Teaching with the Wind
Spirituality in Canadian Education - By Michael Dallaire
978-0-7618-5553-8 $27.95, Paper Imprint: University Press of America October 2011 180pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Education (Philosophy & Social Aspects)
The Book:
Teaching with the Wind tackles the question, “Can education for a Canadian civic spirituality bridge the sometimes incommensurable worldviews of faith-based schools and secular public schools? An affirmative answer is offered based on two foundations. First, that a national soul can be identified and thus serve as the content of spiritual education in Canada schools. Second, that a reconstructed approach to the contemplation-in-action method found in world religions and philosophy can provide an appropriate pedagogy for Canadian spiritual education. This book argues that education for civic spirituality is of paramount importance as Canada continues its transition from a Judeo-Christian and bicultural nation to a multi-faith and multicultural nation within a secular democracy. It offers a direction that would enrich religious and secular education systems as well as Canada as a whole.
The Author:
Michael Dallaire is an educator and writer. He is the author of Contemplation in Liberation: A Method for Spiritual Education in the Schools (2001). Dallaire holds a doctorate in the philosophy of education from the University of Toronto and a master of arts in theology from St. Paul University in Ottawa. He has lived and worked throughout Canada, served for over twenty years as a school chaplain, and currently lives in Vancouver.

Tyranny of the Textbook
An Insider Exposes Why Curriculum Adoptions Undermine Education Reforms - By Beverlee Jobrack 978-1-4422-1141-4 $35.00, Cloth Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers November 2011 248pp Size: 6 X 9 Category: Education (Curriculum and Instruction) The Book:
Educational reforms and standards have been a topic of public debate for decades, with the latest go-round being the US State Common Core Curriculum Standards. But time and again those reforms have failed, and each set of standards, no matter how new and different, has had little impact on improving student achievement. Why? The textbooks. The textbooks never change, aren’t based on the latest research on how children learn, and don’t present lessons based on current pedagogy. In Tyranny of the Textbook, Beverlee Jobrack, a retired educational publisher, sheds light on why this happens. She gives an engaging and fascinating look behind-the-scenes of how K-12 textbooks are developed, written, adopted, and sold. And, perhaps most importantly, she clearly spells out how the system can change so that reforms and standards have a shot at finally being effective. Did you know? —Reform efforts have focused on writing and rewriting standards and tests, but publishers continue to publish the same curriculum. —School districts and states don’t use effectiveness as a criterion for evaluating and purchasing textbooks. —Publishers don’t offer textbooks with better content or the latest teaching methods because teachers don’t want textbooks that require them to write new lesson plans. —Teachers report that they don’t rely on a textbook in their class, but research shows that they do. —Three companies publish 75 percent of the K-12 educational materials. —Those three companies are producing similar programs with the same instructional strategies, none of which require teachers to change their practices significantly. —Publishers write textbooks for California and Texas. All the other markets have to make do with books only superficially adjusted for their states. The Author:
Beverlee Jobrack spent more than 25 years weathering the ups and downs, mergers and acquisitions of educational publishing, first with Merrill Publishing. She retired in 2008 as editorial director of SRA/ McGraw-Hill. Before starting her career in publishing, she was a middle school English/Literature teacher and was named a teacher-of-the-year for her Massachusetts district. She lives in Columbus, Ohio.

Executive Intelligence The Leader’s Edge
-By Irving H. Buchen 978-1-61048-077-2 $75.00, Cloth 978-1-61048-078-9 $36.95, Paper Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Education August 2011 256pp Size: 6 X 9 Category: Education (Leadership)
The Book: Executive Intelligence zeros in on leadership smarts and notes that in all lists compiled by leadership experts, head hunters, and boards of directors the only trait that appears in all is intelligence. Obvious? No, because typically leadership savvy regularly trumps smarts. That is unfortunate because it obscures the cultivation and development of how leaders think, speculate, conceive, and problem solve their own firms and the way they lead. Executive intelligence like emotional intelligence acts like an advanced scout sizing up situations, identifying mine fields, creating contingencies, developing last minute ways out, and then acting like the artful dodger. In the process, the leader develops a special kind of intelligence tied to and defining the kind if leader he or she is; and that ultimately generates the leader’s edge and comparative advantage. “Dr. Buchen’s book is both big and bold - in range and depth. Most leadership studies offer one or two ideas often puffed up to justify publication as a separate volume. But this is a cornucopia of smart leader applications. It is about time that the special intelligence of leaders is appreciated and credited with its impact on successful companies. In fact, I am planning to purchase a copy for every one of my vice presidents.”—Paul Gilbert, CEO of Medvanti The Author: Irving H. Buchen is a member of the business doctoral faculty at Capella University and author of eight books and over 150 articles.

