The Main Course Score the ham in a crisscross pattern about an inch deep. Place the ham in a deep pan and pour 1.5 bottles of beer over the top. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the ham and cover it with foil, making sure the foil does not touch the ham. Bake the ham at 350 degrees for 2.5 hours or until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees. Take the juice out of the baking pan and toss in a skillet. Heat the skillet up and let the juice reduce down a little. Pour this over the sliced ham to keep it nice and moist. Just add some potatoes and a nice salad to finish out the meal. The Extra Mile Use the leftover ham to make a tasty omelette the next morning. First, dice up the ham and grate about half a cup of sharp cheddar cheese. Then, whip up 3 eggs and season them with salt and pepper. Next, place a non-stick skillet on the stove over medium heat and melt 3 tablespoons of butter in it. Pour the egg mixture in and let it cook slowly. Add the cheese to the eggs as they cook. When the eggs are just about done, add your ham to heat it up. Serve it up with buttered toast, salsa, and a nice cup of coffee.

Buying a new car, especially if it is only new to you, can be nerve-wracking. You don’t know where to go. You don’t know who to trust. All you know is that you are going to spend a substantial amount of money on something you have to rely upon completely. JR Velasco, at Mid-America Auto Group, wants to help put that anxiety behind you and change the way you think about car salesmen. He runs a different kind of car lot and truly does look out for his customers. Though Mid-America Auto Group has existed, sometimes under different owners and names, since 1944, Velasco has only been here since May 2013. This month will mark his one year anniversary in Ada. Even though he is new to Ada, he is not new to the car business. He started selling cars at 21 and has been doing it for a quarter of a century now. He has worked at small lots and also very large corporate stores, but his favorite is where he is now. He knew the owners of Mid-America and had been helping them out with various things for years, but after 2-3 years they finally convinced him to come to Ada and run their business. When Velasco took over, he brought an ethical and moral business model with him. His own personal cell phone number is on the business cards and he invites customers, from either sales or service, to let him know if their experience has been less than excellent. He will take your call any time of the day, anywhere. While he loves the sense of accomplishment that comes from sales, and also helping somebody find that perfect fit for their style and budget, it is the younger generation that inspires him to continue doing what he does. He trains them in ethical business practices, making sure that they continue to satisfy both customer and employer, while also using plain straight talk. You can also see this integrity in the
cars they sell. They sell brand new Chevrolets and Buicks, but also all different kinds of used cars. They don’t get these cars from auction, though. They are all from trade-ins. Velasco likes doing trade-ins because it’s another way to help the customer. The only time they go to auction is to sell, never buy. All cars go through the 172 point inspection that GM requires whether or not the car is GM. This is the standard certified checklist and helps them make sure they are selling you a good car, not a piece of junk that will die two blocks away. Mid-America Auto Group is not just about sales, though. They are also driven to provide good service through their service department. As Velasco says, “The service doesn’t end at the sale.” Whether or not you purchased your car at Mid-America Auto Group, you can still bring your car to be serviced there. They have new lifts that help expand the service department so that more customers can be helped in a timely fashion. While they service both GM and Cadillac, they can diagnose and fix problems for almost any brand, even imports. They even have a GM “World Class Technician” which is one of the highest honors a mechanic can receive. Their service department is so excellent that Velasco is very proud of the work they do. All you do is click on the month, available day, and time and enter your car’s information. The people at Mid-America Auto Group do a great job of making your lives easier. JR Velasco and his team want you to see what they have to offer you, not just in the way of product, but in great customer service as well. As Velasco states, “We’re not concerned with being number one in Oklahoma, just concerned with being number one for you.” For Velasco it’s not about having the most sales in the state; it’s about making the right sales to his customers and following through with a positive relationship as well.

