Huskers’ Osborne is ready to retire ■ Nebraska legend will step aside as AD in January. BY BLAIR KERKHOFF Kansas City Star

Tom Osborne is one of those rarities in college sports where a school’s identity is strongly tied to a singular figure. When you think of Alabama, Bear Bryant comes to mind. Florida State? Bobby Bowden. In today’s game, it’s Kansas State and Bill Snyder, Virginia Tech and Frank Beamer. But Osborne’s association with Nebraska runs deeper than any. He not only served as an assistant and head football coach but also athletic director for his university. And congressman for his state. The association won’t end, but his employment at the university will, officially on Jan. 1, 2013, with Osborne’s announcement in Lincoln, Neb., on Wednesday that he’s stepping down after five years as athletic boss. Osborne said he’ll remain on campus for an additional six months to help with the transition. “At some point, whether you’re able to function or not, the perception that you’re getting old gets in the way,” said Osborne, 75.

NFL, referees reach tentative deal Regular officials could work tonight’s game in Baltimore. ■

BY BARRY WILNER Associated Press

NEW YORK — The NFL and the referees’ union have reached a tentative contract agreement, ending an impasse that began in June when the league locked out the officials and used replacements instead. The NFL said it planned to have regular refs work Thursday night’s Cleveland-Baltimore game.

With Commissioner Roger Goodell at the table, the sides concluded two days of talks at midnight Thursday with the announcement of a tentative 8-year deal, which must be ratified by the union’s 121 members. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tweeted “Pleased to report that an agreement has been reached with the NFL Referees Association. Details to follow.” The replacements worked the first three weeks of games, triggering a wave of frustration that threatened to disrupt the rest of the season. After a missed call cost the

Green Bay Packers a win on a chaotic final play at Seattle on Monday night, the two sides really got serious. It was not certain who would work this week’s games, but ESPN reported regular refs will work Thursday night with Baltimore hosting Cleveland. The union was seeking improved salaries, retirement benefits and other logistical issues for the part-time officials. The NFL has proposed a pension freeze and a higher 401(k) match, and it wants to hire 21 more officials to

Chiefs’ center out for year BY ADAM TEICHER Kansas City Star

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs received more injury information Wednesday and, as they have come to expect, it was news they wish they didn’t have to hear. This time, it was a broken leg for starting center Rodney Hudson, who is finished for the season. Hudson will become the fifth Chiefs regular to miss at least one game on Hudson Sunday when the Chiefs play against the Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. He could be joined by running back Peyton Hillis and wide receiver Dexter McCluster, who were also injured in last week’s win over New Orleans. Cabrera tries to capture baseball’s Triple Crown here have been only three Triple Crown winners in the major leagues in my lifetime. And let me tell you, that’s a lot of lifetime. But we could be on the cusp of a fourth as the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera chases the elusive TC and, as a bonus, tries to help his team reach the American League playoffs. For those who don’t know, the Triple Crown categories are batting average, home runs and runs batted in. The 29-year-old Cabrera, who

also happens to be locked in what is perceived to be a tight race for AL Most Valuable Player with Angels rookie center fielder Mike Trout, leads in two of those categories and is just behind Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton in the home run race. Cabrera, a third baseman who defensively is, um, a really good hitter, led Trout by .005 in the hitting race before Wednesday’s games and had a comfortable lead over Hamilton (133 to 124) for the RBI lead in the American League.

Dirks, Tigers take out Royals BY BOB DUTTON Kansas City Star

Detroit’s Andy Dirks breaks up a double play with his slide into Royals second baseman Irving Falu, allowing the Tigers to score the go-ahead run Wednesday in Detroit.

DETROIT — So far, the Royals aren’t providing the same late-season torment to the Detroit Tigers that they inflicted on the ROYALS 4 Chicago TIGERS 5 White Sox. Detroit made it three in a row Wednesday night by rallying for a 5-4 victory at Comerica Park with winning run scoring because of a takeout slide by Andy Dirks on second baseman Irving Falu in the

eighth inning. The victory, couple with the Indians’ win over the White Sox, put Detroit alone in first place in the AL Central. On this, the Royals were unanimous: Dirks, a former Wichita State standout, made a terrific, game-winning play. “You’ve got to credit Dirks for busting his tail to get down there and break that thing up,” manager Ned Yost said. “Absolutely the right play (to try for a double play). It was hit hard enough, but Dirks made the play. He made it happen.

