Conceptual Design: L i fe J o u r n e y Description: I chose this concept for my 2D model to illustrate the general interpretation of life, in terms of its journey. It demonstrates the collision between the individual (yellow), and the obstacles (grey) faced along the way. The beginning is shown on the left side of the board, where both the individual and the obstacles start off separately, and it is evident how the obstacles keep growing until it faces the individual. Throughout the course of life, the obstacles will make or break the individual, but eventually one stands tall, picking up his/her pieces (lessons) along the way. Color Scheme: According to the Psychology of colors, one of the representations of Yellow is energy, and so I chose that color to symbolize humans as the embodiment of energy. On the other hand, I chose grey for neutrality to represent both good (white) and bad (black) obstacles. Human Obstacles

Residential Project: B e a c h H o u s e Aim: The goal of this project was to build a residential unit in any given land, anywhere in the world. My choice was Sidi Abd el Rahman, North Coast, Egypt, specifically on the outskirts of the luxurious Marassi resort.

Choice of Materials: Due to the climatic conditions of the Mediterranean Sea region inside the Egyptian borders, in addition to the most commonly used ones, I have chosen Sand Beige Fieldstone for the building material, as well as for the facade. Mood Board: Sand Beige Fieldstone

Residential Project: B e a c h H o u s e Description: This residential space was designed for a family of four, with customized jacuzzis in both main bathrooms, a walk-in closet in the master bedroom, and bunk beds in the other bedroom. There are two porches, one extending the bedrooms’ spaces, and the other in the first floor, with a bench swing and custom furniture for outdoor dining. Additionally, it is connected to a staircase leading straight to the garden, gazebo study, and private pool, not to mention providing direct access to the beach.

Educational Project: K i n d e rg a r te n Description: This project is designed using two types of brick, brown and natural white. Given the typology, colorful tones and schemes are necessary, which is why that is the design strategy for the interior and the playground. I chose to have the exterior subtle, yet inviting.

Landscape: In terms of designing the site, lush and extensive greenery was chosen, to complement the adjacent park, Al Wasl Park, northwest of the project site. As well as it adds a sense of adventure for the children while they are outdoors.

17

Educational Project: K i n d e rg a r te n Classroom Layout: Using the Tetris concept, I have designed the classroom’s interior accordingly. It is apparent in the furniture layout; the structure of the shelves, the color of the carpet (blue), as well as the chairs (blue, red, and yellow), and last but not least, the colors of the interior walls. The walls are painted blue and green alternately. All these elements contribute to one another, creating the colorful scheme of Tetris.

Exhibition Space: To y M u s e u m Inspiration: Given the typology, I chose my inspiration accordingly. It is the Beyblade toy. It is a spinning top with a narrow bottom. Not only that, but it contains a “beast, which is the source of power.

Form: The Toy Museum is simple in form, with the ground floor narrower than the first floor; as the main exhibition space extends beyond the former, it is supported by steel beams and trusses structure.

Strength: For this building, the source of power is not a beast, but rather solar panels. These panels provide sunlight as well as generate the power for the whole structure. It is an element of sustainability.

The UpHill Quest: I chose this concept for this project as to connect education with a fluctuating journey. The climb is reflected in the vertical circulation at the three intersections of the main building, while the quest is reflected in the exaggerated horiztonal of the main building. Students’ main activities are located from the first floor above (Classrooms and activity rooms in the first floor; library and basketball court in the second floor). The site circulation is not rectilinear to portray the path of the educational journey; not to mention the gathering area on the ground floor is designed like an amphitheater, to also symbolize the climb. Institutional Project: A ra b Le a g u e H e a d q u a r te rs Description: The Arab League has been in decline for a few years now, and so this project’s aim was to revive the Arab League, not only as an organization, but as a beneficial institution. Therefore, an education factor was integrated in this design strategy. Site: The site for this project is located in the center of Old Dubai, by the Creek, where the civilization of the United Arab Emirates started. The area is designed with vernacular architecture, maintaining the culture of the United Arab Emirates, so the challenge here was to design a new and modern headquarters with the education facility while still keeping the United Arab Emirates’ cultural integrity. Institutional Project: A ra b Le a g u e H e a d q u a r te rs Design Strategy: For privacy and security reasons, the Assembly Hall is located in the center and elevated as to isolate from the functions of the secondary buildings (Education and Retail on the bottom corner; Offices, Gallery, and Restaurant on the top corner).

