Vitamin K, Vitamin D has gained much popularity in the last few years due to the discovery that it has many important functions besides those related to bones, but the new vitamin on the block is Vitamin K. Previously known for its role in blood clotting, we now know that Vitamin K helps protect against Osteoporosis, heart disease, heart attack and stroke, brain disease, cancer and inappropriate calcification. Research is looking into other health benefits such as helping to prevent Rheumatoid Arthritis and Parkinson’s disease. There are three types of vitamin K: Vitamin K1 – found in plants, especially green vegetables. Important for blood clotting. Vitamin K2 – made by bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Vitamin K3 – synthetic form found in some supplements and injections (not recommended). Vitamin K2 has often been overlooked, but it is the form we are most likely to be deficient in. It is also the form that receives the credit for helping to prevent health conditions.
the new kid on the block
Vitamin K2 has two important functions: Moving calcium around in the body. Vitamin K2 moves calcium into places it needs to be, like bones, and out of places it doesn’t need to be, like arteries. Activates proteins that control cell growth, which is an important role for preventing cancer There is an important relationship between Vitamin K2, Vitamin D, Calcium and Magnesium and it is important to have an appropriate balance between these four nutrients. If you take a Vitamin D supplement, you should also take a Vitamin K2 supplement. Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D work together for many functions and by taking Vitamin D, you are increasing the demand of Vitamin K2. Without Vitamin K2, Vitamin D will not reach it’s full potential, and could lead to calcification. It has recently been found that taking calcium supplements increases the risk of heart
attacks and strokes, but by taking Vitamin K2, you can help prevent this risk because Vitamin K2 will shuttle calcium out of the arteries. There are many causes of Vitamin K deficiency including: Long term use of some antibiotics that kill vitamin-K activating bacteria. Being older in age. Taking supplements or medications that prevent the absorption of fat. Taking certain medication like bile acid sequestrants used to reduce cholesterol, and anticonvulsants. Having health conditions that prevent the body from absorbing Vitamin K such as gallbladder disease, biliary disease, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease or other health conditions such as liver disease, hemodialysis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, heart disease, or diabetes. Having a diet with inadequate Vitamin K or a

low fat diet. There are two types of Vitamin K2: MK-4 and MK-7. When choosing a supplement, look for MK-7. It is best to get your nutrition, including Vitamin K from food, but most fermented foods high in Vitamin K2 are not included in the typical Northern American diet. If you choose a supplement, be sure to take it with a meal containing fat since Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin. The optimal amounts of Vitamin K2 are still being studied but 180-200 mcg is most likely adequate. If you take oral Vitamin D, take 100 mcg of MK-7 per 1,000 IU of Vitamin D. If you take medications or have health conditions, discuss Vitamin K supplementation with your physician, especially if you take Doxorubicin, Orlistat, Phenytoin, or Warfarin. Talk to your doctor about supplementation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or on dialysis. People with G6PD deficiency should avoid Vitamin K.

