RENOVATION/EXPANSION DESIGN COMPETITION
SPREAD 1/2 Invited to join a team comprised of LMN architects and AC Martin, Melendrez was the landscape architect firm charged with developing a master plan for the expansion of the LA Convention Center. Transforming Pico Blvd. into a strong connector to downtown, both for pedestrians and vehicles alike, was the first goal. Reenvisioning Gil Lindsay Plaza was the second, as there is a need for a large flex space for events, and to create a multifaceted space that could be utilized by the surrounding community. The third objective was to introduce an elevated promenade, dubbed “Angeles Arcade” that allowed for unimpeded access from Pico Blvd. to LA Live.

SPREAD 1/2 Gensler approached Melendrez to take on a massive new development in the heart of downtown LA. Coined “Metropolis,” the development is comprised of two phases. Phase 1 consists of two high rise towers, one hotel, the other residential. A large arrival plaza and drop off begins the arrival experience. Guests and residents ascend upward to either one of two podium decks seated atop the 5th and 6th stories. These spaces provide outdoor amenities for the hotel guests and residents alike; both are divided into various spaces, containing a multitude of program elements expected in any high end hotel and residential development.

MIXED-USE TRANSIT STATION
SPREAD 1/2 The expansion of the Expo transit line into Culver City has sparked new development along the lengths of the tracks. At the intersections of Washington, National, and Venice Boulevards, a mixed use development has been sited, and IS comprised of office, retail, residential, and hotel units. Between the adjacent buildings, Melendrez has developed a public park for the surrounding community, as well as the workers and residents of the development. The idea of “Big Nature is the driving force of the park design. The goal is to illustrate a naturalistic landscape transect along one constantly sloped plane, beginning with monolithic raised planters housing massive oaks, terminating at a 14,000 sf. event lawn and bioswale that dives 3 feet below the finished plaza grade. Many design and engineering challenges needed to be overcome, as there are three levels of parking below the entire development. The project is entering the Design Development Phase.

3 PHASE MIXED USE RESIDENTIAL SPREAD 1/2 The Vanke Gouzhuang residential project is a 3 phase mixed use development. Phase 1 of the development was the commercial shopping street. It is characterized by a linear striped shopping streetscape, interrupted by 3 circulation nodes which are indicated to the shoppers and vehicles by a fractalated polygonal pavement pattern. This pattern is combined with various program elements, such as water jets, and raised platforms, which delineate space for different forms of social interaction. along the street scape, nodes for resting and meeting have been created through fixed seating elements, situated between planters that match the polygonal design language.

3 PHASE MIXED USE RESIDENTIAL SPREAD 2/2 Phase 2 of the three phase development was a riverfront designed for public use, that must also integrate the elevated private residential area, for which it had to include two access gates. The design uses landform, planting typologies, and design language to facilitate a sequential experience that transports pedestrians from urbanity to being immersed in a wetland boardwalk. Phase 3 involves the majority of the site is a residential development, comprised of a series of spaces ranging in scales. Two large community open spaces connect residents to the waterfront. When residents venture home, they encounter the neighborhood nodes. These are areas that give residents a sense of identity to their region of the development. Building courtyards are the smallest scale spaces and were designed to provide residents a relaxing escape amongst bamboo groves.

LIVE-IN HIGH SCHOOL/BOARDING SCHOOL
Kunshan West High School was a design competition won by iPD. I was fortunate enough to be one of the lead designers involved from original workshop phase through concept, schematic, and beginnings of design documentation phases. Heavy emphasis was placed on the local Kunshan culture to integrate ancient knowledge into student’s everyday life and interactions at the school. The entry experience into the campus is a choreographed series of spaces. First, students enter the three kings plaza at the south. They then encounter the traditional Kunshan Chinese Garden, followed by Kunshan Opera Lake, and finally making their way to the Lotus Pond Living Quarters. The classroom courtyards were also a major consideration. Classrooms were consolidated based on their program usage, so each courtyard was designed specifically to accentuate what the students would be learning in each area.

