Program notes:

A Clear Midnight was the first piece that I composed while working with David Ashley White. According to poet and scholar Edward Hirsch, Whitman’s text, first included in his seventh edition of Leaves of Grass (1881), deals with “releasing the soul back into the universe.” My interpretation depicts the experience of death as a warm embrace, a lesson in acceptance and patience. The premiere of A Clear Midnight was given by members of the University of Houston Moores School of Music Concert Chorale on April 14, 2015 under the direction of Eric Laine.
