Spring Clean Your Beauty Bag Ah, springtime in Ireland: cherry blossom, blue skies and soft dappled sunshine…for about five minutes, in between the showers! But with the clocks going forward, one thing’s for sure: our days are longer and brighter, and that means tweaking our beauty bags to match. When it comes to seasonal trends, skin is always in for spring; the best new season looks revolve around a healthy, radiant glow. Regular exfoliation is the key to clear and healthy skin. Nimue’s Exfoliating Enzyme is ideal – part of your March Chic Treat box, this lightweight gel €49.00 should be left on for two minutes then massaged with a little water before being rinsed off. The result? Dramatically clearer and more youthful looking skin. When using chemical exfoliants, a good sunscreen is a must. P20, from €19.99, is a great pick for all skin types as it’s not greasy or oily and is also fragrance free. Apply it as the last step in your morning routine, right before your base. As featured in the Febuary Chic Treat Club!

And speaking of which, around about now is when I switch from a heavier foundation to a more lightweight BB or CC cream. Their lightweight formulas, all-day hydration and anti-aging benefits make them an easy, effortless option – as long as you find a good one! Bourjois, Rimmel and La Roche Posay offer great versions that are also pocket friendly. To really lift and lighten the complexion, invest in a brilliant highlighter. You don’t want anything too shimmery or obvious, just something to give you a pretty and luminous sheen. Buff Makeup Sheer Glo, €36 from The Make Up Suite at Hessions, is a lovely liquid option – blend over your base for a seamless, brightening glow. It comes in four pretty shades, including iridescent pink, peach and bronze. Prefer a powder? Look no further than the MegaGlo Illuminating Powder from Wet n Wild. This stuff is seriously good; soft, creamy and with a mix of four co-ordinating shades and textures. There are four shades on offer for just €4.49, so you can afford to try a few! Finish off with a bright lip, fluttery lashes and a dab of cream blush (I’m in love with the new Pop & Glow blush sticks from Boots No7) and you’re done! Now just sit back and wait for those compliments…

SHHHHH Secrets Revealed…. We asked model Roz Purcell about spring cleaning her makeup bag and changing up her skincare regime and here’s what she had to say! I actually just did a spring clean of my make-up bag, for fear anyone might see the state it’s fallen into!! I carry my make-up bag everywhere with me so it gets a lot of tough love and of course with all the going palettes often break and I’ve had a few glitter pot explosions! I try to clean my brushes often so an overhaul tends to happen at the same time! I don’t change my make-up products or colours I use really; I just adopt a lighter application approach for summer! I do take care of my skin aside from taking off my make up every night before I go to bed, I’m fond of microdermabrasion I get it done in renew every 6-8 weeks. During winter I wouldn’t use my salicylic wash as much during winter as my skin is a bit dryer but I lash my face and lips with 8 hour buame! I don’t wear as much make up during summer time but with all the sunscreen and heat/sweat I wash my face more and use weekly exfoliating masks like glam glow. I use IMAGE sunscreen; I don’t get spots from it even when I’m exercising out in the sun! And doesn’t melt off in white lines!

Actress Aoibhin Garrihy Usually I go a slight shade darker with my foundation (Lancôme teint miracle) coming into the summer. I also love introducing new lip shades from MAC like tangerine or candy pink at five moment. My skin is usually better in the summer so I don’t use as much concealer and for those days at the beach, water-proof mascara is always a good option!

