June 25th OKLAHOMA CITY (June 3, 2016) – The second annual 1901 Fest will be returning to Ada, this year hosted at East Central University (ECU) Plaza on Saturday, June 25. The free community event will feature three musical acts, food trucks and local vendors for an evening of entertainment. Paige Williams, director of corporate development and tourism for the Chickasaw Nation said that events such as 1901 Fest allow Chickasaw Country to increase tourism efforts in Ada and Pontotoc County. “Partnering with other local businesses in Ada, and bringing musical acts to Pontotoc County increases the tourism opportunities in Ada, and showcases the many destinations in Ada to event and concert-goers,” said Williams. “When visitors come in from surrounding communities to attend 1901 Fest and see the array of retail and food vendors, they’re likely to return to Ada to explore the community further on ad-

ditional trips, thus increasing tourism to Ada and Pontotoc County.” Musical acts include Red Dirt Rangers from Ada; Rasheed Lowery, also from Ada and Brian Nhira from Tulsa, and a former contestant on the NBC hit show, The Voice. The musical acts will start at 5 p.m. on the ECU Plaza at the corner of Blake Shelton Boulevard and Center Avenue. The family friendly festival includes retail booths, face painting, children’s activities, a beverage garden provided by The Quart House and food vendors including: J’eet Yet, Dippin’ Dots, Nacho Biznez, and Mr. Tater Cater. All retail and food vendors and activities will start at 5 p.m. across the ECU plaza. Lawn chairs and/or blankets are encouraged as seating will not be provided. Named after the year Ada was incorporated as a city, 1901 Fest is open to the public and is free to attend. For more information on Chickasaw Country and 1901

Fest, visit: www.chickasawcountry.com/events/ view/1901-fest. IN SHAPE

Amp up the Nutrition with Summer Bounty Summer in Oklahoma means a bounty of fresh, local fruits and veggies. Whether you grow your own or buy local, taking advantage of fresh produce means you save money and boost your nutrition while treating your taste buds. Those who sweat often (as in any Oklahoman who consistently spends time outside during the summer) may need more sodium, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium and chloride than the average joe. Amping up your fresh fruit and veggie intake can help you meet these needs. Visiting local farmer’s markets is a great way

to find fresh produce at a great price while supporting your local farmers. Visits to the market also make good outings for the kids and serve as the perfect teaching and learning opportunity. Involving the kids in choosing and purchasing food helps them to take ownership in the meal and increases the likelihood of them eating fruits and veggies. Checkout okgrown.com for more information on local farmers’ markets in your area. Go ahead and stock up while you can. Plan to preserve the extra for winter by freezing, canning or drying. Your local OSU Cooperative Extension

Star Edwards Registered Dietitian

Office serves as a great resource for food preservation. For the next couple of months Oklahomans will enjoy an abundance of blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cucumbers, green beans, okra, onions, peaches, potatoes, summer squash, sweet corn, tomatoes and watermelon. HE ALTH & WELLNESS

Ada Pediatric Clinic by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

Once you have a child, their health becomes a primary concern. Every sniffle, sneeze, and spit-up becomes a question. Should I go to the doctor? Their health is so much more than just dealing with sickness, though. Their overall wellness is important too. Ruth Weesner, MD, Sharon Weirick, APRN CNP, and the staff at Ada Pediatric Clinic believe that their job is not just treating sick kids, but promoting the overall wellness of the children, helping them to be the best that they can be. Dr. Ruth Weesner has been a pediatrician since 1989, but she’s been here in Ada for over 10 years. She has always loved kids, even when she taught Sunday school in high school. When she was a senior in med school she had to try out all different types of medical disciplines, but she was always really happy and excited when her patient was a kid. Being a pediatrician allows her to work with all ages of children. She really likes the babies because she gets to see them grow so quickly and every time can see how much more advanced they are. But every age is great. School aged kids are great to engage in conversation. And, while you wouldn’t use the term “conversation” when talking about most doctors, Weesner is different. One of the things that makes Ada Pediatric Clinic different is that they schedule more time for well visits than sick visits. But, if your child is sick, you don’t have to wait days or weeks to get her or him in to visit the doctor. They keep some slots available starting at 8:30 just for sick kids. You have to call at

8:00, but at least they can probably get seen that day. It is important to them that the child get well, but also stay well. Weesner did her medical school at Oral Roberts where they focused on treating the whole person, even the whole family. You can go to the health department for shots, but not for the checkups. And sometimes shots aren’t enough. If a problem exists, they need to catch it before it goes too far. In addition to basic wellness issues, they will also help with chronic issues like asthma, diabetes, ADHD, and autism. One of the many wonderful things about Ada Pediatric Clinic is their expertise in autism. Sharon Weirick, APRN CNP (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certified Nurse Practitioner) has been certified in level 2 autism testing. She starts watching for signs of autism at 18 months to 3 years old. If she sees any indicators that the child might be autistic, she will recommend that they do a test. The test, though, is just some playtime that she observes. This fits right in with the overall push towards wellness at Ada Pediatric Clinic. If a child is going to be autistic, it is better that it is discovered early rather than later. This way the family, and the child, can get the help that they need right away. One of the most important things, though, is the attitude they have towards children. Many kid fear the doctor so Weesner and Weirick try to combat this with thoughtfulness, friendliness, and imagination. For instance, Weesner doesn’t wear her white coat to work because she is afraid it will make the children nervous. Weirick covers

