Style, lifestyle, livability—these are primary concerns to address when it comes to designing your custom built home. Use this Design Guide as a roadmap to build your home. Talk with your Homeownership counselor about any questions and concerns you might have about the homebuilding process—and feel free to visit our Design Centers for inspiration. You’ve got this.
Step 1
Dream it. Love it. Pin it. Whether you like to cut-and-paste, or pin images online—your inspiration photos are needed! Begin the design process by saving house photos that speak to your heart. Utilize Pinterest, Instagram, and Google Images. Find those well-loved home magazines you’ve saved through the years, the dog-eared design books, and the travel photos. Remember what makes you feel most at home, and express it.

Sort & Assemble Whether you choose to utilize online Pinterest boards or paper and scissors doesn’t matter. What’s important is taking your bevy of ideas and categorizing them into spaces: kitchens, bath, bedrooms, great rooms, and outdoor living. Don’t forget to create files for garage and storage, too! • •
Step 3
Make notes on each photograph: what is it about this design that speaks to you? Making notes of your preferences now will help you explain your vision later. Sometimes an idea is all about a feeling. That’s great, too! Write down how the photo makes you feel: cozy, warm, clean, modern, homey—this is a great way to define style.
Get In-Focus It’s time to prioritize what’s most important to you in your new custom home. Is it square footage? Soaring ceilings? Quartz countertops? As you sift through all of the amazing images you’ve saved, consider your order of preference. This is a key step in refining your vision and building an accurate budget. When you meet with your Homeownership Counselor, you’ll create an overall project budget. Our goal is to marry this financial plan with your custom home vision.
