NEW DELHI: Ericsson expects to win a few Voice over LTE (VoLTE) contracts in India by this year end, using similar deployments in advanced markets such as Japan, South Korea and North America, and added that the upcoming spectrum sale will drive more network investments next fiscal. "We are working hard on it, and hope to get new deals during this year," Paolo Colella, head of Region, Ericsson India, told ET. Ericsson's arch rival Nokia has managed to grab all the initial VoLTE contracts in India — from Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India. While the Jio contract is for a panIndia deployment, the deals from leading two telcos — Airtel and Vodafone — are smaller in nature and are focused on a few tier1 service areas. In a VoLTE scenario, voice calls, typically, will be provisioned over a 4G LTE data network, instead of the circuit switched 2G or 3G networks which are commonly used. The VoLTE technology allows voice to become just another app that rides on an LTE data network.

Besides VoLTE, Colella said that other areas such as mobile broadband, telecom services, OSS/BSS, IP transport are likely to grow in the next fiscal starting April 1, given telcos' investment plans for 3G and 4G deployments. He also feels that the upcoming spectrum auction likely in JuneJuly will also drive telcos' network investments in India.

Ericsson to help in India's digital transformation: Swedish PM "Ericsson will have an important role to play in India's digital transformation," PM of Sweden Stefan Lofven said. "Operator investments will remain at least the same pace as last year with continued focus on deployment of 3G and 4G," he said. India is considering putting up for sale airwaves in the traditional 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands. Besides, the sector regulator wants the government to also auction the most efficient but expensive 700 MHz band, used for 4G. "There is a big demand emerging in the market as smartphone penetration reaches 100 million. We have been surprised by the availability of more and more 4G smartphones at decent prices, and this will further accelerate demand for mobile broadband," he said. "So the operators will continue to roll out." Ericsson, which is working with Jio on the OSS front, expects to further deepen its ties with the telecom operator, which is likely to launch commercial services around April. Apple should not try making a car on its own: Fiat CEO Reuters | Mar 3, 2016, 12.43 PM IST

GENEVA: US technology giant Apple should collaborate with carmakers to make a vehicle and use the expertise already available rather than attempt to do it on its own, Fiat Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne said. A source told Reuters last year that the Californiabased maker of phones, computers and watches was exploring how to make an entire vehicle, not just designing automotive software or individual components.

Apple Car to cost $55,000: Report According to alphr, a 68page note from the analysts looking into Apple's automotive endeavour predicts that the car will retail for an average price of $55,000 Speaking to journalists at the Geneva auto show, Marchionne said there was sufficient capacity available among car makers to deal with Apple's requirements and it would make more sense for them to partner with a car manufacturer rather than become an actor itself in such a "complex business."

Why Steve Jobs didn't pursue Apple car Tony Fadell, then a senior vice president at Apple, remembers talking with Jobs about the potential for an iCar. "If they have any urges to make a car, I'd advise them to lie down and wait until the feeling passes," Marchionne told journalists. "Illnesses like this come and go, you will recover from them, they're not lethal." RELATED

We are working with most tierI auto makers on selfdriving cars: TomTom CEO Harold Goddijn Priyanka Sangani | ET Bureau | Mar 3, 2016, 12.25 PM IST

Set up in 1991 in Amsterdam, TomTom was among the first companies to see the potential in digital navigation, entering the space in 2001. While India is relatively small in terms of revenue for the 1billion company, which is also present in the wearables space, it's a crucial part of its business, employing almost a quarter of its global workforce. Pune houses TomTom's largest development centre globally, and in an interview, Harold Goddijn, CEO, TomTom said that the plan was to take the India headcount from 700 to 1,000 by the end of 2016. Edited excerpts: What kind of work does the Pune centre do for TomTom? We make digital maps — we have our own personal navigation devices (PND) and also do licensing work for other companies like Apple. The team here works on engineering and map operations. They build the tools which will be used to build the maps, as well as work on building the maps themselves. All our network operations are also monitored from here, as well as internal IT services.