her stethoscope in a green dinosaur to engage the child’s imagination. The lobby has toys, kid sized chairs, and a children’s movie playing. But the most fascinating thing is the mural which encompasses all the walls of the waiting room. It moves from a rainforest, to a beach, to an underwater scene. The individual examination rooms also have toys and are decorated with different themes: Noah, Space, ABC’s, Sports, Beach, and Fish. Ada Pediatric Clinic is located in the Doctor’s Park building, downstairs, right next to the lab, at 1414 E. Arlington St. Suite 1700. They take all major insurance as well as Soonercare. They can help you with a sick kid, keeping the kid well, fluoride treatments on their teeth (since pediatric dentists are few and far between, and have long waits to get in), immunizations, medicine, and also natural alternatives whenever it is appropriate. They recently went electronic with their records, which helps them modernize, but also helps the patient because of their patient portal. You can go to adapediatricclinic.patientmedrecords.com to send messages to the clinic, update your history, view labs, schedule shots, request refills, and view allergies. You can also request an appointment, even if you are a new patient. This brings a new level of involvement and information to the parent while helping the clinic help you as well. So check out their facebook page, “Ada Pediatrics” or give them a call at 332-7337. They are there to help you, but, most importantly, help your child be the best they can be.

WADDELL WEDDINGS by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

Planning a wedding can be one of the most exciting and stressful events in the life of a couple. So many decisions have to be made. What will the colors be? Which dress will the bride wear? Who will make the cake? And what about the music, the flowers, the reception? On the top of the list, however, is the all-important question: where will the wedding be held? While there are many different possible venues in Ada, there is one that sticks out as particularly beautiful and unique: Waddell Vineyards. Dr. Robert and Debbie Waddell planted their first vine in 2007. Robert had enjoyed dabbling in wine making since he was thirty, but it was mainly something that he did for family and friends. First they planted one acre of grapes for their homemade wine. Then they planted another acre. When they realized they had more wine than they could possibly drink, Waddell Vineyards was born and they got their license to sell wine in 2013. They built a tasting room and now have seven acres of grapes; what started as a small, fun, family project has turned into something even more rewarding. The vineyards seemed like the perfect loca-

tion for a storybook wedding. You can have your wedding outside or inside the chapel. And, perfect for Oklahoma, if you plan an outdoor wedding but the weather turns bad, there is the possibility of moving the whole thing inside, out of the wind and rain. The wedding chapel was opened in 2015. It is an 1800 square foot, shabby chic chapel with hard wood floors and white wooden walls. Round stained glass windows set in both ends of the chapel. The candelabras and wall sconces can be customized for whatever kind of light you choose—anything from candlelight to bright light. An 80’x 40’ deck, surrounded by grape vines, wraps around the chapel for a reception area. The chapel itself has a full bridal suite as well, with anything you could want to make you and your bridesmaids comfortable. For the music, your laptop can plug into the sound system and go directly through the speakers. The facilities are extensive at Waddell Vineyards. Not only do you have access to the chapel and the deck, but your wedding party can also make use of the tasting room for wine and beer. Chairs sit on the veranda outside the comfortable furnished tasting room, allowing you to enjoy a glass of wine

inside or outside. Also, there is another available deck that wraps around a tree and can be perfect for outdoor wedding vows or romantic photographs. A pavilion, covered with grapevines, works well for a reception, though they are planning on building a wedding barn in the near future that can double for weddings or for receptions. They provide the tables, the white tablecloths, the chairs—everything you need to have a lovely wedding. They also have the white wedding tents if those are called for. One of the great things about using Waddell Vineyards for your wedding is the availability. Debbie Waddell does not overbook her venue. She will only schedule one wedding per weekend. Weddings can be stressful enough without having to rush around because a venue is double booked. At Waddell Vineyards, you can come set up on a Friday, have the wedding on Saturday, and come back for all your stuff on Sunday. The facilities are yours for the weekend, so there is no reason to stress. While Waddell Vineyards is an excellent wedding venue, it is still a vineyard with other activities as well. They sell award winning wines and have many events throughout the www.adahub.com • 9

year, including Sip and Swirl parties where you can get together with your friends to paint and drink wine. They also had a Valentines party, a Cinco de Mayo party, and will have their yearly festival the last Saturday in July with live music, face painting, and vendors. Of all the fun things that happen at the vineyards, though, the weddings are still Debbie’s favorite. The best thing, for her, is meeting all the new and wonderful people. She gets really close with the brides, walking and talking with them, helping them figure out what they want to do. “Every time is like a new adventure,” Debbie says. Whether you are looking for a place to get married or a fun night out with the girls, Waddell Vineyards is a great choice. For more information you can call (580) 421-6933 or you can visit them as well. They have wedding brochures available on request. Their hours are 1:00-5:00 Thursday-Sunday for wine tastings and other days by appointment. They are located at 11533 County Road 3570, a few miles out on Country Club Rd. You can also check out their website for upcoming events at waddellvineyards.com, where you can also sign up for the monthly newsletter, or follow them on Facebook.
