OBJECTIVE

Create or choose a brand for which to create a unique and innovative line of indoor and outdoor paints. Deliverables include a gallon, quart and spray paint for indoor use, and the same for outdoor use. SOLUTION

A set of hand-blended colors were created for Diesel Industries. The diesel enthusiast loves to wear their clothing and wants the diesel l i f e s t y l e t o c a r r y o v e r i n t o t h e i r h o m e d e c o r. T h e c o n c e p t o f t h i s l i n e was to create diesel inspired paint color that carry the attitude of the brand. These designer colors reflect the edgy and bold qualities of diesel. The line of paint is called “hazardous color”. Each color is named after some sort of hazardous material that reflects the mood of the color and the attitude of Diesel.

Create a set of deliverables including a book, poster and card set to p r o m o t e a l i n e o f p a p e r. T h e l i n e o f p a p e r c h o s e n w a s “ E v e r ” b y G m u n d . The materials delivered needed to display the wonderful qualities of the p a p e r a s w e l l a s t e l l a n e n t i c i n g s t o r y. SOLUTION

T h e c o n c e p t o f t h e p r o j e c t i s a s a t i r i c a l g u i d e t o l i v i n g f o r e v e r, a l i s t o f things one shouldn’t do if they choose to live a long life. The message that is ultimately conveyed is that you can either become a hermit and live a life of confinement, which will probably kill you as well, or cherish each day and live a fruitful and exciting life. A very bold and aggressive typeface was chosen as headline type and is paired with a playful rounded typeface to contrast and imply that this book should not b e t a k e n s e r i o u s l y, b y a n y o n e .

OBJECTIVE

Design and create a lamp for a company that has not entered the market of home goods. Along with the lamp, create a unique and i n n o v a t i v e p a c k a g i n g s y s t e m t h a t r e f l e c t s t h e v o i c e o f t h e c o m p a n y. SOLUTION

V i c t o r i a ’s S e c r e t w a s c h o s e n f o r w h i c h t o p r o d u c e a n e w l a m p d e s i g n . The lamp, named Illusion reflects a very feminine and classic style t h a t m a r r i e s w e l l w i t h V i c t o r i a ’s S e c r e t ’s c u r r e n t b r a n d i m a g e . T h e s o f t and subtle curves of the lamp structure mirror the curves of a woman. The lamp is made from separated layers of clear acrylic. Each layer of acrylic is etched with a piece of a pattern. An optical illusion is created when the lamp is viewed from straight on and a pattern is formed. The box in which the lamp comes in mimics a hat box featuring the t r a d i t i o n a l V i c t o r i a ’s s e c r e t p i n k s t r i p e p a t t e r n .

R3 is a collaborative effort to promote sustainable design. Students were asked to pick a common day product and redesign it to be more s u s t a i n a b l e a n d e n v i r o n m e n t a l l y f r i e n d l y. A b o o k a n d p r o d u c t t e m p l a t e s were created to showcase the reinvented product. SOLUTION

Asphalt covers nearly every paved road in America, why not put it to use? Every day thousands of kilowatts of energy are absorbed into asphalt in the form of heat via the sun. Solaroad, taps into this virtually u n l i m i t e d s o u r c e o f e n e r g y. S o l a r o a d i s a g r i d d e d e n e r g y c o l l e c t i o n system that lies right underneath the surface of the asphalt. These s o l a r- k i n e t i c p a d s t r a p t h e e n e r g y o f t h e s u n s h e a t a n d t r a n s f e r i t t o energy storage hubs located off of the street. The goal, to power entire cities off of the energy collected from their roads.

