It has been said that Libra is physically the most beautiful sign of the zodiac. This applies to the boys (although we should say “handsome for them). They often have dimples and always have great smiles. They can be a bit shy until they get to know you. The symbol is the scales and they seek balance in relationships and friendships. In other words, “if you are good to them, they will be good to you. They do not like to be alone. If you need to punish a Libran, please don’t send them to their room because they will invent an imaginary playmate to keep them company. They get along very well with other children and willingly share their toys. They love sweets and need to be encouraged to follow a proper diet. Of course, desserts are their favorite. They like pastel colors and soft fabrics. Keep this in mind when you decorate their rooms. They will want to be with you when you shop for their clothes. Be patient because they are SLOW to make decisions.

Free Books for Hancock County Kids Kids under the age of five who live in Hancock County can get a free age-appropriate book every month by registering with the Literacy Coalition Network. The book program, entering its second year, was made possible by a partnership between the Literacy Coalition Network of Hancock County and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The LCN coordinates and supports community initiatives that promote lifelong literacy. LCN officials discovered a need to target preschool-aged children for increased literacy and will test the effectiveness of the program in years to come. Bill McAllister, director of the LCN, said the program has been well-received in the community with about 850 children currently enrolled. “Parents and grandparents tell us how excited kids get when the books come in the mail,” McAllister said. “They come addressed to the child in clear wrap so they can see the book, and the children just want to read it right away.” Any child living in Hancock County from birth to age five is eligible for the program. Registration forms are available at most child care centers and many churches in Findlay. -SM

Celebrate All Things German at Findlay’s First Oktoberfest Downtown Findlay will celebrate some of Hancock County’s roots with a festival of German-inspired fun. New this year, Oktoberfest Findlay! is slated for Sept. 26 from 2 to 10 p.m. on Main Street between Main Cross and Sandusky Streets. Downtown Findlay Coordinator Maria Reza said the festival evolved as a result of the large German culture that exists in the county and residents’ nostalgic memories of other area “Germanfests.” After further researching the Findlay area’s German roots, Reza and a group of some 40 committee members planned the fest. Already 200 volunteers strong, the familyfriendly festival will feature German music, polka dancing on a wooden floor, a Volkswagen car show, children’s activities, a yodeling contest, brat eating contest, and a pageant for girls ages 4 to 18. Libations will also be available, with the official ‘tapping of the keg’ by Mayor Lydia Mihalik at 4:30pm. Reza said it has been exciting to see how the community has rallied in cooperation for this first year event. Sponsors include: Alexandria’s, Rochester Mills Beer Company, Hancock County Convention and Visitors Bureau, 100.5 WKXA, 1330 WFIN, 106.3 The Fox, Taylor Volkswagon of Findlay, Cooper Tires, Beerco, Eastman and Smith Ltd. Attorneys at Law, TJD Industrial Services, and Fifth Third Bank. -KM For a complete schedule of events, visit DowntownFindlay.com, or the Oktoberfest Findlay! Facebook page. To volunteer, contact Reza at 419-422-3313. Forms for bands and pageant contestants can be found on the web site. Admission tickets will be sold the day of the event at marked entrances. Cost is $5 for adults 21 and over and $3 for individuals under 21.

University of Findlay Offering Free Mobile Science Lab The University of Findlay’s College of Education is offering a free mobile interactive science lab for schools in Hancock county called Derrick’s Oiler Learning Express, providing an option for teachers interested in getting their students out of the traditional classroom for outdoor learning. The lab will travel to schools or other approved locations in Hancock County - such as a park - with equipment needed for interactive science experiments. All experiments are aligned with the Ohio Academic Content Standards with the goal of keeping students engaged by asking questions. The exercises, designed for grades 4-6, can be adapted for kindergarten through 12th grade in the categories of soil, skeletons, water, atmosphere and space, and biodiversity, with more added throughout the school year. Students will have the chance to check out fossils, rock collections, skulls, soil samples, squirrel pelts and more. Also available are microscopes, and equipment to test water turbidity and quality with PH sensors.-SM To learn more or to sign up visit findlay.edu/education/Derrick’s-Learning-Express. The University of Findlay also offers teacher training in association with the program.