RESORT HOTEL, RESIDENTIAL & HIGH END COMMERCIAL RETAIL
IPD received a commission to design a high end retail, resort, and residential development. The development was divided into two halves; commercial shopping all to the east, and resort and residential area to the west. In the center of the residential and resort area resides the main pool. The clubhouse inserts itself along the central axis of the site directly adjacent to the pool. The design intent was to create a gradient from the most public region in the east, contrasting the most intimate settings on the western edge of the resort. Private cabanas and hot tubs, give way to community lounge areas, in pool bar, elevated lap pool with infinity edge, and the central play pool with water slide and sand beach. The commercial shopping area involved designing the ground level, and handling a grade difference of 1.5 meters between the building FFE and the adjacent street level. A landform buffer was subsequently created to help maintain the shopping experience next to the building, and specific access ramps were created along the landform buffer. At the southern end of the commercial area, terraces combined with playful step design create cafe spaces and gathering nodes for shoppers.

HIGH TECH LIVE IN CAMPUS
Genway I-Park was a design competition to create an all inclusive green campus for innovative high tech companies to house their chinese headquarters. The main design initiative was to create an ecologically beneficial campus that would provide those who lived and worked there with plenty of opportunities for exercise and recreation. The concept framework for the campus put the most emphasis on creating an iconic identity based heavily off Ivy League College campus precedents. An orchestrated experience begins when people pass through the entry axis’s, that open up the the campus cultural core. The campus core is a showcase of the most contemporary sustainable design implementations, while being the core for social and physical activity.

ECO TOURISM RESORT & REGIONAL BIKE TRAIL CONNECTION
IPD has received multiple commissions to develop parks along the shoreline of Yungchen Lake. The client came back to iPD with a desire to create an eco tourism resort. After discussing with this long-term client, the idea was conceived to create a regional bike route along with the eco-resort. By linking the various parks to the south with the eco-resort, a completely pedestrian oriented, truly sustainable infrastructure, for a large section of the Yungchen Lake Waterfront would be created. This aligned perfectly with the goals driving the creation of the eco-resort. The resort would showcase agriculture and aquaculture practices that are common throughout the region. The design would accentuate the existing site conditions, through natural habitat creation and the expansion of the complex network of ecological environments. Along with all this, the main aim was to create a recreational and ecological tourism destination where sustainable practices could be developed and showcased through worldwide expositions.

WETLAND HABITAT CREATION & REGIONAL BIKE TRAIL CONNECTION
In order to connect the assorted pedestrian park infrastructure systems that were already in existence, gaps between the parks had to be filled. This meant that brand new sections of bikeway had to be developed. In one particular section, a very complex set of circumstances, which included not disturbing the lake floor, resulted in the development of an unprecedented trail system. A walkway would be suspended upon the water surface, kept afloat by buoyant devices. Habitat for birds and aquatic plants was created through the employment of floating islands. These islands are positioned along the trail to create and frame views of the lake, and adjacent shoreline, while also providing ideal avian habitat. Three resting docks were designed to break up the riding experience. On these docks, shade structures were designed specifically for bird and wildlife observation. Plant species selection was a key design factor; plants were chosen not only for their aesthetic quality, but most importantly by which species of birds they would attract. The aim of the project was to create a beneficial symbiotic ecosystem that would exist naturally, that yet is suspended upon a completely human engineered system.

URBAN COMMERCIAL CENTER DESIGN COMPETITION
The company SOHO China hosted a design competition for a new commercial center in the epicenter of the northern Shanghai commercial region. The complex would incorporate office towers, along with street level shopping, and a subterranean mall spanning across the entirety of the site. The main focuses of the site design were to identify the spaces for which to develop the iconic character of the center, and design a streetscape shopping experience that was unique, yet rooted in time tested pedestrian street design principles. Four nodes were identified, and program developed based of site analysis and building usages. The southeast and northwest corners were identified as a key nodes to create the character for the development due to its high visibility from many angles, and their exceptional access to sunlight would allow for the creation of urban garden space. Two central plazas were sited at access points to the subterranean levels of the mall. One being an outdoor gathering space, organized around the entry stairway which dives beneath a transparent surface water feature.

BSLA THESIS PROJECT SPREAD 2/2 I wanted to develop a project that worked to improve the aesthetic qualities of parts of Old Town that have become sterile environments, while seeking Humans have long been altering and destroying the natural environment. There is a need in today’s world for the beautification of dilapidated urban and rural spaces. Through this project I hoped to improve unsightly spaces in order to improve the quality of the landscape around old town, which in turn will improve the quality of life for residents of fort Collins. I also felt the need to educate the public about what measures are being taken to change societies old ways of tossing nature aside, and put nature and humans on the same playing field by immersing research labs and exhibits within the landscape itself. By doing this, my hope is it will raise public awareness to the global issues we all face and encourage them all to become more ecologically conscious. Allow the interaction of natural systems to function with those of the human system.
