“How to Build for Creative Learning? A School from Bench to Building�. The objective was to design a K-8 School that facilitated creative learning. This architectural studio dealt with a real client (Springfield School District, the City of Springfield, and the Sustainable City Year), a real site, and real issues. The challenge was re-thinking the notion of a school, and how the built environment affects the education of young minds. Maple Elementary, Thurston Elementary, Clackamas High, and Happy Valley Elementary/Middle Schools were studied. The proposed site is located in the southward expansion of the City of Springfield, near the Willamette River. Nine of the fourteen acres of site, are on an existing wetland. This presents opportunities for outdoor learning and experiences for students. The school district plans to build here within the next ten to fifteen years. 7.

Figure Ground Study, City of Springfield The local schools are displayed in the graphic below. The black represents the built environment of the City of Springfield. The proposed site is located in the southern most part of Springfield. This area is currently under extreme development as the city grows to the south.

Floor Plan & Parking Layout The idea was to separate the parking in order to minimize the amount of paving over the site preserving the natural wetland appearance. In doing so, parking on the backside of the school is available for after hours use adjacent to the gymnasium.

1.1 Orphanage, Guadalajara Mexico “A Place of Belonging”. The site was located in Guadalajara, the 2nd largest city in Mexico. Here 4 out of every 10 citizens has been a victim of crime. Graffiti can be found on every street corner. Both barbed and electric wire are the norm to discourage such behavior, even in the wealthiest of neighborhoods. The site is located near the governor’s mansion and takes up an entire city block. The objective was to build an orphanage for children that would feel warm and inviting. To create “a place of belonging”and to facilitate positive interaction and relationships among residents. The overall safety of the children being was one of the biggest concerns.

Reception Perspective Being in a crime stricken community, the Orphanage required heightened security. One way to accomplish this was through increased visibility. The image above shows a view out from behind the reception desk. The receptionist has several important lines of sight. One looking straight down the main axis of the site (shown above) and another aimed toward the parking lot and front entry to see who is coming and going.

Dormitory Section Above is a section of one of the dormitories. The idea with the dorms was to fill each room with natural light, and create transitional space to the outdoors. Each room was designed to house 4 to 5 children. The transition of interior to exterior was solved with a small deck on both floors, to allow the kids to come out of their dorm and see friends down on the playing fields.

1.2 Outdoor Center, Springfield Oregon This studio focused on the design of an Outdoor Center on the Springfield Millrace, where it rejoins the Willamette River. This waterway was built in 1852 to power City’s earliest industries. The mission was to provide a vibrant place for young people to come and enjoy the outdoors. The building had to support equipment rentals, along with storage. Hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking were some of the activities. The building reacts to the natural slope and steps down toward the water, creating an intimate relationship with the natural surroundings. Goals of the project were to protect the habitat of wildlife, and allow for the building to coexist with the natural environment. The images to the left were early concept models of how the building would respond with the slope and the millrace itself.

1.3 SASS project, designBridge, Eugene Oregon Created in 2005,“designBridge is a multi-disciplinary, student organization linking University of Oregon with the surrounding community by offering design and design-build services to clients.� For our project, we redesigned the backyard of a local non-profit business, Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS). The main issues were the dilapidated deck, the overgrown vegetation, and the unutilized yard. We started with a design studio to propose a plan of action, developing a cohesive site plan and budget to relandscape the yard and design a deck to meet the needs of the clients. Making the yard accessible to all was important. Therefore ADA specifications were used in ramping down to the yard. We then dove into demolition of the existing deck and started construction, discovering many surprises along the way.

1.5 Independent Study Le Corbusier, Villa Savoye The image above is a study model of Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye. This was a model that I constructed out of white museum board. The model displays my ability to pick out important details and elements to represent the built environment. Along with a model, I researched Le Corbusier and his views of design.

2.0 The Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland Oregon



2.0 The Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland Oregon Design competition to design and build a piece of furniture to facilitate various activities for public use in the museum context; exploring design and fabrication issues surrounding the idea of interaction. The design competition consisted of seventeen architecture students from the University of Oregon. I placed 2nd overall in the design competition. As a group we fabricated the final piece. This piece of furniture is unique in the sense that it supports the use of new technologies. Tablet devices, such as the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy, have many uses. In the museum context, we created our table-top to support such a device. The challenge was to make a piece that was aesthetically beautiful, yet does not overshadow the piece being displayed within the realm of the museum. By using a tablet device to share information, it allows the viewer to interact with the exhibit. Our furniture provides a safe place to rest the device, while touring the museum.



Orientation & Purpose The piece is constructed to function in two completely different orientations. When the furniture is placed horizontally, it functions as a bench. It comfortably seats two in this position. When it is placed upright, it serves as a counter top with two heights. The lower height caters to children or those in wheelchairs, while the upper level is a standard bar height. 41.

3.0 Watercolor Winslow Homer The watercolor painting above is a reproduction of one of Winslow Homer’s famous paintings. This was an assignment that I did in my multi media course. The assignment entailed picking a famous painting and mimicking the color and textures within the painting. 43.



3.1 Watercolor Golden Retriever The watercolor painting to the left, I did in my free time of the family dog. Gretta is an energetic eight month old Golden Retriever. I started by first drawing lines that highlighted some of her distinct features with ink. Then preformed several washes of color to add depth and texture to her coat. 45.

4.0 Detail Photographs The photos to the left are a series of pattern studies, representing objects in detail. These were taken at a local school in my hometown. With my photography I try to capture the true beauty of everyday objects that often get overlooked by the common eye. These ideas strongly reflect my views of Architectural Design.

5.1 The Haceta Bridge, ink drawing The drawing above is a sketch of the Haceta Bridge, near Florence Oregon. It is an ink drawing. I enjoy doing quick sketches when I travel, when time permits.


5.2 The Hammer, pencil drawing This sketch, was a pencil drawing of a hammer. The goal of this sketch was to draw with great detail and achieve a realistic representation of the tool. 51.