Furniture Moving to Findlay

26

Sept

After some major expansion and remodeling, the former Rettig Brothers Furniture re-opened its doors in August as Art Van Findlay. “We want to be the leader in the Findlay market,” said Tony Rettig, who will continue as owner and president of Art Van Findlay. “Art Van has a style and design department that we think will appeal to just about everybody, from traditional to contemporary design.” Art Van held a grand opening ceremony with Mayor Lydia Mihalik and a ribbon cutting in August, during which the furniture store donated $2,500 to CASA/GAL of Hancock County. During the store’s grand opening celebration, Rettig said a $1,000 shopping spree will be given away, and patrons can find specials of up to 65 percent off on much of the store’s merchandise. The celebration will run through September 14. Rettig said they have modified the store’s 60,000 square feet with a more open feel while also converting some warehouse space into a showroom. There is about 30 percent more furniture on display with several new product lines available, such as Lazy-Boy, Natuzzi Leather, Flexsteel, along with specialty areas with Art Van PureSleep and Art Van Clearance Center. Unique among other Art Van stores, Rettig said, Findlay’s gallery will feature about 5,000 square feet of Amish Originals, solid wood furniture made by Ohio Amish artisans. “I think the place looks fantastic,” Rettig said.“ I’m very happy with how it turned out.” While still locally owned and operated, the franchise affiliation provides the advantages of far stronger buying power and the ability to get the furniture to the customer faster. “In the past, it would be four to six weeks for delivery,” Rettig said. “Now, even if we don’t have it in our warehouse, it should be one or two days.” -SM 10300 U.S. 224 W., Findlay, 419-425-4663. Art Van operates 90 stores throughout Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana and is headquartered in Warren, Michigan.

Heart so a

big Beth and Jon Krehbiel give a lesson on love by Kerry Trautman

You’ve heard the story before: Boy meets Girl. Boy and Girl fall in love, marry and raise three children. Boy and Girl adopt ten more children. Ok, maybe this story is unique. Once, a young woman named Beth Garlock was raising a toddler son from a previous marriage, when she met her now husband, Jon Krehbiel in the Findlay hotel where she worked as the dining room manager. “When we met and talked about our hopes and dreams for life, we both agreed that having a large family would be FUN,” Beth says. They fell in love, married, had a son, then a daughter. Their story took a turn, however, when their daughter was eighteen months old, and their doctor delivered the news couples often fear—they would have no more children. They were saddened but in time made peace with this chapter of their story.

Unfinished Business

The Krehbiel’s oldest kids attended public school, and before long, the kids were driving. All was well, but still something felt unfinished. “When our youngest was 16, we…began to think we still had some parenting in us, so we decided to pursue…adoption, thinking no one would want to let us adopt kids since we were so OLD!” says Beth. “We believed that if God wanted us to have another child, He would open the doors.” The doors did open—to a sibling pair. The family welcomed a 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl into their home. Once again came bedtime stories, bikes, and board games. But parenting now had a backstory—one of “trauma and loss,” says Beth. “We had never dealt with those parts of parenting in such a deep way. But, we have a huge support system, lots of fellow adoptive families, who look just like us and deal with the same issues we see.” 10

In the last eight years, the changing economy led Jon, who works in the computer industry, to contract employment. The family now often travels with him where he can find work, moving between their home and a secondary residence at Jon’s worksite for months, or sometimes up to a year. The children are growing up, learning to read and do long division, taking their education on the road through a church-related school.

Coming Together

The older children loved their new siblings. Those who had already left home chose to move back so they could get to know the little ones more closely. “[T]here was definitely an adjustment period after the honeymoon, that felt like, ‘Oh no, can we REALLY do this?’ But… like in marriage…you stick to your commitment, even when it gets hard! And, the blessings will outweigh the hard things,” says Beth. Eventually the older children married, beginning new chapters of their lives. Still feeling they had more love to share, the Krehbiels considered another adoption, possibly a sibling pair. Once again their offer was multiplied, and they were presented with four Ethiopian siblings—an older girl, boy/girl twins, and a younger girl. Instantly they were the large family they had always envisioned. And yet the family kept growing—with another adoption of twin, twoyear-old Ethiopian sisters. “They were so sweet and melted into us immediately!” says Beth. “If you would ask them about their life before, they would tell you this is their only life. Still we keep their home country in our lives through stories from the bigger Ethiopian kids and through foods, clothing, jewelry and music from their country, etc.”