The Forgotten Room
Inside a Public Alternative School for At-Risk Youth - By Mary Hollowell - Foreword by Ashley Bryan 978-0-7391-3496-2 $29.95, Paper Imprint: Lexington Books August 2011 190pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Education (At-Risk)
The Book:
Located in a rapidly-growing county in the southeastern United States, Peachtree Alternative School is a dumping ground for chronically disruptive students that regular teachers can no longer handle. The school has some of the toughest kids that society has to offer: kids who have dealt drugs, attempted rape, brought weapons to school, and made terrorist threats. Neglect, understaffing, and overcrowding create a volatile situation; Teachers survive threats, assaults, brawls, and rampages with their therapeutic philosophies barely intact. The Forgotten Room is a teacher survival story. It examines the darker side of American education through chronicling the course of Peachtree Alternative School’s tenth and final year. It offers a glimmer of hope in the safe zones created by hardworking teachers, but it is also a cautionary tale about the consequences of bureaucrats neglecting troubled teens. Hollowell’s multidisciplinary book provides a rare look at public alternative schooling in America. This gritty and compelling ethnography is part of a growing movement in academia to make ethnographic studies more accessible. It exposes punitive school policy, demonstrates the prison-industrial complex, and reveals school board corruption. In addition, it pinpoints quality teaching of chronically disruptive youth. As ethnographic nonfiction, The Forgotten Room breaks down the walls between social science and literature.

Mary Hollowell is associate professor at Clayton State University.

The Book:
Today’s world creates challenges that are overwhelming for so many children and their families. Living without the necessary supports and sometimes the basics forces children to seek what they believe they need to survive. Many have become throwaways and move to the streets and the underbelly of society. As a society, we often assume that they have behavior disorders or have escaped their homes and just for a thrill. Yet for many of these children it is a choice between surviving or being abused, neglected, or killed at the hands of a supposedly trusted adult. This book is a portrait of their struggles, their challenges, and their victories. Children in Crisis is a resource to build awareness, understanding, and solutions for educators, parents, and anyone working with children and adolescents.

Cure Student Underachievement Clinical Practice for School Leaders -By Philip Esbrandt and Bruce Hayes
978-1-61048-536-4 $75.00, Cloth 978-1-61048-537-1 $36.95, Paper Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Education October 2011 206pp Size: 7 x 10 CO-Publisher: The American Association of School Administrators Category: Education (Administration)
The Book: Cure Student Underachievement is the culmination of the authors’ research, practice, and experience as principals, superintendents, graduate professors, and consultants in efforts to improve school performance and increase student achievement. Searching for the real causes of underperformance, the authors explored problem-solving strategies in several fields. The authors find that clinical practice identifies the root causes rather than the symptoms of problems, focusing valuable time, resource, and energy on prescriptions with greater promise for improved performance health. The concepts of diagnosis, prescription, and prognosis establish a foundation for improved planning and problem solving. This book introduces practicing leaders and leaders-in-training to the protocols of clinical practice by taking the reader through the twelve steps of the clinical cycle with specific strategies and exercises to provide practice in the application, use, and assessment of the model. The Authors: Phil Esbrandt has served in all line positions in public education from teacher through superintendent in very challenging schools and districts. He has been known as a “performance turnaround” specialist long before it became fashionable to talk about such a position. Bruce Hayes has been involved in the study and application of educational reform strategies on five continents. He has served as a teacher, coach, superintendent of schools, and graduate adjunct professor.

The Book:
For years, the US has considered school dropout rates as a problem occurring at the high-school level. However, this is actually an issue that originates and develops in elementary school. Authors Gregory Hickman and Randy Heinrich show how high school dropouts in many ways drop out of school long before they reach high school. Using a comprehensive systems approach, Hickman and Heinrich argue that our policy makers, educators, parents, and community members need to scrutinize our education system, moving past fixing short-term symptoms to engaging core, long-term problems for deep, effective change. For real change to take place, our national agenda needs to address the dropout problem at the elementary level, long before kids enter high school.
The Authors:
Gregory P. Hickman, Ph.D. is director of the Arizona Dropout Initiative. Randy S. Heinrich served for over a decade as an educator in a rural Arizona school district and is currently on the faculty for Argosy University Online

Education and Its Discontents
Teaching, the Humanities, and the Importance of a Liberal Education in the Age of Mass Information - By Mark Moss
978-0-7391-6988-9 $65.00, Cloth Imprint: Lexington Books October 2011 218pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Education (Computers & Technology)
The Book:
Education and Its Discontents is an exploration of how the traditional educational environment, particularly in the post-secondary world, is changing as a consequence of the influx of new technology. Students come to the classroom or lecture hall expecting to have their habits and tastes, gleaned from the online world, replicated in an Educational environment. Faculty who do not adapt face enormous obstacles and faculty that do adapt run the risk of eroding the integrity of what they have been trained to teach. Students now have access to myriad of technologies that instead of supplementing the educational process, have actually taken it over. Issues that run from plagiarism to the erosion of the humanities are now rampant concerns in the post secondary world. Behavior issues, YouTube videos, cell phones, and the incessant clicking of the computer keys are just a few of the technologies altering the educational landscape. Moss discusses that it is now not only how we learn, but what we continue to teach, and how that enormously important legacy is protected. This book argues that education has changed and the supremacy of the book and the lecture is now open for debate. What has been gained over the last five hundred years is now susceptible to the vagaries of technology, which compel us to question their continuing relevance.
The Author:
Mark Moss received his doctorate in history of education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Currently, he is a writer and consultant living in Toronto. This is his fifth book.
