The Survival Guide

Wroclaw is a capital of Lower Silesia. Our city is one of the prettiest and the liveliest in Poland. Because of many cultures that co-exist and mix here it is an interesting place to visit. It offers a vast variety of restaurants and bars, designer shops, theatre and musical events, as well as some of the most important universities in Poland. The Odra River and dozens of little canals that meander through its tree-lined streets with their tall, multi - coloured buildings set the scene. In fact Wroclaw is made up of no less than 12 islands, joined by over 100 bridges, and simply begs to be explored. There is over 632 000 inhabitants, the most important of them are students (140 000). Wroclaw is also the place often chosen by world-renowned companies such as Volvo, Whirlpool, Faurecia, Hamilton, Deloitte, 3M, Sitech and Wielton . It’s ideal place for develop this part of industry.

After Venice, Amsterdam and Petersburg, Wroclaw has the largest number of bridges in Europe.

We were the host of EURO 2012!

Fun facts! We have a lot of dwars around the city. Now it’s over 250 dwarfs but that number is still growing. Thanks Jimi Festival gathers each year lots of Jimi Hendrix’ enthusiasts. They all meet up at the city square and play his songs on guitars at the same time to beat successfully the Guinness’ record. In 2012 there were 7273 guitar players!

How to get here? By plane There are regular international flights to the Wroclaw international airport Copernicus Airport Wroclaw www. airport.wroclaw.pl, # +48 71 358 13 81 Wroclaw Airport is situated around 10 km from the city centre, in the south – western part of Wroclaw. Compared to other countries, the transport from the airport to the city center is quite cheap (a bus ticket costs less than 1 EUR). Airlines, which have flights to Wroclaw: LOT, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Eurolot, Scandinavian Airlaines. You can also catch cheap flights from your country to Poznan, Warsaw, Katowice, Krakow or Lodz. Then the best way is to take the train to *Wroclaw Glówny*. When you get to the aiport you should take the bus number 406 and go to the last stop called Dworcowa. It should take about 30 minutes. Then someone

will pick you up. Cost of one way ticket for adults is 3 zloty. We also offer you our help in searching flights! We have an access to special programme which found the cheapest flights from any location. By train Wroclaw is a major hub in the Polish rail network, with several trains a day to all large Polish cities. There are about 10 daily departures to Warsaw (travel time varies from 5 up to 7 hours-depending on a class of the train) as well as quite a lot of trains to Poznan or Krakow. Wroclaw has also a direct railway connection with Dresden. To find connections visit page: http://rozklad-pkp.pl/bin/ query.exe/en. Type there where you are going from (for. ex. Warszawa,

Krakow, Katowice, Poznan) and as the destination set *Wroclaw Główny*. If you made a mistake, the system should correct you. Then you will have a list of different trains. The cheapest types of trains are TLK and IR(or Regio but these are going not so far so you’ll have take second train afterwards). IR have only 2nd class but TLK have 1st and 2nd class. When you’re byuing ticket for TLK or EIC you will have your sits already booked but when you’re going by IR or Regio then you’re sitting wherever you want. You can also buy the ticket via Internet on this site: http://intercity.pl/en/site/search. html. When you will be buying ticket in the ticket office you should be carefull because unfortunately most of people in the ticket office don’t speak English - just say correctly type of train and where you want to go (Wroclaw :) ). Some useful words: From — Z or Od To — Do Train — Pociag Ticket — Bilet Today — Dzisiaj [Gsiaj] Platform — Peron Departures — Odjazdy Arrivals — Przyjazdy Discounts – Unfortunately you don’t

The Survival Guide

have any discounts in train. Only when you’re going in a group (at least 3 people) you will have cheaper ticket in Regio. Many train stations in Poland are being renovated. Watch carefully the yellow boards which show you the way to streets. Especially, you should watch out in Poznan and Katowice. By bus You can come to Wroclaw by Eurolines from London, Berlin, Vilnius, Vienna, Brussels, Minsk, Madrid, Venice, Copenhagen, Strasbourg, Paris, Athens, Kiev, Brno and more. We don’t recommend this solution, because it’s quite expensive. But if you want to come by bus from Warsaw then the best option is going by PolskiBus. It’s cheaper than the train and more comfortable. More information about that you can find here: http://www.polskibus.com/en. If you’re going from Krakow then the best option is going also by Lajkonik bus (ufortunetly they have website only in Polish but you will find them on bus station). It’s much cheaper and quicker than train. By car If you plan to come by car, just let us know about that and we gonna help you or just check it here : http://goo.gl/maps/3fKoW

Weather The climate is mostly temperate throughout the country. It is oceanic in the north and west and becomes gradually warmer and continental towards the south and east. Autums are generally warm, with average temperature between 15 °C and 25 °C. We hope that this september the weather will be just perfect but we will let you know before the meeting how the weather in Poland is. Meals In Poland there are three main meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The most popular breakfasts are sandwiches, cereal with milk and fruits. Lunch is usually eaten from 14.00 to 16.00. Dinner is usually eaten around 19:00. The most famous polish dishes are pierogi (dumplings with different stuffing), bigos (cooked sauerkraut with meat), golabki (meat and rice stuffing wrapped in cabbage). About drinks... you will see, be prepared! Exchanging money In our city there are many places called KANTOR where you can exchange your money. You can do it even in the airport, but we wouldn’t recommend exchanging a big amount of money there, because rates are much better in the city. So if you don’t need money immediately after leaving your plane, we suggest looking for KANTOR or BANK some - place else, closer to the city center but remember! You can’t buy anything in EURO - you have to have zloty! Shopping Shopping centers are open from 9.00 to 21.00, small shops have different opening hours. If you need something at night there are some 24hours shops
