thunder regular season game. Additional tickets can also be purchased at a discount for family and friends. As an added treat, York said Thunder mascot Rumble the bison is scheduled to be on hand for the camp. York said Trinity officials are hoping to have more than 200 kids sign up for the camp, which costs $75 for the two-days of activities. For those children whose families may run short on funds, York said a number of Trinity church members have established scholarships to help pay the way for kids to attend. The camp will divide players into two different age groups: ages 5-12 and ages 13-17. Session 1 will be for the younger campers and will run from 9 a.m. until noon on both August 1 and August 2. The afternoons, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., will be reserved both days for the older campers. For more information, or to sign up for the camp, call the Trinity offices at 580332-6317. ■

S
ometimes it’s overwhelming to think about what the next year might bring, much less the next decade. Women like Billie Floyd, however, can cause one to think—have more perspective—about the way one’s life might be. Billie is an Adan through and through. Her family came to this town in 1918, she was raised here, went to Ada High, then to ECU, and eventually came back to teach at ECU for 31 years before retirement. But this is just the beginning of the story. Before she retired, Billie taught physical education at ECU with a constant drive to make the world better for all. She liked to focus on individual sports like swimming, tennis, and bowling. However, her love for dance seems to rise above all others as she speaks about the modern style of Isadora Duncan, but also the importance of square dancing and folk dances as well, relating the importance such things have to history and culture, as well as brightening the hearts of both participant and observer. Before the Special Olympics even existed, Billie was bringing residents of McCall’s Chapel to ECU to have her students work with them. When the
Special Olympics were finally made a reality, Billie jumped at the chance to be the first director of the Ada area and did so for 21 years. She was the very first, in the country, to introduce bowling into the Special Olympics, and still remains both an advocate and an innovator for those who need us most. She hosted therapeutic horse riding clinics in the 1970s for special needs kids; it was only in the past few years that news reports and the medical community have recognized the therapeutic aspects that she, almost intuitively, knew. Billie is interested in helping residents on both local and state levels. She wrote the grant to get funding for the Tri-County Indian Nations Community Development Corporation (which provides housing, much like Habitat for Humanity). Recognizing the need for more equal representation in the State Senate, Billie decided to run for the State Senate. She carried every precinct except for one, making her one of three female senators in Oklahoma at that time. Though she only had one term in office, she spent that time trying to improve our state’s economy through tourism, introducing the bill to change the state flower from Mistletoe to the Indian Blanket, among
many other accomplishments. Now, in addition to all of her other obligations, she works for the U.S. Census Bureau. It is not unusual for her to drive 200 miles in a single day, doing interviews all over the state. But perhaps her passion is revealed most when she talks about the history of Ada. She was Chairman of the 2001 Centennial Celebration of Ada, organizing Walking and Driving tours so that people might explore our city on their own, learning of its rich and vibrant past. She is a piece of that living history as one is taken back in time, listening to the stories she has to tell. Her work with PAST (Preserving the Area’s Stories in Time), reflects these interests as she works to provide a place for our stories, whether it be in an archive or a museum. This remarkable woman recognizes the need to help make other’s lives better, and it is that focus that seems to guide her every action. It is not just in the finding of a home, though, or making sure that all people are represented equally; it is also in the preservation of the past, helping others to learn the lessons that history teaches, so that, perhaps, tomorrow might be a better day. ■ www.adahub.com • 21

When I mention couponing to others, the most common thing I hear is that they don’t have the time to coupon. Couponing can take as little or as much time as a person wants to spend. On average I spend roughly 2-3 hours a week on coupons, most of which is completed while I am doing some other activity as well. Clipping and organizing coupons is the task that takes me the longest, but I clip and organize at night while enjoying my favorite tv shows. It generally takes me 45 minutes to get everything clipped and organized. Parents can also have their older children help with the coupon clipping. Matching coupons with sales ads should be the most time consuming task for couponers. Fortunately, there are numerous websites that provide these match ups for a variety of stores for you. I usually spend about 5 minutes s day reading this sites. I use these match ups to create a list for each store in
Ada of what I consider the top deals for the week. These usually takes me roughly 5 minutes per store and then another 15 minutes to gather all the coupons I need for the top deals. This allows me to run in to each store to get the top deals quickly. Familiarity with store layouts can reduce the amount of time you spend in the store. I can usually get the top deals and be checked out in less than 10 minutes in each store. I usually stop by the stores right before or right after work, and I can usually go to 2-3 stores in 30 minutes. Couponing doesn’t have to be time consuming and require hours of prep work and hours in stores. Anyone can take advantage of coupon savings regardless of a busy schedule. ■The photo included cost me less than $20 and 30 minutes in time to complete.
