M A N I F E S T O I believe in architecture that paints light in a way that enriches every surface it casts itself upon. Scale, drama, surface, weight and form are all evident in the above image. It is an image by recently deceased Hong Kong street photographer Fan Ho. He was a master in capturing shape, light and emotion. I believe an architect should strive to do the same, in our medium

This project began on a harbour site in Galway. I immediately saw this as an opportunity to create something reminiscent of a castle, as their large austere walls and position close to water lend themselves to the site. I began to look at how to inhabit a wall and create something modern, yet capture the essence of a castle on the sea. I began looking at Louis Kahn and Peter Zumthor who specialised in form and materiality; two elements I wanted at the core of the design. The organisation in plan is based on a heirarchy of space where I decided to place the hard edge of the fish market space to the sea edge, allowing the residential portion to inhabit the quieter harbour area. The sloped edges of the walls are made to immitate a castle boundary wall, which gave the walls an added thickness. This added thickness is what allowed me to experiment with placing service elements within the walls. The themes explored were an early version of my manifesto, which is a constant theme in this portfolio.

This project began on an infill site in Kilkenny City. The site is split in two by a small river which dictated the geometry of the design. I began to study the brief and a heirarchy of program in order to mass the initial concept. From there I began refining the design with ideas I was interested in. My manifesto has a substantial influence on all of my designs. My interest in light and scale are a constant in everything I do, and I felt a library scheme was the perfect platform to illustrate these ideas. There are three masses in the design; the library, the museum and the reception ‘bridge’. The latter of which was a design element used to transcend the river in an elegant way. The primary design reference was RCR’s Joan Oliver library, which snakes and slaloms its way around a courtyard. With emphasis placed on the prominade through the building and creating a variety of different reading environments, this project became one of the richest and well thought out projects in my time in architecture so far. It embodies a lot of what I want my architecture to be in the future.

This project began on an urban site in Kilkenny, with a view towards the River Nore and beyond to St. Canice’s Cathedral. I began to design using the brief to create a mass. The massing was influenced by the sharp incline of the site, and the site’s proximity to a road. I began to group the program from the brief which eventually led me to the project’s ‘pairs of villas’ where the classrooms are paired off in plan to created shared spaces. This design move allowed the circulation to be free to move and snake in different ways. This is similar to the library project, where I used the experimentation with the architectural prominade in this scheme to reference in the library scheme. Drawing from the themes in my manifesto, I once again experimented with light and scale; and their relationship with primary school children. The scheme has a series of play areas throughtout; one above the General Purpose Hall, one sandwiched between classrooms, and the largest being the green space which is sheltered by the ‘L shape’ in plan.

K I N D E R G A R T E N This project began on a greenfield site in Galway, with a view towards the River Corrib and close to the Black Box Theatre. I began to design using the brief to create a rhythm. The rhythm was influenced by the lack of any inherent orders on the site as well as the presence of an old railway ridge to the north of the scheme. I began to group the program from the brief which evenually led me to the project’s three masses where the classrooms are in one mass, the admin another, and the gymnasium is in the third mass. This design move allowed the circulation to be fixed against the three masses and connect them. The form is organised around a protected play area in the centre which backs on to the old railway ridge. This is perhaps the earliest example I have of my interest in scale and drama in buildings. The fins are directly visible inside and outside the building, with their scale helping to emphasise the order placed on the scheme.
