Naturally, we have projects in our homeland: the events of the anniversary campaign Republic of Estonia 100, the light solutions in Eesti Rahva Muuseum, projects connected with the presidency of the European Union, Hilton Tallinn Park hotel, etc. To manage all this, we have thoroughly renewed our production facilities. We have our production division in Estonia comprising of 4000 m2 of production and storage area, all employees are specialists in their field. In the autumn of 2017 the production division moved into new modern premises, in coming years the logistics and storage will be renewed. The most important keyword for us is – quality. All materials and components are chosen from best manufacturers all over the world, we test the materials in different weather conditions all year round and only then when we are convinced in their operational ability, we offer them to our clients. Since the beginning of our activity we have emphasised the importance of the product design and that has become one of our advantages. The winning of the design contest of decoration the main Christmas tree in St. Petersburg in 2013 was a clear sign that we are moving in the right direction. The main direction indicator for us is the exhibition of Christmas lights in Frankfurt – Christmasworld. We equalled world leaders already in the second year and the response of clients from all over the world in 2017 was extremely positive. INSPIRED BY NATURE The goal of every entrepreneur is to understand clients’ expectations and know how to achieve them. In recent years ADAM Decolight has extended its geographical range in many very different cultural spaces. We have managed to create and design light solutions appreciated by people in Europe, Asia and as far as New Zealand. We have been often asked: how have you managed to achieve that? It is difficult to give one certain answer because reaching the best result is a time-consuming complex process, which depends on a thousand different details. One distinct feature that inspires our designers and product developers, though – it is nature! Many architects, interior designers and designers have been inspired by nature. This is due to the fact that people all around the world want to be surrounded by nature. This is something that matters to all of us irrespective of nationality or cultural background. The light tree Sasha exhibited at Christmas exhibition in Frankfurt received its final form from nature – a spruce tree growing in the green zone near our production division. The form of the tree and the shape of its branches helped us to reach the solution that fascinated visitors and made them stop at our exhibition stand in Christmasworld. We wish that our products inspired by genuine nature help to create Christmas feelings in people’s souls all over the world!

THE YOUNG AND TALENTED ESTONIAN DESIGNER KRISTIINA KARJUS LIT UP THE FRANKFURT CHRISTMAS FAIR At the Christmasworld 2017 trade fair held in Frankfurt, Germany, the AS Adam BD stand in Pavilion 11 became an attraction all on its own thanks to its huge LED trees. Very few know that the young designer behind them is Estonia’s Kristiina Karjus (29), who was also responsible for designing this catalogue and almost half the products featured in it. Kristiina found herself attracted to the world of lights just seven years ago when AS Adam BD got the right to develop a street lighting solution for the Russian city of St. Petersburg. She had been friends with project manager Martin Makarevitš for many years, which is why he asked for her help on the St. Petersburg project. A few years later she also got the chance to design the Christmas tree for the square in front of the Winter Palace– and the tree, with only a few tweaks, has been put into service every year ever since. “It was a huge challenge,” the naturally modest Kristiina says. “Before that I’d mostly been designing packaging, so the world of lights and lighting was a big unknown. Looking back on it now I guess I acquitted myself well enough, since quite a few of the solutions I came up with for the St. Petersburg tree have started popping up elsewhere in the world as products in their own right.” Today, not surprisingly, Kristiina feels very much at home realising new lighting ideas.

A GIRL WHO LEARNT TO DRAW BEFORE SHE COULD TALK Product design is not something to which Kristiina has ever taken an academic approach. She did consider studying architecture at university, but her plans changed and in 2012 she graduated instead with a degree in enterprise and business management from the Estonian Business School. For as long as she can remember, however, she has been fascinated by and read up on art, psychology, neuroscience (about which she even wrote her graduation thesis) and geometry – all crucial areas when it comes to design. Meanwhile, Kristiina’s business-based education has been of enormous help in promoting her personal design studio, OÜ Media Element. “I didn’t really believe at ﬁrst that I’d make any money from design with my own company,” she admits, “but if you’re doing what you love, I guess nothing’s impossible.” Especially when a talent for design is something you are born with: Kristiina started drawing well before she uttered her ﬁrst word. “As far back as I

can recall, I always had a pencil in my hand, scribbling away on a piece of paper,” she says. “Even now I still draw my initial ideas on paper. Only after that do I start working on them graphically on the computer.”

