Placing the dwellings in old factories, fear becomes a common theme. With these compact units, two separate spaces are created, one dark, and one light – showing the struggle to get in and out.

DETROIT CLASSICAL M USIC P LA Z A Winter 2010

- DCMP

Working with Vivaldi Four Seasons, seasons are selected and become inspiration for a conceptual design of a building.

Tasked with the design of the restaurant, it becomes a representation of Autumn as it’s the changing of the seasons.

1.2

When arriving at the space one is struck by the boldness of the structure. With sloped and outreaching walls that symbolizes peacefulness and change of autumn. This change showing that Autumn is only there to take you from the harshness of summer into the harshness of winter. With an inviting interior, classical music is playing allowing you to escape from the troubles of the world, as you enjoy yourself in a modern but yet traditional and seemingly slow moving interior. By creating this unique dining venue a bold new building will be formed that allows you to experience classical music as well as the rich heritage of music that is still alive in Detroit.

By analyzing John Hejduk’s Wall House #2 a distinct connection between public and private exists.

A series of sketch models are created to find a similar representation of public vs private.

2

Hejduk designs for a house that place living in the context of time by means of a Wall. The Wall symbolizes the physical transition from past to future through the present, a transition between back and front, closed and open.

wall House: chipboard model bird House: resin + concrete

Applying these findings to a birdhouse for the underground nesting Kingfisher, a similar separation and connection can be formed.

Using three living pods in the rear are offset from the long entrance, creating a balanced but asymmetric structure, similar to the Wall House.

Urban Cemetery WINTER 2011

A burned out Baptist church 3 miles south of downtown Chicago becomes the home of an urban cemetery.

In this context a crematorium is designed, the design features monolithic and smooth surfaces to create an emotionally neutral space to an otherwise emotional time.

Located on Main Street and Third, The Square is an entire block remodel. Focusing on the hotel, it is designed to maximize movement by creating an offset dual loading system. Leaving the walk ways open, and with minimal windows, guests and encouraged to leave the room and utilize the courtyard and Royal Oak.

Strong gestures accent the blending of spaces by expressing space without walls. Wood paneling draws individuals in along an angled wall, which carries through into the bar and further into a partition between the spaces, effortlessly connecting them while managing to maintain their unique individuality.

The cafĂŠ functions as a support facility to the hotel and the professional space. Broken up into two zones, one intimate section in the rear and a transition open space in the front. With a sloped ceiling and with interlocking floor materials, the space blends into the passageway and extends to the outside.

Praga Language is an enrichment school focusing on language. By utilizing experiential learning techniques, a new way to learn can be discovered. Learning zones are established based on Concrete, Reflective, Abstract and Active learning.

The bridge element represents the active space. It allows for a blending action to take place between all of the learning levels. Large groups of different ages can form, to showcase what they have learned. The active space continues into the courtyard to maximize the blending effect.

Reflection pods allow for people to practice speaking in the comfort of privacy. These pods are able to record, and play back voice to check pronunciation.

Above the lobby there are three learning levels based on age – pre-teen, teen, post-teen. Each level has its own core of concrete learning classrooms and reflective space consisting individual and small group space, as well as reflection pods. The “LAB” exists in the rear of the site. This is where abstract learning takes place. The Lab contains different technologies and learning methods as well an auditorium and sound rooms for native Praga folk music to be learned and preformed.

The points crossing the site, are translated into the terrain and ground planes, intersecting and creating an environment based on a terrain.

Using a section of Venice, buildings are re-arranged to fit the terrain that was created.

The natural layout of the buildings have the potential to define a program that works with the site and is determined by the user to adapt their program to fit the volume of the space.

The shapes that are created with the viewports are applied to the floors of the museum center. Combined they create multiple volume spaces and abstract lines. Maintaining the idea of how, through optics a sequence of spaces can be developed. All floors maintain the idea of how viewports were used in the terrain and are transferred and scaled to fit the used floor plans.

By creating the floors in this manner, the sections are able to follow a similar principle.

Each facade is different, therefore each location provides a different image, and a different way to see the site and building.

The Garden of Vanquished Ambition

A light milky feeling, creating a atmosphere of self reflection (physically and mentally), with out a clear image presented back. A dramatic space that is worthy of its name.

By searching for a vanishing point, the point its self becomes reversed and transformed into a viewport. Viewports are utilized as a locater for the optical center of the site. Determining where overlying and concentrated areas would exist. Translating these viewports and overlaid space into the terrain, plan, section and faรงade, a visual regime is created. These patterns are constantly reoccurring producing an area that utilizes both light and lite elements.

The Architectural Museum, through strong gestures becomes a prominent location on campus, and can provide increased interest in not only campus, but also important artifacts from previous architectural periods. To re-energize the fountain plaza, an architectural museum and architectural library were created. In addition to these new structures the fountain plaza was re-designed to allow for a multi-functional space. The more flexible plaza gives freedom for people to create their own spaces whether for large groups or individual contemplation: it also serves as additional break-out space for the Fountain Lounge. It creates more direct paths across the plaza for ease of movement while still maintaining separate zones.

Maximizing the use of a lower level a 300 person ADA accessible lecture hall was designed to meet acoustic equipments consisting of a 0.86 second reverberation time and a total volume per audience seat of 146sqft per person. This is done through sound reflecting panels on both the walls and ceiling. Integrated lighting is introduced to provide a uniform light distribution for the occupants.

With multiple galleries, multiple gallery styles are needed. The north gallery utilizes alternating recessed lights with recessed linear air diffusers. Movable spot lights tracks are positioned between the rows of fixed lights to expand versatility.

ARCHI TECTUR A L MUSEUM The galleries utilize a blend of diffused natural light, whether it is through north facing light monitors, semi-opaque glass, or reflected light; the galleries also employ artificial light in the form of hanging light tubes or recessed diffused light. With a multi-use space and open architectural gallery, the design will bring life back to a once interrupted space.

A forced air system was utilized to provide consistent air flow and temperature control. Use of recessed diffusers become added elements to the architectural design and are used to provide minimal interruptions of gallery exhibits. With a mostly concealed structure the main gallery uses expressed rigid frame construction to provided added interest. The rigid frame employs three closely connected rigid frame profiles to provide an architectural element within itself.