HE ALTH & WELLNESS
Doctors Park Pharmacy by: Sunnie Dawn Smith
Have you hugged your pharmacist lately? It's a silly question, but the truth is that a pharmacist is actually now becoming the most familiar member of a patient's medical team. With the rising costs in healthcare, pharmacists are often the go-to person to ask about symptoms, medication therapies, and which over the counter medicines are the best treatment, and financial investment, for them or a family member. A pharmacist is often the first to hear or detect a symptom that needs to be investigated or treated by a physician. Aaron Heilaman, your local pharmacist at Doctors Park Pharmacy, is no different. October is American Pharmacist Month. According to the American Pharmacist Association this is, “A time to recognize pharmacists for the vital contributions they make to healthcare in the United States through improved medication use and advanced patient care. It is a time to educate your patients, motivate your staff, and engage and inspire your community to know your pharmacists and know your medicines.” Doctors Park Pharmacy is celebrating this month to recognize the important role the pharmacist has in your community. More importantly, though, this serves as a time of awareness for what your pharmacist can provide for you to both improve your lifestyle and lower your medication costs. Doctors Park Pharmacy would like to encourage you to come in free of charge and discuss your medications privately with their pharmacist, Aaron Heilaman. Pharmacists are an easily accessible source to help you understand your medications, 6 • www.adahub.com
dosages, and possible interactions that could occur with multiple medications. Along with free medication counseling this month, and every month, they also provide free in-town deliveries, a med sync program that aligns multiple medications to dispense on the same schedule, medication therapy management (MTM), which, according to Heilaman is, “A service we provide in which we work with your insurance company to ensure the most appropriate medication and its use by continuing to follow up on the patient's therapy”. Doctors Park Pharmacy also has vaccinations available with no appointment for flu, pneumonia, shingles, pertussis (more commonly known as whooping cough), tetanus, diphtheria, and travel vaccinations. They do medication compounding for specialized drugs, bio identical hormone replacement, pain management, medication flavoring for children, and both name brand and generic over the counter medicines. Getting to know your pharmacist can help you become more familiar with the medicines you use. Consumers who know their pharmacist's name are twice as likely to ask their pharmacist the questions they have. They are also twice as likely to know the active ingredients in their prescription medications, over the counter products, herbal supplements, and vitamins and minerals. Americans spend billions of dollars each year on prescription and over-the-counter medications. The money is wasted if the medications are used incorrectly. In fact, the most expensive medications are those that don't work properly or can cause harm
due to misuse. The American Pharmacist Association states that every year in the U.S., failure to take medications as prescribed causes more than 1.5 million preventable medication-related adverse events. This costs the health care system approximately $290 billion. Taking your medication correctly is one of the best ways to decrease your health care costs. The likelihood of medication errors occurring decreases substantially when patients know their pharmacist and feel comfortable asking questions and seeking the pharmacists' advice. Doctors Park Pharmacy wholeheartedly agrees with this philosophy by treating their customers as a name and not a number. Being a smaller independent pharmacy gives them an advantage over the big chains by creating more quality customer care. The faces you see in Doctors Park Pharmacy won't change from week to week and chances are they will shout a “hello” along with a first name greeting! In addition to having quality care and quick wait times, Doctors Park Pharmacy has cards and gift items for baby, birthdays, and special occasions such as Swan Creek Candles, Little Giraffe, Leachco baby products, Faith Collection crosses and signs and fun jewelry and trinkets for kids, tweens, and teens. Doctors Park Pharmacy is a family owned independent pharmacy located at 1414 Arlington Street inside the Doctors Park Medical Building. For questions or to speak with the pharmacist or staff about the services provided please call 580332-5720. Let Aaron Heilaman help you get well and stay that way!

The Military Order of the
Purple Heart
by Sunnie Dawn Smith
While there are many types of people in our society who deserve our respect and gratitude—police officers, firefighters, teachers, and many others—the members of our armed services stand tall. There is nothing quite like the military. These men and women give their lives over to their commanding officers, selflessly doing what they are ordered to do. They endanger their lives, they help keep the peace, and they do the jobs that must be done and that so few are willing to risk. There are currently about 1.46 million members of the United States military. Since the Purple Heart was first created in 1782, there have been around 1.8 million recipients. That is larger than the total number of the military today. While many may be familiar with
veteran’s organizations such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, many are not familiar with the Military Order of the Purple Heart—an organization designed to support veterans with Purple Hearts and their families. The Purple Heart was first created in 1782 by General George Washington. It was called the Badge of Military Merit. In 1932, General Douglas MacArthur recreated the medal, renaming it the Purple Heart. It is the fifth highest military decoration and in order to receive it you must be wounded by an enemy in an armed conflict. The Military Order of the Purple Heart’s mission is to, “Foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, sup-

continued from page 9
port necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families.” Founded in 1952, there are currently 450 active chapters nationwide. Oklahoma has six of these, and Bob Lewis, an associate member, wants to found a seventh, right here in the Ada area. While Robert Lewis did not serve in the armed forces, his brother did. Gary Lewis was in the 4th infantry during the Vietnam War.
When his bunker, ten miles south of Pleiku, took heavy mortar fire in November 1969, the back of his thigh was grievously wounded. He is now the Chapter Adjutant Officer and a State Judge Adjutant of the Order. His brother, Robert, is able to be a part of this organization because he is a blood relative of a Purple Heart recipient. Anyone who is a direct descendant can join as an associate member. However, associate members can’t vote on anything, though they can be appointed to a position. Robert Lewis is the current Departmental and Chapter Americanism officer, reporting on issues of patriotic importance. There are many ways that the Order can help veterans and their families. They are a non-profit organization that raises money for important causes. Unlike many other organizations, they actually don’t want any money left over at the end of the month. They want to spend every penny to help those veterans in need. Whether it is rent, medical bills, food, or any other necessity, the Military Order of the Purple Heart wants to help as best as they can. In addition to the direct financial support, there are other ways they help this particular community. They can also point veterans toward services that they can use or help them navigate the red tape that permeates out system. The Order also provides a space
Loving God. Loving People. Serving Both.
for these wounded veterans to get together and talk about things that others might not understand. As Robert says, “It is a good way to cope with PTSD. These people have all been through the same types of situations.” This camaraderie is emphasized by the activities that the Order organizes, such as fishing trips, quail hunting, and many others. In order to join, there is a one-time lifetime membership fee of $50 and you must supply your credentials so you can be validated as a recipient of the Purple Heart. They also have a Ladies Auxiliary that serves the wives, sisters, daughters, and other family members of Purple Heart recipients. Robert Lewis is trying to start a chapter around the Ada area because we do have a lot of veterans, and many who might be able to use these services and camaraderie. In order to start a new chapter, you must have twelve members, but as of right now, Robert has three. If you have a Purple Heart, or know someone who does, you can contact Robert Lewis at Lewis_robert35@yahoo.com or call him at (580) 436-7144. Any Purple Heart recipients are welcome—old or new—but especially think about joining if you are a veteran who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan. There are others who can help and will understand. That is why the Military Order of the Purple Heart exists.

