SAFETY
MAKE IT A HOLIDAY NOT A HAZARD Who doesn’t love a spectacular fireworks display? With July 4th just around the corner, there will be plenty of shows lighting up the night skies for everyone to enjoy. The key is having the best time possible though, is make sure you stay safe. The safest way to experience a great fireworks show is to attend a public fireworks display and leave the hard work and risk to the professionals.
HOWEVER, IF FIREWORKS ARE LEGAL TO BUY WHERE YOU LIVE AND YOU DECIDE TO USE THEM, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE SAFETY TIPS: • Never allow young children to handle fireworks. Older children should use them only under close adult supervision • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands • Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks • Never use illegal fireworks • Never light them indoors or near dry grass • Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material • Never point or throw fireworks at another person
• Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If one doesn’t go off, do not try to re-light it or handle it. Put it out with water and dispose of it. • If someone is injured by fireworks, seek a doctor’s help immediately • Never ignite devices in a container and only light them one at a time. Maintain a safe distance after lighting. • Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire • If a child or adult suffers an eye injury make sure they do not touch or rub it
You also need to take special care with sparklers, which can burn at about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals. Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing and children can receive severe burns from dropping them on their feet. According to the National Fire Protection Association, sparklers alone account for more than 25 percent of emergency room visits for fireworks injuries. Consider using safer alternatives, such as glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers. 3