Kristiina produced her ﬁrst ‘designer piece’ in kindergarten at the tender age of six. “I designed and drew these decorations for the party room at the kindergarten that were bigger than I was!” she explains. “Then when I started school I took to making posters for whatever events were being put on.” Today, while designing lights for Adam, she sometimes feels that she should have paid more attention in physics lessons. “I drew my way through all those classes as well, which is why these days I tend to ﬁnd myself forgetting how gravity works and the nuances that come with that! It’s Martin

who has to remind me of that every now and again.” With her own work Kristiina likes to put herself in the environment for which she is designing the products. For example, one commission with Adam was for Turkmenistan – a complete question mark of a country to the ordinary Estonian where it is very diﬃcult to tune yourself in to the same wavelength as the population. The solution was Turkmen music, which Kristiina started listening to for inspiration. It worked. “What I try to achieve with my work above and beyond anything else is for it to make people feel something,” she says. “I guess that’s one of the main reasons I work so well with Adam Decolight. Its slogan is ‘Creating light emotions’after all!”

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE Kristiina commends the Adam team fornever saying no to even her most outrageous ideas. “It’s normally the other way round!” she reveals. “Sometimes I assume it’ll be technically impossible to make an idea work, but they spur me on and always ﬁnd a way to pull it oﬀ. That’s what I like about working with them – they’re not afraid to take risks, to try new things. Thanks to that, nothing’s impossible.” >>

As someone who studied business, Kristiina clearly recognises the difference between products that are ‘real’ and those that are not. “Everything has its price,” she shrugs. “Life’s shown that the products that are the most well-received are those that look good but aren’t very technically complex or expensive. You’ve got to recognise where that line is and take it into account when you’re designing something.” Over time Kristiina says she has started to accept the fact that the finished product will inevitably diverge to some extent from the original design. “These days I’m able to factor that in from the start when I’m planning products and can see in my mind’s eye what they’ll turn out like in real life,” she explains. One of Kristiina’s biggest success stories in recent times was a set of light trees made from 2D aluminium frames which she initially developed to decorate the posts of Pirita Bridge in Tallinn before lighting up the Frankfurt fair with them this year. “In the dark they really do look like 3D trees, but in fact they’re made up of a series of 2D modules that are easy to put together and replace, thanks to which they’re also reasonably priced,” she explains. Kristiina concedes that although the decorations are very attractive at night, during the day they can barely be seen. “Products that look just as nice day and night are my biggest challenge,” she says. “That’s the same for designers the world over. The decorations on the Christmas tree in St Petersburg look good whatever time of day it is, and they’ve now taken off all over the globe.” Where do Kristiina’s ideas come from? She answers with refreshing frankness that she

has no idea. “They just come to me,” she says. “Or they don’t. I’ve thought about it myself, but then it’s the same story with other creative people: none of us really know where we get our ideas from. They can hit you in a moment, completely randomly. The idea for the live tree range struck me one day when I was looking at the plants on my balcony.”

CREATIVE FREEDOM IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE This leads Kristiina to admit that the most successful commissions are those where the client simply says: “Do something awesome!” In her view, creative freedom is much more likely to produce something truly ‘awesome’. “If the client already has a very clear idea of what they want, that sends your creativity into lockdown,” she explains. “You feel like you’re being forced into a very ﬁxed framework, and it’s really hard to think outside of it.” In cooperation with Adam, Kristiina is currently working on her biggest-ever project: providing part of the street lighting design for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. “It’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on, and obviously, the greatest responsibility as well,” she says. “On the one hand the volume of it is way larger than anything I’ve done before, but on the other hand it’s... well, it’s something that will be representing our country’s anniversary, us ourselves, for quite a few years, so I really want what I come up with to be totally awesome, for it to spark oﬀ feelings in people and to celebrate the occasion in appropriate style.