“He got a great jump on the ball, went in aggressively and went in cleanly.” The Tigers had runners at first and third with one out against Kelvin Herrera when Jhonny Peralta pulled a grounder to third. Mike Moustakas opted for the double play – and, remember, Moose leads all third basemen with 41 double plays. “That’s a double-play ball,” Moustakas insisted. “It’s a ground ball, and Peralta got out of the box pretty slow. Pac-12, Big 12 could face best of the rest BY RALPH D. RUSSO Associated Press

NEW YORK — A tentative plan for the new college football postseason calls for a Pac-12 or Big 12 team to face the best team from a group of five conferences, including the Big East. A person with direct knowledge of the plan for the four-team playoff in 2014 told The Associated Press that either a Pac-12 or a Big 12 team likely will be the opponent for the toprated champion from the Big East, Mountain West, Conference USA, Sun Belt and Mid-American Conference. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the conferences did not want to make the plan public. The proposal has the Pac-12 sending either its

champion or a replacement team to the game in years when the Rose Bowl hosts a national semifinal. In years the Rose Bowl is a traditional Big Ten-Pac-12 matchup, the Big 12 would send one of its top teams to the game. The deal with the Big 12 and Pac-12 would be similar to the one the Orange Bowl is working on with the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference. That deal, which has not been completed, would match a team from either of those conferences or Notre Dame against the Atlantic Coast Conference champ or a another ACC team. The original playoff plan had the national semifinals rotating among six bowl sites, giving the new system two playoff games and four other high-revenue bowl games each season.

Only a few strokes separated Kapaun Mount Carmel (333), Maize (336) and Bishop Carroll (337). Another milestone was reached by East’s Alexis Simmons, who had yet to break 100. She turned in a careerbest 91 to collect her first medal in a major tournament with a 20th-place finish. “Our coach makes us practice putting all the time and it feels so obsessive and unnecessary at times,” Simmons said. “But today it was so nice to have a 10-foot putt and

Offense paves way for McPherson BY PAIGE FEIKERT Eagle correspondent

McPherson’s boys soccer team has scoring threats throughout its roster, a trait that led the Bullpups to a 9-1 start to the season. After defeating Rose Hill 3-0 Tuesday night, McPherson stands as the only team without a league loss in AV-CTL Division III. “We’ve got a lot of great individual talent but we are really playing as a team,” McPherson coach Chris Adrian said. “When people play against us it’s not one person that they’ll have to shut down, we’ve had a lot of opportunities from the majority of starters.” McPherson’s strength begins in the back, with goalkeeper Dylan Stos and center defenders Adam Bowers and Peter Horton, whom Adrian said are capable of starting the team’s attack but tend to focus on allowing as few goals as possible. “Our defense is exceptionally strong,” Adrian said. “Their goal is focused on getting that shutout every single game,

PREP SPOTLIGHT BOYS SOCCER and you could see that against Rose Hill, they were almost more happy about that than getting the win.” Nick Torres leads the team in scoring with 19 goals, followed by Xzavier Torres, who comes off the bench for the Bullpups. The midfield has supported McPherson as well, led by Ryan Horton, Dylan Blosser and Dylan Babcock, with depth from Cole Krizek. Adrian said the Bullpups are heading into a tough stretch in the schedule, facing opponents such as Rose Hill, Junction City, and Buhler. “The guys have some pretty high goals this season, every game they’re looking to get better,” Adrian said. “It’s nice to beat a team 8-0, 10-0 but we’ve got to play good when the other teams come around. Our guys play better against those teams, the better the other team plays, the better our team plays.”