By this time, the Krehbiels also had a third grandchild on the way, and they enjoyed watching the grandchildren and their newly-adopted children grow and play together. Later came the family’s final adoption—this time of two more boys. With a family this large, one can imagine the Krehbiels receive their share of unsolicited opinions. “We have heard…‘are you crazy?’ from our (older children) as well as extended family and friends,” says Beth, “but, they always…learn to love these precious kids. It’s easy to question whether you should spend so much money to adopt or not, before you’ve seen their face and know their story, but, once you KNOW them, it is much clearer what is the right thing to do!”

Still Improving Their Parenting

Raising young children all over again after having raised three could be stressful, but Beth says, “(We) are so much more relaxed this time around, that we feel we are doing a better job. We are much better at not sweating the small stuff!” The children know they are loved and play a special role in developing their family’s

“We hear them talking at night, singing, telling little inside jokes…making memories that will last all their lives.” The children rotate chores, are expected to pick up after themselves, and learn life’s values. “(T)hink of others first…if it isn’t yours, don’t touch it! Be kind, loving, speak with respect...follow the Golden Rule!” When the family is out and about, Beth, now 58, and Jon, 57, admit to receiving some stares from strangers, but they realize folks are usually just curious, and they encourage empty nesters to consider adopting and making a home for hurting kids. “We have had many comments about our family, but, we take those as an opportunity to be advocates for adoption and to show humility. When we see people looking at us, we smile and welcome their questions. We hope we represent adoption and big families, well.” Beth says they always feel welcome when they return to visit family in Findlay or Bluffton, where they both graduated from high school. “We love Findlay and feel it has the best of everything in regard to raising kids,” she says. “We will always think of Findlay as HOME.”

“Our family motto is: ‘If I could choose again, I’d still choose you!’ unique story. “Our family motto is: ‘If I could choose again, I’d still choose you!’ Maintaining such a large household requires sticking to a routine, little tolerance of picky eating, and assigned seats at the dinner table and in the car—ahem—bus. There are shared clothing items and handme-downs, “I HATE socks!” jokes Beth. “Think 22 feet a day times seven days a week! Did you do the math? Now imagine pairing them!” The Krehbiels have a large home with a pool on two-and-a-half acres of land, but the children do share bedrooms. “They NEVER complain that they want their own rooms,” says Beth.

• September 2015 • www.findlayfamily.com

Three of the Krehbiels’ children now are married, with five grandchildren among them. “We have only just begun, with ten still unmarried…we can envision a HUGE family in the future!” So yes, when Boy meets Girl, neither can predict their future story. The Krehbiels, however, are thrilled with how their unique plot has evolved. “Overall adoption is a blessing…even when things are HARD! The hard times give you something to gauge how great the good things REALLY are! We have told the kids that adoption is another word for love.”

Wilson’s 600 S. Main St., Findlay

Historic Hamburgs at Wilson’s Findlay tradition since 1936 by Sarah Mayle

419-422-5051 Hours: Monday to Thursday 7am-10pm, Friday and Saturday 7am-11pm, Sunday 12 -7pm. Breakfast served 7-10:30am. Monday to Saturday. Delivery service available for a charge. Find Wilson’s on Facebook under “Wilson’s Sandwich Shop.” Any place that breaks its menu into the categories of Good Eats, Good Vegetarian, Good Breakfast, Good Drinks, and Good Treats is already on my Good Side. Couple that with Wilson’s 79 years of Findlay tradition serving “Mity nice hamburgs and frosted malts,” (as they declare on their hamburg wrappers) and I’m a devoted fan. Wilson’s opened on August 12, 1936. Manager Louise Sanchez said people fondly remember visiting as a kid, then end up bringing their own kids and grandkids back for the Good Eats and the memories. Wilson’s is best known, Sanchez said, for their hamburgs and frosted malts. The wrappers speak the truth. Located right in the heart of downtown Findlay, a seat at Wilson’s is a great way to watch the world go by. There are tables and booths, with windows lining three of the four walls. Along those windows, you can find bar-style seating all the way around the eating area - with fun, twisty stools.