TomTom launches GPS fitness watch Spark in India TomTom has launched four GPSenabled fitness watches under its Spark range in the Indian market. The company has also released variants of these watches with in built music player. What kind of work do you do for Apple and Uber? Apple uses our maps and data for providing locationbased services, as well as real time traffic information in 50 countries. Our maps are on all Apple devices, except in China and Japan. We licence our maps to other automobile makers as well. What new areas is TomTom working on? We are working with most tierI auto makers on selfdriving cars. We are creating maps which are different from the traditional maps, with a higher degree of precision, which will be used to keep the car on the road. There would be sensors through which the car can see other objects on the road as well as positioning technology, accurate to up to five centimetres. There will also be technology in the cars to measure if the road data is still accurate or if the road has changed. While selfdrive cars are still a few years away, we could see this technology on the roads soon, used either for enhanced safety features or cruise control. What are the main business areas for you globally? We are present in three areas — consumer (PND and wearables), licensing technology to companies like Apple and auto firms, and telematics or fleet management. These contribute 50, 40 and 10% to our revenue respectively, and all segments are growing well for us. After a few slow years, we grew in 2015 and expect this momentum to continue. How big are your India operations and what are the challenges of creating maps for India? The current market is small, but we see opportunities for navigation and wearables. There is increased awareness and demand for health and fitness trackers and we are building the market here. Mapping has its challenges and we've come up with a sophisticated system to overcome it. Through Mapcode, each location is assigned a number which can be used for navigation purposes. We are also in talks with the Pune administration for helping with real time traffic management using our data as part of their Smart City initiative. RELATED

Read More HYDERABAD: Paytm has introduced Hindi interface on its seller app to expand seller base in tierII and III cities. The interface will also help the marketplace scaleup its onlinetooffline business for shipping large appliances and electronics beyond the current base of 10 cities. "The top10 cities of sellerapp usage include metros as well as cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur and others. These sellers usually deal in unstructured categories such as fashion, home and lifestyle products, and the demand to develop a locallanguage interface has come from the seller meetings," said Sudhanshu Gupta, vicepresident of business at Paytm. The Hindi interface launched two weeks ago has seen an increase in engagement time and number of active users on the app. The sellers can access data on their performance in the local language. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/technews/EricssoneyesVoLTEcontractsinIndiabyyearend/articleshow/51238226.cms

The launch is keeping on par with the target of onboarding 5lakh sellers by the end of 2016. The company currently has 1.5lakh sellers onboard, while SoftBank backed rival Snapdeal has 2.5lakh sellers and Flipkart has more than 85,000 merchants on the platform. "We will be adding more local languages over the next quarter as we have seen increasing number of sellers in the age group of 2030 years using the app from Hubli, Rourkela and other cities," added Gupta. The move to increase the seller base has seen multiple marketplace initiatives being launched by the ecommerce platforms. There have been multiple tieups to provide capital, digital and marketing solutions to the seller base through third party vendors. RELATED

Read More Digital privacy advocates have called on a US federal judge to approve Apple Inc's request not to be compelled to build software to help the FBI unlock an iPhone used by one of the shooters in the San Bernardino attack. The American Civil Liberties Union, Access Now and the Wickr Foundation laid out arguments in amicus briefs released on Wednesday ahead of a March 22 hearing in which Judge Sheri Pym will review Apple's appeal of a court order demanding it help unlock a phone used by Rizwan Farook. Read also Facebook, Twitter support Apple on encryption dispute Alphabet Inc's Google, Facebook Inc, Microsoft Corp and Twitter Inc also plan to file similar briefs, Twitter, Microsoft and people familiar with the plans of the other two companies said last week. The ACLU argued that the FBI's request would undermine the privacy and security of Americans by forcing a private firm to act as its investigative agent, seeking information that it does not already possess. "Law enforcement may not commandeer innocent third parties into becoming its undercover agents, its spies, or its hackers," according to a draft of the brief obtained by Reuters. Access Now and the Wickr Foundation, which both advise activists on digital privacy, said in a joint brief that complying with the order would undermine human rights around the globe. MUMBAI: South Korean smartphone maker Samsung Mobiles has emerged as the most trusted brand in the country followed by Sony and LG, while Tata Group is the only Indian corporate to figure in the top five, a survey said. International Business Machines Corp filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against daily deals website operator Groupon Inc alleging infringement of its patents. The complaint, filed at the US District Court for the District of Delaware, accuses Groupon of building its business model using IBM's patents without authorization despite prior warnings. "Groupon has refused to engage in any meaningful discussions about reaching a license agreement to end its infringement of IBM's patents," IBM's complaint said. The plaintiff IBM further accuses Groupon to have continued to willfully infringe its patents, obtaining significant benefits without paying any compensations to IBM. IBM filed a lawsuit against Priceline Group Inc last year, accusing it of infringing four IBM patents in running its travel and dining websites. RELATED

Brazil judge orders release of Facebook executive AFP | Mar 3, 2016, 11.22 AM IST