Nail Love with Pamela Laird This month as we teamed up with fashion stopping range CND Vinylux for our April box we decided to meet the best of the best when it comes to nails in Ireland, Pamela Laird! This is one seriously hand-y lady, who has a multitude of talents under her belt. Her work is regularly featured in some of Ireland’s top magazines, including IMAGE, U and Irish Tatler, Pamela is a nail expert like no other, in fact Pamela was recently awarded nail technician of the year at the IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards, so we reckoned this was the woman in the know to share her knowledge on all things nails for the months ahead …. Congrats on winning your IMAGE award Pamela. What do you feel makes you different to other nail technicians? Ah, thank you so much! I am still on cloud nine after the awards; I really didn’t expect to win so it feels extra special! I’m not sure how different I am, but I suppose I grew up with nails and beauty which maybe not a lot of other nail tech’s can say. Mum has owned the salon since I was 3 so it was so natural for me. I did my first nail course when I was 15 (so nearly 10 years ago), and I pretty much strive to be the best I can be. Being the first in Ireland to do nails on editorial shoots is also an achievement that I am so proud of. As we come into summer, what nail trends can we expect to see a lot of? Summer is my favourite season and this summer’s trends won’t disappoint! White is going to be big in 2014, and I think it’s such an easy colour to wear especially on toes. Chanel are launching a white in June called Eastern Light, I’ve had a sneak peak and it’s gorgeous!Right now, CND Vinylux has a fab snow white called Cream Puff, and it lasts for up to 10 days. For me the sun is an excuse to wear all the bright shades and my goto bright is another CND Vinylux colour in Tropix. What I love about Vinylux is it dries so fast and doesn’t chip which is perfect for me! What previous nail trends are you glad to see the back off? I think embellishment looks great, but it’s not practical and for me sometimes can be a bit tacky. I am more into classy nail art that enhances the nails; studs and stones can make the nail look wider and less elegant.

A lot of people complain about their nails not growing, what advice can you give our readers to help the process? This is a question I get asked a lot, so first you need to figure out what nail type you have. There is a myth that nails need to breathe, but really they are just dead layers of skin and need protection, so always keep a coat on your nails to protect them. If you have a strong nail and your nails are snapping or peeling, this is a brittle nail so avoid nail “hardeners” as such, and go for a protective base coat rather than a strengthener, try Essie ‘Nourish Me’, this will protect nails from drying out when washing hands etc., but won’t make them overly-strong. Strengtheners and nail hardeners are for our weak, paper-thin nails that need rebuilding. In this case a nail strengthener is perfect.

What colours are you using a lot of right now? In the salon, I am getting asked for a lot of nudes, peach based, pink based and Beige nudes. I think this is a big trend for the everyday nail lover; it goes with everything and is so sophisticated! These colours are also great to team with an accent ring finger. When I am on shoots, I have to work a season or a few months ahead, so I get to use shades before they launch which is fun, right now it’s white and soft pink, so all very neutral! You work on an array of press shoots; do you have ‘go to’ brands that you serve different purposes e.g. great for colour, great for strength great for staying power? Absolutely! My kit is a mix of everything, my go-to nail shades are Chanel, and they go on as they look in the bottle which is so important for me. I have two different top coats’ I use, one is a professional topcoat that dries under UV light, the other is Sally Hansen Insta Dry topcoat, and it dries in seconds! For metallic or glitter shades, Essie is my favourite. They have a new Luxe range which is loaded with glitters and shimmer. For staying power it’s got to be Vinylux, it’s great to have confidence in your polish and know it’s going to be chip-free for a week!

What advice would you give to all those nail biters out there? I was told a great tip which has worked for a few people, and that’s putting red nail polish on. It sends a subliminal message to the brain, which when you see the red, is to stop biting. Otherwise starting to get CND shellac can work wonders. Most people find that if they don’t feel the jagged edge on the nail they won’t bite! How important is cuticle oil and which one should we be using? So important! The nail is formed just behind the cuticle in the Matrix, and the cuticle provides a water tight seal to prevent Bacteria from entering. If your cuticle is dry and cracked you’re not going to get a neat line with your paint, and never cut the cuticles is my number one rule! It stimulates the cuticle growth and causes them to grow back twice as fast and can be painful havingthem cut, so it’s a big no no for me! Best oil for me is Essie Apricot Oil. What three must haves are in your beauty bag? A nail file. I always wear acrylics so I need to have one just in case! Chanel lipstick in colour 89 the perfect nude and of course my Chanel Chance purse spray.

