Crossroads, a recently thriving cultural hot spot located south of downtown Kansas City, has a lot to offer including: rooftop lofts, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, etc. One amenity missing is a facility to exercise the body and mind. The Crossroads Wholebody Center is designed to serve the community and follow the existing red and yellow brick archetypes of the neighborhood, but introduce new materiality. The idea of ‘slippage’ in terms of a building’s spatial flow between mass and void fits perfectly within the function of exercise. As one may perform up to several activities during a visit, this facility’s spaces become very important to distinguish. Introducing a slipping effect from one space to the other allows the user ease in circulating yet helps define hierarchical and spatial complexities. Rock climbing, swimming, studios, and machine exercising are the four primary functions of the Wholebody Center. Defining these spaces through slippage becomes possible by separating rock climbing and swimming completely then connecting them visually while shifting and sliding the studio spaces in between. These shifts occur above the lobby to clearly show the user upon arrival what each space is doing and how they should interact with the building as a whole.

2 RESOLVED RESPONSE

The Bowman Forum is a 3rd year scholarship competition sponsored by Bowman Bowman Novick Inc. The purpose of this scholarship is to showcase the best work of a select few students, which in their 3rd year have begun to develop what it means to be an architect. The KSU Women’s Rowing facility was the building chosen to test the design skills of 3rd year students. This design was driven by a rigorous process to integrate a cohesive building design that would allow climate conditions, form, space, structure and enclosure to exist as one vernacular archetype. This archetype was taken from the surrounding reservoir water control towers. These tall, monumental structures seem to pierce the water with tremendous force yet simultaneously float weightlessly atop the water’s crest.

Three vertical circulation cores anchor the scheme to prevent the weightlessness of the facades to float away. Circulation through servant and served spaces is resolved with a celebratory stair, which mimics the building’s notion of filigree upon plynth.

Entry view looking northwest Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) act as a secondary structural system by taking shear forces caused by the primary mortice and tenon structural system.

The openness of the building’s scheme along with the atrium allows for good cross and stack ventilation.

A southern facing shading device was developed to block summer solar gain as well as create an aesthetic to allow the filigree construct to appear weightless upon the earth-integrated plynth.

The concrete plynth serves as a structural foundation for the filigree structure to prop itself upon. These two systems co-exist through spatial implications.

3 TENSEGRAL TECTONICS

Timber in the City: Urban Habitats Competition challenged the design of a midrise, mixed-use complex with affordable housing units, a job training/educational facility, a center for innovative manufacturing of wood technology, and a distribution center. The project site is in Red Hook, Brooklyn; a neighborhood in some flux, cut off from much of Brooklyn geographically, yet increasingly vibrant since its earlier years as a stockyard and center of sea trade. The competition challenged designers to interpret, invent, and deploy numerous methods of building systems, with a focus on innovations in wood design and technologies on a real site. For thousands of years, solid wood has been used as a building material from Japan all the way to Scandinavia. Timber is an ideal green building material: it is well suited for a broad range of structural and aesthetic applications, it offers high performance characteristics; and wood is an economic driver to maintain forests and protect jobs in our communities.

TENSEGRITY; meaning the property of skeleton structures that employ continuous tension members and discontinuous compression members in such a way that each member operates with the maximim efficiency and economy. ‘Tensional integrity’ works a lot like the muscles and bones of the body. The intent of innovating wood to accomodate an urban environment seemed appropriate for such an idea as tensegrity; it’s a RADICAL IDEA which has been played out in much success and detail for the Red Hook neighborhood’s new residential tower. The Artist Colony was a group project meant to give each student collaborative experience similar to what is common practice in the profession. Located in the woods of New Boston, NY this retreat campus for artists included a public exhibition space, black box theater, residence cabins, art studios, communal dining center and research library. I was design lead on the research library. The conceptual importance of the library is to provide a ‘beacon of light’ on the campus. In the woods it can become very dark at night so the library’s significance was not only symbolically redeeming itself as the center of knowledge, but as a lantern to enlighten inspiration within the creative minds it serves.

The center piece or ‘beacon of light’ acts as a nucleus for light and activity within the library; a lantern for reading. Two solid concrete slabs sandwich the central light source in order to protect rare books from direct artificial light. Vertical wood slats splay out from the concrete to diffuse the lantern light softly into the surrounding interior volume; a pleasant environment for reading.

Light is controlled very carefully in order to protect the books from direct daylighting. These solid facade panels, which sandwich every corner of the library’s stacks, only allow light in through slits placed between each corner stack to ensure complete protection from direct daylight.

The mostly skeletal structure suggests spatial clarity within the stacks. Space within the columns is designated for openness yet allows spontaneous moments to read. Space outside the columns is completely cantilevered to give the reader a sense of adventure similar to climbing a tree for a special reading spot.

The aTa (Area Transportation Agency) bus stop was a theoretical project for the benefit of the city of Manhattan, KS. At the time this public transportation service was exploding yet lacking proper bus shelters throughout the city. This design incorporates tectonics as an outgrowth of its formal, spatial and aesthetic implications into one whollistic piece. Using a simple and prefabricated kit of parts this bus shelter could easily be propped up in a matter of hours. PV panels are installed onto the structure to provide shelter and enough energy to keep the electronic bus schedule running. Seating is designated to each ‘pod’ within the shelter to allow for a sense of security or privacy.