and the surrounding areas to see this wonderful use of our amphitheater. In fact, there is not a ticket price, but rather a suggested $4 donation. That way, lack of money will not prohibit a family from enjoying the show. They are not trying to make money; they simply want to recoup the productions costs and have fun. The production is family friendly. Both children and adults will enjoy this rendition of Shakespeare. Edwards wants to stay true to the script, of course, but he also likes to cheat it in a slightly different way. He has to come up with imaginative ways to make fairies disappear, go between the fairy world and the human world, and to make it clear that the humans are only being used as pawns. He also has to trim down the script to make the running time more friendly for children. Kids might not want to sit through three hours of Shakespeare, but an hour-and-a-half is definitely doable. His main goal is simply to bring theater and Shakespeare to the citizens of Ada, old and young alike. Edwards is proposing a new use for this old space. And, if it succeeds, this will be more than a one-time occurrence. Perhaps in the future we will have other plays performed in June, or even an entire Shakespeare in the Park summer program. This is a great opportunity to bring the community together, whether one is interested in acting or just watching a great & imaginative performance of a classic work of art. This helps build community while also giving the people in Ada something awesome to do in the summertime. People tend to flock to the park in the summertime. They bring their friends and children to frolic in the grass, play on the playgrounds, and go for walks. In many major cities summertime means something else for the park— Shakespeare in the Park. When I was growing up, I would go to Wintersmith Park and look longingly at the amphitheater, wishing that I could see a play in that space, and not have to travel to another city. Now, many years later, my young hope is being realized, thanks to the efforts of Kurt Edwards and Donna Graves. June 5–7 at 7:30 p.m. we will all have the chance to see “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” performed at the Wintersmith amphitheater. When Kurt Edwards first came to the ECU theater department almost three years ago, he was taken on a tour of the town. His first question when he saw the amphitheater was, “What theater is being done there?” When the response came as, “none,” he was shocked. It is such a great place to do theater and would be perfect for some summer Shakespeare. After taking a couple years to settle in, Edwards decided to make his dream a reality. He spoke with the city and was told he just needed to reserve it. He had the venue, now he just needed to make the play happen. He asked for the help of Donna Graves to act as production manager and help him come up with some great ideas for performing and staging the play. Even though students can get 3 hours of college credit for participating in this play, it is not just an ECU production. He wants it to be a community event and get the community involved. For instance, no one will be turned away from the auditions. Even if someone has zero acting experience, they can still be a part of the production; they might not have lines, but there is plenty of room for extras. The community involvement doesn’t stop at the production. Edwards invited the entire community of Ada

Cancer: the word no one wants to hear We all have someone close to us who has been diagnosed, survived, or died. Though much research is being done, more is still needed. However, the monetary needs go beyond cancer research. Needs such as housing, travel, and emotional support also require money. This is where Relay for Life comes in. Relay for Life is one of the biggest events that the American Cancer Society organizes. It brings communities together in order to raise money for these much needed projects. Everyone has their own personal reason to get involved. The Ada Board of Realtors is getting involved because of Robert Eberle, one of their colleagues who passed away. They formed the team Realtors for Robert in his memory. Robert Eberle’s whole life was dedicated to his church. He started the Ada Baptist Temple over 30 years ago. He truly cared about people. While the people in his church always came first, he cared about all those outside his church too. His daughter Jessica says that he wanted people to see Christ in him and his behaviors, thus bringing them closer to Christ as well. This belief in helping others is what drew him to real estate. He guided a lot of first time buyers through the process of making their purchase. He helped them navigate the loan process and find the home that would be right for their lifestyle and income. He saw real estate as an opportunity to help people. Instead of spending money in rent, they could buy a home and pursue the American Dream. According to Robert’s daughter, Jessica, he didn’t have “a serious bone in his body.” Everyone who talked to him heard a joke or story. He had a way of making everything funny and turning everything into something he could joke about. He could connect with everybody, no matter what. This sense of humor was necessary in a life filled with pain and illness. About ten years ago he lost a leg to issues with diabetes. A few years after that he lost his second leg. And a few years later the doctor told him he had cancer in five different locations. He didn’t give up though. He battled the cancer and continued to pastor his church and sell real estate for the last three years of his life. He died on March 4, 2014 at 5:20 in the evening. He is sorely missed by his wife of 43 years, Lois, his daughter, Jessica, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him or working with him. You always hear people talking about how “everybody loves” a certain person. Well, for Robert Eberle, this was most definitely true. He had a special place in the realtors hearts. They realized that they might be able to get a lot more people on board for a really great cause just because of the fact that everyone admired, respected, and loved him so much. The Relay for Life team, Realtors for Robert, was born out of his death, with Tisha Raney as team captain and Teena Brown as co-chair. It is wonderful that all the realtors are contributing, donating their time and support in honor of Robert Eberle. Perhaps the great love people had for him can lead to support of a truly great cause. One of the fundraising efforts that Realtors for Robert is engaging in is the sale of a new t-shirt designed by Cosby 12 • www.adahub.com