KRISTIINA GRASPS THE VERY NATURE OF BEAUTY MARTIN MAKAREVITŠ R&D Manager, Adam BD AS I’ve known Kristiina for almost 15 years. I came across what she was working on at the time: the design and layout for a fashion magazine and producing content for it. Around the same time, we were looking for a new designer. She agreed to join and hit the ground running. The results were amazing. Every now and again Kristiina still surprises me by outdoing herself. It really does seem as though her creativity knows no bounds. She certainly gets results. If you compare our catalogues to those of bigger global producers, the developments we’ve made are every bit comparable to theirs. We’re winning design tenders on markets where older companies should have an advantage over us, some of whom have as many as 40 designers on their payroll. She understands what’s beautiful and what isn’t. She just can’t stand anything ugly. But that beauty isn’t always uniform or cute – depending on the context, it can be angled or minimalistic, or something altogether diﬀerent, marked by curved lines or even pomposity. If Kristiina starts working on a new market and her ideas really start to ﬂy, she blossoms, in the most direct sense of the word. And so do the clients. The feedback they give us is always warm and glowing.

YEARS OF ELECTRIC CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Electric Christmas tree lights were first switched on in the home of one Edward Hibberd Johnson, a good friend of Thomas Alva Edison, 135 years ago in the USA.

Since then, the world of Christmas lights has evolved into a fantasy with limitless possibilities, but ‘Edison bulbs’ have once again earned a respected place among designers’ creations. Lights in one form or another have been adorning Christmas trees since the 18th century. At first, wax candles were tied to the branches with thread, although these tended to fall off and cause fires. They came up with a number of solutions, including candle-holders with special clamps that would keep them more steadily affixed to the branches, but fires raged on.

THE VERY FIRST ELECTRIC CHRISTMAS TREE A breakthrough only came in the late 19th century. The inventor of the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison, came up with the idea of hanging a daisy chain of lights around his New Jersey laboratory and factory. His aim in doing so was to demonstrate his abilities in the ﬁeld of electriﬁcation and thus win a contract for the development of electric lighting in Manhattan. This inspired Edison’s friend Edward Johnson, who was also the vice-president of Edison’s electricity company, to take an electrical cable home with him to his Fifth Avenue residence and decorate the Christmas tree in his parlour with 80 specially made bulbs in red, white and blue. The year was 1882. Johnson invited every member of the local press to come and admire this wonder of the modern world. Sadly, his invitation was all but ignored, with most journalists assuming it was just another Edison & co. PR stunt. The event was only covered by the Detroit Post and Tribune. This was all Johnson needed: he went down in history as the ‘father of the electric Christmas tree lights’.

THE TEENAGER WHO CHANGED THE WORLD

Years went by and still people failed to embrace Johnson’s invention. This was perfectly understandable, however, since electricity remained something of a novel concept at the time. If you wanted electric lights on your Christmas tree, this normally meant hiring a generator for the festive season – not to mention someone to deliver it, put it all together and keep a constant eye on it. The ﬁrst person who could aﬀord such luxury after the manufacturer himself was then president Grover Cleveland, who had the White House Christmas tree decorated with 100 coloured lights at his daughters’ request 13 years after Johnson. Thereafter they became something of a status symbol among the wealthy, although ordinary folk had to wait another decade or two for the electricity network to expand into their homes.

After a string of ﬁres in New York in 1917, one Albert Sadacca, the 15-year-old son of the owner of a small electrical supplies store, set about cobbling together a string of coloured bulbs powered with one plug. As he did so, he had no idea that his handiwork would make him a millionaire. Sadacca’s father started making them to sell to the public. At ﬁrst sales were sluggish, since the handmade strings of lights were still rather expensive. Soon, however, Albert and his two brothers established an association with other similar small-scale producers. This led, in 1925, to the foundation of the Noma Electric Company, whose high production capacity and lower prices saw it become the biggest manufacturer of Christmas lights in the world. It was Albert Sadacca and Noma that laid the foundations for the basic technology of Christmas lights as we know them today.