Northwest struggles — Northwest coach Bobby Bribiesca knew this year’s team would be vastly different from last year’s undefeated state championship team. And still, the team started 5-0. “We’re not as good as last year, but we have a big heart, good character and I tell the team ‘sometimes the will to win is better than the skill to win,’ and that’s what brought us through the first five games,” Bribiesca said. Since that fast start, Northwest has lost to Kapaun, Carroll and Northwest. The game against Carroll was Northwest’s first loss at home in four years. Bribiesca said every game is difficult for Northwest this season, because teams are motivated to beat the state champion. “We go into every game thinking our opponent is a very good team, because a lot of times when you beat Northwest that means your season,” Bribiesca said. “Every team that plays us, even if they’re 0-16, it’s not an easy game.” The Grizzlies have depended on senior defender Jake

Carter for leadership. The defense, with goalkeeper Hayden Johnson, has held opponents to six goals this season. Andres Lleras leads Northwest’s offense along with seniors Caleb Mills, Nick Cramer and the rest of the midfield. High competition — According to East coach Dylan Gruntzel, the increasing popularity of soccer has contributed to the parity in the Wichita area. “Wichita soccer is kind of starting to grow. Five or 10 years ago it wasn’t the most popular thing to do, kids would rather play football,” Gruntzel said. “The talent is growing and it’s spreading out through the city and the surrounding area, so every game you show up to you have to be ready.” Kapaun began the week in first place in the City League. However, East stopped Kapaun Tuesday with a 2-1 victory. Derby entered the coaches’ state rankings this week at No. 7, but fell to Northwest 4-1 on Monday.

It’s been incremental improvements from the Winfield boys cross country team that have led to the success this season. Last weekend the Vikings finished a modest 21st in the Gold division at the Rim Rock Invitational, but had three runners in the top 60 of one of the most competitive races in the Midwest. Self-made runner — When Lydia Montano arrived at Cheney her freshman season, coach Rich Simmons was honest in his assessment. “She was probably a borderline JV-varsity runner when she first got to us,” Simmons said. That changed as Montano put in the hours of running and actually improved as she progressed through high school, a rarity for girls. Last week Montano, now a senior, finished fourth at the Oxford Invitational, and should contend for a state berth in Class 4A in her last season. “You don’t see it very often where girls get considerably faster with each season,” Simmons said. “Lydia has put in the work and it’s so neat to see how much she’s improved over four seasons with us. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Softball seeks more accurate gauge this fall BY PAUL SUELLENTROP The Wichita Eagle

Wichita State’s softball team went 8-0 in scrimmages last fall and coach Kristi Bredbenner isn’t sure she wants a repeat. “I think it gave our team a false hope that we were a lot better than we really were,” she said. “When you don’t have any losses in the fall season, you tend to get that.” Bredbenner will try to get a more realistic measure of WSU’s ability this fall. She added Oklahoma State and Tulsa to the schedule after not playing an NCAA Division I school a year ago. The

WSU NOTES

Shockers open their fall season Saturday against Pittsburg State (2 p.m.) and Johnson County Community College (6 p.m.) at Wilkins Stadium. WSU closes the fall with a trip to Stillwater to play Tulsa and OSU on Oct. 13. Next fall, Bredbenner might add more Division I opponents to the eight games allowed by the NCAA. “I really think the more competitive we can be in the fall, the more realistic it is,” she said. “The big thing for us is, can we can get better every weekend? Can we figure out what that mentality is by the time we get to Stillwater and prove we’re a changed program and a program heading in the right direction?”

WSU returns five of its top seven hitters from a team that went 15-40 last spring. Bredbenner will experiment this fall with lineups and positions, giving her eight newcomers and her returners chances to play different spots. Much of her attention will be on the pitchers. The Shockers ranked last in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 5.37 ERA . Senior Katie Armagost and junior lefty Sloan Anderson are back and freshman Hunter Stohlmeyer is undergoing changes to her motion. “This is the year we’re looking for both (Anderson and Armagost) to step up,” Bredbenner said. Bredbenner said practices are moving more quickly this

fall, her second as coach at WSU. Expectations are clear. “Last year, it took us awhile for it to really click that we need to put in extra hours,” sophomore catcher Melanie Jaegers said. “Everybody gets better at practice. If you want to earn a spot or get even bettter, you have to come in on our own time and do it.”