Education: The Education typology I chose is the Arts. The facility is equipped with workshops for literature, performing arts, media arts, and visual arts. OFFICES

To separate the Arab League from the Education part of the structure, I decided that different materials was the best approach. For the education side, I used Steel and Titanium, influenced by Frank Gehry's designs, while the Arab League is purely concrete with sand beige plaster to maintain the vernacular architecture of Dubai.

Residential Project: B e a c h B u n g a l o w

Aim: The purpose of this assignment was to create a white model, and customize renderings with Photoshop, verifying the selection of atmosphere, materials, etc. Design Strategy (Day):

40

For the building composition, stone cladding was suitable

to complement the rocky beach scene, in addition to its aesthetic nature. For the pergola structure and front porch, I used white wood finishes to contrast the dark color of the stone. For the the pergola shading, door and window frames, as well as exterior lights, I kept them simple with white paint, emphasizing the stone material. As for the platform, I used natural wood to smoothly transition from the dark stone to the white sandy beach. Overall, I used natural materials for its raw beauty and sustainability purposes.

Residential Project: B e a c h B u n g a l o w Atmoshpere: Clear blue skies, soft white scattered clouds, and birds flying around, is the typical beach weather, especially in the summer. I chose this atmosphere to give a serenity and soothing effect, conveying reminiscence and longing to those summer days when one can enjoy his or her time and chill by the beach. The water’s state at the time of taking the picture also contributes to that peaceful effect.

41

Residential Project: B e a c h B u n g a l o w

Design Strategy: For my lighting rendering, I used spotlights to highlight the pergola seating area, and exterior lighting along the walls to give a subtle effect emphasizing the cladding.

The Conceptt: The Twilight Bark is a canine behavior introduced in the classic Disney movie, 101 Dalmations. Basically, during the hours of Twilight, dogs begin to bark. The purpose is passing on information, gossiping, and keeping in touch with one another. In the movie, it was a call for help, and Dubai desperately needs to answer that call.

Type A

2

Description: Housing communities in Dubai are not neighbor-friendly. The way they were and are being designed is that one goes to his or her car, drives off, comes back, stays secluded at home, with no means of human interaction. One cannot meet the neghbors because the architecture doesn't allow it. Therefore, this housing project needed to be different; it needed to draw in a community; it needed to establish human bonds. That's where The Twilight Bark comes in.

Design Elements: Type A (End Unit) and Type B (Middle Unit) each have their own special attributes. Using the Bay Window, Type A creates a functional seating area to overlook the townhouses' alley. As for Type B, rather than utilizing the Bay Window like Type A, the exaggerated ground floor height of 5 meters is split at almost half to accomodate an outdoor seating area, enough for 5 people. On nice days, it would be great to eat outdoors.

The Theme: The theme of this project is centralized around the Bay Window, and how an extended part of a building can be utilized and not just for aesthetic and space-enhacing remedies. The theme of the project as a whole, including the central courtyard is influenced by 1920s London, in addition to inspiration from St. James Park.

The Site To create the desired community, aside from the ground floor of the apartment buildings, a central courtyard is designed to attract all directions of the site, including the townhouses (speciallydesigned pathway). The site's facilities include a central pool, two playgrounds for the children, several pergolas for hanging around, as well as a gazebo for barbecues, and picnic benches across from it. A park sensation was created to derive a sense of community, and make the area feel like home - a feeling Dubai's architecture lacks providing.
