This year the classic was played on Wednesday nights. With AC pennant matches being played other nights we decided to spread the event out over several weeks to accommodate as many croquet players as possible. Games were played in great spirit. A lovely atmosphere to play croquet. As with previous Millswood Classic events, the result came down to the last hoop in the last game. David Maunder made a 3-yard jump on the 13th to win the match and the tournament with partner Barbara Bertram. If he hadn’t made the jump or if he had put the opposition through the Millswood Classic would have been won by Helen Cook and Colleen Lane. In keeping with tradition, the Millswood members provided a very nice supper on each of the nights. The closing night was celebrated with a party atmosphere in the new club house.
NORWOOD ASSOCIATION CROQUET (AC) TOURNAMENT
The event comprised of 4 seeded blocks with 8 players in each block playing a round robin. A high-quality field took part including most of the members of the South Australian AC State Team who treated the event as their final practice session before heading off to the Interstate Eire Cup championships in Melbourne. Dwayne emerged as the winner in Block 1 with 6 wins from his seven games, including 3 triple peels and a sextuple peel. David Short (Norwood) was second with 5 wins.

Congratulations Jane Horton On Your New Appointment

Newly elected SA Board
Member Jane Horton is rather new to the sport of croquet only starting about 9 months ago. She attended a ‘Come n Try’ session at the Mt Barker club. The strategic aspect of playing Golf Croquet is what she enjoys. Jane grew up in Darwin and enjoys other sports such as swimming and sailing. She is married and has two grown up children. Jane worked for the Not for Profit sector including being CEO for Cancer Care Centre and a volunteer manager at the Hutt Street Centre. Her role on the Management Board is that of being a Director, where she will utilise her skills and knowledge of Governance, Policy and Procedures and Management. Maryborough Now Playing Gateball
Members of Point Lookout Croquet Club in Maryborough, Queensland held their first Gateball play day on Thursday 16th March and were joined by other visitors, including a member from Hervey Bay Croquet Club. In heat wave conditions (and using as much available shade as possible), players participated in practice activities under the guidance of local coach Oliver Beverly and National Gateball Coordinator Ros Crowe, before enjoying a team game together. Morning tea in air conditioned comfort provided relief from the heat and some treats before players braved the heat again to play a few games of doubles and triples. We welcome Point Lookout to the Gateball Australia community,

SENIORS’ WEEK - SUTHERLAND CROQUET CLUB

During the NSW Government Seniors’ Week from 1 – 12 February 2023, Sutherland Croquet Club hosted three very successful free 2 hour “Come and Try” sessions, together with a stall at the Seniors’ Expo organised by Sutherland Shire Council. The Expo was a good opportunity to talk to large crowds of people and to network with other stall holder groups, to let them know about croquet and what a great game it is for both men and women. We also had a couple of mallets and some balls for those wanting to “give it a go”. At the “Come and Try” sessions, the visitors were given a short introduction to croquet by the very knowledgeable John Eddes, followed by a game with members acting as facilitators for each group.
Vale Stephen Howes
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Stephen Howes on the 11 February. Stephen made a huge contribution to croquet, at Cammeray Croquet Club, at State and national levels, and internationally. He was President of Cammeray Club and coached a large proportion of their new members. He was an outstanding referee, a first class examining Referee, and a splendid Tournament Referee for major tournaments.

There was a large turnout of croquet players at the funeral on 22 February, with members from Cammeray, EDSACC and Mosman.
At the Cammeray AGM on 4 February, Stephen was made a Life Member of the Club for his outstanding contribution.
A Devonshire Tea was then served and a further game played. This was a great response for our amazing hard-working members resulting in six of those seniors having such a great time, they are now being coached and wanting to join our Club.

Australasian Police And Emergency Services Games
Central Coast croquet players representing the NSW Police have taken two gold medals and a silver at the Australasian Police and Emergency Service Games held recently in New Zealand.

The week-long event saw 3000 participants compete in many sporting fields.
Retired police officers Phil Monds and Darren Warner from EDSACC Croquet Club played in the doubles competition held at Rotorua Croquet Club.
After losing their first match to another NSW team they knuckled down and won their next matches against Rotorua, leading to a highly anticipated match against the highly fancied Victorian team for the gold medal.
Warner and Monds came out knocking the Victorians’ balls all over the lawn and scoring hoops from all angles to win the match 7–3 and take out the gold.
A broken foot wasn’t going to stop local police sergeant Craig Unger from competing in the singles competition.
Despite breaking his foot just weeks earlier, Unger bravely played in a moon boot to take out second place.
After taking down most of the field with amazing jump shots he could not match the mighty New Zealand champion Jim Brough in the final but brought home the silver.
The next Australasian Police and Emergency Service Games will be held in Tasmania 2025.