Stay on course — By not going too fast, WSU runner Kaitlyn McLeod is moving at a pretty good pace. McLeod, a sophomore from Peculiar, Mo., wasn’t much of a factor as a freshman, running in five meets and placing 58th in the MVC Championships. That was OK with her. She needed

that year to adjust to college running. As a sophomore, McLeod is making a difference. She finished fourth in the JK Gold Classic (14 minutes, 18.79 seconds in the 4-kilometer) and third in the Richard Clark Invitational (18:37 in the 5K). Both finishes ranked second among Shocker runnners. “I saw an opening when we were losing two of our top five runners,” McLeod said. “We need somebody to really step up.” McLeod went to work over the summer, upping her weekly mileage to around 70, 20 more than her fall routine as a freshman. “I decided I wanted to be a consistent top-five scorer

paring the Chiefs for their game against San Diego. “In this job there are going to be three things you don’t expect to happen every day,’’ Crennel said. “Not just every week but every day. You have to deal with it. Having had the experience before, you understand things are going to happen that really are out of your control.’’ The Chiefs signed two offensive linemen, Bryan Mattison and Russ Hochstein. Mattison can play both guard and center. He played in 15 games over the past two seasons with the Rams and Ravens. He started four games for St. Louis last year. Hochstein has played 11 years at guard, mostly as a backup, with Tampa Bay, New England and Denver. He was a backup in 15 games for Denver last season and hasn’t started a game since 2010. For the time being, at least, both players are backups. The Chiefs instead will go with an offensive line that includes Ryan Lilja at center and rookie Jeff Allen at left guard. The Chiefs were encouraged by that arrangement in the win over the Saints. “Ryan Lilja was to me a hero of the game,’’ quarterback Matt Cassel said. “He’s a guy that has never (played center) in a real game. But for him to step in like he did and for us not to miss a beat and for us to not have a bad snap during the game, that was huge. “I’m not going to lie. I was pretty scared. You take so many snaps and you get a comfort level with somebody. Once you get into a game, you never know how it’s

improve the quality of officiating. The union has fought that, fearing it could lead to a loss of jobs for some of the current officials, as well as a reduction in overall compensation. The NFL claimed its offers have included annual pay increases that could earn an experienced official more than $200,000 annually by 2018. The NFLRA has disputed the value of the proposal, insisting it means an overall reduction in compensation. Replacement refs aren’t new to the NFL. They worked the first week of games in 2001 before a deal was reached. But those officials came from the highest level of college football; the current replacements do not. Their ability to call fast-moving NFL games drew mounting criticism through Week 3, climaxing last weekend, when ESPN analyst Jon Gruden called their work “tragic and comical.” Those comments came during “Monday Night Football,” with Seattle beating Green Bay 14-12 on a desperation pass into the end zone on the final play. Packers safety M.D. Jennings had both hands on the ball in the end zone, and when he fell to the ground in a scrum, both Jennings and Seahawks receiver Golden Tate had their arms on the ball. The closest official to the play, at the back of the end zone, signaled for the clock to stop, while another official at the sideline ran in and then signaled touchdown. The NFL said in a statement Tuesday that the touchdown pass should not have been overturned – but acknowledged Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch. The league also said there was no indisputable evidence to reverse the call made on the field. That drew even louder howls of outrage. Some coaches, including Miami’s Joe Philbin and Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis, tried to restore some calm by instructing players not to speak publicly on the issue. Fines against two coaches

But Ryan did a great job.’’ Lilja said his preference was to remain at guard, the position he played when he joined the Chiefs in 2004 as a rookie free agent from Kansas State. But he was their best option once Hudson left their lineup. “I was comfortable at my position,’’ he said. “But on the offensive line you have to be able to play more than one position. It’s too bad about Rodney but it happens all the time so you’ve got to be ready. “It’s a change for me. When you play a position for a long time, there are things you don’t have to think about anymore. There are things that are second nature. I’ve got to think about those things now. So I’m running through things in my head a little bit more than I would at

guard.’’ The Chiefs had the option of apply the new injuredreserve list rule to Hudson. Each team can place one injured player on the reserve list and bring him back to the active roster later in the season. They declined that option with Hudson, so he can’t play the rest of the season. “It does not require surgery,’’ Crennel said. “He’s got to be off of it for several weeks and then has several weeks on crutches. It’s going to be most of the season and that’s why he’s not going to be able to come back. “By the time he gets back, the season is going to be over. I don’t know that we want to use that on him.’’ Hudson was the Chiefs’ second-round draft pick last year and was in his first season as the starter.