Easier Ordering

I have heard people say, “Oooo...you really have to know how to order when you go to Wilson’s.” So I found out why. There used to be a line of employee stations customers would move through as you ordered - grill, set-up, in-between, and cashier. While novel, if you didn’t know what you were doing, you could really slow things down, to the disdain of some. Sanchez said the ordering process changed this year and customers now simply step up to the cashier, order and wait for their food. “Some of the older customers say they miss the old way, but I think it’s gone

well,” Sanchez said. In the 10-plus years I’ve lived in Findlay, somehow I had only been to Wilson’s a handful of times. When our family paid a visit, it was our kids’ first time eating the food and my first time eating inside. My husband, however, had experience, both inside and through the drive thru, on his own. Perusing the menu, I admit I took great delight when I realized the kids would have no choice but to abandon their comfort zone of chicken strips and fries. Wilson’s does not have a kids menu, but pretty much everything they have could be considered kid-friendly with choices like hamburgs, french fries, hot dogs, or a cheese sandwich. My 6-year-old daughter couldn’t choose between the cheese sandwich and a hot dog, so we got her both to try. My 10-year-old son ordered a hot dog and salad, and the kids shared an order of fries. My daughter enjoyed both of her main dishes, though I noticed she ate more of the all-beef Ballpark hot dog. My son devoured all of his food, announcing he had just eaten the best salad, best hotdog and best fries around. The fries were gone fastest of all. I ordered fries and a cheeseburg “special,” which means add lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. The best way I can describe the cheeseburg is, “classic.” It was a thin patty with the lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on a fresh, soft bun. With the emphasis on “more” and “bigger” in restaurant dining, I found the thin patty to really make the sandwich, as it was a nice proportion to really enjoy the meat along with the bun, fresh lettuce, tomato and mayo. The fries were wonderful, some of my favorites ever. I would put them in the steak fry category, but as steak fries go they aren’t overly thick - they were just

right. Lots of potato to enjoy, yet not greasy and perfectly salted. They were lovely. My husband ordered a double chesseburg “special,” with fries and also found it enjoyable. For him, Wilson’s takes him back to a little slice of his own past. It reminds him of some of his favorite food as a kid in his own hometown, at a locally-owned restaurant that is, sadly, now closed.

Mouth-Watering Malts

We, of course, had to try some of Wilson’s Good Treats, so my husband ordered a slice of apple pie, I tried the blueberry pie and the kids each had a malt. The pie is baked at Wilson’s and was pretty good. The kids raved over their malts, which are made with mixed chocolate and vanilla ice cream. My daughter said she’d like to have one every week and my son called his, “Amazing.” Wilson’s does offer vegetarian fare, such as salad, a black bean burger, or a veggie sandwich. Other menu options include chili, a chili dog, onion rings, or a BLT. New this year, the eatery began serving breakfast, offering an egg sandwich on a bun or biscuit, biscuits and gravy, hash browns or the “old fashion”, which includes scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns and bacon or sausage for $5.35. Doughnuts and sweet rolls are also available.

Bathroom Clean and adequate. For men’s restroom, enter a door outside. High chairs Yes Got Milk? Yes

Kid’s menu? No, but hamburgs, cheese sandwiches, fries, hot dogs and more available.

Food allergies Will try to accommodate. Vegetable oil used, not peanut oil.

As we gazed around the restaurant, we noticed things like a round metal coat rack, framed photos of Wilson’s many years ago, a sign with prices from 1936 (A hamburg was only 10 cents and a coffee 5 cents!), and that the windows are always painted on the outside. Sanchez said Wilson’s allows non-profit organizations to display their events in the windows for a week, free of charge. I think that’s a pretty nice way to support the community. As we wrapped up and were ready to head out, an employee gave us two paper Wilson’s hats for the kids, like the workers wear. They had all kinds of fun modeling them in the car and wanted me to take pictures. I really enjoyed Wilson’s. It’s affordable like fast food, but so much better, sitting there soaking up the tradition. I look forward to making it a tradition of our own.
