Textile Economies

Power and Value from the Local to the Transnational - Edited by Walter E. Little and Patricia A. McAnany

978-0-7591-2061-7 $85.00, Cloth Imprint: AltaMira Press October 2011 326pp Size: 6 x 9 Series: Society for Economic Anthropology Monograph Series Category: Anthropology (Economic Anthropology)

The Book: Textiles have been a highly valued and central part of the politics of human societies across culture divides and over millennia. The economy of textiles provides insight into the fabric of social relations, local and global politics, and diverse ideologies. Textiles are a material element of society that fosters the study of continuities and disjunctions in the economic and social realities of past and present societies. From stick-loom weaving to transnational factories, the production of cloth and its transformation into clothing and other woven goods offers a way to study the linkages between economics and politics. This volume is oriented around a number of themes: textile production, textiles as trade goods, textiles as symbols, textiles in tourism, and textiles in the transnational processes. Textile Economies appeals to a broad range of scholars interested in the intersection of material culture, political economy, and globalization, such as archaeologists, cultural anthropologists, economists, museum curators, and historians. The Authors:

Walter E. Little is assistant professor of Anthropology at the University of Albany, SUNY, New York, and director of the Ethnographic Field School in Guatemala. He is the author of Mayas in the Marketplace and co-author of Mayas in Postwar Guatemala. Patricia A. McAnany is Kenan Eminent Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is the author of Ancestral Maya Economies in Archaeological Perspective and Living with the Ancestors: Kinship and Kingship in Ancient Maya Society.

The Neglected Impact of Non-Economic Factors on the Development of Financial Crises and Governmental Responses The Mexican and Malaysian Cases of the 1990s - By Fahrettin Sümer

978-0-7618-5646-7 $29.95, Paper Imprint: University Press of America October 2011 256pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Business & Economics (International / General)

The Book:

This book considers how a financial crisis develops and how a government responds to a financial crisis. In an attempt to shed light on these questions, it closely examines two cases: Mexico during the Mexican Peso Crisis of 1994 to 1995 and Malaysia during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 to 1998. The author argues that economic explanations of financial crises fail to fully answer these questions since they do not pay enough attention to non-economic factors stemming from a county’s political, societal, institutional and external contexts. The examination of the Mexico and Malaysia cases illustrates this argument and shows that multiple non-economic factors--domestic political, societal, institutional, psychological, and ideological factors as well as external influences and pressures--can play roles as significant as economic factors. Interplay of these non-economic factors with economic ones brought these financial crises and shaped the Mexican and the Malaysian governments’ policy behaviors.

The Author:

Fahrettin Sümer earned his M.A. degree in political science from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in international studies from the University of South Carolina.

The X-Tax Revisited

Challenges and Solutions for Replacing the U.S. Income Tax - By Alan D. Viard and Robert Carroll

978-0-84474-394-3 $49.95, Cloth Imprint: AEI Press November 2011 200pp Size: 6 X 9 CO-Publisher: American Enterprise Institute Category: (Taxation/General)

The Book: The United States is alone among industrialized countries in having no broad-based consumption tax at the national level. Yet, economic analysis suggests that consumption taxation is superior to income taxation because it does not penalize saving and investment. This book proposes to completely replace the income tax system with a progressive consumption tax, known as the “X-tax. The X-tax achieves progressivity by applying graduated tax rates to wages and a high flat tax rate to business cash flow, which reflects consumption financed from wealth accumulated prior to the reform and from above-normal business investment returns, which largely accrue to well-off households. Because the X tax is relatively unfamiliar, there is concern about how it can be implemented. The X-Tax Revisited sets forth solutions to commonly perceived problems concerning the taxation of pensions and fringe benefits, business firms, financial intermediaries, international transactions, owner-occupied housing, state and local governments, and nonprofit institutions. By adopting these approaches, the United States can move to a progressive tax system that no longer penalizes saving and investment. The Authors: Alan D. Viard is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Robert Carroll is vice president for economic policy at the Tax Foundation and co-director of the Center for Public Finance and Research at American University.

Where Credit is Due

Bringing Equity to Credit and Housing After the Market Meltdown - Edited by Christy Rogers and john a. powell 978-0-7618-5606-1 $38.95, Paper Imprint: University Press of America November 2011 380pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Economics (Economic Policy)

The Book: While much recent attention has been focused on the US subprime lending and foreclosure crisis, little has been said about its radically-disparate impact. Drawing upon history as well as insight into the current crisis, this book shows that this crisis is not an anomaly, especially for people of color; nor is it over. People of color have been excluded from wealth-building opportunities via homeownership continuously throughout United States history, from the outright denial of credit and residential racial discrimination, to federallysponsored urban renewal programs. The subprime lending and foreclosure crisis is predicted to strip a quarter of a trillion dollars in wealth from black and Latino homeowners. It has reversed home ownership gains for people of color and has decimated neighborhoods across the United States while impacting local, regional, national, and international economies. The consequences are devastating. This collection of essays provides a framework for creating equitable policy and ultimately building more stable communities for all Americans. The Author: Christy Rogers is a senior researcher at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University. Rogers focuses on equitable neighborhood revitalization and housing policy issues, and has jointly authored many Institute reports, including “Communities of Opportunity: A Framework for a More Equitable and Sustainable Future for All. john a. powell is the executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. He holds the Gregory H. Williams Chair in Civil Rights & Civil Liberties at the Moritz College of Law. Previously, powell founded and directed the Institute of Race and Poverty at the University of Minnesota. He has also served as director of legal services in Miami, Florida and was the national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Dumped On, Bond Market Spits Crises! - By C. Fiifi Odoom

978-0-7618-5617-7 $26.95, Paper Imprint: University Press of America September 2011 158pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Business & Economics (International / General)

The Book:

Dumped On, Bond Market Spits Crises! explores the root causes of the once-a-decade financial crises, especially the crisis of 2007-2008. This book is not a thesis affirming the cultural doctrinaire of “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” as necessary vainglories or desirable initiation ritual into our pop culture; what it does, however, is point to the bond market as exactly that. Much more so than the post-war times, the bond market is the key financier of mainstream culture. It can be hard to resist the lure of credit that the bond market enables. Under this climate, all it takes is a good shock and a dose of fear for this bond market to make its rounds with crises.

The Author:

C. Fiifi Odoom is the research director for Asibir House, a consultancy group, and a professor at Douglas College, New Westminster, B.C., Canada. He is the author of Bond Market Root of Financial Crises?: Derivatives as Transformational Ponzi Traps in World Financial System and a forthcoming book, Mutual Fund of Social Programs: Does Canada have any High-Yielding Stock to offer the U.S.?. Odoom also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Science and Global Studies Journal.