Hillis (ankle) and wide receiver Dexter McCluster (elbow) were also injured against the Saints. Hillis’ ankle remained in a boot Wednesday and he did not practice. McCluster, who injured his elbow trying to break his fall after catching a pass, was able to practice on a limited basis. He was able to run routes and catch passes during individual drills but didn’t practice during the team portion because the Chiefs wanted him to avoid contact. “I think the guy shows a lot of toughness by wanting to be out there and wanting to try to help his team win,’’ Crennel said. “He wants to play on Sunday if he can. That’s a good sign. What happens is you get guys who do that, who show that desire, and then it affects other guys.’’

sas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Missouri. When the Big Ten offered a more stable environment, Osborne and Perlman led the transition. Osborne endured his share of controversies, most notably the trouble with running back Lawrence Phillips, who had assaulted his girlfriend. Osborne gave Phillips a second chance, believing he was better off in a team environment. But Phillips’ troubles continued. There was the famous Orange Bowl loss to Miami in 1984, when Osborne passed up an extra-point attempt that would have given the Cornhuskers the national championship for a two-point conversion try that failed and cost Nebraska the title. Osborne was frustrated enough as a coach in his early years that he interviewed at Colorado, turning down that offer in 1978. As a head coach, he went out on top, winning the championships three of his

final four years before turning over the program to assistant Solich after the 1997 title. Osborne went into politics in 2000 and was a landslide winner in three congressional elections but was a surprise loser to Dave Heineman in the Republican primary in his run for governor in 2006. The state government’s loss was the university’s gain. Osborne returned to campus as a faculty member and athletic consultant before becoming athletic director the next year, replacing Steve Pederson. At the time, the proud football program was in a tailspin. Now, it will be the task of the next athletic boss to guide the program toward the standard set by the old one.

A’s keep pressure on Texas in West BY STEPHEN HAWKINS Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas — Yoenis Cespedes had one of Oakland’s two triples in the first inning and the Athletics jumped out to a quick lead in a 9-3 victory at Texas ATHLETICS 9 on RANGERS

3

Wednesday night to pull within three games of the AL West-leading Rangers. The Athletics, who had played five consecutive one-run games, led 5-0 only eight batters into the game. They chased Martin Perez (1-3) before the rookie left-hander got all the way through the batting order. Oakland has won two of three in the series that wraps up with a day game Thursday. After that, the A’s go home for a three-game weekend series against Seattle before hosting the Rangers for the final three games of the regular season next week. Stephen Drew had four of Oakland’s 16 hits, including a double leading off the game before scoring on Cespedes’ triple into the right-center gap. The only Oakland starter without a hit was No. 9 hitter Cliff Pennington. Even Josh Reddick ended a career-long 0-for-30 slump with singles in the seventh and ninth innings. Rookie righty Jarrod Parker (12-8) won his third consecutive deci-

sion over four starts. He struck out eight in six innings, and his 109 pitches were his most since 111 on June 4, when he threw eight scoreless innings and allowed only one hit against the Rangers in Oakland. Oakland had a 2 1⁄2 -game lead over the Angels for the AL’s second wild card. Los Angeles was playing at home later Wednesday night against Seattle. The magic number remained at five for the two-time defending American League champion Rangers, who host the Angels for three games this weekend. Matt Harrison (17-10), the All-Star left-hander, starts for Texas in the series finale, when he will try to become the Rangers’ first 18-game winner since Kenny Rogers in 2004. He faces lefty Travis Blackley (5-3). The Athletics set an AL record for striking out the most in a season with their 11 against six Texas pitchers. They have 1,333, nine more than Tampa Bay had in 2007, and they still have seven games left. After Cespedes’ oneout triple, the A’s had three consecutive singles. The last was Josh Donaldson’s grounder up the middle that then rolled under the glove of center fielder Josh Hamilton for a twobase error, making it 4-0. Derek Norris tripled to left-center on a liner Hamilton appeared to misplay and let get over his head.