NEW PRODUCTS Adam has developed the selection of decorations in this catalogue diligently, yet at a fast pace. The two main areas we concentrate on are: design and new technologies. In this article, we wish to lift the cover on some of our newest technological advancements, which have made it possible to achieve the fascinating new designs you can ﬁnd throughout this product catalogue.

A FASCINATING SYSTEM

3D DECORATIONS CREATED FROM 2D ELEMENTS

Sasha, a product group found on pages 16-17, has a design derived straight from the nature. The model for this product is an actual ﬁr tree growing in front of the oﬃce of our manufacturing facility. Whilst this kind of inspiration is always a big leap from an idea to a real product, you still need a technology to build the design on. In this case we adapted the concept used on an earlier product Eden (page 19). To install a big (for example 5-meter) 3D tree, you usually need: A. a very big truck or B. a lot of small decorative details and a lot of installation time.

With our 2D-elements-to-3D-decorations system you have neither of those complicated solutions. All these products (Sasha, Baltic, Eden: pages 16-19) come neatly packed into flat boxes or pallets. One 5-meter tree consists of only 12 pieces. These are flat modules, which in combination give a wonderful 3D product. The cost of manufacturing such a product is much lower when compared to a full 3D item, which cannot be taken apart into flat modules. Also, the cost on warehouse, transportation and installation is much lower. You can install a big tree in a few hours, whereas a massive full 3D item would usually need a whole day or more to install.

30V LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEMS WITH ADDED SAFETY

Our standard solution for powering light sources is 230V. It means that our lights are so cleverly built, that they are plugged straight into the mains power (meaning your wall socket). Only the Starting Kit, which includes a small AC/DC converter to eliminate any ﬂickering from the LEDs, is an extra piece of equipment next to the lights – of course, since the starting kit is so small, it is never a problem. The Starting Kit also includes a meltable fuse, as an added safety feature, in case a cable is broken somewhere etc. There are some cases, where the lights are so close to touching distance in a public area, that there is an absolute need to eliminate ANY possibility of an electric shock, even if the product is fully broken by some accident (for example kids playing nearby etc). The solution is to use low voltage - so even if you deliberately break a product and touch the copper wires, you can't get an electric shock. We have developed a line of 30V (low voltage) products as an alternative to most of our standard products (LED Decolight, LED Curtainlight, LED Ropelight etc). In the past using Low Voltage has created two problems, which we have overcome: 1. Limited maximum length of a Decolight/Ropelight etc - The lower the voltage used inside the product, the bigger of a voltage drop you have at the end of your long extension cable, Decolight, Ropelight. Standrad Low Voltage products on the market are 24V. Instead, we are producing 30V power supplies and LED products. It gives the opportunity to connect longer lines of products without the risk of damaging anything and still keep exactly the same safety level as with 24V, 12V etc. 2. Size of the power supplies - while a Low Voltage power supply is still much bigger than a 230V Starting kit, we have managed to assemble a set of power supplies to be used together with our 30V items, which are aesthetical and minimum in size. The smallest 30V 30W power supply is so small that installed on an aluminum frame of a decoration, it is practically hidden from sight. See products on pages 146-147

NEW IP67 DECOLIGHT

THE INCREDIBLE WATERPROOFNESS The industry standard on LED light sources in winter lighting has been IP44 for a long time and it will remain so for some time. But the most demanding conditions in the market have taken us onto a new level. We have developed a product line, which is certified for IP67 protection rating. The biggest difference between new IP67 and traditional IP44 rated items are the connectors. To achieve an IP protection level of 67, all electrical connectors include 2 sets of waterproof seals. First seal is a traditional O-ring and the extra seal is a double-finned rubber ring. All the extra waterproofing needs special molds and technology, which adds to the cost a little - it means that this product group is developed for extreme conditions and for the most demanding customers.

