A D.I.Y. AFFAIR An event planner for the budget savvy client
24 ADARA MAGAZINE
S
haun has had a passion for events since she was a young girl. She would play with her dolls and throw Barbie and Ken lavish parties. Soon she began to help her nmother plan her wedding to her dad. In college, she was the it girl for a good dorm party ! For years, Shauns friends and family come to her to plan events. In 2011 Shaun decided to turn her passion into a reality and A D.I.Y. Affair Weddings and Events was born.
Q
What do you love the most about events/ weddings?
The Ambiance. I love how all the elements of a perfectly designed event comes together, the entertainment, the food, the invitations, the decor. All these things coming together like a perfectly simmered stew is just priceless and it gives me a rush each time I plan an event.
Q
What is one of your favorite accomplishments?
My favorite accomplishment to this point would have to be signing the lease on my studio space for A. D.I.Y. Affair Weddings and Events. I am happy to be able to have a dedicated space to be able to meet with my clients and plan fabulous events. I am still in the process of moving into the space and will have a launch party once everything is settled into place. It is just one step in building a brand who focus is exceeding the clients needs.
Q
Tell the readers a few pieces of advice for working with event planners to plan their event. I always tell people to ask your planner about their availability. In some event planning packages the client only receives a set number of face to face meetings and a set number of phone calls. If you are a client that wants to be involved in your planning this may not be enough. I offer free unlimited phone and email communication in all my packages so that my clients can always get in contact with me should they have concerns. Planners are there to bring your vision to life. Any design and planning ideas should be totally in alignment with who the client is. A planner should be open to your ideas and suggestions while also being able to offer you advice on etiquette and current trends in event planning.
Another important thing is to check if your event planner is licensed and insured. This helps the client to feel confident that they are working with a legitimate company that has pride in their business and to the profession. In the event that something were to happen a safety measure is there that protects the owner of the business and the client.
Q
What is one trend that you are seeing lately in events?
Events today are all about engaging guests with lots of interaction. It may be having a photobooth at a high school graduation party with tons of fun props. It could be a self service candy buffet with all kinds of candies from chocolates to gummies. at a sweet 16. Weddings are bringing in live entertainment from belly dancers to bongo drum players the opportunities are limitless.Events today are also definitely about reflecting the honoree. When you walk into an event for your best friend’s sweet 16 party everyone will say omg this is totally her style. It is all about bringing out the clients interest and putting those interest on showcase for all to see.
Q
Why do you think it’s important to get help planning any event?
When you think about the most important moments families celebrate in life such as birthdays, graduations, sweet 16 parties, bar mitzvahs, quinceaneras, weddings, anniversaries, births or any everything worth celebrating, for the people involved, the focus should be on the event and sharing in laughs and making memories. The minutes and hours leading up to these special moments shouldn’t be spent setting up tables and making countless phone calls to make sure everything is in place. Hiring a planner gives you someone with experience orchestrating all kinds of events from small and intimate to large and bustling. They have all the resources when something goes wrong, and it always does. The only difference is with a planner you will never know until it has long be solved. Bottom line it makes for a stress free day!
Q
What do you feel is the biggest factor in people choosing an event planner?
The biggest factor in choosing an event planner is going to be compatibility/comfortability. In my own personal opinion in order to be able work alongside someone

the client is basically entrusting a planner with the most special occasion in their lives. Trust and confidence is only going to happen between two people that share similar philosophies and vision. That is the entire purpose of having a client consultation so both parties can get to know one another. During an wedding or event consultation this is a time for the client to ask questions and learn if in fact this person can not only deliver a service but if this is a person they can see themselves working with for a month or more. So never feel obligated to book services at a consultation. Go home and talk it over with friends and family before making a decision.
Q
Why do you feel that you are the best and why people should choose you for their event?
It is simple.I am the best at what I do because my clients are everyday hard working people and I specialize in being able to create beautiful events on a limited budget. My expertise in negotiation and resourcefulness allows me to give clients maximum value for their hard earned money. My clients choose me because they know I understand their families financial needs as well as their need and desire for a beautiful event. When my clients choose me they are not hiring just another vendor. They are hiring a wedding professional who cares about their needs and delivers nothing less than the best.