Risk Reduction Education by: Sunnie Dawn Smith
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871 (Web Source, NFPA). This great fire awakened firefighters and public officials to take greater action in prevention. Forty years after the
fire it was decided that the best way to observe the tragedy was to keep the public informed about fire prevention. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the

longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925. The Ada Fire Department wants to encourage everyone to have a mind of prevention. A lot of the fires right here in Ada were caused by something electrical, such as appliances going bad and even leaving a laptop on the carpet. Over the past few years there has been an increase in fatalities during home fires. “Clutter and hoarding can really cause an issue to people who need to escape quickly during a fire”, firefighter Danny Manuel says. We must do everything possible to prevent fires in our homes. What are some practical ways to prevent fires? Smoke alarms are an absolute must in every home. When smoke alarms fail, it is usually because the batteries are low or dead. Always be sure you have good batteries in your smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. Be cautious when you cook. Never leave pots or pans unattended while cooking, especially when children are around. Always be sure to keep flammable items away from cooking surfaces at all times. Failure to clean was a factor contributing to ignition in 17% of reported home fires involving ovens or rotisseries. When your oven has that “freshly burned” smell, it’s time to give it a good cleaning. Many people use special heating equipment in the Fall and Winter for extra warmth. Just over half of
14 • www.adahub.com
home heating fire deaths resulted from fires caused by heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattresses or bedding. Be sure to put such equipment in a safe place at all times. If you have a wood burning fireplace, be sure to have a sturdy cover to prevent embers from escaping onto carpet or other flammable objects. Even charging our phones, tablets and computers can generate enough heat to cause a fire. Always charge your devices on a hard surface so the heat can be spread out more evenly. We all enjoy the smell of a good candle. That being said, we need to remember that a candle is an open flame, which means it can ignite anything that can burn. Always blow candles out when you leave the room. Keep a candle at least 12 inches away from any other objects and never leave a candle burning when you go to sleep. Never use candles in a home where oxygen is used. Think about using flameless candles (I am going to get a nice letter from Bath & Body Works on that one). It is safer to use a flashlight in a power outage than a candle. What should you do if a fire does occur in your home? “You can’t always prevent a fire from happening, but you can always have a plan of action,” Danny urges. Parents, it is up to you to make a plan, explain the plan and then practice the plan with your children. The Ada Fire Department has resources available to everyone. You may have only a few minutes to get out of your home safely. Sit down with your kids and draw a map of your home together. Draw exit arrows from each room in
your home so everyone is clear on the best route out in any scenario. Each room should have two safe exits to get outside. Establish a meeting place outside so everyone knows where to go to be accounted for. Practice the escape during the day and at night a couple times throughout the year. Be sure to teach your kids how to escape on their own in case you are unable to help them. Remind your kids to stay low and NEVER go back into the home once they have made it outside (not even for their favorite toy). Call the fire department from outside when you are safe. Practice. Practice. Practice! In the spirit of the season, here are a few tips for being safe at Halloween: -try to use battery powered lights or glow sticks in jack-o-lanterns -if you use a candle in your jack-olantern, keep it far away from other objects -keep all decorations away from open flames or other heat sources -if your kids are going to a halloween party, tell them to look for ways out if there were an emergency -keep decorations clear of exits so you don’t block escape routes Fire prevention is up to all of us. Let’s be smart, safe and always make a plan. Remember, when you see an emergency vehicle always pull to the right to make a clear path for them. If they cannot get to the person in need, they cannot help. Danny says, “Every second counts in an emergency so always pull to the right when you see the light”. If everyone does their part, we will have a safer community.
