Gears
Aviation Technology Courtyard
These gears are the leading inspiration behind my design. Every movement in a gear will cause all others to move. This is an analogy of how a change on a college campus can effect every other aspect of the college community. Lastly, gears are a necessary part of many different mechanical systems.
Visual Calendar The plants within this planting area are chosen to grow in a specific order. When spring begins the flowers bloom from cool to warm colors and when summer recedes the colors recede in the reverse order. This is a visual reminder of the current month.

Overpowered Labyrinth The quickest path between two points is a straight line. This labyrinth is a subtle reminder that people will overpower any obstacle in order to save commute time.
Five Senses The plants chosen for this courtyard were done so, in order to appeal to all five senses. This is in reference to the need to consider all five senses when creating and designing technology.
Purpose - Shows ability to work with plants to enhance a design. - Linework and shadows completed in AutoCAD and Photoshop.

Newton Reservoir Grading Master Plan Naturally Cleaning Runoff Because of the location on a mountainside the control of water is most important in this design. The water travels from the northern most pool down to the bottom right through an underground pipe into a succession of pools to the left-most retention pond. This allows time for all of the pollutants to settle out of the water and cleaning it as well as retaining it. The retaining ponds will have an added benefit of being aesthetically pleasing to the visitors of the site because of the curvilinear and natural form of the ponds.

Purpose - Shows ability to work with the existing landform and my ability to control the flow of water.
Design All of the contour lines on this actual site were drawn and calculated for their slope values and redesigned by myself. Picnic areas trees and roads were also placed and designed by myself.

Speth Residence Gathering Area The mature existing trees allowed for a unique opportunity to utilize the center open area as outdoor seating around a fire ring. The surrounding vegetation allows for the residents to see out and maintain an intimate setting.
Conserving Water The existence of grass has be minimized in order to reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation. Plants were also chosen that were native to the area and therefore will not require irrigation unless there is an abnormally long drought period. This was important because Utah’s water is a precious resource that needs to be conserved and used as little as possible.

Purpose - Shows how I can design at a small scale. - Shows sustainable design techniques.
Dual Purpose The back yard shows how I am able to plan for multi-uses in a single area. There are specimen trees and focal points in view from inside and outside of the house. Three small intimate areas are formed in this yard. Lastly, play areas are designed for the Speth children to play while being in view.

Canyon Gates Park Purpose - All linework completed in AutoCAD. - Shows ability to work at a large scale. - Use of sustainable techniques with native plant materials.
Five-Hundred Year Storm The grey lines on this plan are the ten foot grading lines. This diagram gives a feel for how this design will look, function, and feel when a storm event fills it to capacity. A unique design element is the emergence of “islands that will form as the water rises.

Retention Basin Design Explanation At the mouth of North Logan Canyon exists a retention basin designed for a five-hundred year storm event. My goal was to design a park that fulfilled the need to retain that water and at the same time provide for the recreational needs of the residents. This design exceeds those desires with a range of activities from soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, to unstructured activities like open fields, equestrian and pedestrian trails, and even hills designed for winter sports like sledding, skiing, and snowboarding.