Yost said, “but we’ve played three games, and we’re 0-3.” The two teams break for the weekend – the Royals go to Cleveland – but meet again next week in a season-ending, three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals went 12-6 this season against the White Sox but are just 4-10 so far against the Tigers. This was a nice comeback by the Tigers, who had lost their previous 11 one-run games. The Royals staked Jeremy Guthrie to a 4-1 lead by scoring three times in the third before getting a homer from Jeff Francoeur in the fourth. Guthrie couldn’t hold it. He served up homers on changeups to Alex Avila and Austin Jackson in a three-run fourth that pulled Detroit even. Guthrie

allowed nothing further before exiting with a no-decision after seven innings. Herrera started the eighth by retiring Prince Fielder on a drive to center, but Delmon Young reached on an infield single that, initially, first baseman Eric Hosmer deflected. Falu pounced on the carom and made a quick throw, but Herrera couldn’t hold it. It proved costly. Don Kelly replaced Young as a pinch-runner and stole second. Falu positioned himself behind the base, instead of straddling it, when allowed the throw by catcher Salvy Perez to sail a bit high and result in a late tag. “If (Falu) is straddling the bag or up on the bag a little bit more,” Yost admitted, “I think he would have been out.”

McIlroy the ‘marked man’ of this Ryder Cup

Woods played for so many years in these matches when he dominated golf. There was a feeling among Europeans that beating Woods was worth more than one point because of the emotional lift it gave the rest of the team.

McIlroy doesn’t see it that way. “This week I’m not the No. 1 player in the world,” he said Wednesday. “I’m one person in a 12-man team, and that’s it. It’s a team effort. There’s 12 guys all striving toward the same goal.

I’m just part of that.” But even in this team competition, it’s easy to get wrapped in a single star, as it was for Woods. There’s only one way to keep score in the Ryder Cup, though it’s tempting to make individuals accountable. Even when Woods was at his best, he still could only deliver a maximum of five points if he played every match. He never came close, and didn’t even produce a winning record until his fifth Ryder Cup. “I don’t have a number. I don’t have a total,” McIlroy said. “I think with the U.S. playing here at home, I think they are the favorites. It’s a very strong team. So we know we have got to go out there and play very, very well to have a chance. So if I play on Friday morning, I just want to get my point and then take it from there.” Wednesday brought the Ryder Cup one day closer to the start of matches that are growing in

The last Triple Crown winner was Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski, who in 1967 batted .326 with 44 homers and 121 RBIs. Actually, Minnesota’s Harmon Killebrew tied Yaz with 44 homers, but I guess ties are good enough when you’re awarding Triple Crowns. Here and there, a few players have been in the hunt for the Triple Crown since. But Cabrera is making the most serious run at the feat in nearly a half century. Yet it’s not like Cabrera’s chase is front and center with the national sports media, which has for the most part rid itself from baseball banter because there’s so much NFL to talk about. There have been only 16 Triple Crown winners in baseball history, dating back to the first winner in 1878. During

that season, which consisted of 60 games, Providence Grays outfielder Paul Hines batted .358 with four homers and 50 RBIs to lead the National League in each category. His four home runs were one more than Cincinnati outfielder Charley Jones and he was one of only four players to hit more than one home run that season. What I’m trying to say here is that home runs were difficult to hit in 1878. In 1894 the Boston Braves’ Hugh Duffy hit .438 with 18 homers and 145 RBIs. In 1901, Philadelphia’s Nap Lajoie won a Triple Crown and batted .426. Detroit’s Ty Cobb was next in 1909, when he batted .377 with nine homers and 107 RBIs. And in 1912, Cubs third baseman Heinie Zimmerman became the fifth player to accomplish

the feat. And as any baseball stat geek will tell you, the RBI wasn’t an official statistic until 1920. Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Cardinals won the Triple Crown in the National League in 1922 and 1925. And he came close a bunch of other times. Hornsby isn’t often mentioned when baseball’s all-time greats are being discussed, but the numbers he put up during the 1920s are incredible. During a 10-year span from 1920-29, Hornsby, who spent seven of those seasons in St. Louis and one each with the New York Giants, Boston Braves and Chicago Cubs, led the National League in average seven times, in home runs twice and in RBIs four times. He was the league leader in runs five times and also a