TITLE

DROWNING IN A FISHBOWL

SPECS

OBJECTIVE

Choose a director and invent a film festival featuring six films by the c h o s e n d i r e c t o r. F i n d a c o m m o n t h e m e i n t h e c h o s e n f i l m s t o c r e a t e a story and mood for the festival. An array of items including a catalogue, D V D s e t , e v e n t t i c k e t s , s o u n d t r a c k , p o s t e r, s t a t i o n e r y a n d p r o m o t i o n a l items will be created to promote the festival. SOLUTION

A film festival was created for the director Mike Nichols who is known f o r s u c h f i l m s a s T h e G r a d u a t e , W h o ’s A f r a i d o f V i r g i n i a W o o l f , T h e Birdcage, Biloxi Blues, Working Girl and Postcards from the Edge. A common theme in these films is that the main character in each film is scrutinized by the society around them for being different or following an unusual path. Following this theme, the festival was titled “Drowning i n a F i s h b o w l : A n I n s i d e r ’s l o o k a t t h e O u t s i d e r ’s P e r s p e c t i v e i n t h e Films of Mike Nichols”.

OBJECTIVE

Choose or invent a company for which to create a birdhouse made of 100% found or recycled materials. SOLUTION

A r t i c h o k e s a n d C o . w a s c h o s e n t o c r e a t e a b i r d h o u s e f o r. T h i s c o m p a n y specializes in creating high end floral arrangements and gift sets. An artichoke birdhouse was created using found copper paneling from the roof of an old building and a weathered wooden panel from a barn. The copper side panels of the birdhouse are hammered with an artichoke leaf pattern and patined to add a distressed look. The tiers of the birdhouse double as planting boxes or bird seed holders. An old iron spike was used as the perch. I would like to say thank you and I love you to my wonderful grandfather for helping me assemble t h i s b i r d h o u s e ! R-Wines Australia is known for their humorous and creative wine packaging. A new line of wine was created for the company called Drunk Dial. RETHINKING CHEAP

OBJECTIVE

Students are divided into teams of four to work in collaboration to create a branded house and a house of brands for the store Costco. In a d d i t i o n t o r e d e s i g n i n g t h e K i r k l a n d l i n e , C o s t c o ’s h o u s e b r a n d , i n v e n t private labels to be sold at Costco. SOLUTION

Our solution to the challenge was to organize Kirklands’ wide range of product into subcategories. Six different subdivisions of Kirkland were created; home, apparel, food, paper goods, cleaning and bath. As for t h e p r i v a t e l a b e l s , w e c r e a t e d a b a k e r y i n s i d e o f C o s t c o c a l l e d O l l i e ’s Baking Co. We also created 3 lines of products. A high end kitchen line called Counter 74, an eco-friendly kids line called Noc Noc and a line of power tools called Burley and Knapp.

We wanted the consumer to be able to see the product that they are buying. When you buy something in large quantities, you want to know y o u a r e g e t t i n g w h a t y o u a r e p a y i n g f o r. W e d i d e x a c t l y t h i s . I n e a c h packaging system for the Kirkland line, the product is clearly visible. In instances where the entire product cannot be shown such as with food products, we wrapped a high resolution image of the product around the packaging, the result, a very graphic and warm line of goods. When shopping for kitchen appliances, consumers want the most bang f o r t h e i r b u c k w i t h o u t s a c r i f i c i n g q u a l i t y. W e c r e a t e d C o u n t e r 7 4 t o do just that. Counter 74 is a commercial grade kitchen line made accessible to the general public, well, those with a Costco membership. No longer does one have to shell out hundreds of dollars at Williams S o n o m a f o r a t o a s t e r. T h e s e p r o d u c t s w e r e m a d e w i t h f a m i l y i n m i n d , large silverware and knife sets, and a high yielding coffee pot and toaster are among the products in this modern and stylish kitchen line.

SOLUTION

What better way to instill a green mentality into our children than to start them off at an early age. Noc Noc is an eco-friendly kids line packed with cuteness. All of the products in this line are made from recycled or biodegradable materials. For instance, the Noc Noc toy line features a dump truck, tea set, building blocks and beach toys made from 100 percent recycled milk cartons. All of the bath products in this line act as a container for the all natural products, but also as a toy for the child to play with while bathing. Refills are available as to limit waste.