Let's take a moment to describe, what do the IP rating numbers mean. FIRST DIGIT INDICATES INGRESS OF SOLID OBJECTS 4 - Protected against solid objects over 1.0 mm e.g. wires. Our standard IP44 product. 5 - Limited protection against dust ingress. 6 - Maximum: Totally protected against dust ingress. Our IP67 product. SECOND DIGIT INDICATES INGRESS OF LIQUIDS 4 - Protected against splash water from any direction. Our standard IP44 product. 5 - Protected against low pressure water jets from any direction. Limited ingress permitted. Best products on the winter lighting market until we introduced our IP67 line. 6 - Protected against high pressure water jets from any direction. WHAT MAKES A GOOD QUALITY LED PRODUCT? In LED lighting, there are a lot of terms, speciﬁcations and promises that describe the quality of the product using LEDs as a light source. For example, lifetime in hours. The reality is that quality, meaning longevity, fault free operation and very good working parameters, is determined by a lot of variables in combination.

1. RESISTANCE TO WEATHER Our products as a whole set include cables, quick connectors, lamps, sockets, junction boxes that withstand even the hardest weather conditions. Our standard IP44 rated products meet the demands of this ingress protection level easily and exceed many of them. This year we are introducing additionally the IP67 product line, which exceeds the needs of even the most demanding conditions.

Color temperature explained Color temperature is a speciﬁcation, which describes if light is yellowish, neutral or bluish. It is applicable only to white light. In our catalogue we mainly use two distinctions: Warm White and Cool White - these are both versions of white light, but they diﬀer from each other by color temperature. The color temperature unit is Kelvin [K]. For example: 3000K (three thousand degrees Kelvin). It is somewhat counterintuitive, but the bigger the number (higher temperature of the light) the colder the light is. 2. LIGHT CONSISTENCY A good LED product is manufactured using LEDs with proper speciﬁcations. By managing our supply of LED chips, we can achieve a lot: 1. We keep our colors the same throughout the years. It means our clients can add lights to an existing installation and the old ones look similar to the new ones. 2. The LEDs we use in our products are of good quality, hence they don’t have changes in their color temperature throughout their lifetime. 3. Good quality LEDs also mean that the brightness of our products is still very high even after many years of use. 4. We also take seriously the consistency of color temperature among each LED in a Decolight lightstring, ropelight etc. It means that if you look at the lights in a row, you see uniform color temperature throughout the whole product.

Sun is a big factor to consider in outdoor installations. It is not advisable to cut costs by using PVC cable instead of rubber cable. We use only high-quality rubber cables, which give our high-end LEDs an opportunity to perform for a long time. Electrical cables need protection from the UV-light that comes from the sun. If you add freezing temperatures to the equation, the question of rubber cables becomes even more important. It is extremely important to have a soft and bending cable in your product, even in freezing temperatures and we use only materials, that meet such demands.

In winter decorative lighting aluminum has become the standard material to use for frames. But not all manufacturers can take full advantage of this material. Aluminum frame quality is mostly related to two big areas of expertise: actual quality of bending and welding. During decades of working with aluminum, we have developed a manufacturing facility, which incorporates all the tools, benches, know-how and, of course, the best experienced team in the ﬁeld. Our frames are professionally made and stay aesthetically pleasant for years. But more than that, before anyone starts to cut, bend or weld a frame, there needs to be an idea. Our team of engineers and designers work out the best solutions for frames.

A chain is as strong as the weakest link. Connectors might seem insignificant at first glance, but they are as important in a chain as any other component in terms of product quality. Our installations are often outdoors and it is very important to keep water out from electrical connections. We have achieved it by development and testing of different materials and connectors.