MEDINAH, Ill. — Rory McIlroy has gone from being a rookie in the Ryder Cup to a marked man at Medinah. McIlroy is the first European in nearly 20 years to go into the Ryder Cup as the No. 1 player in the world, although the star power of this 23-year-old from Northern Ireland is defined by much more than a computer ranking. He already has won two majors, with a record score in the U.S. Open last year at Congressional and a record margin at the PGA Championship last month at Kiawah Island. His four wins this year are the most of anyone in the world, all against the strongest fields. So it was no surprise when Jim Furyk referred to Boy Wonder as the “present day Tiger Woods” and a “marked man” at this Ryder Cup. That’s the role

LUTZ From Page 1D But going into Wednesday night’s game against Kansas City, Cabrera had been homerless in four consecutive games. And when you are in need of home runs as you attempt to do something no player has done in 45 years, no homers in four games qualifies as a drought. Cabrera also had just six hits in his previous 31 at-bats, so perhaps the pressure of the Triple Crown chase, the AL Central crown and the MVP battle with Trout are wearing him down. Trout, too, is struggling, having hit only .268 in September with six extra-base hits.

anticipation. Both teams look strong on paper, with all 24 players among the top 35 in the world. The Americans are loaded with experience behind Woods, Furyk and Phil Mickelson. Europe has only one Ryder Cup rookie, Nicolas Colsaerts, and has the experience when it comes to winning. It has captured the cup six of the last eight times. And while captains Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal have preached civility and respect throughout the week, leave it to Ian Poulter to set the record straight on how the intensity can change when the first tee shot is struck Friday morning. “It’s not that we don’t like each other,” the Englishman said. “We are all good friends, both sides of the pond. But there’s something about Ryder Cup which kind of intrigues me, how you can be great mates with somebody, but boy, do you want to kill them in Ryder Cup.”

Poulter is not alone. Among the four American rookies is Brandt Snedeker, coming off an $11.44 million payday for winning the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup. “I’m very, very competitive,” Snedeker said. “People don’t get that, because I’m polite. But I tee it up on Friday here – tee it up against anybody – I’m going to try to beat their brains in as bad as I can.” McIlroy, for all his ability, is so unfailingly polite and respectful that everyone likes him. Woods calls him “such a great kid.” The gallery adores him. Perhaps for the first time in his career, he might not get a lot of love from the other side of the ropes. “I expect it to be loud. I expect them to cheer for them,” McIlroy said. “Hopefully, I won’t get heckled, but if I do, then you’ve just got to stay calm and be focused on the golf and just get on with it.”

multiple-time leader in hits (four), doubles (four), onbase percentage (eight), slugging percentage (eight), total bases (six) and OPS (nine). Hornsby finished first in homers and RBIs in 1920, but was tied for sixth in home runs. He was first with a .297 batting average in 1921, when he finished second in home runs and RBIs. He was first in average and second in homers in 1924, but only seventh in RBIs. He was second in average and third in homers and RBIs in 1927. He was third in average and RBIs and tied for third in homers in 1929. Hornsby, as far as I’m concerned, is Mr. Triple Crown. The only other player to win two Triple Crowns is Ted Williams, who did so for the Boston Red Sox in 1942 and 1947 and might have won another one or two had it not

been for his military service in World War II. Other winners include: Jimmie Foxx with the Philadelphia Athletics and Chuck Klein of the Phillies, both in 1933; the Yankees’ Lou Gehrig in 1934; Joe Medwick in 1937 with the Cardinals; Mickey Mantle with the New York Yankees in 1956 and Frank Robinson with Baltimore in 1966. Cabrera could join some elite company, but he needs to finish strong, especially in the power department. As the Tigers play their most important games of the season, Cabrera is threatening history. It’s been 45 years since someone won a Triple Crown. It’s about time. Read Bob Lutz’s blog at blogs.kansas.com/lutz. Reach him at blutz@wichitaeagle.com.