The Juice

with Elaine Diffley from Juice Delivery

This month, we sat down with the woman behind Juice Delivery, Elaine Diffley to find out more about her Juice Detox system, which will detox your body using 100% Pure and Natural Fresh vegetable and fruit juices! This detox system is loved by people and celebrities alike, she told us more about how she came up with this hugely successful concept, what she does to stay fit and how she manages to find time to balance work and family life. Elaine says the idea for Juice Delivery came to her one day after an ‘explosion’ of sorts: “One night, while on a 7 day detox, I was making my juices for the next morning, and the juicer exploded. Beetroot, all over the kitchen, I could have cried, and thought, there HAS to be an easier way!” So, with beetroot everywhere and a desire get back into a more healthy routine after taking a career break from marketing to start a family, she began to research the concept of Juice Cleansing. “I love motherhood, but the downside was that I found myself with no free time for getting to the gym and really just eating on the run,” she explained. “I have quite a healthy lifestyle anyway in terms of food, so after researching, I began juicing to really try and boost my system and cleanse all the toxins. Within just a few days I saw a massive improvement in my health; I was sleeping better, I had more energy, my skin and even the whites of my eyes looked brighter. And as a bonus I had also lost some weight. Friends and family noticed a difference immediately and asked if they could have a go.” She says that she needed a quicker method to make the juicing work on a larger scale, because of the fact that it’s time consuming, and so began the researching to see how she could bring this to people herself. And some time later, Juice Delivery, as we know it now was born but where does Elaine source these healthy ingredients? She says that they source the freshest product available, and always strives to promote local business. “We juice to order to ensure we are using the freshest produce available, and buy all of our fresh vegetables and fruit locally from the Smithfield fruit markets keeping as much business local as we can.” Which brings us to the next topic – doing the detox itself. It’s fairly safe to say that a lot of people might find the idea of just staying on juices for 3 days a bit daunting, so we asked Elaine for advice on this aspect of it: “Planning ahead and being prepared make a juice fast so much easier,”

she continued. “I would always advise people to arrange their schedule to allow for their detox, don’t try and do it when you have a hectic social schedule and do it at a time when you can get lots of rest as this really helps.” The concept of dieting in itself is a complex one; the notion of wanting to lose that bit of extra weight and cleanse the body in a healthy way is something that many women on diets seek to achieve, so we had to ask, is juicing a more realistic form of dieting? Elaine says it’s a lifestyle choice, not a form of dieting: “I don’t class Juicing as a form of ‘dieting’, it is a lifestyle,” she says. “While juicing is one of the best ways to lose weight as you are providing your body with ‘essential’ nutrients and not food that will make you gain weight, there are no easy fixes, and Juicing can give you a great kick start, but like anything worth doing, you really have to work hard at maintaining the results. People that take juicing seriously and juice daily, replacing some meals with quality juices will see their body change to their optimum weight. Juicing gives your body the chance to absorb some of nature’s finest nutrients and will help speed up weight loss, but again you have to work to maintain this.” Elaine is a woman who is definitely always on the go with 2 small babies so we were dying to know, how does she fit it all in? “It’s so hard to completely switch from one role to another,” she says. “When I am working I am always thinking about the babies and when I am with the babies I have to really try and not always have the laptop at hand, as family time is really precious to me.We always have a family meal out once a week to just be the four of us.” There’s no doubt about it, busy parents trying to adapt to healthier lifestyles can be a very big challenge, and Elaine says in her opinion the biggest challenge of them all is very simply: time. “Eating healthily and giving your family healthy meals when you have no time is a huge challenge, it’s so hard to ‘grab’ something healthy, as there are very little healthy offerings out there.” Her advice to combat this… Prep your snacks the night before and eat smaller portions. And finally, on a slightly different topic, we were dying to know what Elaine’s beauty must-haves were: “Always a bottle of Evian Water, a nice Lip-gloss, (at the moment it’s MAC Underage), and a good concealer.” You can find out more about Juice Delivery by visiting their website: www.juicedelivery.ie or on Twitter: @juicedeldub or Facebook: www.facebook.com/juicedelivery.dublin