Adam Decolightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product line has featured different ropelights for years. Now we are also offering possibilities to illuminate your indoor or outdoor project with LED Strips. LED Strip is basically ropelight with powerful SMD LEDs, which makes it similar to product like wallwashers (brightness wise). The models with high number of LEDs give enough light to illuminate a room or a facade. We can produce and install LED Strips with various colors light outputs and also voltages. 12V LED Strips have RGB versions with various ways of controlling the light-show. While 12V LED Strips are already known in the market, the 230V SMD LED Strip is relatively new. We have tested 230V products with good results. You can have a strip with a length of up to 50m, which is powered only from one starting cable.

LED Screens

LED SCREENS LED screens are becoming more and more popular all over the world. Since Adam Decolight knows it’s way around with LEDs and metal structures, we have made it our priority to get to know the LED screens well. We have set up outdoor screens as well as indoor screens. We have been part of designing and building metal constructions for the screens to be mounted on streets and also worked with architects to integrate the screens into a newly built houses. As always we will take the project as a whole: starting with the visualizations of the different sized screens on your location and finishing with the complete working system ready to fill the demands of the client. LED screens are sold as a complete project. So we encourage you to contact us with your request so we can find the right solution for your project. The LED modules shown in our catalogue use Epistar LEDs, Outdoor modules have an IP rating of 65 and perform well even in the worst weather conditions. But there are many variables when it comes to choosing an LED screen. Contact us and together we can find the right product for you.

LED WALLWASHERS Every building with an outstanding architecture should have a carefully planned light design to bring aesthetics into the long evenings of the city space. Many architects already plan the lighting from the start, but it is also possible to do it afterwards. We design and carry out the lighting plot for your house or garden so it would be a whole with the general architectural idea. A lighting equipment usually needs periodic maintenance because of blown light bulbs. We use Wallwashers which benefit substantially from the increased maintenance free time of LED technology. Also it is a well known fact that LED lighting is very energy efficient.

GOBO PROJECTORS

Adam Decolight’s Innovative Product Line features a technology originated from theatre lighting. Profile spotlights or in other words projectors, which are specially developed for outdoor use. The projectors can project any kind of visual still images onto different surfaces. Main article being Building Facade Light Design. Very high light output discharge lamps grant a crisp image, which will stand out in the cityspace as something interesting. The image is projected by focusing light through a glass, which has an image printed on it. This piece of glass is called a gobo. By replacing gobo effects, you can replace the whole light design. Designing and producing new gobo effects is very economical way for renewing a light design. *A line of moving effects is also available (water and fire effect, gently falling snow, stars or notes etc.)

CONCEPTS We are working on new designs and projects all year round. Once a year we let you have a sneak-peek at some things in progress.

METAMORPHOSIS Metamorphosis is a fun concept to play with. Things look different from various angles and seem to change form as you move. For example, the butterfly tree or the classical rectangle tree. Go around and through to see different effects - shapes, video mapping, reflections or just classical lighting.

BOOKS COME TO LIFE As a part of the library project, we came up with an open cinema theme. Outdoor video mapping projectors show classical movies on huge books. Bright cubical city furniture with LED lighting to sit on and enjoy the experience under the night sky - this is something to try out.

INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS Interactivity is important. Take pictures with themes of your city or have a slide through a huge bear lit with LEDs - it will not leave you cold.

New Concepts

THE SEASONS While brainstorming new concepts for a client, we came up with a theme that includes classical elements from four seasons, which are interactive and HUGE. The enormousness gives them that fairy-tale feeling. To make snowﬂakes so big in size but keep them stable aluminum truss systems are used. For butterﬂy wings, we use strings that are illuminated with wallwashers – it keeps the cost low. Elements where people can sit on or walk through are lit with RGB LEDs to give them a dynamic look.

SASHA BECOMES ALIVE Extending the Sasha line with RGB Decolight, RGB wallwashers, for coloring the whole tree or just the stem to make them come alive and achieve that fairy-tale mystical forest eﬀect.

WALK-THROUGH FEONAS Extending Feona falling stars for increased interactivity, through making falling star fountains and walk through arcs.