SAO PAULO: A Brazilian judge ordered the release today of Facebook's vice president for Latin America, a day after he was arrested for refusing to hand over WhatsApp messages to the police investigating a drugs case. The judge, Ruy Pinheiro, considered the detention of Diego Dzodan in Sao Paulo on Monday "unlawful coercion," the court in Sergipe state said in a statement. "It seems to me that the extreme measure of imprisonment was hurried," Pinheiro said. Facebook, which owns the popular WhatsApp mobile phone messaging tool, denies it has tried to obstruct the police probe. Dzodan had been arrested on the request of a lower court judge in Sergipe and accused of "repeated noncompliance with court orders" to share Facebook data, federal police said. "This information was required to produce evidence to be used in an organized crime and drug trafficking investigation," police said. According to Brazilian media reports, traffickers had been using WhatsApp to discuss their business. When Facebook refused to comply, Brazilian authorities imposed fines, starting with 50,000 reais (about $12,500) daily beginning two months ago, and which rose to 1 million reais ($250,000) a month ago, Sergipe federal police told AFP. US billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's companies slammed Brazil's approach. "We are disappointed with the extreme and disproportionate measure of having a Facebook executive escorted to a police station in connection with a case involving WhatsApp, which operates separately from Facebook," Facebook said in a statement. "Facebook has always been and will be available to address any questions Brazilian authorities may have." WhatsApp insisted that it had no technical means for cooperating. "We are disappointed that law enforcement took this extreme step. WhatsApp cannot provide information we do not have," it said in a statement. It's not the first armwrestle between Brazilian justice authorities and Facebook. In December, a judge ordered the suspension of WhatsApp for 12 hours after it failed to hand over information during another criminal investigation. The stoppage, which provoked widespread anger, was overturned on appeal. Three years ago, Google was in the firing line. The search engine giant's top Brazil executive was accused of breaking election laws when he refused to remove videos on YouTube that were critical of a mayoral candidate in Mato Grosso do Sul state. In the United States, Apple is embroiled in its own row with the government over a refusal to cooperate with the FBI in unlocking an iPhone used by one of the shooters in a mass killing by a couple in San Bernardino, California, last year. Shooting gives me mindset to achieve goals: Rajesh Manpat Kiran Sajan | TNN | Mar 3, 2016, 10.12 AM IST

Manpat developed a robotic solution for managing goods in warehouses of ecommerce ventures. BENGALURU: While looking through the closed sight lens of his rifle in his debut competition in the national shooting championship, Rajesh Manpat, a state champion from Bengaluru, had two targets in his mind to become the national champion and to start a venture to support the increasing expense of shooting championships. He beat both targets. Manpat equalled the national record in that competition, went on to win the firstever open national medal for the state and a national games medal in air rifle shooting, and made the cut to the national team. And then he founded a pioneering company in robotics, one of whose products brought down the expense of target practice for shooters by 60%. But more on that later. Manpat was doing engineering when he participated in the national shooting championship and founded the venture. "I got the confidence to start up when I discussed my plan with a guy who I met at a cousin's office, where I used to hang out during my free time. We used to discuss about the developments in the IT sector and had common interests. In 2008, we together founded iFuture Systems that built a machine vision system. It was a system to learn and was a system to identify defects in machines in the manufacturing industry," Manpat says. They were young and ambitious. Demand was large because there weren't many other companies doing the same thing. They took on a lot of challenging tasks. But that proved to be their undoing. They couldn't service their customers adequately and suffered substantial monetary loss. Desperate, they even started doing some financial services to earn money. There came a time when Manpat's cofounder felt he had had enough and quit to join another company. "He said he had to take care of his family," Manpat says. The two remain good friends even today, but at the time, the company became entirely Manpat's responsibility. A few employees remained with iFuture, and together with them, Manpat built an electronic target system for shooting sports in 2013. The system, which he christened Elite Scorer, became an instant success because it dramatically lowered the cost of target practice. Today, the product is sold in 25 countries, in the sports and defence markets.

Another big success followed in 2015, when Manpat developed a robotic solution for managing goods in warehouses of ecommerce ventures. Last month, the product, called Ark Robot, came first in the QPrize Make in India contest organized by Qualcomm in association with the Centre's department of industrial policy and promotion. Manpat has so far filed eight patent applications for the product.

The 31yearold says his experience with shooting sports has helped a lot in achieving his goals. "It gives you the mindset to win even in the face of setbacks. The experience helps you do enterprise resource planning, set success principles and teach work ethics," he says. His next target: scale up and build more intelligent products. RELATED