Clark. His father passed away from cancer in 2007, so he was very honored to be asked to create this new memorial for Robert Eberle. Cosby spoke at some length with Jess Eberle in order to come up with a design that would do Robert’s life justice. In the end, he used one of Robert’s most cherished quotes, “Thank you for giving to the Lord for I am a life that changed” to form a cross. A chancel banner encompasses it representing the idea of change. It is both playful and serious. It represents Robert’s sense of humor, but also his deep faith and belief in changing the lives of others. This year’s Relay for Life will be taking place at the Ada High School football field on Friday, May 30th starting at 6:00 p.m. and running until 1:00 a.m. The opening ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m. One of the wonderful things about this event is that it gathers survivors and their families together to support the living and mourn the dead. They have a Survivor’s Lap where all the cancer survivors take the first lap around the track. The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark as candles are placed around the track to remember those who have been lost. Then the Fight Back Ceremony helps encourage those with cancer and their families to keep hoping and keep fighting. The money raised goes to many great causes, including research. The Hope Lodge program helps provide comfortable places for patients and their families to stay while getting treatment. Road to Recovery helps people with transportation issues. Reach to Recovery helps pair breast cancer survivors with those still fighting in order to give them support, knowledge, and encouragement. Look Good…Feel Better is a program designed to help women battling cancer feel better by improving their self-image. Trained beauty professionals volunteer to help with wigs, makeup, nail care, skin care, and many other beauty issues. Many causes are in need of monetary support, and Relay for Life makes sure they get it. So help support Relay for Life this year by supporting Realtors for Robert and the Ada Board of Realtors. Once you have a child, their health becomes a primary concern. Every sniffle, sneeze, and spit-up becomes a question. Should I go to the doctor? Their health is so much more than just dealing with sickness, though. Their overall wellness is important, too. Ruth Weesner, MD, Sharon Weirick, APRN CNP, and the staff at Ada Pediatric Clinic believe that their job is not just treating sick kids, but promoting the overall wellness of the children, helping them to be the best that they can be. Dr. Ruth Weesner has been a pediatrician since 1989, but she’s been here in Ada for almost 10 years. She has always loved kids, even when she taught Sunday school in high school. When she was a senior in medical school she had to try out all different types of medical disciplines, but she was always really happy and excited when her patient was a kid. Being a pediatrician allows her to work with all ages of children. She really likes the babies because she gets to see them grow so quickly and every time can see how much more advanced they are. But every age is great. School aged kids are great to engage in conversation. And, while you wouldn’t use the term “conversation” when talking about most doctors, Weesner is different. One of the things that makes Ada Pediatric Clinic different is that they schedule more time for well visits than sick visits. But, if your child is sick, you don’t have to wait days or weeks to get her or him in to visit the doctor. They keep some slots available starting at 8:30 just for sick kids. You have to call at 8:00, but at least they can probably get seen that day. It is important to them that the child get well, but also stay well. Weesner studied medicine at Oral Roberts University where they focused on treating the whole person, even the whole family. You can go to the health department for shots, but not for the checkups. And sometimes shots aren’t enough. If a problem exists, they need to catch it before it goes too far. In addition to basic wellness issues, they will also help with chronic issues like asthma, diabetes, ADHD, and autism. One of the many wonderful things about Ada Pediatric Clinic is their expertise in autism. Sharon Weirick, APRN CNP (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certified Nurse Practitioner) has been certified in level 2 autism testing. She starts watching for signs of autism at 18 months to 3 years old. If she sees any indicators that the child might be autistic, she will recommend that they do a test. The test, though, is just some playtime that she observes. This fits right in with the overall push towards wellness at Ada Pediatric Clinic. If a child shows signs of autism, it is better that it is discovered early rather than later. This way the family, and the child, can get the help that they need right away. One of the most important things, though, is the attitude they have towards children. Many kids fear the doctor so Weesner and Weirick try to combat this with thoughtful14 • www.adahub.com
ness, friendliness, and imagination. For instance, Weesner doesn’t wear her white coat to work because she is afraid it will make the children nervous. Weirick covers her stethoscope in a green dinosaur to engage the child’s imagination. The lobby has toys, kid sized chairs, and a children’s movie playing. But the most fascinating thing is the mural which encompasses all the walls of the waiting room. It moves from a rainforest, to a beach, to an underwater scene. The individual examination rooms also have toys and are decorated with different themes: Noah, space, ABC’s, sports, beach, and fish. Ada Pediatric Clinic is located in the Doctor’s Park building, downstairs, right next to the lab, at 1414 East Arlington St., Suite 1700. They accept all major insurance providers as well as Soonercare. They can help you with a sick kid, keeping the kid well, fluoride treatments on their teeth (since pediatric dentists are few and far between, and have long waits to get in), immunizations, medicine, and also natural alternatives whenever it is appropriate. They recently went electronic with their records, which helps them modernize, but also helps the patient because of their patient portal. You can also request an appointment, even if you are a new patient. This brings a new level of involvement and information to the parent while helping the clinic help you as well.
